¹ ¶ Then all Israel gathered themselves to David in Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. ² And moreover yesterday and the day before yesterday, when Saul was king, it was thou that led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD thy God hath said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel. ³ Therefore, all the elders of Israel came to the king in Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Samuel. ⁴ Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus, for there the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of that land. ⁵ And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not enter here. Nevertheless, David took the fortress of Zion, which is the city of David. ⁶ And David said, Whoever smites the Jebusites first shall be head and prince. So Joab, the son of Zeruiah, went up first and was made the head. ⁷ And David dwelt in the fortress; therefore, they called it the city of David. ⁸ And he built the city round about, even from Millo round about, and Joab restored the rest of the city. ⁹ So David waxed greater and greater, for the LORD of the hosts was with him. ¹⁰ ¶ These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened him in his kingdom, with all Israel, to make him king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD. ¹¹ And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, of Hachmoni, the chief of the captains; he lifted up his spear against three hundred slain at one time and killed them. ¹² And after him was Eleazar, the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighties. ¹³ He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where there was an inheritance of land full of barley; and as the people fled from before the Philistines, ¹⁴ they set themselves in the midst of that portion and delivered it and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great salvation. ¹⁵ Now three of the thirty principal ones went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the camp of the Philistines was pitched in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁶ And David was then in the fortress, and the Philistines’ garrison was then at Bethlehem. ¹⁷ And David longed and said, Oh, that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate! ¹⁸ And those three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David; but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD, ¹⁹ and said, May God keep me from doing this thing. Shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? For with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore, he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest. ²⁰ And Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of three, who had lifted up his spear against three hundred, whom he slew and had a name among the three. ²¹ Of the three, he obtained the most honour in this second group of three, for he was their prince; however, he did not attain to the first three. ²² Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of great acts, of Kabzeel; he slew two lions of Moab; he also went down and slew a lion in the middle of a pit on a snowy day. ²³ And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and slew him with his own spear. ²⁴ These things did Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties. ²⁵ He was the most honoured among the thirty, but did not attain to the first three. ¹⁴ And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.

²² And they ascended by the Negev and came unto Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the sons of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

¹⁵ Thou shalt surely appoint as king over thee the one whom the LORD thy God shall choose; one from among thy brethren shalt thou set as king over thee; thou may not set a stranger over thee, who is not thy brother.

² Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, What would seem better unto you, that seventy persons reign over you, all the sons of Jerubbaal; or that one reign over you? Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass after this that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Where shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.

¹ ¶ Then all the tribes of Israel came unto David in Hebron and spoke, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. ² And even yesterday and the day before yesterday, when Saul was king over us, it was thou that didst lead out and bring in Israel; and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over Israel. ³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king in Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel. ⁴ David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. ⁵ In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah. ⁶ ¶ Then the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, who dwelt in the land, who spoke unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in here, thinking, David cannot come in here. ⁷ Nevertheless, David took the fortress of Zion; the same is the city of David. ⁸ And David said on that day, Who shall go up the waterspout and smite the Jebusites and the lame and the blind, that are hated of David’s soul? Therefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. ⁹ So David dwelt in the fortress and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. ¹⁰ And David went on and grew great, and the LORD God of the hosts was with him. ¹¹ ¶ And Hiram, king of Tyre, also sent messengers to David, and cedar trees and carpenters and masons, and they built David a house. ¹² And David understood that the LORD had confirmed him as king over Israel and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel’s sake. ¹³ And David took more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem after he had come from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born unto David. ¹⁴ And these were the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, ¹⁵ Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, ¹⁶ Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphalet.

¹⁰ But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the shofar, then ye shall say, Absalom reigns in Hebron.

¹² Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh; why then are ye the last to bring back the king? ¹³ Likewise say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone and of my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the place of Joab.

²³ ¶ And this is the number of the heads of those that were ready armed for war and came to David in Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD. ²⁴ Of the sons of Judah that bore shield and spear, six thousand eight hundred, ready armed for war. ²⁵ Of the sons of Simeon, mighty men of valour for the war, seven thousand one hundred. ²⁶ Of the sons of Levi four thousand six hundred. ²⁷ Likewise Jehoiada, prince of those of the lineage of Aaron, and with him three thousand seven hundred; ²⁸ and Zadok, a young man mighty of valour, and of his father’s house twenty-two captains. ²⁹ Of the sons of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand; for in that time many of them had the charge of the house of Saul. ³⁰ And of the sons of Ephraim twenty thousand eight hundred, mighty men of valour, famous throughout the houses of their fathers. ³¹ And of the half tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, who were designated by name, to come and make David king. ³² And of the sons of Issachar, two hundred chief men, who had understanding of the times and were wise to know what Israel ought to do; and all their brethren followed their word. ³³ Of Zebulun, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all weapons of war, fifty thousand, who could keep rank; they were not of double heart. ³⁴ And of Naphtali a thousand captains and with them with shield and spear thirty-seven thousand. ³⁵ And of those of Dan expert in war twenty-eight thousand six hundred. ³⁶ And of Asher, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand. ³⁷ And of the other side of the Jordan, of those of Reuben and those of Gad and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, one hundred and twenty thousand. ³⁸ All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel; and likewise, all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king. ³⁹ And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking, for their brethren had prepared for them. ⁴⁰ And likewise, those that were near them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses and on camels and on mules and on oxen, and food, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly; for there was joy in Israel.

³⁰ For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

¹⁷ who may go out before them, and who may go in before them, and who may lead them out and who may bring them in that the congregation of the LORD not be as sheep without a shepherd.

¹ ¶ And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill thy horn with oil and go; I will send thee to Jesse of Bethlehem for I have provided me a king among his sons.

¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him from among his brethren; and the Spirit of the LORD prospered David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

¹³ Therefore, Saul removed him from him and made him captain over a thousand, and he went out and came in before the people.

² And even yesterday and the day before yesterday, when Saul was king over us, it was thou that didst lead out and bring in Israel; and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over Israel.

⁷ In all the places in which I have walked with all the sons of Israel did I speak a word in any of the tribes of Israel, unto whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why did ye not build me a house of cedar?

⁹ Give, therefore, thy slave a hearing heart to judge thy people that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this thy so great a people?

⁷ ¶ Go, tell Jeroboam, Thus hath the LORD God of Israel said, Forasmuch as I exalted thee from among the people and made thee prince over my people Israel,

⁷¹ from following the ewes great with young, he brought him to feed Jacob his people and Israel his inheritance.

¹¹ He shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather the lambs with his arm and carry them in his bosom and shall gently lead those that are with young.

⁴ Behold, I have given him for a witness to the peoples, a captain and teacher to the peoples.

¹⁵ And I will give you pastors according to my heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

² But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be Lord in Israel; and his goings forth are from the beginning, from the days of the ages.

⁴ And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide; for now he shall be great unto the ends of the earth.

⁶ And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda, for out of thee shall come a Leader that shall shepherd my people Israel.

⁴ And when he puts forth his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

¹¹ Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and prince over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

¹⁵ And all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal, and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

²⁸ And Samuel said unto him, The LORD has rent the kingdom of Israel from thee today and has given it to a neighbour of thine that is better than thou.

³ And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do, and thou shalt anoint unto me the one whom I name unto thee.

¹² And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and of a beautiful countenance and handsome. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he. ¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him from among his brethren; and the Spirit of the LORD prospered David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

¹⁸ And the two made a covenant before the LORD, and David abode in the woods, and Jonathan returned to his house.

¹⁷ The LORD, therefore, has done as he spoke by me! For the LORD has rent the kingdom out of thy hand and given it to thy neighbour, even to David.

⁴ And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, The men of Jabeshgilead buried Saul.

³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king in Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel.

¹⁷ ¶ Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the LORD’s people; and likewise between the king and the people.

³⁰ And his slaves carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo and brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his own sepulchre. Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah, and anointed him and made him king in his father’s stead.

³ And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king’s son who shall reign, as the LORD has said of the sons of David.

¹⁶ and Jebusite and Amorite and Girgasite

²¹ and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite.

¹⁷ and I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite unto a land flowing with milk and honey.

⁸ and this border goes up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the side of the Jebusite towards the Negev; this is Jerusalem. Then this border goes up to the top of the mountain that is before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward;

⁶³ As for the Jebusites who inhabit Jerusalem, the sons of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusite remains in Jerusalem with the sons of Judah unto this day.

²⁸ Zelah, Eleph, Jebusi, which is Jerusalem, Gibeath and Kirjath: fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the sons of Benjamin according to their families.

²¹ ¶ And the sons of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; thus the Jebusites dwell with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

¹⁰ But the man would not remain there that night, but he rose up and departed and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem, with his two asses saddled and with his concubine. ¹¹ And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come now and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites and lodge in it. ¹² And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside here into a city of strangers that is not of the sons of Israel; we will go on to Gibeah.

⁹ If he is able to fight with me and to overcome me, then will we be your slaves, but if I prevail against him and overcome him, then ye shall be our slaves and serve us. ¹⁰ And the Philistine said, I have dishonoured the ranks of Israel today; give me a man that we may fight together.

²⁶ Then David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that overcomes this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should dishonour the armies of the living God?

³⁶ Whether it was a lion or a bear thy slave would kill it, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has dishonoured the armies of the living God.

⁹ So David dwelt in the fortress and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.

¹⁰ So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David, but David carried it aside into the house of Obededom, the Gittite.

¹² ¶ And it was told King David, saying, The LORD has blessed the house of Obededom and all that pertains unto him because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness.

¹ ¶ Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the princes of the families of the sons of Israel, unto King Solomon in Jerusalem that they might bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion.

⁷ And David dwelt in the fortress; therefore, they called it the city of David.

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah, the Mount Zion which he loved.

⁵ For there are set thrones of the judgment, the thrones of the house of David.

¹ A Song of degrees. ¶ Those that trust in the LORD are as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed but abides for ever. ² As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from now on even for ever.

¹³ For the LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired her for his habitation.

²⁵ And each one of the men of Israel were saying, Have ye seen this man that is come up? He is come up to dishonour Israel. It shall be that the king will enrich the man who overcomes him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.

¹⁸ ¶ And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab and Abishai and Asahel, and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.

²⁷ And when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly and smote him there under the fifth rib that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

¹⁶ And Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was over the host, and Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was the writer of chronicles;

²³ ¶ So Joab remained over all the host of Israel, and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites;

⁷ Nevertheless, David took the fortress of Zion; the same is the city of David.

⁶ And all the men of Shechem gathered together with all the house of Millo {Heb. the congregation} and went and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

²⁰ But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the men of Shechem and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem and from the house of Millo and devour Abimelech.

¹⁵ ¶ And this is the account of the levy which King Solomon raised to build the house of the LORD and his own house and Millo and the wall of Jerusalem and Hazor and Megiddo and Gezer.

²⁷ And this was why he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon in building Millo, closed the breach of the city of David, his father.

²⁰ And his slaves arose and made a conspiracy and slew Joash in the house of Millo, as he was going down to Silla.

² And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria and said, What are these feeble Jews doing? Is this to be permitted them? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish on time? Will they resurrect the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which were burned?

¹ ¶ Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David, but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.

¹⁰ And David went on and grew great, and the LORD God of the hosts was with him.

²⁰ And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, was the captain over them in time past, and the LORD was with him.

⁴ For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces, for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.

⁹ The righteous shall hold on to his way, and he that has clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.

⁷ The LORD of the hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

⁹ ¶ Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries, prepare yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. ¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us.

⁷ The multitude of his dominion and the peace shall have no end upon the throne of David and upon his Kingdom, ordering it and confirming it in judgment and in righteousness from now on even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of the hosts will perform this.

¹⁰ ¶ Do not fear for I am with thee; do not be dismayed, for I am thy God, who strengthens thee; I will help thee always; I will always uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

¹⁴ Fear not, thou worm Jacob, ye dead of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

³¹ ¶ What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who shall be against us?

So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah. ¹⁴ ¶ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

¹⁷ And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you; ¹⁸ now then do it, for the LORD has spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my slave David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines and out of the hand of all their enemies.

²¹ And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king that they may make a covenant with thee and that thou may reign over all that thy heart desires. And David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.

⁸ ¶ These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: he that sat in the seat of wisdom, chief among the three: Adino, the Eznite, who on one occasion slew eight hundred enemies. ⁹ And after him was Eleazar, the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men who were with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and those of Israel were gone away. ¹⁰ He arose and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword; and the LORD wrought a great salvation that day, and the people returned after him only to spoil. ¹¹ And after him was Shammah, the son of Agee, the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a community, where was an inheritance of land full of lentils, and the people had fled before the Philistines. ¹² But he stood in the midst of the inheritance and defended it and slew the Philistines, and the LORD wrought a great salvation. ¹³ These three, who were of the thirty chief, went down and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam, and the camp of the Philistines was pitched in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁴ And David was then in the fortress, and the garrison of the Philistines was in Bethlehem. ¹⁵ And David longed and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! ¹⁶ Then these three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David; nevertheless, he would not drink of it, but poured it out unto the LORD, saying, ¹⁷ Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this; is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? And he would not drink it. These three mighty men did this. ¹⁸ And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them and had a name among the three. ¹⁹ He was the most honourable of the three and captain among them; however, he did not attain unto the first three. ²⁰ Then, Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, slew two lions of Moab; he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow. ²¹ He also slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, but he went down to him with a staff and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and slew him with his own spear. ²² These things did Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, and had a name among the three mighty men. ²³ He had more honour than the thirty, but he did not attain to the first three. And David put him in his council. ²⁴ Asahel, the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan, the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, ²⁵ Shammah of Harodi, Elika of Harodi, ²⁶ Helez of Palti, Ira, the son of Ikkesh of Tekoah, ²⁷ Abiezer of Anethoth, Mebunnai of Hushath, ²⁸ Zalmon of Ahoh, Maharai of Netophath, ²⁹ Heleb, the son of Baanah of Netophath, Ittai, the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the sons of Benjamin, ³⁰ Benaiah, the Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash, ³¹ Abialbon of Arbath, Azmaveth of Barhum, ³² Eliahba of Shaalbon, Jonathan of the sons of Jashen, ³³ Shammah of Harar, Ahiam, the son of Sharar of Harar, ³⁴ Eliphelet, the son of Ahasbai, the son of Maachath, Eliam, the son of Ahithophel of Gilon, ³⁵ Hezrai of Carmel, Paarai of Arbi, ³⁶ Igal, the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani of Gadi, ³⁷ Zelek of Ammon, Naharai of Beeroth, armourbearer to Joab, the son of Zeruiah, ³⁸ Ira of Ithri, Gareb of Ithri, ³⁹ Uriah, the Hittite: thirty-seven in all.

³ Therefore, all the elders of Israel came to the king in Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Samuel.

³⁸ All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel; and likewise, all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.

² Over the first course for the first month was Jashobeam, the son of Zabdiel, and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

⁹ And after him was Eleazar, the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men who were with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and those of Israel were gone away.

⁴ Abishua, Naaman, Ahoah,

¹⁹ and said, May God keep me from doing this thing. Shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? For with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore, he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.

²¹ Of the three, he obtained the most honour in this second group of three, for he was their prince; however, he did not attain to the first three.

⁴ And over the course of the second month was Dodai, an Ahohite, and in his course was prince Mikloth; in his course likewise were twenty-four thousand.

¹ ¶ Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongs to Judah, and pitched camp between Shochoh and Azekah in Ephesdammim.

¹¹ And after him was Shammah, the son of Agee, the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a community, where was an inheritance of land full of lentils, and the people had fled before the Philistines. ¹² But he stood in the midst of the inheritance and defended it and slew the Philistines, and the LORD wrought a great salvation.

²³ So the LORD saved Israel that day; and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.

⁵ for he put his soul in his hand and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel. Thou didst see it and rejoice. Why then wilt thou sin against innocent blood to slay David without a cause?

¹⁰ He arose and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword; and the LORD wrought a great salvation that day, and the people returned after him only to spoil.

¹ ¶ Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and in high esteem because by him the LORD had given salvation unto Syria; he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper.

⁵⁰ He gives great deliverance to his king and shows mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.

¹⁰ Thou, he who gives salvation unto kings, who redeems David his slave from the evil sword.

³¹ The horse is prepared against the day of battle, but salvation is of the LORD.

¹⁵ the king of Libnah, another; the king of Adullam, another;

¹ ¶ And David departed from there and escaped to the cave Adullam; {Heb. righteousness or justice of the people}; and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him.

¹⁸ The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. {Heb. of the giants}

²² And the Philistines came up yet again and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

⁹ And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

⁵ And it shall be as when the harvestman gathers the sheaves and reaps the grain with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathers grain in the valley of Rephaim.

¹⁵ Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah; the glory of Israel shall come unto Adullam.

⁵ After that thou shalt come to the hill of God where the garrison of the Philistines is, and it shall come to pass when thou art come there to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery and a tambourine and a pipe and a harp before them; and they shall prophesy.

⁴ And all Israel heard it said that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines and also that Israel had become a stench unto the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

²³ And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.

²⁵ Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David, and he came down from there into a rock and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.

A Prayer when he was in the cave. ¶ I shall cry unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice shall I ask the LORD for mercy.

⁴ ¶ And the vulgar who were mixed in among them returned to their lust; and even the sons of Israel wept and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? ⁵ We remember the fish, which we freely ate in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic,

¹⁵ And David longed and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! ¹⁶ Then these three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David; nevertheless, he would not drink of it, but poured it out unto the LORD, saying,

for the sons of Korah. ¶ As the hart pants after the water brooks, so does my soul pant after thee, O God. ² My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God?

¹ A Psalm of David,
when he was in the wilderness of Judah. ¶ O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee; my soul thirsts for thee; my flesh longs for thee in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water;

⁶ I stretched forth my hands unto thee; my soul thirsted after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.

³ Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of saving health.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

¹⁴ but whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life.

⁶ And they gathered together in Mizpeh and drew water and poured it out before the LORD and fasted on that day and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the sons of Israel in Mizpeh.

⁶ Set me as a seal upon thine heart as a sign upon thine arm; for love is strong as death; jealousy is hard as Sheol; the coals thereof are coals of fire, which have a most vehement flame.

²⁴ But none of these things move me, neither do I count my life dear unto myself, only that I might finish my course with joy and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

¹³ Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

¹⁴ For the charity of the Christ constrains us because we judge thus: that if one died for all, then all are dead: ¹⁵ And that he died for all that those who live should not live from now on unto themselves, but unto him who died and rose again for them.

¹⁰ ¶ And any man of the house of Israel or of the strangers that sojourn among you that eats any blood at all, I will set my face against that person that eats blood and will cut them off from among his people.

¹⁸ Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field.

¹⁷ (For my father fought for you and cast his life far from him to deliver you out of the hand of Midian;

¹⁷ Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this; is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? And he would not drink it. These three mighty men did this.

³ And Naboth replied unto Ahab, The LORD keep me from giving thee the inheritance of my fathers.

³¹ when the servants of my tent said, Oh that we had of his flesh! We would never be satisfied.

¹⁴ He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence, and precious shall their blood be in his sight.

²⁴ And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

⁵⁵ For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

¹ ¶ What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? ² No, in no wise. How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein?

⁴ (who have for my life laid down their own necks; unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} of the Gentiles);

³⁰ And why do we stand in jeopardy every hour?

⁶ ¶ Then David spoke and said to Ahimelech, the Hittite, and to Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee.

³⁰ So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

² And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab and another third under the hand of Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and the other third under the hand of Ittai, the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

⁶ And David said to Abishai, Now Sheba, the son of Bichri, shall do us more harm than Absalom; take thou thy lord’s slaves and pursue after him lest he find fenced cities and escape us.

¹⁷ But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, helped David, and smote the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore unto him, saying, From now on thou shalt not go out with us to battle that thou not quench the light of Israel.

¹⁶ whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah were three: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel.

⁸ But some fell into good ground and brought forth fruit: one a hundredfold and another sixtyfold and another thirtyfold.

⁴¹ One thing is the glory of the sun, and another the glory of the moon, and another the glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory.

²¹ And these were the cities in the border of the tribe of the sons of Judah towards the border of Edom towards the Negev: Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur,

⁵ Then Samson went down with his father and his mother to Timnath, and when they came to the vineyards of Timnath, behold, a young lion came roaring against him. ⁶ And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand, but he did not make known unto his father or his mother what he had done.

³⁴ And David replied unto Saul, Thy slave was the pastor of his father’s sheep, and if a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, ³⁵ I went out after him and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth; and if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and smote him and slew him. ³⁶ Whether it was a lion or a bear thy slave would kill it, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has dishonoured the armies of the living God.

²³ Saul and Jonathan were loved and desired in their lives, and in their death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

¹⁸ and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were priests.

⁸ But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan, the prophet, and Shimei and Rei and the mighty men of David did not follow Adonijah.

³⁸ So Zadok, the priest, and Nathan, the prophet, and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and caused Solomon to ride upon King David’s mule and brought him to Gihon.

³⁰ And Benaiah entered into the tabernacle of the LORD and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, No, but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.

³⁴ So Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, went up and fell upon him and slew him, and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness. ³⁵ ¶ And the king put Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, in his place over the host; and Zadok, the priest, the king put in the place of Abiathar.

⁸ And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David in the fortress in the wilderness, men of might of war fit for the battle, put in order with shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;

⁵ The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, a chief priest: and in his course were twenty-four thousand. ⁶ This is that Benaiah, who was mighty among the thirty, and above the thirty; and in his course was Ammizabad, his son.

¹¹ For only Og, king of Bashan, had remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the sons of Ammon? Nine cubits was the length thereof and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

⁴ And a man named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span, came out of the camp of the Philistines and stood between the two camps.

⁷ And the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron, and one bearing a shield went before him.

⁵¹ Therefore David ran and stood upon the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and slew him and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw their giant was dead, they fled.

⁵ And there was war again with the Philistines, and Elhanan, the son of Jair, slew Lahmi, the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver’s beam.

¹⁸ ¶ And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab and Abishai and Asahel, and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. ¹⁹ And Asahel pursued after Abner, and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. ²⁰ Then Abner looked behind him and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, Yes. ²¹ Then Abner said to him, Turn aside to thy right hand or to thy left and lay hold on one of the young men and take his spoil. But Asahel would not turn aside from following after him. ²² And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn aside from following me; why should I smite thee to the ground? How then should I hold up my face to Joab, thy brother? ²³ Howbeit he refused to turn aside; therefore, Abner with the butt end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib that the spear came out behind him, and he fell down there and died in the same place. And it came to pass that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died, stood still.

¹⁹ And there was another war in Gob with the Philistines where Elhanan, the son of Jaareoregim of Bethlehem, slew Goliath, the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

²⁴ Asahel, the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan, the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,

⁶ ¶ Then David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. ⁷ And when Uriah had come unto him, David asked him how Joab was and how the people were and how the war prospered. ⁸ And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and royal food was sent unto him. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the slaves of his lord and did not go down to his house. ¹⁰ And when they had told David, saying, Uriah did not go down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Didst thou not come from thy journey? Why then didst thou not go down to thy house? ¹¹ And Uriah said unto David, The ark and Israel and Judah abide in tents, and my lord Joab and the slaves of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By thy life and by the life of thy soul, I will not do this thing. ¹² And David said to Uriah, Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day and the next day. ¹³ And when David had called him, he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his bed with the slaves of his lord but did not go down to his house. ¹⁴ ¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retire from him, that he may be smitten and die. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that the most valiant men were. ¹⁷ And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the people of the slaves of David fell, and Uriah the Hittite died also. ¹⁸ Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war ¹⁹ and charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast finished telling the matters of the war unto the king, ²⁰ and if the king begins to be angry and he should say unto thee, Why did you approach so near unto the city when ye fought? Did ye not know that which they can throw down from the wall? ²¹ Who smote Abimelech, the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? Why did you go near the wall? Then thou shalt say, Thy slave Uriah, the Hittite, is dead also. ²² So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him for. ²³ And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us and came out unto us into the field, and we made them retreat unto the entering of the gate. ²⁴ And the archers shot from off the wall upon thy slaves, and some of the king’s slaves are dead, and thy slave Uriah, the Hittite, is dead also. ²⁵ Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devours one as well as another; strengthen the battle against the city until it is overthrown and encourage thou him. ²⁶ And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah, her husband, was dead, she mourned for her husband. ²⁷ And when the mourning was past, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and gave birth to a son unto him. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.

³⁶ And Attai begat Nathan, and Nathan begat Zabad,
