²⁸ Who answered him, saying: John the Baptist; but some Elias, and others as one of the prophets.

⁵ Behold, I will send you Elias the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

² And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.

¹⁴ But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

¹⁴ And king Herod heard, (for his name was made manifest,) and he said: John the Baptist is risen again from dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him. ¹⁵ And others said: It is Elias. But others said: It is a prophet, as one of the prophets. ¹⁶ Which Herod hearing, said: John whom I beheaded, he is risen again from the dead.

⁷ Now Herod, the tetrarch, heard of all things that were done by him. And he was in a doubt, because it was said ⁸ By some that John was risen from the dead: but by other some, that Elias had appeared: and by others, that one of the old prophets was risen again. ⁹ And Herod said: John I have beheaded. But who is this of whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him.

²¹ And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No.
