⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother?

² and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, three men stood by him; and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door and bowed himself toward the ground ³ and said, My Lord, if now I have found grace in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy slave. ⁴ Let a little water, I pray you, be brought and wash your feet and rest yourselves under a tree; ⁵ and I will bring a morsel of bread and comfort your hearts; after that ye shall pass on because for this ye are come to your slave. And they said, So do as thou hast said.

² and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your slave’s house and tarry all night and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early and go on your ways. And they said, No, but we will abide in the street all night.

¹⁴ And Lot went out and spoke unto his sons-in-law, those who were to marry his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons-in-law.

² Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, What would seem better unto you, that seventy persons reign over you, all the sons of Jerubbaal; or that one reign over you? Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

²⁰ And the old man said, Peace be with thee; let all thy needs be upon me; only do not pass the night in the plaza. ²¹ So he brought him into his house and gave fodder unto the asses, and they washed their feet, and ate and drank.

¹⁵ And the men which were expressed by name rose up and took the captives, and, with the spoil, clothed all that were naked among them and arrayed them and shod them and gave them to eat and to drink and anointed them and carried all the feeble of them upon asses and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren; then they returned to Samaria.

⁵ Yet now, given that the flesh of our brethren is as our flesh and their sons as our sons, behold, we subject our sons and our daughters to slavery, and there are some of our daughters in bondage already; neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

⁷ Thou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry.

¹⁸ (for from my youth the fatherless was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb) ¹⁹ if I have seen any perish for want of clothing or any needy without a covering; ²⁰ if his loins have not blessed me and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate;

⁹ Pe He has dispersed; he has given to the poor; Tzaddi his righteousness endures for ever; Koph his horn shall be exalted in glory.

⁹ ¶ He that has a merciful eye shall be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the destitute.

²¹ ¶ If thy enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,

²⁷ ¶ He that gives unto the poor shall never lack, but he that hides his eyes from the poor shall have many a curse.

¹ ¶ Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days. ² Give a portion to seven and even to eight, for thou dost not know what evil shall come upon the earth.

³ Take counsel; execute judgment; make thy shadow as the night in the midst of the noonday; hide the outcasts; do not betray him that escapes. ⁴ Let my outcasts dwell with thee, Moab; be thou a covert to them from the presence of the destroyer; for the extortioner shall come to an end, the destroyer shall cease, the oppressor shall be consumed out of the land.

¹⁰ and if thou pour out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:

⁷ neither oppress any, but restores to the debtor his pledge, does not commit robbery, gives his bread to the hungry, and covers the naked with a garment,

¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.

²⁶ He said unto him, What is written in the law? How readest thou? ²⁷ And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy understanding, and thy neighbour as thyself. ²⁸ And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right; do this, and thou shalt live. ²⁹ But he, desiring to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? ³⁰ And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment and wounded him and departed, leaving him half dead. ³¹ And it so happened that a certain priest came down that way; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. ³² And likewise a Levite, when he came near the place and looked on him, he passed by on the other side. ³³ But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was; and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion ³⁴ and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn and took care of him. ³⁵ And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two denarius and gave them to the host and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. ³⁶ Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

⁴¹ But rather give alms {lit. do acts of mercy} of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

⁸ Then Zacchaeus stood and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

¹⁵ And when she was baptized, with her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide there. And she constrained us.

³⁴ And when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

²⁰ Therefore, if thine enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

⁶ ¶ But this I say, He who sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly, and he who sows in blessings shall also reap blessings. ⁷ Each one according as they purpose in their heart, so let them give, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. ⁸ And God is able to make all grace abound in you that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: ⁹ As it is written, He has dispersed abroad; he has given to the poor; his righteousness remains for ever. ¹⁰ Now he that supplies seed to the sower shall also supply bread for food and shall multiply your seed sown and shall increase the growing of the fruits of your righteousness,

¹⁰ having a good testimony of good works, if she has brought up well her children, if she has exercised hospitality, if she has washed the feet of the saints, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.

⁷ For we have great joy and consolation in thy charity because the bowels of the saints have been refreshed by thee, brother.

² Do not forget to show hospitality; for thereby some, having entertained angels, were kept. ³ Remember those that are in bonds as bound with them and those who suffer adversity as being yourselves also in the body.

¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you says unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; but ye do not give them those things which are needful for the body; what shall it profit them?

¹⁷ But whosoever has this world’s goods and sees his brother have need and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how does the charity of God abide in him? ¹⁸ My little children, let us not love in word neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
