¹ ¶ Do not be envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them. ² For their heart studies robbery, and their lips speak evil. ³ ¶ Through wisdom the house shall be built, and with intelligence it shall be established: ⁴ And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and beautiful riches. ⁵ The wise man is strong; and the man of understanding is a mighty man of valour. ⁶ For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war, and in the multitude of counsellors there is saving health. ⁷ ¶ Wisdom, is too high for a fool; he shall not open his mouth in the gate. ⁸ He that devises to do evil shall be called a man of evil designs. ⁹ The thought of the foolish is sin, and the scorner is an abomination to men. ¹⁰ ¶ If thou art slack in the day of tribulation, thy strength shall be reduced. ¹¹ ¶ If thou forbear to deliver those that are drawn unto death and those that are ready to be slain, ¹² if thou should say, Behold, we knew it not; shall not he that weighs the hearts understand it? and he that keeps thy soul, does he not know it? and shall he not render to every man according to his works? ¹³ ¶ My son, eat of the honey, because it is good, and of the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste: ¹⁴ So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: if thou shalt find it, and in the end thy hope shall not be cut off. ¹⁵ ¶ Do not lay in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; do not spoil his resting place. ¹⁶ For a just man falls seven times and rises up again, but the wicked shall fall into evil. ¹⁷ ¶ Do not rejoice when thy enemy falls, and do not let thy heart be glad when he stumbles ¹⁸ lest the LORD see it and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him. ¹⁹ ¶ Do not meddle with those who are evil, neither be envious of the wicked; ²⁰ for the evil man shall not come to a good end; the fire of the wicked shall be put out. ²¹ ¶ My son, fear the LORD and the king, and do not meddle with those that are given to change, ²² for their calamity shall rise suddenly; and the ruin of them both, who shall know it? ²³ ¶ These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment. ²⁴ He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the peoples curse, nations shall abhor him: ²⁵ But unto those that rebuke him shall be delight, and a blessing of good shall come upon them. ²⁶ The lips of the one that gives a right answer shall be kissed. ²⁷ ¶ Prepare thy work without and make it fit for thyself in thine inheritance, and afterwards thou shalt build thine house. ²⁸ ¶ Do not be a false witness against thy neighbour, and do not flatter with thy lips. ²⁹ Do not say, I will do unto him as he has done unto me; I will render to the man according to his work. ³⁰ ¶ I went by the field of the slothful and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding, ³¹ and, behold, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered its face, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it and received chastening. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as one that travels and thy want as an armed man.

¹⁰ ¶ And Lot lifted up his eyes and beheld all the plain of the Jordan that it was well watered everywhere, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as a garden of the LORD like the land of Egypt as thou comest unto Zoar. ¹¹ Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed east; and they separated themselves the one from the other. ¹² Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tents toward Sodom. ¹³ But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

¹ ¶ And the two angels came to Sodom at evening; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom, and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground, ² and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your slave’s house and tarry all night and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early and go on your ways. And they said, No, but we will abide in the street all night. ³ And he pressed upon them greatly, and they turned in unto him and entered into his house, and he made them a banquet and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. ⁴ ¶ But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter; ⁵ and they called unto Lot and said unto him, Where are the men who came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us that we may know them. ⁶ And Lot went out at the door unto them and shut the door after him ⁷ and said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. ⁸ Behold now, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you and do ye to them as is good in your eyes; only unto these men do nothing, for they have come under the shadow of my roof. ⁹ And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This fellow came in to sojourn and is he to lift himself up as judge? Now will we deal worse with thee than with them. And they did great violence to the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. ¹⁰ Then the men put forth their hand and pulled Lot into the house with them and shut the door. ¹¹ And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

⁹ Gather not my soul with the sinners, nor my life with those who have blood on their hands:

¹ A Psalm of David. ¶ Aleph Do not be angry with the evildoers, neither be thou envious of the workers of iniquity.

⁷ ¶ Daleth Be silent before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not be angry with him who prospers in his way, with the man who brings wicked devices to pass.

³ For I became angry against the foolish when I saw the peace of the wicked.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without cause. ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol and whole as those that go down into the pit; ¹³ We shall find all kinds of riches, we shall fill our houses with spoil. ¹⁴ Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: ¹⁵ My son, do not walk in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

³¹ Envy thou not the oppressor and choose none of his ways.

²⁰ ¶ He that walks with wise men shall be wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed.

¹⁷ ¶ Let not thy heart envy sinners, but persevere in the fear of the LORD all day long.

¹⁹ ¶ Do not meddle with those who are evil, neither be envious of the wicked;

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, ²⁰ idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; which I denounce, as I have also told you in time past that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

⁵ Do ye think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy? ⁶ But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says, God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.

⁹ But David understood that Saul devised evil against him, and he said to Abiathar, the priest, Bring here the ephod.

⁶ And he thought it a small matter to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for now they had declared unto him the people of Mordecai; therefore, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, the people of Mordecai. ⁷ ¶ In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day and from month to month, and the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar was taken.

³⁵ They conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.

¹⁴ Behold, he travails with iniquity and has conceived of his own work and brought forth falsehood.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

³ Do not catch me away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, who speak peace to their neighbours, but evil is in their hearts.

⁴ He devises iniquity upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not abhor evil.

⁴ That they may shoot in secret at the perfect; suddenly do they shoot at him and fear not. ⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil matter; they attempt to hide the snares; they say, Who shall see them? ⁶ They search out iniquities; they perfect and put into effect that which they have invented in the inward thought of each one of them and that which they have devised in their heart.

² Who devise evil in their heart; they are continually gathered together for war.

¹⁴ there is perversion in his heart; he devises evil continually; he sows discord.

⁸ He that devises to do evil shall be called a man of evil designs.

⁴ No one calls for righteousness, nor do any judge by the truth; they trust in vanity, and speak vanities; they conceive trouble and bring forth iniquity.

³ To complete the evil with their hands, the prince demands, and the judge judges for a reward; and the great man speaks the desires of his heart: and they confirm it.

³ Then the princes of the priests and the scribes and the elders of the people assembled together in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, ⁴ and took counsel that they might take Jesus by guile and kill him.

²⁰ Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spoke again to them. ²¹ But they cried, saying, crucify him, crucify him. {Gr. stauroo – hang him on a stake}

¹⁰ and said, O full of all deception and all licentiousness, thou son of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

²⁶ For thus shall thy name be magnified for ever that it may be said, The LORD of the hosts is God over Israel and that the house of thy slave David be established before thee.

¹ ¶ Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn out her seven pillars:

¹ ¶ Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish plucks it down with her hands.

¹² He that makes the earth by his power, he that orders the world with his wisdom and extends the heavens with his intelligence:

⁹ For we are labourers together with God; ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

⁷ rooted and built up in him and confirmed in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

²² And Solomon’s provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour and sixty measures of meal, ²³ ten fat oxen and twenty oxen out of the pastures and one hundred sheep beside harts and roebucks and fallowdeer and fatted fowl. ²⁴ For he had dominion over all the region on the other side of the river and from Tiphsah even to Gaza, over all the kings on the other side of the river, and he had peace on all sides {Heb. with all the slaves} round about him. ²⁵ And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, each one under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon. ²⁶ And Solomon had forty thousand horses in his stables for his chariots and twelve thousand horsemen. ²⁷ And these officers maintained King Solomon and all that came unto king Solomon’s table, each one in his month; they made sure nothing was lacking. ²⁸ They also brought barley and straw for the horses and beasts of burden unto the place where he was, each one according to his charge.

²⁵ And Azmaveth, the son of Adiel, had charge of the king’s treasures and of the treasures of the fields, of the cities, and of the villages, and of the castles, was Jehonathan, the son of Uzziah; ²⁶ and over those that did the work of the tillage of the ground in the fields was Ezri the son of Chelub; ²⁷ and over the vineyards was Shimei, the Ramathite; over the increase of the vineyards for the wine cellars was Zabdi, the Shiphmite; ²⁸ and over the olive trees and the sycamore trees that were in the low plains was Baalhanan, the Gederite; and over the cellars of oil, Joash; ²⁹ and over the cows that fed in Sharon was Shitrai, the Sharonite; and over the cows that were in the valleys was Shaphat, the son of Adlai; ³⁰ over the camels, Obil, the Ishmaelite; and over the asses, Jehdeiah, the Meronothite; ³¹ and over the sheep was Jaziz, the Hagerite. All these were the princes of the substance which was King David’s.

² Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God, gold for the things of gold, and silver for the things of silver, and brass for the things of brass, and iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, black stones and of different colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance. ³ Moreover, because I have my delight in the house of my God, I have in my own treasury, gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the house of the sanctuary: ⁴ three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses; ⁵ the gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of the workmen. And who then is willing to consecrate the offering of his hands today unto the LORD? ⁶ Then the princes of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the princes of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king’s work, offered willingly ⁷ and gave for the service of the house of God five thousand talents of gold and ten thousand daily wages and ten thousand talents of silver and eighteen thousand talents of brass and one hundred thousand talents of iron. ⁸ And each one gave the precious stones that they had to the treasure of the house of the LORD, into the hand of Jehiel, the Gershonite. ⁹ Then the people rejoiced to have offered willingly because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD. Likewise, David the king rejoiced with great joy

¹⁸ Thus Solomon made all these vessels in great abundance, for the weight of the brass could not be found out. ¹⁹ And Solomon made all the vessels that were for the house of God, the golden altar also, and the tables upon which the showbread was set; ²⁰ likewise, the lampstands with their lamps, that they should burn according to the ordinance before the oracle, of pure gold; ²¹ and the flowers and the lamps and the tongs, he made of gold, of perfect gold; ²² also the snuffers and the basins and the spoons and the censers, of pure gold. Regarding the entry of the house, its inner doors for the most holy place and the doors of the house of the temple, were of gold.

⁴ And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah did. ⁵ And he persisted in seeking God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God; and in those days that he sought the LORD, God prospered him. ⁶ For he went forth and warred against the Philistines and broke down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod and built cities about Ashdod and among the Philistines. ⁷ And God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gurbaal and against the Mehunims. ⁸ And the Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah; and his name spread abroad even to the entrance of Egypt, for he strengthened himself exceedingly. ⁹ Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate and at the valley gate and at the corners and fortified them. ¹⁰ He also built towers in the desert and dug many wells, for he had much livestock, both in the low country and in the plains, husbandmen also and vine dressers in the mountains and in Carmel, for he loved agriculture. ¹¹ Moreover Uzziah had an army of fighting men that went out to war in companies, according to the number of their account by the hand of Jeiel, the scribe, and Maaseiah, the governor, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s princes.

³⁹ For the sons of Israel and the sons of Levi shall bring the offering of the grain, of the new wine and the oil, unto the chambers where are the vessels of the sanctuary and the priests that minister and the porters and the singers; and we will not forsake the house of our God.

⁵ and he had prepared for him a great chamber, where before they had kept the present, the frankincense, the vessels, the tithe of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, to the singers and the porters and the offerings of the priests. ⁶ But in all this time I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I went unto the king, and after certain days I was sent by the king. ⁷ And I came to Jerusalem and understood the evil that Eliashib had done attending Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. ⁸ And it grieved me sore; therefore, I cast forth all the household vessels of Tobiah out of the chamber. ⁹ Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers; and I caused the vessels of the house of God to be brought there again, with the present and the frankincense. ¹⁰ ¶ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them and that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, had fled each one to his inheritance. ¹¹ Then I contended with the rulers and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together and set them in their place. ¹² Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil unto the store houses. ¹³ And I made treasurers over the store houses, Shelemiah, the priest, and Zadok, the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah; and next to them was Hanan, the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.

²¹ that I may cause my friends to inherit existence and I will fill their treasures.

⁶ ¶ In the house of the righteous is much provision, but in the fruit of the wicked is trouble.

¹⁵ ¶ There is gold and a multitude of precious stones, but the lips of wisdom are a precious vessel.

²⁰ ¶ There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spends it up.

²³ ¶ Be thou diligent to know the countenance of thy sheep, and put thy heart into thy herds. ²⁴ For riches are not for ever, and does the crown endure to every generation? ²⁵ The tender grass shows itself, and the hay appears, and the herbs of the mountains are reaped. ²⁶ The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are for the price of the field. ²⁷ And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance of thy maidens.

⁵² And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who is instructed in the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a man, a husband of a house, who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.

⁷ They go forth in a great multitude; and in order, they shall see God in Zion.

¹⁴ With me is counsel, and existence; I am understanding; strength belongs to me.

²⁹ ¶ The way of the LORD is strength to the perfect, but it is terror to the workers of iniquity.

²² ¶ The wise man took the city of the mighty and cast down its strength in which it trusted.

¹⁹ Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten mighty men who are in the city.

¹⁴ There was a little city and few men within it; and a great king came against it and besieged it and built great bulwarks against it; ¹⁵ now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no one remembered that same poor man. ¹⁶ Then I said, Wisdom is better than strength: even though the poor man’s knowledge is despised, and his words are not heard. ¹⁷ The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that rules among fools. ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.

³¹ but those that wait for the LORD shall have new strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

¹¹ strengthened with all might, according to the power of his glory unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness,

¹⁴ ¶ When intelligence is lacking, the people shall fall, but in the multitude of counsellors there is salvation.

²² ¶ Without counsel purposes are disappointed, but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

¹⁸ ¶ Every thought must be ordered by counsel, and with intelligence war is made.

³¹ Or what king going to make war against another king does not sit down first and consult whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand?

²⁵ And every man that strives for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we, an incorruptible one. ²⁶ I therefore so run, not as unto an uncertain thing; so I fight, not as one that beats the air; ²⁷ but I keep my body under, and bring it into subjection, lest preaching to others, I myself should become reprobate.

¹⁰ ¶ Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. ¹¹ Put on the whole armour of God that ye may be able to stand firm against the wiles of the devil. ¹² For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the lords of this age, rulers of this darkness, against spiritual wickedness in the heavens. ¹³ Therefore, take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day and stand fast, all the work having been finished. ¹⁴ Stand firm, therefore, having your loins girt about with truth and having on the breastplate, {the coat of mail and coat of arms} of righteousness, ¹⁵ and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, ¹⁶ above all, taking the shield of faith, with which ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. ¹⁷ And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; ¹⁸ praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching in this with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints ¹⁹ ¶ and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth with confidence, to make known the mystery of the gospel, ²⁰ for which I am an ambassador in chains, that in this I may speak boldly as I ought to speak.

¹¹ But thou, O man of God, flee these things and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, charity, tolerance, meekness. ¹² Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, unto which thou art also called, having made a good profession before many witnesses.

⁷ I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith;

⁴ His sons are far from saving health, and they shall be crushed in the gate, and there shall be no one to deliver them.

⁷ ¶ When I went out to the gate to judgment, when I had my seat prepared in the plaza! ⁸ The young men would see me and hide themselves, and the aged would arise and stand. ⁹ The princes would refrain from talking and lay their hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ the voice of the principals would not be noticed, and their tongue would cleave to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ When the ears that heard me, called me blessed; and when the eyes that saw me, gave witness to me: ¹² because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him. ¹³ The blessing of the one that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me as a robe; and my diadem was judgment. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy; and the cause which I did not know I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked and caused their teeth to release the prey. ¹⁸ ¶ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand. ¹⁹ My root is spread out by the waters, and the dew shall remain upon my branches. ²⁰ My glory is renewed with me, and my bow is renewed in my hand. ²¹ They would hear me and wait, and keep silent at my counsel. ²² After my words they would not reply, but my reason dropped upon them. ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. ²⁴ If I laughed at them, they did not believe it; and they did not cast down the light of my countenance. ²⁵ I approved their way and sat at the head and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.

²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate;

⁵ His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight; as for all his enemies, he puffs at them.

⁵ O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep. ⁶ A carnal man does not know, neither does a fool understand this:

⁶ ¶ The scorner sought wisdom and found it not, but wisdom comes easy unto him that understands.

²⁴ ¶ The way of life is uphill to the wise, that he may separate himself from Sheol below.

²⁴ ¶ Wisdom appears upon the countenance of him that has understanding, but the eyes of a fool manifest his folly unto the ends of the earth.

²² ¶ Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither destroy the destitute in judgment:

⁸ Open thy mouth for those who cannot speak in the judgment of all the sons of death. ⁹ Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and destitute.

²¹ Those that made men to sin in word; those that laid a snare for him that reproved in the gate, and turned that which is just into vanity.

¹⁰ They hate him that rebukes in the gate, and they abhor him that speaks uprightly.

¹² For I have known of your many rebellions and your great sins that afflict the just and take a ransom and turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

¹⁵ Hate the evil and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate; it may be that the LORD God of the hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

¹⁴ But the natural man does not perceive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

⁴⁴ The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thy heart knoweth well that thou didst to David my father; therefore, the LORD has turned thy wickedness upon thine own head;

¹¹ For they intended evil against thee; they imagined a wicked device, but they did not prevail.

¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil,

²² ¶ Do they not err that meditate upon evil? but those that meditate upon good shall attain mercy and truth.

⁷ Howbeit he shall not think like this; not even in his heart shall he imagine this way of doing things, but his thought shall be to destroy and cut off nations not a few. ⁸ For he shall say, Are not my princes altogether kings? ⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel those of Jerusalem and of Samaria; ¹¹ shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols? ¹² Therefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord has performed his whole work upon Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will come upon the fruit of the pride of the heart of the king of Assyria, and upon the glory of his high looks. ¹³ For he said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have been prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and I have cast down as valiant ones those who were seated:

⁷ Certainly the greedy use evil measures: he devises wicked devices to ensnare the simple with lying words and to speak in judgment against the poor.

¹⁰ Thus hath the Lord GOD said: It shall also come to pass in that day, that words shall rise up in thy heart, and thou shalt conceive an evil thought: ¹¹ and thou shalt say, I will go up against the land of unwalled villages; I will go against those that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,

¹¹ He has come out of thee that has imagined evil against the LORD, a counsellor of Belial.

³⁰ backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

⁵ And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

²¹ And the LORD smelled a savour of rest, and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his childhood; neither will I again smite any more every living thing as I have done.

¹¹³ ¶ SAMECH. I hate vain thoughts; but I love thy law.

¹⁰ ¶ Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; strife and reproach shall cease.

⁷ for as he thinks in his soul, so is he; Eat and drink, he shall say unto thee, but his heart is not with thee.

⁸ ¶ Scornful men bring a city into a snare, but wise men turn away wrath.

⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness that thou may be saved. How long shalt thou entertain the thoughts of thy iniquity within thee?

²⁸ but I say unto you, That whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

⁴ And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Why think ye evil in your hearts?

¹⁹ For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

²² Repent therefore of this thy wickedness and pray God, if perhaps this thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

⁵ casting down reasonings and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ

¹ ¶ And David said in his heart, In the end I shall be killed some day by the hand of Saul; there is nothing better for me than that I should escape once and for all into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more within the borders of Israel; so shall I escape out of his hand.

⁵ But now that it is come upon thee, thou art grieved; it touches thee, and thou art troubled.

²⁸ Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard that the God of the age is the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth? He does not faint, nor is he weary; and there is no one that can attain to his intelligence. ²⁹ He gives power to the faint; and to those that have no might he increases strength. ³⁰ The young men faint and are weary; the children stumble and fall; ³¹ but those that wait for the LORD shall have new strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

⁴⁶ And lest your heart faint, and ye fear because of the news that shall be heard in the land; in one year shall the news come, and after that in the next year shall come the rumour, and then shall come the violence in the land, and the ruler over him who rules.

⁸ (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy food.)

¹ ¶ Therefore seeing we have this ministry, according to the mercy we have received, we fault not,

¹³ Therefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

³ For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be wearied in your souls and faint. ⁴ ¶ Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, fighting against sin. ⁵ And ye have quite forgotten the consolation which speaks unto you as unto sons, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art reproved of him:

³ and hast suffered, and doth suffer and for my name’s sake hast laboured and hast not fainted.

¹³ I know thy works and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s throne is, and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith, even in those days in which Antipas was my faithful witness, {or martyr}, who was slain among you, where Satan dwellest.

⁸ Then Abishai said to David, God has delivered thy enemy into thy hand today; now, therefore, let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear and pin him to the earth at once, and I will not need a second opportunity. ⁹ And David said to Abishai, Do not destroy him, for who has stretched forth his hand against the LORD’s anointed, and remained innocent?

¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked and caused their teeth to release the prey.

⁴ Deliver the poor and destitute; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

⁶ Is not rather the fast that I have chosen, to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the ties of oppression, to release into freedom those who are broken, and that ye break every yoke? ⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother?

³¹ And it so happened that a certain priest came down that way; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. ³² And likewise a Levite, when he came near the place and looked on him, he passed by on the other side.

²³ And they insisted with loud voices, asking that he be crucified. And the voices of them and of the princes of the priests prevailed. ²⁴ And Pilate gave sentence that it should be according to their request. ²⁵ And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder had been cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

¹⁷ Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.

³¹ And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the tribunal of the company that all Jerusalem was in an uproar ³² who immediately took soldiers and centurions and ran down unto them; and when they saw the tribunal and the soldiers, they left off beating Paul.

¹⁰ And when there arose a great dissension, the tribunal, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and to take him by force from among them and to bring him into the fortress.

²³ And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea and seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen, at the third hour of the night ²⁴ and provide them beasts that they may set Paul on and bring him safe unto Felix the governor. ²⁵ And he wrote a letter after this manner: ²⁶ Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sends greeting. ²⁷ This man was taken of the Jews and should have been killed by them; then I came with an army and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman. ²⁸ And when I desired to know the cause of why they accused him, I brought him forth into their council, ²⁹ whom I found to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds. ³⁰ And when it was told me how the Jews lay in wait to ambush the man, I sent straightway to thee and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell. ³¹ Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris. ³² On the next day they left the horsemen to go with him and returned to the fortress, ³³ who, when they came to Caesarea and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him. ³⁴ And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia, ³⁵ I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s judgment hall.

¹⁶ In this we have known the charity of God because he laid down his life for us; we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. ¹⁷ But whosoever has this world’s goods and sees his brother have need and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how does the charity of God abide in him?

⁶ The LORD kills, and he gives life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

⁷ And the LORD replied unto Samuel, Do not look on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him, for it is not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

²⁹ Yet a man is risen to pursue thee and to seek thy soul, but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God, and he shall hurl forth the souls of thine enemies as out of the middle of a sling.

¹¹ For he shall pay man according to his work and cause every man to find according to his ways.

⁹ Let wickedness consume the wicked; but establish the just: for the righteous God is he who tries the hearts and kidneys.

³ Thou hast proved my heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast refined me and hast found no iniquity; that which I thought did not pass through my mouth.

²¹ shall not God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

¹² Also unto thee, O Lord, belongs mercy, for thou renderest to every man according to his work.

⁹ It is he who placed our soul into life and did not suffer our feet to slip.

³ He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; he that keeps thee will not slumber.

⁸ The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he weighs all his goings.

² ¶ Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD weighs the hearts.

⁸ If thou seest violence unto the poor and the extortion of rights and justice in a province, do not marvel at the matter, for height is looking upon height; and there is one higher than they.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart; I try the kidneys, even to give each man according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings.

¹⁹ great in counsel and magnificent in works: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men to give unto each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings;

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy princes, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; furthermore, thou hast praised gods of silver and of gold, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand is thy soul and whose are all thy ways, thou hast never honoured.

²⁷ For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he shall reward everyone according to their works.

²⁸ for in him we live and move and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also of his lineage.

⁶ who will render to everyone according to his deeds:

¹⁶ in the day when God shall judge that which men have covered up, according to my gospel by Jesus, the Christ.

⁵ Therefore, judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each one have praise of God.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive according to that which they have done in the body, good or evil.

¹² For the word of God is alive and efficient and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. ¹³ Neither is there any created thing that is not manifested in his presence, but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him of whom we speak.

¹⁸ and he that lives and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen, and have the keys of Hades and of death.

¹⁸ ¶ And unto the angel of the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} in Thyatira write; These things, saith the Son of God, who has his eyes like unto a flame of fire and his feet like unto brilliant metal:

²³ And I will kill her children with death, and all the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} shall know that I AM he that searches the kidneys and hearts, and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

¹² And I saw the dead, great and small, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened; which is the book of life; and the dead were judged by those things which were written in the books, according to their works. ¹³ And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and Hades delivered up the dead which were in them; and the judgment of each one was according to their works. ¹⁴ And Hades and death were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. ¹⁵ And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

¹² And, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give each one according as his work shall be.

¹⁰ More to be desired are they than gold, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

¹⁰³ ¶ How sweet have been thy spoken words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

¹⁶ ¶ Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

²⁷ ¶ It is not good to eat much honey, so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

¹¹ Thy lips, O my spouse, drip as the honeycomb; honey and milk are under thy tongue, and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon.

¹ ¶ I came into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh and my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey; I have drunk my wine and my milk: eat, O friends; drink, beloved, drink abundantly.

¹⁵ He shall eat butter and honey that he may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.

⁴ And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

¹⁰ More to be desired are they than gold, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. ¹¹ Moreover by them is thy slave warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.

¹¹¹ ¶ I have taken thy testimonies as a heritage for ever; for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

¹ ¶ My son, if thou wilt receive my words and hide my commandments within thee ² so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom and apply thine heart to intelligence, ³ yea, if thou criest for understanding and givest thy voice unto intelligence, ⁴ if thou seekest her as silver and searchest for her as for hid treasures, ⁵ then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.

¹⁰ ¶ When wisdom enters into thine heart and knowledge is sweet unto thy soul,

¹³ ¶ Blessed is the man that has found wisdom and who brings to light intelligence, ¹⁴ for the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver and the fruits thereof more than fine gold. ¹⁵ She is more precious than precious stones, and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. ¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand and in her left hand riches and honour. ¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. ¹⁸ She is a tree of life to those that lay hold upon her, and blessed is every one that retains her.

¹⁸ For it is a delightful thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall be ordered together in thy lips.

¹⁸ For surely there is an end, and thy hope shall not be cut off.

¹⁶ Thy words were found, and I ate them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart: for thy name was called upon me, O LORD God of the hosts.

²¹ Jesus said unto him, If thou desire to be perfect, go and sell what thou hast and give it to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me.

²⁵ But whosoever has looked attentively into the perfect law of liberty and has persevered in it, not being a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, the same shall be blessed in their deed.

¹¹ ¶ And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water and said unto them, Is the seer here?

¹⁸ Then the king said to Doeg, Turn thou and fall upon the priests. And Doeg, the Edomite, turned and he fell upon the priests and slew on that day eighty-five men that wore a linen ephod. ¹⁹ And Nob, the city of the priests, he smote with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings and oxen and asses and sheep with the edge of the sword.

²⁰ Now, therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down, and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand. ²¹ And Saul said, Blessed are ye of the LORD, for ye have compassion on me. ²² Go, I pray you, prepare yet and know and see his place where he places his foot and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he deals with great prudence. ²³ See, therefore, and take knowledge of all the hiding places where he hides himself and come again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you; and it shall come to pass, if he is in the land that I will search him out with all the thousands of Judah.

⁸ He sits in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places he murders the innocent: his eyes are secretly set against the poor. ⁹ He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he catches the poor when he draws him into his net. ¹⁰ He crouches and hides himself, and many are those who fall under his power.

³² Tzaddi The wicked watches the righteous and seeks to slay him.

⁶ They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps when they wait for my soul.

³ For, behold, they lie in wait for my soul; the strong are gathered against me; I am not in rebellion, nor in sin, O LORD.

⁵ The proud have hid a snare for me and cords; they have spread a net; on the path they have set snares for me. Selah.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without cause.

²⁸ ¶ Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

¹⁸ And my people shall dwell in a habitation of peace and in secure dwellings and in the refreshing of rest.

¹⁹ But I was like a ram or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; for I did not understand that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living that his name may no longer be remembered.

⁴ and took counsel that they might take Jesus by guile and kill him.

²⁴ but their ambushes were understood by Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.

¹⁶ And when Paul’s sister’s son heard of their ambush, he went and entered into the fortress and told Paul.

³ asking for grace against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, they placing an ambush in the way to kill him.

¹⁰ David said furthermore, As the LORD lives, if the LORD does not smite him or his day comes to die or he descends into battle and perishes,

⁴ Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword and thrust me through with it lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not, for he was sore afraid. Therefore, Saul took his sword and fell upon it.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king’s wrath was pacified.

¹⁹ He shall deliver thee in six tribulations, and in the seventh no evil shall touch thee.

¹⁶ His work shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.

¹⁹ Koph Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD shall deliver him out of them all,

²⁴ Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

⁵ God shall likewise cast thee down for ever; he shall cut thee off and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.

¹⁷ ¶ A bad messenger shall fall into evil: but a faithful ambassador is medicine.

³² ¶ For his wickedness shall the wicked be cast out, but the righteous in his death has hope.

¹⁴ ¶ Blessed is the man that fears God always, but he that hardens his heart shall fall into evil. ¹⁵ ¶ As a roaring lion and a hungry bear, so is a wicked ruler over the poor people. ¹⁶ ¶ The prince void of intelligence is also a great oppressor, but he that hates covetousness shall prolong his days. ¹⁷ ¶ A man that does violence to the blood of any person shall flee all the way to the grave, and no one shall sustain him. ¹⁸ ¶ Whosoever walks in integrity shall be saved, but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall into one of them.

² The virgin of Israel has fallen; she shall not be able to rise again: she was forsaken upon her land; there is no one to raise her up.

¹⁴ Those that swear by the guiltiness of Samaria and say, As thy God of Dan lives; and, As the way of Beersheba lives, even they shall fall, and never rise up again.

⁸ Do not rejoice against me, O my enemy; for if I have fallen, I shall arise; if I sit in darkness, the LORD is my light. ⁹ I will bear the indignation of the LORD because I have sinned against him, until he has judged my cause and executed my judgment; he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness. ¹⁰ Then she that is my enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her who said unto me, Where is the LORD thy God? my eyes shall behold her: now she shall be trodden down as the mire of the streets.

²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him because he did not give God the glory, and he expired eaten of worms.

⁸ Because, brothers, we would not have you ignore our tribulation which was done unto us in Asia, that we were burdened beyond our strength, in such a manner that we despaired even of life: ⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; ¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a death and does deliver; in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

⁸ ¶ We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are unsure of our lives, but not in despair; ⁹ persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; ¹⁰ always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. ¹¹ For we who live are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. ¹² So then death works in us, but life in you.

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more, in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths often. ²⁴ Of the Jews five times I received forty stripes less one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned; three times I suffered shipwreck, night and day I have been in the deep; ²⁶ in journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by those of my nation, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; ²⁷ in labour and travail, in many watches, in hunger and thirst, in many fasts, in cold and nakedness.

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction shall come upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

²⁰ Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints, apostles, and prophets; for God has judged your cause upon her. ²¹ And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with impetus shall that great city Babylon be thrown down and shall be found no more at all.

²⁵ And it came to pass when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson that he may make us laugh. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport, and they set him between the pillars.

⁵ ¶ And when King David came to Bahurim, behold, a man of the family of the house of Saul came forth, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came forth cursing ⁶ and casting stones at David and at all the slaves of King David; and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. ⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial; ⁸ the LORD has returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom, thy son; and, behold, thou art taken in thy evil because thou art a bloody man. ⁹ Then Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, said unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse, my lord the king? Let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. ¹⁰ And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? So let him curse, because the LORD has said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Why hast thou done so? ¹¹ And David said to Abishai, and to all his slaves, Behold, my son, who came forth of my bowels, seeks my life; how much more now a son of Jemini? Let him alone, and let him curse, for the LORD has bidden him. ¹² It may be that the LORD will look on my affliction and that the LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day. ¹³ And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on the side of the mountain over against him and cursed as he went and threw stones at him and cast dust. ¹⁴ And the king and all the people that were with him arrived weary and refreshed themselves there.

²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of the one that hated me or lifted up myself when evil found him;

¹⁵ But in my adversity they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; yea, the smiters gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they tore me apart and did not cease:

¹⁹ Let not those that are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me; neither let those that hate me wink with the eye without a cause.

¹⁰ It is as death in my bones when my enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?

⁵ ¶ Whosoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker, and he that is glad regarding the calamity of someone else shall not go unpunished.

¹² But thou should not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should thou have rejoiced over the sons of Judah in the day they were lost; neither should thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

⁶ rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; ⁷ bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

²¹ ¶ Schin Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup shall also pass even unto thee; thou shalt be drunken and shalt vomit. ²² Tau The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will never cause thee to be carried away again; he will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will uncover thy sins.

¹⁵ And I am very sore displeased with the Gentiles that are at ease; for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction. ¹⁶ Therefore thus hath the LORD said, I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies; my house shall be built in her, saith the LORD of the hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.

²⁶ And he spoke unto the congregation, saying, Depart from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs lest peradventure ye be consumed in all their sins.

¹ ¶ Blessed is the man that does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful.

⁴ I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with hypocrites. ⁵ I have hated the congregation of evil doers and will not sit with the wicked.

¹¹⁵ ¶ Depart from me, ye evildoers; for I will keep the commandments of my God.

¹ ¶ Do not be envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them.

¹⁷ Therefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and do not touch the unclean thing; and I will receive you

¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

² For there shall be men who are lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, evil speakers, disobedient to their parents, unthankful, impure, ³ without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, without temperance, without meekness, without goodness, ⁴ traitors, rash, puffed up, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God, ⁵ having the appearance of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

⁴ And I heard another voice from the heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye not be partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. ⁵ ¶ The light of the wicked shall certainly be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his lamp shall be put out with him.

¹⁷ ¶ How often is the lamp of the wicked put out and their destruction comes upon them, and God distributes sorrows upon them in his anger.

¹⁷ The wicked shall be put into Sheol, all the Gentiles that forget God.

⁶ Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, with winds of whirlwinds: this shall be the portion of their cup.

⁹ ¶ The light of the righteous shall rejoice: but the fire of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁰ ¶ Whosoever curses his father or his mother, his fire shall be put out in obscure darkness.

¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for according to the work of his hands it shall be done unto him.

¹² But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁸ And the foolish said unto the prudent, Give us of your oil, for our lamps are going out.

¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own abominations; erratic stars, to whom is reserved gross darkness eternally.

³¹ And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did against the Egyptians; and the people feared the LORD and believed the LORD and his slave Moses.

¹ ¶ Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, of the sons of Reuben, took men; ² and they rose up against Moses, with two hundred and fifty men of the sons of Israel, princes of the congregation, of the council, men of renown; ³ and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron and said unto them, We have had enough of you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them; why then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?

⁵ and said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons do not walk in thy ways; therefore make us a king to judge us like all the Gentiles. ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. ⁷ And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee, for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me that I should not reign over them.

¹² And when ye saw that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, came against you, ye said unto me, No, but a king shall reign over us when the LORD your God was your king. ¹³ Now, therefore, behold the king whom ye have chosen and whom ye have desired! Behold, the LORD has set a king over you. ¹⁴ If ye will fear the LORD and serve him and hear his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigns over you continue following the LORD your God. ¹⁵ But if ye will not hear the voice of the LORD but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD shall be against you as it was against your fathers. ¹⁶ ¶ Now, therefore, stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes. ¹⁷ Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the LORD, and he shall send thunder and rain that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great which ye have done in the sight of the LORD in asking for a king over you. ¹⁸ So Samuel called unto the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel. ¹⁹ And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy slaves unto the LORD thy God that we not die, for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask for a king over us.

⁶ And he said unto his men, The LORD keep me from doing this thing unto my master, the LORD’s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.

¹³ ¶ And the word came to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. ¹⁴ Then David said unto all his slaves that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee, for we shall not otherwise escape from Absalom; make speed to depart lest he overtake us suddenly and bring evil upon us and smite the city with the edge of the sword. ¹⁵ And the king’s slaves said unto the king, Behold, thy slaves are ready to do whatever my lord the king shall choose. ¹⁶ And the king went forth and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, who were concubines, to keep the house. ¹⁷ And the king went forth and all the people after him and stopped in a place that was far off. ¹⁸ And all his slaves passed to his side, and all the Cherethites and all the Pelethites and all the Gittites, six hundred men who had come on foot with him from Gath, went before the king. ¹⁹ Then the king said to Ittai, the Gittite, Why dost thou also go with us? Return to thy place and abide with the king; for thou art a stranger and also an exile. ²⁰ Whereas thou didst come but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? Seeing I go where I go, return thou and take back thy brethren; mercy and truth are in thee. ²¹ And Ittai answered the king and said, As the LORD lives and as my lord the king lives, for life or for death, wherever my lord the king shall be, there also will thy slave be. ²² Then David said to Ittai, Go, therefore, and pass. And Ittai, the Gittite, passed and all his men and all the little ones that were with him. ²³ And all those of the land wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed the brook Kidron; and then the king also passed, and all the people passed unto the way of the wilderness. ²⁴ ¶ And behold Zadok also and with him all the Levites who bore the ark of the covenant of God, and they set down the ark of God. And Abiathar went up after all the people had finished leaving the city. ²⁵ But the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city; if I shall find grace in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again and show me both it and his tabernacle. ²⁶ But if he should say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here I am, let him do to me as seems good unto him. ²⁷ The king said also unto Zadok, the priest, Art not thou a seer? Return into the city in peace and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz, thy son, and Jonathan, the son of Abiathar. ²⁸ See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness until you send word to me. ²⁹ Then Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem, and they remained there. ³⁰ And David went up by the ascent of Mount Olivet and wept as he went up and had his head covered, and he went barefoot. And all the people that were with him covered each one his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. ³¹ ¶ And it was told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. Then David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into folly. ³² And it came to pass that when David came to the top of the mount to worship God there, behold, Hushai, the Archite came to meet him, with his coat rent and earth upon his head, ³³ Unto whom David said, If thou pass on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me; ³⁴ but if thou return to the city and say unto Absalom, I will be thy slave, O king as I have been thy father’s slave until now, so will I now also be thy slave; then thou may defeat the counsel of Ahithophel for me. ³⁵ Are not Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, there with thee? Therefore, it shall be that whatever thou shalt hear out of the king’s house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests. ³⁶ Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send unto me everything that you hear. ³⁷ So Hushai, David’s special companion came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

¹⁶ ¶ So when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? There is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

² I counsel thee to keep the king’s commandment and the word of the covenant that thou hast made with God. ³ Do not be hasty to rebel against him; do not persist in any evil thing, for he shall do whatsoever pleases him; ⁴ because the word of the king is his power and who may say unto him, What doest thou? ⁵ Whosoever keeps the commandment shall experience no evil thing, and a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment.

²¹ They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.

¹ ¶ Let every soul submit itself to the higher powers. For there is no power but of God, and the powers that be are ordained of God. ² Whosoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God, and those that resist shall receive condemnation to themselves. ³ For the magistrates are not a terror unto those who do good, but to the doer of evil. Is thy desire therefore to not fear the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same; ⁴ for he is a minister of God for thy good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain, for he is a minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil. ⁵ Therefore it is necessary that ye be subject, not only for punishment, but also for conscience sake. ⁶ For this cause ye also pay them tribute, for they are God’s ministers, attending continually to this very thing. ⁷ ¶ Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

¹ ¶ Admonish them to be subject to dominion and power, and to persuade those who have authority, that they be quick unto every good work.

¹³ ¶ Therefore, be subject to every human ordinance that is of the Lord, whether it be to a king or to a superior, ¹⁴ and unto governors as unto those that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those that do well. ¹⁵ For this is the will of God, that in well doing ye may silence the ignorance of vain men, ¹⁶ as being free, yet not using your liberty to cover maliciousness, but as slaves of God. ¹⁷ Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

³¹ And it came to pass as he had made an end of speaking all these words that the ground broke open under them; ³² the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their houses and all the men of Korah and all their goods. ³³ They and all that they had went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the congregation. ³⁴ And all Israel, those that were round about them, fled at the cry of them, for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. ³⁵ ¶ And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

¹ ¶ Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell down slain in Mount Gilboa. ² And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons, and the Philistines slew Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchishua, Saul’s sons. ³ And the battle went heavily against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was sore afraid of the archers. ⁴ Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword and thrust me through with it lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not, for he was sore afraid. Therefore, Saul took his sword and fell upon it. ⁵ And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died and his three sons and his armourbearer and all his men that same day together. ⁷ And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley and those that were on the other side of the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

⁷ where the people of Israel were slain before the slaves of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men. ⁸ For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the land, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

¹⁶ And the sons of Israel fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hand. ¹⁷ And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

¹¹ Who knows the power of thine anger? that thy wrath is not less than our fear.

¹⁴ ¶ The wrath of the king is as a messenger of death, but the wise man will avoid it.

² ¶ The fear of the king is as the roaring of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own soul.

¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment because he wanted to walk after commandments.

¹⁰ Where is thy king, that may save thee with all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou didst say, Give me a king and princes? ¹¹ I gave thee a king in my anger and took him away in my wrath.

¹⁵ Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, neither pleasing the poor, nor favoring the mighty; but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.

¹⁷ Ye shall not respect persons in judgment, but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s; and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

¹⁹ Thou shalt not twist that which is right; thou shalt not respect persons neither take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and perverts the words of the righteous.

⁷ Therefore, now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it, for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.

² How long will ye judge unjustly and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah. ³ Do right concerning the poor and fatherless; do justice to the poor and destitute. ⁴ Deliver the poor and destitute; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

⁴³ Who is wise and will observe these things and shall understand the mercies of the LORD?

⁶ To understand a parable and the interpretation; the words of the wise and their enigmas.

⁵ ¶ To respect the person of the wicked so that the righteous loses that which is rightfully his is not good.

¹⁷ ¶ Bow down thine ear and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my wisdom.

²¹ ¶ To have respect of persons in judgment is not good; even for a piece of bread, man will transgress.

¹ ¶ Who is as the wise man? and who is as he who knows the interpretation of all things? The wisdom of this man shall make his face to shine, and the coarseness of his face shall be changed.

⁹ Who is wise that he might understand this? and prudent that he might know this? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them; but the rebellious shall fall therein.

²⁴ Judge not according to the appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.

²⁰ Those that persist in sin rebuke before all, that the others may also fear. ²¹ I charge thee before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

⁴ Are ye not then judging in yourselves and are become judges of evil thoughts? ⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren, Has not God chosen the poor of this world that they might be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those that love him? ⁶ But ye have despised the poor. Do not the rich oppress you with tyranny and draw you with violence to the courts?

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, modest, benevolent, full of mercy and of good fruits, not judgmental, unfeigned.

¹⁷ And if ye invoke as Father, he who without respect of persons judges according to the work of each one, converse in fear the entire time of your sojourning here,

⁶ Thou shalt not pervert the rights of thy poor in his cause. ⁷ Keep thee far from a false matter; and slay thou not the innocent and righteous; for I will not justify the wicked.

²⁶ ¶ He that withholds the grain, the people shall curse him, but blessing shall be upon the head of him that sells it.

¹⁵ ¶ He that justifies the wicked and he that condemns the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

²⁷ ¶ He that gives unto the poor shall never lack, but he that hides his eyes from the poor shall have many a curse.

¹⁰ ¶ Do not accuse a slave in the presence of his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.

²⁰ Woe unto those that call evil good and good evil; that put darkness for light and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

²³ who justify the wicked for bribes and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

²⁴ And they shall go forth and look upon the carcasses of the men that rebelled against me; for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

¹³ For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them each one is given to greed; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one deals falsely. ¹⁴ They treat also the destruction of the daughter of my people lightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

¹⁰ Therefore I will give their wives unto others and their fields unto those that shall inherit them: for each one from the least even unto the greatest is given to greed; from the prophet even unto the priest every one deals falsely. ¹¹ For they have treated the destruction of the daughter of my people lightly, saying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace.

²² Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and ye strengthen the hands of the wicked that he should not leave his wicked way, encouraging him:

¹⁷ Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart; thou shalt rebuke thy neighbour in sincerity, that thou not bear sin for him.

¹³ For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knows of (because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them).

¹⁹ And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus hath the LORD said, Hast thou murdered and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him again, saying, Thus hath the LORD said, In the same place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall the dogs also lick thy blood, even thine. ²⁰ And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O my enemy? And he answered, I have found thee because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.

⁷ Then I meditated unto myself, and I rebuked the principals and the rulers and said unto them, Does each one of you exact usury of his brother? And I set a great assembly against them. ⁸ And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren, the Jews who had been sold unto the Gentiles; and will ye even sell your brethren? And shall they be sold unto us? Then they remained silent, for they had nothing to answer. ⁹ Also I said, What you do is not good, do you not walk in the fear of our God, that ye not be the reproach of our enemies the Gentiles?

⁸ And it grieved me sore; therefore, I cast forth all the household vessels of Tobiah out of the chamber. ⁹ Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers; and I caused the vessels of the house of God to be brought there again, with the present and the frankincense. ¹⁰ ¶ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them and that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, had fled each one to his inheritance. ¹¹ Then I contended with the rulers and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together and set them in their place.

¹⁷ Then I contended with the nobles of Judah and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do and profane thus the sabbath day?

²⁵ And I contended with them and cursed them and smote certain of them and plucked off their hair and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

²⁸ And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore, I chased him from me.

¹⁶ I was a father to the needy; and the cause which I did not know I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked and caused their teeth to release the prey. ¹⁸ ¶ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.

²³ ¶ He that rebukes a man, afterwards shall find more favour than he that flatters with the tongue.

⁴ For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

²⁰ Those that persist in sin rebuke before all, that the others may also fear.

² Preach the word; be instant in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

¹³ This witness is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

¹⁵ ¶ These things speak and exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise thee.

³⁸ And Pharaoh said unto his slaves, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? ³⁹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God has showed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art. ⁴⁰ Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled; only in the throne will I be greater than thou. ⁴¹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. ⁴² Then Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand and put it upon Joseph’s hand and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck; ⁴³ and he made him to ride in his second chariot; and they cried before him, Abrech Tender Father-honour this one as a precious father; and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁴ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee no one shall lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁵ And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnathpaaneah, and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁶ ¶ And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and went throughout all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁷ And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls. ⁴⁸ And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt and laid up the food in the cities, placing in each city the food of the field, which was round about. ⁴⁹ And Joseph gathered wheat as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left off numbering; for it was without number. ⁵⁰ And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath, the daughter of Potipherah, prince of On, bore unto him. ⁵¹ And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh; For God, said he, has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house. ⁵² And the name of the second he called Ephraim, For God, said he, has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. ⁵³ And the seven years of the abundance that was in the land of Egypt were ended. ⁵⁴ And the seven years of famine began to come, according as Joseph had said; and the famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. ⁵⁵ And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. And Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. ⁵⁶ And the famine was over all the face of the earth. Then Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold unto the Egyptians; for the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt. ⁵⁷ And all the earth came into Egypt to buy from Joseph because the famine was so sore in all lands.

²⁵ How forcible are the words of rectitude! But what does your argument reprove?

²³ ¶ A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!

¹ ¶ Of man are the preparations of the heart, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.

¹¹ ¶ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold inscribed with silver. ¹² As an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold, so is he who reproves a wise man who has a docile ear.

⁴⁶ ¶ Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face and humbled himself before Daniel and commanded that they should sacrifice presents and sweet odours unto him. ⁴⁷ The king answered unto Daniel and said, Certainly the God that is your God is God of gods and the Lord of the kings and the revealer of the mysteries, seeing thou could reveal this mystery. ⁴⁸ Then the king magnified Daniel and gave him many and great gifts and made him governor over the whole province of Babylon and prince of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁷ And Jesus, answering, said unto them, Render that which is of Caesar unto Caesar, and that which is of God unto God. And they marvelled at this. ¹⁸ ¶ Then come unto him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

³² Then the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth, that God is one, and there is none other outside of him; ³³ and to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the soul and with all the strength and to love his neighbour as himself is more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. ³⁴ Then Jesus, seeing that he responded wisely, said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that dared ask him any question.

¹⁷ And the king commanded that they bring great stones, costly stones, for the foundation of the house, and hewed stones. ¹⁸ And Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders hewed them, and the stonesquarers; so they prepared timber and stones to build the house.

⁷ And the house, when it was built, was put together of perfect stones made ready before they were brought there; so that there was no hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was being built.

²⁸ For which of you intending to build a tower does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has sufficient to finish it? ²⁹ Lest perhaps after he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, ³⁰ saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

¹⁶ Thou shalt not give false testimony against thy neighbour.

¹ ¶ Thou shalt not admit a false rumour; put not thine hand with the wicked to be a false witness.

⁹ Then Doeg, the Edomite, who was set over the slaves of Saul, answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob to Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he enquired of the LORD for him and gave him provision and gave him the sword of Goliath, the Philistine.

⁹ And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people ¹⁰ and set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out and stone him that he may die. ¹¹ And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people. ¹³ Then the two men, sons of Belial, came in and sat before him; and those men of Belial witnessed against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth blasphemed God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones that he died.

³ And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my slave Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fears God and has departed from evil and that he still retains his perfection, although thou didst incite me against him to destroy him without cause.

⁷ For without cause they have hid their net for me in a pit, which without cause they have dug for my soul.

¹¹ ¶ False witnesses rose up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.

A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech. ¶ Why dost thou boast of evil, O strong man? The mercy of God is day by day.

⁵ ¶ The true witness will not lie, but the false witness will utter lies.

⁵ ¶ A false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

⁹ ¶ The false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

²⁸ ¶ The false witness shall perish, but the man that hears shall stand fast in his word.

¹⁸ ¶ A man that bears false witness against his neighbour is a maul and a sword and a sharp arrow.

⁵⁹ Now the princes of the priests and the elders and all the council sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; ⁶⁰ but found none; though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses

²³ And the governor said, Why, what evil has he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

²⁵ But this comes to pass that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

²⁵ Therefore, leaving the lie, speak every man truth with his neighbour, for we are members one of another.

⁹ Lie not one to another, putting off the old man with his deeds

⁸ But the fearful and unbelieving and the abominable and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

¹⁵ But outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the fornicators and the murderers and the idolaters and whosoever loves and makes a lie.

¹¹ Then three thousand men of Judah went to the cleft of the rock Etam and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? What is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

And he pressed him; however, he would not go but blessed him. ²⁶ Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee? ²⁷ But because Absalom pressed him, he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him. ²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon, then kill him. Fear not; have I not commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant.

²² ¶ Say not thou, I will take vengeance, but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

²¹ ¶ If thy enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, ²² for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

³⁹ but I say unto you, That ye resist not with evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And if anyone desires to sue thee at the law, and take away thy clothing, let him have thy cloak also. ⁴¹ And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him two. ⁴² Give to him that asks of thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. ⁴³ ¶ Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. ⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless those that curse you, do good to those that hate you, and pray for those who speak evil about you, and persecute you;

¹⁷ Not repaying anyone evil for evil; procuring that which is good not only in the sight of God, but even in the sight of all men. ¹⁸ If it can be done, as much as is possible on your part, live in peace with all men. ¹⁹ Not defending yourselves, dearly beloved; but rather give place unto the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. ²⁰ Therefore, if thine enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

¹⁵ See that no one renders evil for evil unto anyone, but always follow that which is good, both among yourselves and to all men.

⁸ Even as I have seen, those that plow iniquity and sow wickedness, reap the same.

²⁷ Behold that which we have searched out, so it is; hear it and judge it for thyself.

¹⁷ ¶ Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that which I have seen,

²⁵ Nun I have been young and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

⁴² The righteous shall see it and rejoice, and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

⁶ ¶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise, ⁷ Who having no guide, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ provides her food in the summer and gathers her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as one that travels and thy want as an armed man. ¹² ¶ A wicked man of Belial walks with a perverse mouth. ¹³ He winks with his eyes, he speaks with his feet, he teaches with his fingers; ¹⁴ there is perversion in his heart; he devises evil continually; he sows discord. ¹⁵ Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; suddenly he shall be broken without remedy. ¹⁶ These six things does the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: ¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, ¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil, ¹⁹ a false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

³² But whosoever commits adultery with a woman has a fault in his heart; he that does it corrupts his own soul.

¹³ ¶ In the lips of the prudent wisdom is found and is a rod unto the back of him that is void of understanding.

¹¹ ¶ He that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread, but he that follows vain persons is void of understanding.

¹ ¶ So I returned and considered all the violence that is done under the sun and behold the tears of such as are oppressed, and they have no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but the oppressed had no comforter. ² Therefore I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive. ³ And I thought that better is he than both of them who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil works that are done under the sun. ⁴ ¶ Again, I considered all travail and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit. ⁵ The fool folds his hands together and eats his own flesh. ⁶ Better is a handful with rest than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit. ⁷ ¶ Then I returned, and I saw another vanity under the sun. ⁸ It is the man who is alone, without a successor, who has neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity and sore travail.

¹⁵ All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perishes for his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongs his days by his wickedness.

⁹ ¶ All this I have seen and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: the time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt. ¹⁰ Then I also saw that the wicked who were buried came into remembrance more than those who had frequented the holy place, and these were forgotten in the city where they had worked uprightly. This also is vanity. ¹¹ Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

¹⁷ ¶ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it, cursed shall be the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; ¹⁸ thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the grass of the field; ¹⁹ in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread until thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken, for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

⁴⁰ let thistles grow up unto me instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

²³ ¶ The fear of the LORD is unto life, and he that has it shall live satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

⁴ ¶ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore he shall beg in harvest and have nothing.

¹³ ¶ The slothful man says, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.

²¹ for the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall cause them to wear rags.

¹⁸ By much slothfulness the building decays, and through idleness of the hands the rain drips throughout the house.

⁵ And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be eaten up; and break down its wall, and it shall be trodden down:

³ ¶ For thus has the LORD said to every man of Judah and of Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and do not sow among thorns.

⁷ And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up and choked them.

²² And he that was planted among the thorns is he that hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

⁸ but that which bears thorns and briers is rejected and is near unto cursing, whose end shall be by fire.

¹¹ so that all Israel shall hear and fear and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

²¹ Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall die; so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear and fear.

²⁹ O that they were wise, if they were prudent, they would understand their latter end!

¹⁷ ¶ What is man that thou should magnify him and that thou should set thine heart upon him

⁴ Stand in awe, and sin not; meditate in your heart upon your bed, and desist. Selah.

¹⁹ But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.

⁵¹ And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was subject unto them, but his mother kept all these things in her heart.

⁶ ¶ Now these things became types of us, that we should not lust after evil things as they lusted.

¹¹ Now all these things happened unto them as types, and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

⁵ I will, therefore, remind you, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those that did not believe. ⁶ And the angels who did not keep their first estate but left their own habitation, he has reserved in eternal chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. ⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication and going after strange flesh, were set forth for an example, having received the judgment of eternal fire.

¹¹ ¶ And this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awaken ourselves out of sleep, for now is our saving health nearer than when we believed.

¹⁴ Therefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.

⁶ ¶ Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For those that sleep in the night, and those that are drunken are drunken in the night. ⁸ But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and charity, and for a helmet, the hope of saving health.

⁴ ¶ He that deals with a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

⁴ ¶ The soul of the sluggard desires, and attains nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
