³¹ And behold it was all filled with nettles, and thorns had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall was broken down.

¹⁷ And to Adam he said: Because thou hast hearkened to the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee, that thou shouldst not eat, cursed is the earth in thy work: with labour and toil shalt thou eat thereof all the days of thy life. ¹⁸ Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to thee, and thou shalt eat the herbs of the earth. ¹⁹ In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread till thou return to the earth out of which thou wast taken: for dust thou art, and into dust thou shalt return.

⁴⁰ Let thistles grow up to me instead of wheat, and thorns instead of barley.

²³ The fear of the Lord is unto life: and he shall abide in the fulness without being visited with evil.

⁴ Because of the cold the sluggard would not plough: he shall beg therefore in the summer, and it shall not be given him.

¹³ The slothful man saith: There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the midst of the streets.

²¹ Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together, shall be consumed: and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags.

¹⁸ By slothfulness a building shall be brought down, and through the weakness of hands, the house shall drop through.

⁵ And now I will shew you what I will do to my vineyard. I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be wasted: I will break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down.

³ For thus saith the Lord to the men of Juda and Jerusalem: Break up anew your fallow ground, and sow not upon thorns:

⁷ And others fell among thorns: and the thorns grew up and choked them.

²² And he that received the seed among thorns, is he that heareth the word, and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choketh up the word, and he becometh fruitless.

⁸ But that which bringeth forth thorns and briers is reprobate and very near unto a curse: whose end is to be burnt.
