¹ ¶ Now it came to pass in the days when the judges governed that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem of Judah went to sojourn in the fields of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. ² And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem of Judah. And they came into the fields of Moab and continued there. ³ And Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons, ⁴ who took wives for themselves of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years. ⁵ And Mahlon and Chilion both died also; and the woman was left without her two sons and her husband. ⁶ ¶ Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, to return from the fields of Moab, for she had heard in the field of Moab how the LORD had visited his people to give them bread. ⁷ Therefore she went forth out of the place where she had been and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah. ⁸ And Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to thy mother’s house; the LORD deal with you in mercy as ye have dealt with the dead and with me. ⁹ The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice and wept. ¹⁰ And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people. ¹¹ And Naomi replied, Go back, my daughters; why must ye go with me? Do I have more sons in my womb that they may be your husbands? ¹² Turn, my daughters, and go back, for I am too old to have a husband. Even if I should say, I have hope, if I should have a husband tonight and should also bear sons, ¹³ should ye tarry for them until they are grown? Should ye stay without husbands because of them? No, my daughters, for I have greater bitterness than you because the hand of the LORD has come out against me. ¹⁴ And they lifted up their voice and wept again, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth cleaved unto her. ¹⁵ And she said, Behold, thy sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; return thou after thy sister-in-law. ¹⁶ And Ruth said, Do not intreat me to leave thee or to return from following after thee, for wherever thou goest, I will go; and wherever thou shalt lodge, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people and thy God my God. ¹⁷ Where thou diest, I will die, and there will I be buried; let the LORD do so unto me and let him give unto me that only death shall part thee and me. ¹⁸ When she saw that she was courageous to go with her, then she left off speaking to her. ¹⁹ ¶ So the two walked until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, entering into Bethlehem, that all the city was moved because of them, and they said, Is this Naomi? ²⁰ And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. ²¹ I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me? ²² So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the fields of Moab, and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

¹⁰ ¶ And there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was grievous in the land.

¹ ¶ And when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me and be thou perfect.

¹⁷ Then Abraham fell upon his face and laughed and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him who is one hundred years old? and shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear?

¹ ¶ And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did with Sarah as he had spoken.

¹ ¶ And there was a famine in the land, in addition to the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech, king of the Philistines, unto Gerar.

²⁷ And he came near and kissed him, and he smelled the smell of his clothing and blessed him and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD has blessed.

²⁰ And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go and will give me bread to eat and clothing to put on

¹¹ And Jacob kissed Rachel and lifted up his voice and wept.

²⁸ And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? Thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.

⁵⁵ And early in the morning Laban rose up and kissed his sons and his daughters and blessed them; and Laban departed and returned unto his place.

¹⁹ Thus Rachel died and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

¹¹ Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house until Shelah, my son, is grown; for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

¹ ¶ And the famine was sore in the land.

¹⁴ And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may let your other brother go, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my sons, I am bereaved.

¹⁵ Moreover he kissed all his brethren and wept upon them, and after that his brethren talked with him.

¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has fed me all my life long unto this day,

²⁵ And Joseph took an oath of the sons of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from here.

¹⁶ ¶ Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you and seen that which is done to you in Egypt,

³¹ And the people believed; and hearing that the LORD had visited the sons of Israel and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed and worshipped.

³ and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD (YHWH) I was not known to them.

³¹ The flax, therefore, and the barley were smitten, for the barley was headed out, and the flax was in stalk. ³² But the wheat and the rye were not smitten; for they were late.

⁴ Then the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather the word for every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or not. ⁵ And it shall come to pass that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in, which shall be twice as much as they gather daily. ⁶ Then Moses and Aaron said unto all the sons of Israel, At evening ye shall know that the LORD has brought you out from the land of Egypt;

²⁷ And Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went to his own land.

¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your stronghold, and I will make your heaven as iron and your earth as bronze.

¹⁵ For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the camp until they were consumed.

⁵ ¶ When brethren dwell together and one of them dies and has no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry outside unto a stranger; her husband’s brother shall go in unto her and take her to him to wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her.

²³ And thy heavens which are over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. ²⁴ The LORD shall make the rain of thy land dust and ashes; from the heavens it shall come down upon thee, until thou art destroyed.

³⁸ Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field and shalt gather but little in, for the locust shall consume it.

³⁹ ¶ See now that I, I am he, and there are no gods with me; I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal; and there is not one that can deliver out of my hand.

¹⁵ ¶ And if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the river or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

²⁴ If Chemosh thy god should expel anyone for you, would thou not possess it? So whoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

⁸ ¶ After him Ibzan, of Bethlehem, judged Israel,

¹ ¶ In those days when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of Mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehem of Judah. ² And his concubine committed adultery against him and went away from him unto her father’s house to Bethlehem of Judah and was there four whole months.

⁵ And Mahlon and Chilion both died also; and the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

¹⁰ And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.

¹⁴ And they lifted up their voice and wept again, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth cleaved unto her.

¹¹ And Boaz answered and said unto her, It has fully been showed me all that thou hast done unto thy mother-in-law since the death of thy husband and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother and the land of thy nativity and art come three days ago unto a people whom thou didst not know before. ¹² Let the LORD recompense thy work and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to cover thyself.

²⁰ And Naomi said unto her daughter-in-law, Let him be blessed of the LORD, who has not left off his mercy unto the living nor unto the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, and of whom one has the right to redeem us.

²³ So she kept close by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest and dwelt with her mother-in-law.

¹ ¶ Then Naomi, her mother-in-law, said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee that it may be well with thee?

¹ ¶ Now there was a certain man of Ramath of Zophim, of Mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite.

⁷ The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and lifts up. ⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill to set them among princes and to make them inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and he has set the world upon them.

²¹ And the LORD visited Hannah so that she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.

¹⁷ And he said, What is the word that the LORD has spoken unto thee? I pray thee do not hide it from me. God do so to thee and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the word that he spoke unto thee.

¹¹ So they sent and gathered together all the cardinals of the Philistines and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it not kill me and my people, for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city, and the hand of God had become very heavy there.

Seeing I go where I go, return thou and take back thy brethren; mercy and truth are in thee. ²¹ And Ittai answered the king and said, As the LORD lives and as my lord the king lives, for life or for death, wherever my lord the king shall be, there also will thy slave be.

¹³ Likewise say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone and of my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the place of Joab.

¹ ¶ Then there was a famine in the days of David for three consecutive years, and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is because of Saul and because of his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.

⁹ and he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they disjointed them hanging them from a tree in the hill before the LORD; and they fell all seven together and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.

²³ Then King Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, God do so to me and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life.

¹ ¶ Then Elijah, the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. ² And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, ³ Leave this place and turn to the east and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan, ⁴ and thou shalt drink of the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. ⁵ So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan. ⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drank from the brook. ⁷ And it came to pass after a while that the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. ⁸ ¶ And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, ⁹ Arise, go to Zarephath of Zidon, and thou shalt dwell there; behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. ¹⁰ So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks; and he called to her and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. ¹¹ And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her again and said, Bring me also, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand. ¹² And she said, As the LORD thy God lives, I have no baked bread, but only a handful of meal in a pitcher and a little oil in a cruse; and now I was gathering two sticks that I may go in and prepare it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.

² And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And there was a severe famine in Samaria.

¹ ¶ Now a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried unto Elisha, saying, Thy slave, my husband, is dead; and thou knowest that thy slave feared the LORD; and the creditor is come to take my two sons to be his slaves.

³¹ Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha, the son of Shaphat, shall remain upon him today.

¹ ¶ Then Elisha spoke unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household and sojourn wherever thou canst sojourn; for the LORD has called for a famine which shall come upon the land seven years. ² Then the woman arose and did as the man of God told her; and she went with her household and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. ³ And it came to pass at the end of the seven years that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines, and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her lands.

²¹ and said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

¹⁷ ¶ Behold, blessed is the man whom God chastens; therefore, do not despise not the correction of the Almighty.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

¹⁷ Thou dost renew thy plagues against me and increase thine indignation upon me, bringing up armies against me.

⁷ ¶ Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou come unto the perfection of the Almighty?

²⁶ Why dost thou write bitter things against me and make me carry the iniquities of my youth.

⁸ And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face.

⁶ know now that God has overthrown me and has compassed me with his net.

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God has touched me.

³ to the saints that are in the earth and to the excellent: all my delight is towards them.

⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my green growth is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

¹⁹ Koph Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD shall deliver him out of them all,

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he has left off to be wise and to do good.

² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presses me sore.

⁹ I was dumb, I opened not my mouth because thou didst it. ¹⁰ Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.

¹⁰ ¶ Hearken, O daughter, and consider and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father’s house;

¹⁴ and been plagued all day long and chastened every morning:

¹⁵ I am afflicted and destitute; from my youth up I have feared thee and been in awe of thee.

³⁰ If his sons forsake my law and do not walk in my judgments, ³¹ if they profane my statutes and do not keep my commandments, ³² then I will visit their rebellion with the rod and their iniquity with stripes.

¹⁴ He causes the hay to grow for the cattle and grass for the service of man, that he may bring forth bread out of the earth ¹⁵ and wine that makes glad the heart of man, making his face to shine with oil and bread which sustains man’s heart.

¹⁶ Moreover he called for a famine upon the land; he broke the whole staff of bread.

³⁴ the fruitful land into salt flats, because of the wickedness of those that dwell therein.

⁵ Teth He has given sustenance unto those that fear him; Jod He will ever be mindful of his covenant.

⁶³ ¶ I am a companion of all those that fear thee and of those that keep thy precepts.

⁵ As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall take them away with the workers of iniquity; and peace shall be upon Israel.

¹⁵ I will abundantly bless her provision; I will satisfy her poor with bread.

¹⁵ Ain The eyes of all wait upon thee, and thou givest them their food in due season.

⁷ He who does justice unto the oppressed; who gives bread to the hungry. The LORD looses the prisoners:

¹⁴ He who makes peace to be thy borders shall fill thee with the finest of the wheat.

¹⁷ ¶ A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

²⁴ ¶ The man that has friends must show himself to be a friend, and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

⁸ Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread of my judgment:

¹ ¶ For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob and will yet choose Israel and cause them to rest in their own land; and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.

⁷ Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? Her own feet shall carry her afar off to sojourn.

¹³ I reckoned that I had until morning. As a lion, he broke all my bones: from the morning even unto the night thou shalt make an end of me.

²¹ Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who has begotten me these, seeing I had lost my children and was desolate, a stranger removed from my land? and who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?

¹⁰ For as the rain comes down, and the snow from the heavens, and does not return there, but waters the earth and makes it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater:

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall chastise thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee; know therefore and see how evil and bitter it is, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God and that my fear is lacking in thee, saith the Lord GOD of the hosts.

¹ ¶ The word of the LORD that was given to Jeremiah concerning the famine.

¹⁰ For thus hath the LORD said, That after seventy years are accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and quicken my good word upon you to cause you to return to this place.

¹⁵ Samech All that passed by clapped their hands over thee and whistled and wagged their heads over the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men called The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

¹ ¶ Aleph I am a man that sees affliction in the rod of his wrath. ² Aleph He has led me and brought me into darkness, but not into light. ³ Aleph Surely he is turned against me; he turns his hand against me all the day. ⁴ Beth My flesh and my skin he has made old; he has broken my bones. ⁵ Beth He has built against me and compassed me with gall and travail. ⁶ Beth He has set me in dark places as those that are dead for ever. ⁷ Gimel He has hedged me about that I cannot get out; he has made my chain heavy. ⁸ Gimel Even when I cried and shouted, he shut out my prayer. ⁹ Gimel He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone; he has made my paths crooked. ¹⁰ Daleth He was unto me as a bear lying in wait and as a lion in secret places. ¹¹ Daleth He has made my ways crooked and pulled me in pieces; he has made me desolate. ¹² Daleth He has bent his bow and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my kidneys. ¹⁴ He I was a derision to all my people and their song every day. ¹⁵ He He has filled me with bitterness, he has made me drunk with wormwood. ¹⁶ Vau He has broken my teeth with gravel stones; he has covered me with ashes. ¹⁷ Vau My soul removed itself far from peace; I forgot about good. ¹⁸ Vau And I said, My strength and my hope of the LORD is perished. ¹⁹ Zain Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. ²⁰ Zain My soul shall have them still in remembrance because it is humbled in me.
