¹¹ And into whatsoever city or town you shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and there abide till you go thence.

¹ And the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of the city. And seeing them, he rose up and went to meet them: and worshipped prostrate to the ground. ² And said: I beseech you, my lords, turn in to the house of your servant, and lodge there: wash your feet, and in the morning you shall go on your way. And they said: No, but we will abide in the street. ³ He pressed them very much to turn in unto him: and when they were come into his house, he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate:

¹⁶ And behold they saw an old man, returning out of the field and from his work in the evening, and he also was of mount Ephraim, and dwelt as a stranger in Gabaa; but the men of that country were the children of Jemini. ¹⁷ And the old man lifting up his eyes, saw the man sitting with his bundles in the street of the city, and said to him: Whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? ¹⁸ He answered him: We came out from Bethlehem Juda, and we are going to our home, which is on the side of mount Ephraim, from whence we went to Bethlehem: and now we go to the house of God, and none will receive us under his roof: ¹⁹ We have straw and hay for provender of the asses, and bread and wine for the use of myself and of thy handmaid, and of the servant that is with me: we want nothing but lodging. ²⁰ And the old man answered him: Peace be with thee: I will furnish all things that are necessary: only I beseech thee, stay not in the street. ²¹ And he brought him into his house, and gave provender to his asses: and after they had washed their feet, he entertained them with a feast.

⁹ Arise, and go to Sarephta of the Sidonians, and dwell there: for I have commanded a widow woman there to feed thee. ¹⁰ He arose, and went to Sarephta. And when he was come to the gate of the city, he saw the widow woman gathering sticks, and he called her, and said to her: Give me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. ¹¹ And when she was going to fetch it, he called after her, saying: Bring me also, I beseech thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand. ¹² And she answered: As the Lord thy God liveth, I have no bread, but only a handful of meal in a pot, and a little oil in a cruise: behold I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it, for me and my son, that we may eat it and die. ¹³ And Elias said to her: Fear not; but go, and do as thou hast said but first make for me of the same meal a little hearth cake, and bring it to me, and after make for thyself and thy son. ¹⁴ For thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: The pot of meal shall not waste, nor the cruise of oil be diminished, until the day wherein the Lord will give rain upon the face of the earth. ¹⁵ She went, and did according to the word of Elias: and he ate, and she, and her house: and from that day ¹⁶ The pot of meal wasted not, and the cruise of oil was not diminished according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke in the hand of Elias. ¹⁷ And it came to pass after this, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick, and the sickness was very grievous, so that there was no breath left in him. ¹⁸ And she said to Elias: What have I to do with thee, thou man of God? art thou come to me, that my iniquities should be remembered, and that thou shouldst kill my son? ¹⁹ And Elias said to her: Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him into the upper chamber where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. ²⁰ And he cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord, my God, hast thou afflicted also the widow, with whom I am after a sort maintained, so as to kill her son? ²¹ And he stretched, and measured himself upon the child three times, and cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord, my God, let the soul of this child, I beseech thee, return into his body. ²² And the Lord heard the voice of Elias: and the soul of the child returned into him, and he revived. ²³ And Elias took the child, and brought him down from the upper chamber to the house below, and delivered him to his mother, and said to her: Behold thy son liveth. ²⁴ And the woman said to Elias: Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and the word of the Lord in thy mouth is true.

³² The stranger did not stay without, my door was open to the traveller.

¹⁰ And he said to them: Wheresoever you shall enter into an house, there abide till you depart from that place.

⁴ And whatsoever house you shall enter into, abide there and depart not from thence.

⁷ And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house. ⁸ And into what city soever you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.

³⁸ Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain town: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. ³⁹ And she had a sister called Mary. who, sitting also at the Lord's feet, heard his word. ⁴⁰ But Martha was busy about much serving. Who stood and said: Lord, hast thou no care that my sister hath left me alone to serve? Speak to her therefore, that she help me. ⁴¹ And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful and art troubled about many things: ⁴² But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.

⁷ And when all saw it, they murmured, saying, that he was gone to be a guest with a man that was a sinner.

¹⁵ And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying: If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide there. And she constrained us.

¹ After these things, departing from Athens, he came to Corinth. ² And finding a certain Jew, named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with Priscilla his wife (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome), he came to them. ³ And because he was of the same trade, he remained with them and wrought. (Now they were tentmakers by trade.)

⁷ Because, for his name they went out, taking nothing of the Gentiles. ⁸ We therefore ought to receive such: that we may be fellow helpers of the truth.
