¹⁴ ¶ The spirit of man will bear his infirmity, but a broken spirit who can bear?

²⁰ ¶ Then Job arose and rent his mantle and shaved his head and fell down upon the ground and worshipped ²¹ and said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

⁷ ¶ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head. ⁸ And he took a potsherd to scratch himself with, and he was sitting among the ashes. ⁹ Then his wife said unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? Blaspheme God and die. ¹⁰ But he said unto her, Thou hast spoken as any of the foolish women speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

¹⁴ then thou dost scare me with dreams and terrify me with visions. ¹⁵ And my soul thought it better to be strangled and desired death more than my bones.

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe unto me; and if I am righteous, I will not lift up my head, being full of dishonour and of seeing my affliction. ¹⁶ And thou dost increase. Thou dost hunt me as a fierce lion; turning and doing marvels in me. ¹⁷ Thou dost renew thy plagues against me and increase thine indignation upon me, bringing up armies against me.

⁹ What profit is there in my blood when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? Shall it declare thy truth? ¹⁰ Hear, O LORD and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper.

³ When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my green growth is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presses me sore. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For my iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

¹⁰ It is as death in my bones when my enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? ¹¹ Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? Wait thou for God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the saving health of my countenance and my God.

³ because of the voice of the enemy because of the oppression of the wicked; for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.

⁵ Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me.

² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; my sore bled in the night and ceased not; my soul refused to be comforted. ³ I remembered God and cried out; I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.

¹⁴ LORD, why dost thou cast off my soul? why dost thou hide thy face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and destitute; from my youth up I have feared thee and been in awe of thee. ¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath goes over me; thy terrors have cut me off.

²² For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

³ He heals the broken hearted, and he binds up their wounds.

¹³ ¶ A joyful heart makes a beautiful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is abated.

²² ¶ A joyful heart shall do good like a medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

³³ And he takes with him Peter and James and John and began to be alarmed and to be anguished ³⁴ and said unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death; tarry ye here, and watch.

³ And not only this, but we even glory in the tribulations, knowing that the tribulation works patience; ⁴ and patience, experience; and experience, hope; ⁵ and the hope shall not be ashamed, because the love of God is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the charity of Christ? shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword? ³⁶ (As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.) ³⁷ Nevertheless, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

¹² ¶ For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world and more abundantly towards you.

⁷ So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with too much grief.

⁹ And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, I will rather glory in my weaknesses that the power of Christ may dwell in me. ¹⁰ Therefore I am content in weaknesses, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake, for when I am weak, then am I strong.

² ¶ My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into diverse trials,

⁶ ¶ In which ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are afflicted in diverse temptations,
