¹ ¶ Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered and said, ² Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should thy lies make men be silent? Shalt thou mock, and shall no man make thee ashamed? ⁴ For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean before thine eyes. ⁵ But oh, that God would speak and open his lips against thee ⁶ and that he would show thee the secrets of wisdom! For thou dost deserve double according to sound wisdom; and thou dost know that God has forgotten thee because of thine iniquity. ⁷ ¶ Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou come unto the perfection of the Almighty? ⁸ It is higher than the heavens; what canst thou do? It is deeper than Sheol; how canst thou know it? ⁹ The measure of it is longer than the earth and broader than the sea. ¹⁰ If he cuts off, or shuts up, or gathers together, then who can hinder him? ¹¹ For he knows the vain men; and he sees the iniquity; will he not then understand it? ¹² The vain man shall make himself understood, though man is born like a wild ass’s colt. ¹³ ¶ If thou would prepare thine heart and stretch out thine hands toward him; ¹⁴ if there is any iniquity in thy hand and thou dost put it far away and dost not consent that wickedness dwell in thy habitations, ¹⁵ then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; thou shalt be strongly established and shalt not fear; ¹⁶ and thou shalt forget thy misery and remember it as waters that passed away; ¹⁷ and thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning. ¹⁸ And thou shalt trust because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig and sleep in safety; ¹⁹ thou shalt lie down, and no one shall make thee afraid; and many shall make requests unto thee. ²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall consume themselves, and they shall have no refuge, and their hope shall be agony of the soul.

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

¹ ¶ Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered and said,

² How long wilt thou speak such things and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?

³ Shall vain words have an end? Or what is it that emboldens thee to answer?

² How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? Understand, and afterwards we will speak.

¹¹ The man with an evil tongue shall not be established in the earth; evil shall hunt the man of violence to overthrow him.

¹⁹ ¶ In the multitude of words there is no lack of rebellion, but he that refrains his lips is wise.

¹⁸ Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans and of the Stoics encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? others, He seems to be a setter forth of new gods, because he preached unto them Jesus and the resurrection.

¹⁹ ¶ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

⁴ He who invokes God and he answers him is mocked by his friend; the just and perfect man is laughed to scorn.

⁴ That ye are certainly forgers of lies; ye are all physicians of no value.

⁹ Would it be good for him to search you out? As one man mocks another, do ye so mock him?

² Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind? ³ Should he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable?

² Now there are only mockers with me, upon whose bitterness my eye continues to gaze.

³ Suffer me that I may speak; and after I have spoken, mock on.

²⁵ And if it is not so now, who will make me a liar or reduce my speech to nothing?

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up the scorn like water?

¹⁶ With immature hypocritical mockers, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

¹⁶ Fill their faces with shame that they may seek thy name, O LORD.

¹⁷ I did not sit in the assembly of the mockers, nor did I become puffed up by reason of thy prophecy; I sat alone because thou hast filled me with indignation.

¹⁴ And if anyone does not hearken unto our word by this epistle, note that one and do not join with him, that he may be ashamed.

⁸ sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that the adversary may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

¹⁸ how that they told you, That in the last time there would be mockers, who would walk after their own ungodly desires.

¹⁰ Then should my comfort grow; I would hold on to sorrow without mercy; for I have not contradicted the words of the Holy One.

²⁹ Turn now, and there is no iniquity; return again to look for my righteousness in this. ³⁰ If there is iniquity in my tongue or if my taste cannot discern the torments.

²⁰ If I have sinned, what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? Why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?

² I know it is so of a truth, but how shall a man be justified with God? ³ If he desires to contend with him, he will not be able to answer him one thing of a thousand.

⁷ Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is no one that can deliver out of thy hand.

⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous; and God has taken away my right. ⁶ In my judgment he was a liar, my arrow wound is grievous without my having committed a transgression.

² Dost thou think this to be right, when thou didst say, I am more righteous than God?

¹⁵ but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to respond to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and reverence,

³ Oh, that I knew where I might find him! That I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order judgment before him and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me and understand what he would say unto me. ⁶ Will he plead against me with his great power? No, but rather he would put it in me. ⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; and should I escape for ever from the one who condemns me.

³⁵ Oh that someone would hear me! Behold, my mark is, that the Almighty will testify for me, even though my adversary had written down the charges.

⁶ Behold, I am according to thy wish in God’s stead; I also am formed out of the clay. ⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee. ⁸ ¶ Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying, ⁹ I am clean without rebellion, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Behold, God sought occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy, ¹¹ he put my feet in the stocks, he guards all my paths. ¹² Behold, in this thou art not just; I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. ¹³ Why dost thou strive against him? For he will not answer all of thy words. ¹⁴ ¶ Nevertheless, in one or two manners God speaks to the one who does not see. ¹⁵ In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; ¹⁶ then he opens the ears of men and seals their instruction, ¹⁷ that he may withdraw the man from his own work and cover the man from pride. ¹⁸ Thus he keeps back his soul from the pit and his life from perishing by the sword.

¹ ¶ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said, ² Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

¹ ¶ Moreover, the LORD answered Job and said, ² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? Let him that disputes with God answer this. ³ Then Job answered the LORD and said, ⁴ Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay my hand over my mouth. ⁵ Once I have spoken; but I will not answer; even twice, but I will proceed no further.

⁸ Wilt thou disannul my judgment? Wilt thou condemn me, that thou may be justified?

⁷ ¶ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz, the Temanite, My wrath has been kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken by me in uprightness, as my slave Job has.

²⁹ The hidden things of the LORD our God are uncovered unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

¹³ And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guiltiness, seeing that thou our God hast intervened that we no longer be oppressed because of our iniquities and hast given us such an escape as this,

⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has hardened himself against him and remained in peace?

⁵ For thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

⁸ Hast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?

¹¹ Are the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee?

²⁸ And unto man he said, Behold, that the fear of the Lord, is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

¹⁴ Nun The secret of the LORD is for those that fear him, and he will show them his covenant.

¹⁰ He has not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

⁴³ He delivered them many times, but they rebelled at his counsel and were brought low for their iniquity. ⁴⁴ Nevertheless he would look upon their affliction and hear their cry ⁴⁵ and remember his covenant with them and repent according to the multitude of his mercies. ⁴⁶ He also caused those that carried them captives to have mercy upon them.

²² Chet It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed because his mercies never diminish.

²⁸ But there is a God in the heavens who reveals the mysteries, and he has made known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall happen at the end of days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, is this:

⁴⁷ The king answered unto Daniel and said, Certainly the God that is your God is God of gods and the Lord of the kings and the revealer of the mysteries, seeing thou could reveal this mystery.

³⁵ that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

²⁵ ¶ Now to him that is able to confirm you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was concealed from times eternal ²⁶ but now is made manifest, and by the writings of the prophets, by the commandment of God eternal, declared unto all the Gentiles, that they might hear and obey by faith,

⁹ But as it is written, That which eye has not seen nor ear heard neither has entered into the heart of man is that which God has prepared for those that love him. ¹⁰ But God has revealed this unto us by his Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. ¹¹ For who among men knows the things of man, except the spirit of man which is in him? Even so no one has known the things of God, but the Spirit of God.

⁵ which in other generations was not made known unto the sons of men as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit,

⁹ who does great things that no one can understand, and marvels that have no explanation;

¹⁴ Behold, these are parts of his ways; but how little a portion have we heard of him? For the thunder of his power, who shall understand?

²³ Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out; he is excellent in power and in judgment, and in plenty of righteousness he will not afflict.

¹⁹ Thy way was in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps were not known.

³ Gimel Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

¹¹ ¶ He has made every thing beautiful in his time: even the world he has given over to their will, in such a way that no man can attain to this work that God makes from the beginning to the end.

²⁸ Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard that the God of the age is the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth? He does not faint, nor is he weary; and there is no one that can attain to his intelligence.

²⁷ All things are delivered unto me of my Father, and no one has known the Son but the Father, neither has anyone known the Father except the Son and he unto whom the Son will reveal him.

³³ ¶ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments and his ways past finding out!

¹⁰ But God has revealed this unto us by his Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

¹⁶ For who has known the understanding of the Lord? Who has instructed him? But we have the understanding of Christ.

⁸ Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of the Christ

¹⁸ Is it true that God is to dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee, how much less this house which I have built!

¹² Is not God in the height of the heavens? Behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

⁶ Sheol is naked before him, and hell has no covering.

⁵ Look unto the heavens and see; and behold the heavens which are higher than thou.

¹¹ For as the heavens are high above the earth so does he increase his mercy over those that fear him.

⁶ Thy knowledge is wonderful beyond my ability to comprehend; it is high, I cannot understand it. ⁷ ¶ Where shall I go from thy spirit? or where shall I flee from thy presence? ⁸ If I ascend to the heavens, thou art there: if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, thou art there.

¹³ Let them praise the name of the LORD; for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above earth and heavens.

² ¶ It is the glory of God to conceal the word, but the honour of kings is to search out the word. ³ For the height of the heavens and depth of the earth and for the heart of kings, there is no investigation.

⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts more than your thoughts.

² Though they dig unto Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down;

¹⁸ may be able to well comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height ¹⁹ and to know the charity of the Christ, which passes all knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.

²⁴ For he looks unto the ends of the earth and sees under the whole heaven, ²⁵ To make a weight for the wind and to supply water by measure,

⁵ With tremendous things in righteousness wilt thou answer us, O God of our saving health, who art the hope of all the ends of the earth and of those that are afar off upon the sea: ⁶ ¶ Thou art he who doth establish the mountains by thy strength, being girded with valour: ⁷ He who stills the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves and the tumult of the Gentiles. ⁸ They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy wonders; thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice.

⁹ If I take the wings of the dawn and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, ¹⁰ even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two put ten thousands to flight if their strong One had not sold them, and the LORD had not delivered them up?

¹⁸ For he makes sore, and binds up; he wounds, and his hands make whole.

¹² Behold, he shall take away, who can cause him to restore? Who shall say unto him, What doest thou? ¹³ God will not withdraw his anger, and under him those who help, unto pride are bent over.

¹⁴ Behold, he shall break down, and it shall not be built again; he shall shut up a man, and no one shall be able to open unto him.

²⁹ When he gives rest, who then can make trouble? If he hides his face, who then can behold him? This applies to a nation and the same to a man,

⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

⁸ and hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy; thou hast set my feet in a wide place.

²⁷ I am the first that has taught these things unto Zion, and unto Jerusalem I brought the news.

³⁵ and all the inhabitants of the earth are counted as nothing; and in the army of heaven and in the inhabitants of the earth, he does according to his will; nor is there anyone who can interfere with his hand and say unto him, What doest thou?

⁷ ¶ And to the angel of the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} in Philadelphia write; These things, saith he that is Holy and True, he who has the key of David, who opens and no one shuts and shuts, and no one opens;

¹³ And thou shalt say, What does God know? How can he judge through the darkness? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are his hiding place, and he does not see; and he walks in the circuit of heaven.

²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps. ²² There is no darkness nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. ²³ For he will not lay upon man more than that which is just; that he should enter into judgment with God.

¹¹ He has said in his heart, God has forgotten; he hides his face; he will never see it.

¹⁴ Thou hast seen it, for thou dost behold mischief and spite to requite it with thy hand: the poor commits himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.

²² This thou hast seen, O LORD; do not keep silence; O Lord, do not be far from me.

¹¹ The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

⁸ If thou seest violence unto the poor and the extortion of rights and justice in a province, do not marvel at the matter, for height is looking upon height; and there is one higher than they.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who shall know it? ¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart; I try the kidneys, even to give each man according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings.

² And they do not consider in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness; now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face.

¹³ Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil and canst not look on iniquity: why dost thou look upon those that deal treacherously and hold thy tongue when the wicked devour the man that is more righteous than he?

²⁴ But Jesus did not trust himself unto them because he knew all men ²⁵ and needed not that any man should give testimony, for he knew what was in man.

¹³ Neither is there any created thing that is not manifested in his presence, but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him of whom we speak.

²³ And I will kill her children with death, and all the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} shall know that I AM he that searches the kidneys and hearts, and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

¹³ He takes the wise in their own prudence, and the counsel of his adversaries is turned to folly.

⁵ Does the wild ass bray when he has grass? Does the ox low over his fodder?

² No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you. ³ But I have a heart as well as you; I am not inferior to you; and who shall not be able to say as much again?

¹⁴ What is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?

⁵ Who freed the wild ass, and who loosed its bands? ⁶ Unto whom I made a house in the wilderness, and his dwellings in the salty land. ⁷ He laughs at the multitude of the city, neither does he hearken to the voice of the exactor of tribute. ⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches after every green thing.

⁵ Behold, the pain of my iniquity has caused me to writhe; my mother conceived me so that sin might be removed from me.

⁹ Surely the sons of Adam are vanity, and the sons of nobles are a lie; to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity. ¹⁰ Trust not in violence and become not vain in the taking of spoil; if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

²² But I was ignorant and did not understand; I was as a beast before thee.

⁶ A carnal man does not know, neither does a fool understand this:

² Surely I am more carnal than any man and have not the understanding of a man. ³ I neither learned wisdom nor have the knowledge of the holy. ⁴ Who has ascended up into heaven, or descended? who has gathered the wind in his fists? who has bound the waters in a garment? who has established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

¹⁸ I said in my heart concerning the estate of the sons of men that God might manifest them and that they might see that they themselves are beasts one to another.

²⁴ a wild ass used to the wilderness that breaths according to the desire of her soul; from her lust, who shall stop her? All those that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools

¹⁶ Be unanimous among yourselves, not high minded, but accommodating the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

¹⁸ ¶ Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you seems to be wise in this age, let them become a fool that they may be wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He takes the wise in their own craftiness. ²⁰ And again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

³ among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind and were by nature the children of wrath, even as all the others.

²⁰ But, O vain man, dost thou desire to know that faith without works is dead?

¹³ ¶ Who is wise and ready among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not and do not be liars against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not that which descends from above, but is earthly, natural, diabolical. ¹⁶ For where there is envy and contention, there is confusion and every perverse work. ¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, modest, benevolent, full of mercy and of good fruits, not judgmental, unfeigned.

³ ¶ And Samuel spoke unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you and prepare your hearts unto the LORD and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

¹⁴ And he did evil because he did not prepare his heart to seek the LORD.

³ Nevertheless, good things have been found in thee, in that thou hast burned down the groves of the land and hast prepared thy heart to seek God.

⁸ I would certainly seek God, and unto God would I commit my affairs;

⁵ if thou would seek God early and make thy supplication to the Almighty, ⁶ if thou wert pure and upright, surely now he would awake upon thee and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

²¹ ¶ Make up thy friendship now with him, and thou shalt have peace; thereby good shall come unto thee. ²² Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

³¹ Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.

⁸ and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not set their heart aright and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.

⁹ My eye mourns by reason of affliction; LORD, I have called daily upon thee; I have stretched out my hands unto thee.

⁶ I stretched forth my hands unto thee; my soul thirsted after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.

⁴⁷ And that slave who knew his lord’s will and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

⁷ ¶ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the righteous cut off?

⁵ ¶ Certainly thy wickedness is great and thine iniquities have no end.

²³ If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tent;

³² Teach me that which I do not see; if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more.

² When thou shalt come unto me, I will walk in the way of perfection and understand. I will walk in the midst of my house in the perfection of my heart.

¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; likewise, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear; your hands are full of blood.

³⁰ ¶ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each one according to his ways, said the Lord GOD. Repent and turn yourselves from all your iniquities, so iniquity shall not be your ruin. ³¹ Cast away from you all your iniquities by which ye have rebelled, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

³ Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth; for every one that steals (as it is written on one side of the roll) shall be destroyed; and every one that swears (as it is written on the other side of the roll) shall be destroyed. ⁴ I brought it forth, said the LORD of the hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief and into the house of him that swears falsely by my name; and it shall remain in the midst of his house and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

⁵ but he did not look upon Cain and his present. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. ⁶ ¶ Then the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe unto me; and if I am righteous, I will not lift up my head, being full of dishonour and of seeing my affliction.

²⁶ For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

¹ A Psalm of David. ¶ The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

¹ To the Overcomer:
for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. ¶ God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in tribulation.

⁶ ¶ Caph Surely he shall not be moved for ever; Lamed the righteous shall be in eternal remembrance. ⁷ Mem He shall not be afraid of evil rumours; Nun his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. ⁸ Samech His heart is established; he shall not be afraid, Ain until he sees his desire upon his enemies.

⁶ Then I shall not be ashamed, when I have insight unto all thy commandments. ⁷ ¶ I will praise thee with uprightness of heart when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.

²⁶ ¶ In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence, and there his sons shall have hope.

¹ ¶ The wicked flee when no man pursues, but the righteous are bold as a young lion.

¹² ¶ For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world and more abundantly towards you.

⁸ I desire, therefore, that the men in every place, pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and strife.

²⁸ ¶ And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

¹⁹ And in this we know that we are of the truth and have our hearts certified before him. ²⁰ ¶ And if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence in God; ²² and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

¹¹ that I will establish my covenant with you, that all flesh shall not be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

⁵¹ And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh; For God, said he, has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house.

¹⁵ My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream,

¹¹ or darkness, that thou canst not see, and abundance of waters cover thee.

⁷ They drink and forget their need and remember their misery no more.

²⁰ To such a one, God will remove the concerns common to others, for God shall answer him with joy from his heart.

¹ ¶ And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will sing unto thee; though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou hast comforted me. ² Behold, O God my saving health, I will trust and not be afraid for JAH, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he also is become saving health unto me.

⁴ Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.

⁹ For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so I have sworn that I would not be wroth again with thee, nor reprehend thee.

¹⁶ He who blesses himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that swears in the earth shall swear by the God of truth because the former troubles shall be forgotten and shall be covered from my eyes.

²¹ The woman, when she is in travail, has pain, because her hour is come; but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembers the anguish no more, for joy that a man is born into the world.

¹⁴ And I said unto him, lord, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are those who came out of great tribulation and have washed their long robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. ¹⁵ Therefore, they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple, and he that is seated on the throne shall dwell among them. ¹⁶ They shall hunger no more neither thirst anymore; neither shall the sun be thrust upon them nor any other heat. ¹⁷ For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall govern them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters, and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

¹⁰ ¶ and blessed the LORD before all the congregation; and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.

¹¹ Then all his brethren came unto him and all his sisters and all those that had been of his acquaintance before and ate bread with him in his house; and they condoled him and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him; each one also gave him an ewe, and an earring of gold. ¹² So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep and six thousand camels and a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand she asses. ¹³ He also had seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first, Jemima, and the name of the second, Kezia, and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch. ¹⁵ And in all the land no women were found as beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. ¹⁶ After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations. ¹⁷ So Job died, being old and full of days.

⁶ And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light and thy uprightness as the noonday.

¹⁴ They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be vigorous and flourishing

⁴ Zain A light has shined in the darkness upon the upright: Cheth Gracious and merciful and righteous.

¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the light of the morning star, that shines more and more until the day is perfect.

⁸ ¶ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall gather thee. ⁹ Then shalt thou call, and thou shalt hear the LORD; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; ¹⁰ and if thou pour out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:

³ And we shall know and follow on in knowing the LORD; his going forth is prepared as the dawn; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

⁸ Do not rejoice against me, O my enemy; for if I have fallen, I shall arise; if I sit in darkness, the LORD is my light. ⁹ I will bear the indignation of the LORD because I have sinned against him, until he has judged my cause and executed my judgment; he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.

⁶ And it shall come to pass in that day that the light shall not be clear, nor dark; ⁷ but it shall be one day which is known to the LORD, not day, nor night; but it shall come to pass, that at evening time there shall be light.

² But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness be born, and in his wings he shall bring saving health; and ye shall go forth and jump like calves of the herd.

²⁶ And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he should see the Christ of the Lord. ²⁷ And he came by the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, ²⁸ then he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, ²⁹ Lord, now let thy slave depart in peace, according to thy word, ³⁰ for mine eyes have seen thy saving health, ³¹ which thou hast prepared before the face of all the peoples: ³² a light to be revealed unto the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel.

⁵ And your threshing shall last unto the vintage, and the vintage shall last unto the sowing time; and ye shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land safely. ⁶ For I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and no one shall make you afraid; and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

¹¹ What is my strength that I should hope? What is my end that I should prolong my life?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle and are spent without hope.

²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows. ²⁸ Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and the light shall shine upon thy ways. ²⁹ When others are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

⁵ I laid me down and slept; I awaked, for the LORD sustained me.

⁸ I will both lay me down in peace and sleep: for thou only, O LORD, dost make me to be confident.

⁵ Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? Wait for God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the saving health of my countenance and my God.

²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. ²⁵ Thou shall not be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked when it comes. ²⁶ For the LORD shall be thy confidence and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

³² ¶ For his wickedness shall the wicked be cast out, but the righteous in his death has hope.

³ And not only this, but we even glory in the tribulations, knowing that the tribulation works patience; ⁴ and patience, experience; and experience, hope; ⁵ and the hope shall not be ashamed, because the love of God is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us.

²⁷ to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery in the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory,

²⁶ ¶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar and Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol, the chief captain of his army. ²⁷ And Isaac said unto them, Why come ye to me, seeing ye hate me and have sent me away from you? ²⁸ And they said, We have seen certainly that the LORD is with thee; and we said, Let there be now an oath between us, even between us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee, ²⁹ that thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee and as we have done unto thee nothing but good and have sent thee away in peace; thou art now the blessed of the LORD. ³⁰ And he made them a banquet, and they ate and drank. ³¹ And they rose up early in the morning and swore one to another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

⁶ For I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and no one shall make you afraid; and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

⁸ Therefore, take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my slave Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my slave Job shall pray for you; for only because I will accept him, I shall not deal with you according to your folly, in that ye have not spoken by me in uprightness, like my slave Job. ⁹ So Eliphaz, the Temanite, and Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, went, and did according as the LORD commanded them; and the LORD accepted Job.

¹² And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat thy favour.

⁶ ¶ Many will intreat the favour of the prince, but every man is a friend to him that gives.

¹⁴ Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee; they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is no one else; there is none other beside God.

¹⁴ The sons also of those that afflicted thee shall come humbled unto thee; and at the steps of thy feet all those that despised thee shall bow themselves down; and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

⁹ Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but do lie; behold, I will constrain them to come and worship before thy feet and to know that I have loved thee.

¹⁶ I also will do this unto you: I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague that shall consume the eyes and torment the soul, and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

⁶⁵ Neither shalt thou find rest among these Gentiles, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest; but there the LORD shall give thee a trembling heart and failing of eyes and sorrow of soul;

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God, and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish. ¹⁴ For his hope shall be cut off, and his trust is a spider’s web.

⁵ He that speaks flattery to his neighbour, even the eyes of his sons shall fail.

¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and he shall be brought to the king of terrors.

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has stolen much, when God takes away his soul?

²² For God shall cast down on him and not spare; he would attempt to flee out of his hand.

¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

²² There is no darkness nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

³ I am weary of my crying; my throat is dried; my eyes fail while I wait for my God.

²⁴ ¶ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him, but God shall grant the desire of the righteous.

²⁰ ¶ Whosoever curses his father or his mother, his fire shall be put out in obscure darkness.

¹⁷ Ain As for us, our eyes have failed in seeking our vain help; in our watching we have watched for people that cannot save us.

¹⁴ Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver his soul:

¹⁹ As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall and a serpent bit him. ²⁰ Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

¹ ¶ I saw the Lord standing upon the altar, and he said, Smite the threshold and shake the doors and cut the head of them all into pieces; and I will slay the last of them with the sword; there shall be none of them left to flee away or to escape. ² Though they dig unto Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down; ³ and though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out of there; and though they hide from my sight in the bottom of the sea, from there will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:

²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime didst receive thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here, and thou art tormented. ²⁶ And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass from there to us.

³ how shall we escape, if we belittle such great saving health? Which, having begun to be published by the Lord, has been confirmed unto us by those that heard him,
