³⁹ And I will afflict the seed of David because of this, but not for ever.

³⁶ And unto his son I will give one tribe, that David my slave may have a lamp always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name in her.

¹⁶ ¶ So when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? There is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

⁸ and rent the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it thee, and yet thou hast not been as my slave David, who kept my commandments and who followed me with all his heart, to doing only that which was right in my eyes,

²⁵ And it came to pass in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. ²⁶ And he took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king’s house; he took it all away, and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

³⁰ If his sons forsake my law and do not walk in my judgments, ³¹ if they profane my statutes and do not keep my commandments, ³² then I will visit their rebellion with the rod and their iniquity with stripes. ³³ Nevertheless I will not take my mercy from him, neither will I falsify my truth. ³⁴ I will not profane my covenant, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

³⁸ ¶ But thou hast cast off and abhorred thine anointed; thou hast been wroth with him. ³⁹ Thou hast made void the covenant of thy slave; thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. ⁴⁰ Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin. ⁴¹ All that pass by the way spoil him; he is a reproach to his neighbours. ⁴² Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice. ⁴³ Thou hast also blunted the edge of his sword and hast not made him to stand in the battle. ⁴⁴ Thou hast made his clarity to cease and cast his throne down to the ground. ⁴⁵ The days of his youth hast thou shortened; thou hast covered him with shame. ⁴⁹ Lord, where are thy former mercies, which thou didst sware unto David in thy truth? ⁵⁰ Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy slaves; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of many peoples, ⁵¹ because thine enemies have dishonoured, O LORD; they have dishonoured the footsteps of thine anointed.

¹⁴ Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel.

⁷ The multitude of his dominion and the peace shall have no end upon the throne of David and upon his Kingdom, ordering it and confirming it in judgment and in righteousness from now on even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of the hosts will perform this.

¹ ¶ And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: ² And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD, ³ and shall make him of quick olfaction in the fear of the LORD; and he shall not judge according to the sight of his eyes, neither reprove according to the hearing of his ears: ⁴ But with righteousness shall he judge the poor and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the spirit of his lips he shall slay the wicked. ⁵ And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faith the girdle of his kidneys. ⁶ The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a child shall shepherd them. ⁷ The cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. ⁸ And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den. ⁹ They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. ¹⁰ ¶ And it shall be in that day that the Root of Jesse, who shall be lifted up as a banner, as an example to the Gentiles shall be sought by the Gentiles; and his Kingdom of peace shall be glorious.

⁵ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper and shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. ⁶ In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this shall be his name by which they shall call him, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

³¹ Caph For the Lord will not cast off for ever: ³² Caph But though he causes grief, yet he will also have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

³² He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David; ³³ and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

⁴ And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judaea unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and family of David)

¹¹ For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.
