⁴¹ And they turned back and tempted God: and grieved the holy one of Israel.

⁴ And they said one to another: Let us appoint a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

²² But yet all the men that have seen my majesty, and the signs that I have done in Egypt, and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now ten times, and have not obeyed my voice,

¹⁶ Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God, as thou temptedst him in the place of temptation.

²² Whom hast thou reproached, and whom hast thou blasphemed? against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thy eyes on high? against the holy one of Israel.

¹⁹ And they spoke ill of God: they said: Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? ²⁰ Because he struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can he also give bread, or provide a table for his people?

³⁵ While he was yet speaking, some come from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying: Thy daughter is dead: why dost thou trouble the master any further? ³⁶ But Jesus having heard the word that was spoken, saith to the ruler of the synagogue: Fear not, only believe.

³⁹ Whom our fathers would not obey: but thrust him away and in their hearts turned back into Egypt,

⁸ Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the desert, ⁹ Where your fathers tempted me, proved and saw my works, ¹⁰ Forty years: for which cause I was offended with this generation, and I said: They always err in heart. And they have not known my ways. ¹¹ As I have sworn in my wrath: If they shall enter into my rest.

²¹ For it had been better for them not to have known the way of justice than, after they have known it, to turn back from that holy commandment which was delivered to them. ²² For, that of the true proverb has happened to them: The dog is returned to his vomit; and: The sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
