⁴ John was in the desert, baptizing and preaching the baptism of penance, unto remission of sins.

¹ And in those days cometh John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea. ² And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

⁶ And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire.

⁷⁷ To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins.

² Under the high priests Anna and Caiphas: the word of the Lord was made unto John, the son of Zachary, in the desert. ³ And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of penance for the remission of sins.

²³ And John also was baptizing in Ennon near Salim: because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.

³ And he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said: In John's baptism. ⁴ Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance saying: That they should believe in him, who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus.

¹⁶ And now why tarriest thou? Rise up and be baptized and wash away thy sins, invoking his name.
