⁶ And as the LORD passed by before him, he proclaimed, I AM, I AM strong, merciful, and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in mercy and truth,

¹³ And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the sons of Israel and say unto them, The God of your fathers has sent me unto you, and if they say to me, What is his name? What shall I say unto them? ¹⁴ And God answered unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM. And he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the sons of Israel: I AM (YHWH) has sent me unto you. ¹⁵ And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the sons of Israel: The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me unto you. This is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all ages. ¹⁶ ¶ Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you and seen that which is done to you in Egypt,

²⁷ for only that is his covering, it is his clothing to cover his flesh, in which he must sleep; and it shall come to pass, when he cries unto me, that I will hear, for I am merciful.

²⁰ He further said, Thou canst not see my face; for no man shall see me and live. ²¹ And the LORD continued saying, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon the rock; ²² and it shall come to pass while my glory passes by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock and will cover thee with my hand until I have passed by. ²³ Then I will take away my hand, and thou shalt see my back parts, but my face {Heb. faces} shall not be seen.

¹⁷ And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying, ¹⁸ The LORD is longsuffering and of great mercy, letting go of iniquity and transgression and absolving, but by no means absolving the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons unto the third and fourth generations. ¹⁹ Pardon now the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of thy mercy and as thou hast forgiven this people from Egypt even until now.

¹⁰ and showing mercy unto thousands, to those that love me and keep my commandments.

¹¹ And he said, Go forth and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

⁹ For if ye return unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find mercy before those that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land, for the LORD your God is gracious and merciful and will not turn away his face from you if ye return unto him.

¹⁷ and refused to hear; neither did they remember thy wonders that thou hadst done among them, but hardened their necks and in their rebellion thought to appoint a leader to return to their bondage; but thou art a God of pardons, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great mercy, for thou didst not leave them.

¹⁹ ¶ Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for those that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for those that wait in thee before the sons of men!

¹⁰ For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.

⁵ For thou, Lord, art good and ready to forgive and plenteous in mercy unto all those that call upon thee.

¹⁵ But thou, O Lord, art a merciful and gracious God, longsuffering and plenteous in mercy and truth.

⁴ He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings thou shalt be secure: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

⁸ The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. ⁹ He will not always chide, neither will he keep his anger for ever. ¹⁰ He has not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. ¹¹ For as the heavens are high above the earth so does he increase his mercy over those that fear him. ¹² As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our rebellions from us. ¹³ Like as a father has mercy upon his children, so the LORD has mercy upon those that fear him.

⁴ For thy mercy is great above the heavens, and thy truth reaches unto the heavens.

⁴ Zain He has made his wonderful works to be remembered; Cheth The LORD is gracious and merciful.

⁸ Samech They stand fast from age to age Ain and are made in truth and uprightness.

⁴ Zain A light has shined in the darkness upon the upright: Cheth Gracious and merciful and righteous.

⁵ Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.

² I will worship the temple of thy holiness and praise thy name above thy mercy and thy truth; for thou hast made thy name to be magnificent and raised up thy spoken word above all things.

⁸ Cheth The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and of great mercy.

⁶ who made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is therein; who keeps truth for ever:

⁴ ¶ And in that day ye shall say, Sing unto the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the peoples, remember how his name is exalted.

²³ Chet They are new every morning; great is thy faith.

¹³ and rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and great in mercy, and he does repent of chastisement.

² And he prayed unto the LORD and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was this not what I said when I was yet in my country? Therefore I hastened to flee unto Tarshish, for I knew that thou art a gracious God and full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy, and dost repent when thou art come to take punishment.

¹⁸ Who is a God like unto thee that pardons iniquity, and passes over the rebellion with the remnant of his heritage? He did not retain his anger for ever because he delights in mercy.

²⁰ Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the times of old.

¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses, but the grace and the truth of God came through Jesus, the Christ.

⁴ Or dost thou despise the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering, ignoring that the goodness of God leads thee to repentance?

²⁰ Moreover the law entered that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound, ²¹ so that in the same manner as sin has reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus, the Christ, our Lord.

⁷ in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace, ⁸ which has over abounded in us in all wisdom and prudence;
