²¹ and he drank of the wine and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. ²² And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brethren outside. ²³ Then Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

³⁶ ¶ And Abigail came to Nabal, and, behold, he held a banquet in his house like the banquet of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; therefore, she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, and he died.

¹³ And when David had called him, he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his bed with the slaves of his lord but did not go down to his house.

¹⁶ And they went out at noon. But Benhadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings that helped him. ¹⁷ And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first. ²⁹ ¶ For who shall be the woe? for who shall be the woe? for who contention? for who quarrels? for who the wounds without cause? who shall have redness of eyes? ³⁰ For those that tarry long at the wine; those that go to seek mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its colour in the cup, it goes down smoothly. ³² At the last it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lies down in the midst of the sea or as he that sleeps at the rudder. ³⁵ They have stricken me, thou shalt say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not; when I shall awake, I will seek it yet again.

⁴ It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor is beer for princes

²² Woe unto those that are mighty to drink wine and men of strength to mingle strong drink;

⁷ But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink; they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

¹² Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow shall be as this day, or much more excellent.

¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.

⁵ In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with a wineskin; he stretched out his hand with the scorners.

¹⁵ ¶ Woe unto him that gives his neighbours drink, that puts thy bottle to them, and makes them drunken also, that thou may look on their nakedness! ¹⁶ Thou hast filled thyself with dishonour instead of honour; drink thou also, and thy foreskin shall be uncovered; the cup of the LORD’s right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful vomit shall fall upon thy glory.

¹⁰ nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God.

²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; which I denounce, as I have also told you in time past that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, in which there is excess, but be filled with the Spirit,

³⁸ the censers of these sinners are sanctified against their own souls, and broad plates shall be made of them for a covering of the altar, for they offered with them before the LORD; therefore, they are sanctified, and they shall be a sign unto the sons of Israel.

²³ Then King Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, God do so to me and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life.

³⁶ But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those that hate me love death.

¹⁴ ¶ The wrath of the king is as a messenger of death, but the wise man will avoid it. ¹⁵ In the light of the king’s countenance is life, and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

¹² ¶ The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion, but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

⁴ ¶ If the spirit of the ruler rises up against thee, do not leave thy place; for meekness pacifies great sins.

¹⁰ They shall walk after the LORD; he shall roar like a lion; when he shall roar, then the sons shall come trembling from the west.

⁸ The lion has roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD has spoken, who can but prophesy?

¹⁰ Thou hast taken shameful counsel for thy house by cutting off many peoples and hast committed a sin against thy life.

⁹ And Jehoash, the king of Israel, sent to Amaziah, king of Judah, this reply, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife. And the wild beasts that were in Lebanon passed by and trode down the thistle.

¹⁷ ¶ He that is soon angry shall deal foolishly, and the man of wicked devices shall be hated.

²⁹ ¶ He that is slow to wrath is of great intelligence, but he that is short of spirit exalts folly.

³² ¶ He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city.

¹⁴ ¶ To release the waters (to speak rashly) is the beginning of contention; therefore, leave off strife before it gets started.

⁶ ¶ A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for strokes.

¹¹ ¶ The discretion of a man defers his anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

²⁴ ¶ Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who deals in proud wrath.

⁸ ¶ Do not go forth hastily to strive lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof when thy neighbour has put thee to shame. ⁹ Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself and do not uncover the secret to another ¹⁰ lest he that hears it put thee to shame and thine infamy not turn away.

⁶ to the praise of the glory of his grace, in which he has made us accepted in the beloved; ⁷ in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace, ⁸ which has over abounded in us in all wisdom and prudence;

³² and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another even as God has forgiven you in Christ.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not and do not be liars against the truth.

¹ ¶ Where do the wars and disputes come from among you? From here that is to say, of your lusts which fight in your members?

¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as one that travels and thy want as an armed man.

⁴ ¶ He that deals with a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

⁴ ¶ The soul of the sluggard desires, and attains nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

¹⁵ ¶ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and the negligent soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁴ ¶ The slothful man hides his hand in his bosom and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as one that travels and thy want as an armed man.

¹³ ¶ The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. ¹⁴ ¶ As the door turns upon his hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed. ¹⁵ ¶ The slothful hides his hand in his bosom; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth. ¹⁶ ¶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can give him counsel.

³ Those that were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them; ⁴ but the prudent took oil in their vessels with their lamps. ⁵ While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. ⁶ And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go ye out to meet him. ⁷ Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. ⁸ And the foolish said unto the prudent, Give us of your oil, for our lamps are going out. ⁹ But the prudent answered, saying, Lest there be not enough for us and you, but go ye rather to them that sell and buy for yourselves. ¹⁰ And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and those that were ready went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut.

²⁴ Then he who had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown and gathering where thou hast not scattered; ²⁵ therefore, I was afraid and went and hid thy talent in the earth; behold, thou hast what is thine. ²⁶ His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful slave, thou knewest that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I have not scattered; ²⁷ therefore, it was expedient for thee to have put my money to the bankers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with interest. ²⁸ Take, therefore, the talent from him and give it unto him who has ten talents.

⁵ ¶ Ye also, giving all diligence to the same, show forth virtue in your faith; and in virtue, knowledge; ⁶ and in knowledge, temperance; and in temperance, patience; and in patience, fear of God; ⁷ and in fear of God, brotherly love; and in brotherly love, charity. ⁸ For if these things are in you and abound, they shall not let you be idle nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ But he that lacks these things is blind and walks feeling the way with his hand, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. ¹⁰ Therefore, brethren, give all the more diligence to make your calling and election sure; for doing these things, ye shall never fall. ¹¹ Because in this manner the entrance shall be abundantly administered unto you in the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

⁶ They search out iniquities; they perfect and put into effect that which they have invented in the inward thought of each one of them and that which they have devised in their heart.

⁴ ¶ The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.

¹¹ For who among men knows the things of man, except the spirit of man which is in him? Even so no one has known the things of God, but the Spirit of God.

A Psalm of David. ¶ Help, LORD; for the merciful man ceases, for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

¹⁴ ¶ Whosoever boasts in a gift of falsehood is like clouds and wind without rain.

² ¶ Let another man praise thee and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

²⁸ which my soul yet seeks, but I find not: one man among a thousand I have found, but a woman among all those I have not found.

¹ ¶ Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem and see now and find out and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that execute judgment, that seek the truth; and I will pardon the city.

² The merciful man of the earth is missing: and there is no one upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt each man his brother with a net.

² Therefore, when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They already have their reward.

⁸ I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man comes, shall he find faith on the earth?

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are: extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

²⁸ Then Peter said, Behold, we have left all and followed thee.

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and said of him, Behold a true Israelite, in whom is no guile!

³⁹ and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me for ever for the good of them and of their sons after them:

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, blameless.

³⁹ For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

¹² ¶ For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world and more abundantly towards you.

¹¹ ¶ For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, ¹² teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live temperately, righteously, and godly in this present world;

³ ¶ For I rejoiced greatly when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou dost walk in the truth. ⁴ I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my sons walk in the truth.

³ But David’s men said unto him, Behold, we are afraid here in Judah, how much more than if we go to Keilah against the army of the Philistines? ⁴ Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will deliver the Philistines into thy hand.

⁴ And as the light of the morning when the sun rises, of a morning shining forth without clouds, as the shining forth through light rain upon the tender grass of the earth:

⁴ He shall judge the poor of the people; he shall save the children of the destitute and shall break in pieces the violent.

⁹ For, behold, thine enemies, O LORD, for behold, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

⁴ The king’s strength is that he loves judgment; thou dost establish equity; thou dost execute judgment and righteousness in Jacob.

⁶ My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; he that walks in the way of perfection, he shall serve me. ⁷ He that works deceit shall not dwell within my house; he that tells lies shall not tarry in my sight. ⁸ I will early destroy all the wicked of the land, that I may cut off all the workers of iniquity from the city of the LORD.

¹² ¶ It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness, for the throne is to be established with righteousness.

²⁶ ¶ A wise king scatters the wicked and brings the wheel over them.

⁵ Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

¹⁴ ¶ The king that judges the poor with truth, his throne shall be established for ever.

¹ ¶ Behold, one king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall preside unto judgment.

⁴⁶ If they have sinned against thee (for there is no man that does not sin) and thou should be angry with them and deliver them to the enemy so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near,

³⁶ If they sin against thee (for there is no man who does not sin,)and thou art angry with them and deliver them over before their enemies so that those that take them carry them away captives unto an enemy land far off or near,

⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one.

¹⁴ What is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?

⁴ How then can man be justified with God? Or how can he that is born of a woman be clean?

⁵ Behold, the pain of my iniquity has caused me to writhe; my mother conceived me so that sin might be removed from me.

²⁰ For surely there is not a just man upon earth that in doing good does not sin.

⁴ For although I have nothing on my conscience, yet am I not hereby justified, but he that judges me is the Lord.

² For we all offend in many things. If any man offends not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to govern the whole body with restraint.

⁸ ¶ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

³⁵ Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in measurement of land, in weight, or in other measure.

²⁵ The graven images of their gods ye shall burn in the fire; thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them nor take it unto thee lest thou be snared therein; for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God. ²⁶ Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house lest thou become an anathema like it, but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is anathema.

¹³ ¶ Thou shalt not have in thy bag different weights, a great and a small. ¹⁴ Thou shalt not have in thy house different measures, a great and a small. ¹⁵ But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have, that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God gives thee.

¹ ¶ A false balance is abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight.

¹¹ ¶ A just weight and balance are the LORD’s; all the weights of the bag are his work.

²³ ¶ Double weights are an abomination unto the LORD, and a false balance is not good.

⁴ ¶ Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, and cut off the poor of the land, ⁵ saying, When the month is over, we will sell the wheat; and after the sabbath day we will open the storehouse of bread, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit; ⁶ that we may buy the poor for money and the needy for a pair of shoes and sell the refuse of the wheat. ⁷ The LORD has sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

¹⁰ Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked and the scant measure that is abominable? ¹¹ Can I be pure with false balances and with a bag of deceitful weights?

⁸ But the fearful and unbelieving and the abominable and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

³ The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.

⁸ ¶ The way of the perverse man is crooked and strange, but as for the pure, his work is right.

¹⁵ ¶ Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

¹⁶ Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

¹⁵ For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

⁶⁶ And all those that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, Who shall this child be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

⁴⁶ And it came to pass that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. ⁴⁷ And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

⁴³ For a good tree does not bring forth corrupt fruit; neither does a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. ⁴⁴ For every tree is known by its own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush do they gather grapes.

¹¹ And the LORD said unto him, Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the dumb or the deaf or the seeing or the blind? Am not I the LORD?

⁹ He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

¹⁸ ¶ Open my eyes, and I shall behold the wonders of thy law.

¹³ Therefore, I speak to them in parables because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which says, By hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand, and seeing ye shall see and shall not perceive; ¹⁵ for this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and should understand with their heart and should be converted, and I should heal them. ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.

¹⁸ to open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and inheritance among those who are sanctified by the faith that is in me.

¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him; ¹⁸ illuminating the eyes of your understanding, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints

⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

¹¹ ¶ He that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread, but he that follows vain persons is void of understanding.

³⁰ ¶ I went by the field of the slothful and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding, ³¹ and, behold, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered its face, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it and received chastening. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as one that travels and thy want as an armed man.

⁶ So the shipmaster came to him and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that he will have compassion upon us that we not perish.

¹¹ not slothful in earnest care, but fervent in the Spirit, serving the Lord,

¹¹ ¶ And this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awaken ourselves out of sleep, for now is our saving health nearer than when we believed.

³⁴ Watch diligently, and sin not; for some do not know God: I speak this to your shame.

¹⁴ Therefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.

¹⁰ For even when we were with you, this we declared unto you, that if anyone desires not to work neither should he eat.

¹⁰ Is there any thing of which it may be said, See, this is new? it has been already of old time which was before us.

⁷ ¶ He is a merchant who has the balances of deceit in his hand; he loves to oppress. ⁸ And Ephraim said, Surely I have become rich, I have found riches for myself; no one shall find iniquity in me, nor sin in all my labours.

⁶ that no one oppress and defraud his brother in any matter because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

¹² But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? ¹³ Man never knew its price; neither is it found in the land of the living. ¹⁴ ¶ The deep saith, It is not in me; and the sea saith, It is not with me. ¹⁵ It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for its price. ¹⁶ It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx or the sapphire. ¹⁷ Gold cannot equal it, nor can diamond; neither shall it be exchanged for vessels of fine gold. ¹⁸ No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls; for wisdom is better than precious stones. ¹⁹ The emerald of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

¹⁵ She is more precious than precious stones, and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

¹¹ For wisdom is better than precious stones; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

²⁰ ¶ The tongue of the just is as choice silver, but the understanding {Heb. heart} of the wicked is worth little. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of wisdom.

⁷ ¶ The lips of the wise disperse wisdom, but the heart of the foolish does not so.

²³ ¶ A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!

¹⁶ ¶ How much better is it to acquire wisdom than gold! and to acquire understanding is worth more than silver!

²¹ ¶ The wise in heart is called a man of understanding; and the sweetness of the lips shall increase doctrine.

²⁴ ¶ Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and medicine to the bones.

¹² As an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold, so is he who reproves a wise man who has a docile ear.

⁹ And the wiser the preacher became that much more did he teach wisdom to the people, causing them to listen and to search things out, and he composed many proverbs. ¹⁰ The preacher sought to find willing words and upright writings, even words of truth. ¹¹ The words of the wise are as goads and as nails hammered into place, those of the teachers of the congregations, who are placed under one Shepherd.

¹⁴ How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? ¹⁵ And how shall they preach if they have not been sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those that announce the gospel of peace, of those that announce the gospel of that which is good!

²⁹ Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good for edification, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

²⁶ If thou at all take thy neighbour’s clothing as a pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him before the sun goes down; ²⁷ for only that is his covering, it is his clothing to cover his flesh, in which he must sleep; and it shall come to pass, when he cries unto me, that I will hear, for I am merciful.

¹⁶ to deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger who flatters with her words,

³ For the lips of the strange woman drop as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil,

⁵ That they may keep thee from the woman belonging to someone else, from the stranger who flatters with her words.

¹⁰ and, behold, a woman met him with the attire of a harlot, and subtil of heart.

¹⁵ ¶ With anxiety shall he that is surety for a stranger be afflicted, and he that hates suretiship shall live securely.

²⁶ ¶ Be not thou one of them that strike hands or of them that are sureties for debts. ²⁷ If thou hast nothing to pay, why should they take away thy bed from under thee?

²⁷ For a whore is a deep ditch and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

¹³ ¶ Take his garment that is surety for a stranger and take a pledge of him that is surety for a strange woman.

⁶ ¶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was desirable to the eyes, and a tree of covetousness to understand, she took of its fruit and ate and gave also unto her husband with her; and he ate. ⁷ And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves girdles.

¹² If wickedness was sweet in his mouth, if he hid it under his tongue, ¹³ if it seemed good unto him, and he did not forsake it, but savored it within his mouth, ¹⁴ his food shall be changed in his bowels, it shall be the gall of asps within him. ¹⁵ He has swallowed down riches, but he shall vomit them up again; God shall cast them out of his belly. ¹⁶ He shall suck the poison of asps; the viper’s tongue shall slay him. ¹⁷ He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter. ¹⁸ He shall restore the work that was not his; according to the substance that he took; neither shall he devour, nor rejoice. ¹⁹ Because he oppressed and forsook the poor; because he has violently taken away houses which he did not build, ²⁰ therefore, he shall not feel quietness in his belly; he shall not escape with that which he desired.

¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. ¹⁸ But he does not know that the dead are there and that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹⁵ He He has filled me with bitterness, he has made me drunk with wormwood. ¹⁶ Vau He has broken my teeth with gravel stones; he has covered me with ashes.

²⁵ choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season,

¹ ¶ Now after the death of Joshua, it came to pass that the sons of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first to fight against them? ² And the LORD said, Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hands.

²⁹ If these people were under my hand, then I would remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army and come out.

⁷ Behold, all ye sons of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.

¹⁸ ¶ Then the sons of Israel arose and went up to the house of God and asked counsel of God and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the sons of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.

²³ (And the sons of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until evening and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the sons of Benjamin, my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)

²⁶ ¶ Then all the sons of Israel and all the people went up and came unto the house of God and wept and sat there before the LORD and fasted that day until evening and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. ²⁷ And the sons of Israel enquired of the LORD (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days, ²⁸ and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the sons of Benjamin, my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into thy hand.

²⁶ Then Abner called to Joab and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? Dost thou not know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long shall it be then before thou bid the people to return from following their brethren? ²⁷ And Joab replied, As God lives, if thou had not spoken, surely from this morning the people would have left off from following their brothers.

¹⁷ ¶ Then Amaziah, king of Judah, took advice and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another face to face. ¹⁸ And Joash, king of Israel, sent to Amaziah, king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife. And behold, the wild beasts that were in Lebanon, passed by, and trode down the thistle. ¹⁹ Thou sayest, Behold, I have smitten Edom; and with this thy heart lifts thee up to boast; abide now at home; why should thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou should fall, even thou, and Judah with thee? ²⁰ But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they had sought after the gods of Edom. ²¹ So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another face to face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which is of Judah. ²² But Judah fell before Israel, and they fled each man to his tent. ²³ And Joash, the king of Israel, took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.

¹⁴ ¶ When intelligence is lacking, the people shall fall, but in the multitude of counsellors there is salvation.

²² ¶ Without counsel purposes are disappointed, but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

⁶ For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war, and in the multitude of counsellors there is saving health.

⁸ ¶ Do not go forth hastily to strive lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof when thy neighbour has put thee to shame.

³¹ Or what king going to make war against another king does not sit down first and consult whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand?

¹⁶ Thou shalt not travel about as a talebearer among thy people; neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour. I am the LORD.

¹³ A talebearer reveals secrets, but he that is of a faithful spirit conceals the matter.

³ ¶ He that keeps his mouth keeps his life: but he that opens his lips often shall have calamity.

²⁹ ¶ The evil man flatters his neighbour and leads him into the way that is not good.

⁸ ¶ The words of a talebearer seem smooth, but they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

²¹ ¶ My son, fear the LORD and the king, and do not meddle with those that are given to change,

²⁰ ¶ Where there is no wood, the fire goes out, so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases. ²¹ Charcoal for burning coals and wood for fire, and a contentious man to kindle strife. ²² The words of a talebearer seem smooth, but they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

¹⁸ For they that are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly and by smooth words and blessings deceive the hearts of the simple.

¹² ¶ Honour thy father and thy mother that thy days may be lengthened upon the land which the LORD thy God gives thee.

¹⁷ In the same manner he that curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.

⁹ For any man that curses his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.

¹⁶ Cursed is he that dishonours his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

⁵ ¶ The light of the wicked shall certainly be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his lamp shall be put out with him.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from the light into the darkness and chased out of the world.

⁹ ¶ The light of the righteous shall rejoice: but the fire of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁰ for the evil man shall not come to a good end; the fire of the wicked shall be put out.

¹¹ There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks at his father, and despises the teaching of his mother, the ravens shall pluck it out of the river, and the young eagles shall eat it.

⁴ For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother, and, He that curses father or mother, let him die without recourse.

¹³ Then the king said to the slaves, Bind him hand and foot and take him away and cast him into the darkness outside; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁸ And the foolish said unto the prudent, Give us of your oil, for our lamps are going out.

¹⁰ For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother, and, Whosoever curses father or mother shall most definitely die. ¹¹ But ye say, It is enough if a man shall say to his father or mother, It is all Corban, (that is to say, my gift to God) whatever with which thou mightest be profited by me. ¹² And ye suffer him to do no more for his father or for his mother, ¹³ invalidating the word of God with your tradition, which ye have given; and many such like things do ye.

¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own abominations; erratic stars, to whom is reserved gross darkness eternally.

¹⁶ Though he heaps up silver as the dust and prepares raiment as the clay, ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

⁴ ¶ Do not labour to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom.

⁸ ¶ He that by usury and unjust gain increases his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.

²⁰ ¶ The man of truth shall abound with blessings, but he that makes haste to be rich shall not be absolved.

²² ¶ He that hastens to be rich has an evil eye and does not consider that poverty shall come upon him.

⁶ Shall not all these take up a parable against him and a taunting enigma against him and say, Woe to him that multiplied that which was not his! And for how long would he pile thick clay upon himself?

⁴ I brought it forth, said the LORD of the hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief and into the house of him that swears falsely by my name; and it shall remain in the midst of his house and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

² If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, said the LORD of the hosts, I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yea, I have cursed them already because ye do not lay it to heart.

⁹ For those that desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.

³⁵ Vengeance and recompense are mine, in the time when their foot shall slide; for the day of their calamity is at hand and that which is determined upon them makes haste.

¹² It may be that the LORD will look on my affliction and that the LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day.

¹⁴ Wait for the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart; wait, I say, for the LORD.

³⁴ ¶ Koph Wait on the LORD and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the earth; when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.

¹³ ¶ Whosoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

²⁹ Do not say, I will do unto him as he has done unto me; I will render to the man according to his work.

³¹ but those that wait for the LORD shall have new strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

²⁵ Teth The LORD is good unto those that wait in him, to the soul that seeks him. ²⁶ Teth It is good to wait quietly in the salvation of the LORD.

³⁹ but I say unto you, That ye resist not with evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

¹⁷ Not repaying anyone evil for evil; procuring that which is good not only in the sight of God, but even in the sight of all men. ¹⁸ If it can be done, as much as is possible on your part, live in peace with all men. ¹⁹ Not defending yourselves, dearly beloved; but rather give place unto the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

¹⁵ See that no one renders evil for evil unto anyone, but always follow that which is good, both among yourselves and to all men.

²³ who, when he was cursed, did not return the curse; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but committed himself to him that judges righteously;

⁹ not rendering evil for evil or curse for curse, but to the contrary, blessing, knowing that ye are called, that ye should possess a blessing by inheritance.

¹⁹ Therefore, let those that are afflicted according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls unto him as unto a faithful Creator, doing good.

¹⁰ ¶ Double weights and double measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

¹⁰ Ye shall have just balances and a just ephah and a just bath.

⁷ ¶ He is a merchant who has the balances of deceit in his hand; he loves to oppress.

⁵ saying, When the month is over, we will sell the wheat; and after the sabbath day we will open the storehouse of bread, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit;

⁴ Daleth Show me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.

¹² Lamed Who is the man that fears the LORD? Him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.

²³ Mem The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and he delights in his way.

⁸ ¶ The wisdom of the sane is to understand his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.

⁹ ¶ The heart of man devises his way, but the LORD directs his steps.

⁶ I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and upon the people of my wrath will I send him to take spoil and to take prey and to ready them that they might be tread down like the mire of the streets. ⁷ Howbeit he shall not think like this; not even in his heart shall he imagine this way of doing things, but his thought shall be to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

²³ O LORD, I know that man is not the lord of his own way: it is not in man that walks to order his steps.

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy princes, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; furthermore, thou hast praised gods of silver and of gold, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand is thy soul and whose are all thy ways, thou hast never honoured.

²⁸ for in him we live and move and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also of his lineage.

¹⁵ When any person commits a trespass and sins through ignorance, in the holy things of the LORD, then he shall bring for the expiation of his guilt unto the LORD a ram without blemish out of the flocks, in thy estimation of two shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for his guilt;

¹⁰ ¶ No stranger shall eat of the holy thing; a guest of the priest or a hired servant shall not eat of the holy thing. ¹¹ But when the priest shall buy any soul with his money, he shall eat of it, and he that is born in his house, they shall eat of his bread. ¹² If the priest’s daughter becomes married unto a stranger, she may not eat of that which is set apart of the holy things. ¹³ But if the priest’s daughter becomes a widow or divorced and has no child and is returned unto her father’s house as in her youth, she shall eat of her father’s bread; but no stranger shall eat thereof. ¹⁴ And if a man eats of the holy thing by error, then he shall add the fifth part thereof unto it and shall give it unto the priest with the offering that he ate. ¹⁵ And they shall not profane the holy things of the sons of Israel, which they set apart unto the LORD,

⁹ And if it is an animal which is offered unto the LORD, all that anyone gives of such unto the LORD shall be holy. ¹⁰ He shall not alter it nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good; and if he shall exchange one animal for another, then it and the one exchanged thereof shall belong to the sanctuary.

³⁰ And all the tithes of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s; it is holiness unto the LORD. ³¹ And if anyone desires to redeem anything of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.

² When a man vows a vow unto the LORD or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not defile his word: he shall do according to all that proceeded out of his mouth. ³ ¶ But the woman, when she shall vow a vow unto the LORD and bind herself by a bond, being in her father’s house in her youth, ⁴ and her father hears her vow and her bond with which she has bound her soul, and her father shall remain silent regarding it, then all her promises shall stand, and every bond with which she has bound her soul shall stand. ⁵ But if her father disallows her in the day that he hears all of her vows and of her bonds with which she has bound her soul, they shall not stand, and the LORD shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her. ⁶ But if she had at all a husband when she vowed or pronounced anything out of her lips, with which she bound her soul, ⁷ if her husband heard it and remained silent regarding it in the day that he heard it, then her vows shall stand, and her bonds with which she bound her soul shall stand. ⁸ But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it, then her vow which she vowed and that which she pronounced with her lips, with which she bound her soul, shall be of no effect, and the LORD shall forgive her. ⁹ But every vow of a widow and of her that is divorced, with which they have bound their souls, shall stand. ¹⁰ And if she vowed in her husband’s house or bound her soul by a bond with an oath; ¹¹ if her husband heard it and remained silent regarding it and did not disallow her, then all her vows shall stand, and every bond with which she bound her soul shall stand. ¹² But if her husband has utterly made them void on the day he heard them, then whatever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand; her husband has made them void, and the LORD shall forgive her. ¹³ Every vow and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void. ¹⁴ But if her husband remained silent regarding this from day to day; then he establishes all her vows or all her bonds, which are upon her; he confirms them because he remained silent regarding this in the day that he heard them. ¹⁵ But if he shall in any way make them void after that he has heard them, then he shall bear her iniquity. ¹⁶ These are the statutes which the LORD commanded Moses between a man and his wife and between the father and his daughter, being yet in her youth in her father’s house.

⁷ A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

⁴ ¶ When thou dost vow a vow unto God, do not defer to pay it; for he has no pleasure in fools; pay that which thou hast vowed. ⁵ It is better that thou should not vow than that thou should vow and not pay. ⁶ Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was ignorance. Why should thou cause God to be angry because of thy voice and destroy the work of thine hands?

⁸ Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, In what have we robbed thee? In the tithes and the offerings. ⁹ Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye, even this whole nation, have robbed me. ¹⁰ Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, and there shall be food in my house, and prove me now in this, said the LORD of the hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

³³ ¶ Again, ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not perjure thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths;

⁹ ¶ And David answered Rechab and Baanah, his brother, the sons of Rimmon, the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD lives, who has ransomed my soul out of all adversity, ¹⁰ when one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him and slew him in Ziklag as a reward for his tidings. ¹¹ How much more unto wicked men who have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? Shall I not, therefore, now require his blood of your hand and remove you from the earth? ¹² Then David commanded his young men, and they slew them and cut off their hands and their feet and hung them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.

³¹ And he brought forth the people that were therein and put them under saws and under harrows of iron and under axes of iron and made them pass through the brickkiln, and thus did he unto all the cities of the sons of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

⁵ Whosoever secretly slanders his neighbour, I will cut off; he that has a high look and a proud heart I will not suffer.

⁸ ¶ A king that sits in the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.

²⁷ For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff and the cummin with a rod. ²⁸ Grain is thrashed to make bread; but he will not ever be threshing it, nor shall he grind it with the wheel of his cart, nor crush it with the teeth of his thrashing instrument.

⁷ And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.

⁸ Certainly there is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the Almighty gives them understanding.

³⁰ ¶ The scars of past wounds are medicine for evil, and living reproof reaches the most secret places in the inward parts.

¹⁵ which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, accusing and also excusing their reasonings one with another)

² but remove from ourselves every hidden shameful thing, not walking in craftiness, nor adulterating the word of God, but in the manifestation of the truth, commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. ³ But if our gospel is hid, it is hid to those that are lost, ⁴ In whom the god of this age has blinded the understanding of those who do not believe, that the light of the gospel of the glory of the Christ, who is the image of God, should not shine in them. ⁵ For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your slaves for Jesus’ sake. ⁶ For the God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts to bring forth the light of the knowledge of the clarity of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

¹² For the word of God is alive and efficient and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. ¹³ Neither is there any created thing that is not manifested in his presence, but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him of whom we speak.

¹⁹ And in this we know that we are of the truth and have our hearts certified before him. ²⁰ ¶ And if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence in God;

⁷ ¶ For the king trusts in the LORD, and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved.

⁷ He shall abide before God for ever; He is aware of mercy and truth which preserve him.

¹ A Psalm of David. ¶ I will sing of mercy and judgment; unto thee, O LORD, will I sing.

⁶ ¶ By mercy and truth iniquity is purged, and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

⁵ And in mercy shall the throne be established; and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging and seeking judgment and hastening righteousness.

³² Thou shalt rise up before grey hair and honour the face of the elder and fear thy God. I am the LORD.

³¹ ¶ Old age is a crown of glory if it is found in the way of righteousness.

²³ ¶ Thus hath the LORD said, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches; ²⁴ but let him that glories glory in this, that he understands me and knows me, that I am the LORD who does mercy, judgment, and righteousness in the earth: for in these things I delight, said the LORD.

¹⁴ I have written unto you, fathers, that ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, that ye are strong and the word of God abides in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

²⁵ ¶ Smite a scorner, and the simple will become prudent, and reproving one that has understanding, he will understand knowledge.

⁹ Therefore, in this manner shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged; and this shall be all the fruit, the removal of his sin; when he shall return all the stones of the altar, as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder that they may not raise up the groves, or the images of the sun.

⁵ But he was wounded for our rebellions; he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and by his stripes healing was provided for us.

¹⁰ For they verily for a few days chastened us as it seemed good unto them, but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
