And a great multitude of the city was with her. ¹³ Whom when the Lord had seen, being moved with mercy towards her, he said to her: Weep not. ¹⁴ And he came near and touched the bier. And they that carried it stood still. And he said: Young man, I say to thee, arise. ¹⁵ And he that was dead sat up and begun to speak. And he gave him to his mother. ¹⁶ And there came a fear upon them all: and they glorified God saying: A great prophet is risen up among us: and, God hath visited his people. ¹⁷ And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judea and throughout all the country round about. ¹⁸ And John's disciples told him of all these things. ¹⁹ And John called to him two of his disciples and sent them to Jesus, saying: Art thou he that art to come? Or look we for another? ²⁰ And when the men were come unto him, they said: John the Baptist hath sent us to thee, saying: Art thou he that art to come? Or look we for another? ²¹ (And in that same hour, he cured many of their diseases and hurts and evil spirits: and to many that were blind he gave sight.) ²² And answering, he said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are made clean, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, to the poor the gospel is preached. ²³ And blessed is he whosoever shall not be scandalized in me. ²⁴ And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak to the multitudes concerning John. What went ye out into the desert to see? A reed shaken with the wind? ²⁵ But what went you out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are in costly apparel and live delicately are in the houses of kings. ²⁶ But what went you out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet. ²⁷ This is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. ²⁸ For I say to you: Amongst those that are born of men, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist. But he that is the lesser in the kingdom of God is greater than he. ²⁹ And all the people hearing, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with John's baptism. ³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers despised the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized by him. ³¹ And the Lord said: Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like? ³² They are like to children sitting in the marketplace and speaking one to another and saying: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have mourned, and you have not wept. ³³ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine. And you say: He hath a devil. ³⁴ The Son of man is come eating and drinking. And you say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a drinker of wine, a friend of publicans and sinners. ³⁵ And wisdom is justified by all her children. ³⁶ And one of the Pharisees desired him to eat with him. And he went into the house of the Pharisee and sat down to meat. ³⁷ And behold a woman that was in the city, a sinner, when she knew that he sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment. ³⁸ And standing behind at his feet. she began to wash his feet with tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. ³⁹ And the Pharisee, who had invited him, seeing it, spoke within himself, saying: This man, if he were if a prophet, would know surely who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that she is a sinner. ⁴⁰ And Jesus answering, said to him: Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. But he said: Master, say it. ⁴¹ A certain creditor had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence and the other fifty. ⁴² And whereas they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which therefore of the two loveth him most? ⁴³ Simon answering, said: I suppose that he to whom he forgave most. And he said to him: Thou hast judged rightly. ⁴⁴ And turning to the woman, he said unto Simon: Dost thou see this woman? I entered into thy house: thou gavest me no water for my feet. But she with tears hath washed my feet; and with her hairs hath wiped them. ⁴⁵ Thou gavest me no kiss. But she, since she cane in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. ⁴⁶ My head with oil thou didst not anoint. But she with ointment hath anointed my feet. ⁴⁷ Wherefore, I say to thee: Many sins are forgiven her, because she hath loved much. But to whom less is forgiven, he loveth less. ⁴⁸ And he said to her: Thy sins are forgiven thee. ⁴⁹ And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves: Who is this that forgiveth sins also? ⁵⁰ And he said to the woman: Thy faith hath made thee safe. Go in peace.

¹⁵ I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall cursh thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.

⁴ But I will fetch a little water, and wash ye your feet, and rest ye under the tree.

² And said: I beseech you, my lords, turn in to the house of your servant, and lodge there: wash your feet, and in the morning you shall go on your way. And they said: No, but we will abide in the street.

² He said to him: Take thy only begotten son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and go into the land of vision; and there thou shalt offer him for an holocaust upon one of the mountains which I will shew thee.

¹² And he said to him: Lay not thy hand upon the boy, neither do thou any thing to him: now I know that thou fearest God, and hast not spared thy only begotten son for my sake.

¹⁸ And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice.

² And he said to the elder servant of his house, who was ruler over all he had: Put thy hand under my thigh, ³ That I may make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that thou take not a wife for my son, of the daughters of the Chanaanites, among whom I dwell: ⁴ But that thou go to my own country and kindred, and take a wife from thence for my son Isaac. ⁵ The servant answered: If the woman will not come with me into this land, must I bring thy son back again to the place from whence thou camest out? ⁶ And Abraham said: Beware thou never bring my son back again thither. ⁷ The Lord God of heaven, who took me out of my father's house, and out of my native country, who spoke to me, and swore to me, saying: To thy seed will I give this land: he will send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take from thence a wife for my son. ⁸ But if the woman will not follow thee, thou shalt not be bound by the oath: only bring not my son back thither again. ⁹ The servant, therefore, put his hand under the thigh of Abraham, his lord, and swore to him upon his word. ¹⁰ And he took ten camels of his master's herd, and departed, carrying something of all his goods with him, and he set forward and went on to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nachor. ¹¹ And when he had made the camels lie down without the town, near a well of water, in the evening, at the time when women are wont to come out to draw water, he said: ¹² O Lord, the God of my master, Abraham, meet me today, I beseech thee, and shew kindness to my master, Abraham. ¹³ Behold, I stand nigh the spring of water, and the daughters of the inhabitants of this city will come out to draw water: ¹⁴ Now, therefore, the maid to whom I shall say: Let down thy pitcher that I may drink: and she shall answer, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let it be the same whom thou hast provided for thy servant Isaac: and by this, I shall understand that thou hast shewn kindness to my master.

²⁷ Saying: Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not taken away his mercy and truth from my master, and hath brought me the straight way into the house of my master's brother.

³⁵ And the Lord hath blessed my master wonderfully, and he is become great: and he hath given him sheep and oxen, silver and gold, men servants and women servants, camels and asses. ³⁶ And Sara, my master's wife, hath borne my master a son in her old age, and he hath given him all that he had. ³⁷ And my master made me swear, saying: Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the Chanaanites, in whose land I dwell: ³⁸ But thou shalt go to my father's house, and shalt take a wife of my own kindred for my son: ³⁹ But I answered my master: What if the woman will not come with me? ⁴⁰ The Lord, said he, in whose sight I walk, will send his angel with thee, and will direct thy way: and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my own kindred, and of my father's house. ⁴¹ But thou shalt be clear from my curse, when thou shalt come to my kindred, if they will not give thee one. ⁴² And I came today to the well of water, and said: O Lord God of my master, Abraham, if thou hast prospered my way, wherein I now walk, ⁴³ Behold, I stand by the well of water, and the virgin, that shall come out to draw water, who shall hear me say: Give me a little water to drink of thy pitcher: ⁴⁴ And shall say to me: Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman, whom the Lord hath prepared for my master's son. ⁴⁵ And whilst I pondered these things secretly with myself, Rebecca appeared, coming with a pitcher, which she carried on her shoulder: and she went down to the well and drew water. And I said to her: Give me a little to drink. ⁴⁶ And she speedily let down the pitcher from her shoulder, and said to me: Both drink thou, and to thy camels I will give drink. I drank, and she watered the camels. ⁴⁷ And I asked her, and said: Whose daughter art thou? And she answered: I am the daughter of Bathuel, the son of Nachor, whom Melcha bore to him. So I put earrings on her to adorn her face, and I put bracelets on her hands. ⁴⁸ And falling down, I adored the Lord, blessing the Lord God of my master, Abraham, who hath brought me the straight way to take the daughter of my master's brother for his son. ⁴⁹ Wherefore, if you do according to mercy and truth with my master, tell me: but if it please you otherwise, tell me that also, that I may go to the right hand, or to the left.

³ Our father died in the desert, and was not in the sedition, that was raised against the Lord under Core, but he died in his own sin: and he had no male children. Why is his name taken away out of his family, because he had no son? Give us a possession among the kinsmen of our father.

(15:11) And God changed the king's spirit into mildness, and all in haste and in fear he leaped from his throne, and holding her up in his arms, till she came to herself, caressed her with these words:
(15:12) What is the matter, Esther? I am thy brother, fear not.
(15:13) Thou shalt not die: for this law is not made for thee, but for all others.
(15:14) Come near then, and touch the sceptre.
(15:15) And as she held her peace, he took the golden sceptre, and laid it upon her neck, and kissed her, and said: Why dost thou not speak to me?
(15:16) She answered: I saw thee, my lord, as an angel of God, and my heart was troubled for fear of thy majesty.
(15:17) For thou, my lord, art very admirable, and thy face is full of graces.
(15:18) And while she was speaking, she fell down again, and was almost in a swoon.
(15:19) But the king was troubled, and all his servants comforted her.}
And on the third day Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king's house, over against the king's hall: now he sat upon his throne in the hall of the palace, over against the door of the house.

¹⁵ And Mardochai going forth out of the palace, and from the king's presence, shone in royal apparel, to wit, of violet and sky colour, wearing a golden crown on his head, and clothed with a cloak of silk and purple. And all the city rejoiced, and was glad.

¹² So man when he is fallen asleep shall not rise again; till the heavens be broken, he shall not awake, nor rise up out of his sleep.

¹⁴ Shall man that is dead, thinkest thou, live again? all the days in which I am now in warfare, I expect until my change come.

¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me, and I comforted the heart of the widow.

¹⁵ I was an eye to the blind, and a foot to the lame.

⁵ If I have walked in vanity, and my foot hath made haste to deceit:

⁵ Thou hast prepared a table before me against them that afflict me. Thou hast anointed my head with oil; and my chalice which inebreateth me, how goodly is it!

¹ To David himself, understanding. Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. ² Blessed is the man to whom the Lord hath not imputed sin, and in whose spirit there is no guile. ³ Because I was silent my bones grew old; whilst I cried out all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: I am turned in my anguish, whilst the thorn is fastened. ⁵ I have acknowledged my sin to thee, and my injustice I have not concealed. I said I will confess against my self my injustice to the Lord: and thou hast forgiven the wickedness of my sin.

⁹ For he spoke and they were made: he commanded and they were created.

⁹ And to some who trusted in themselves as just and despised others, he spoke also this parable: ¹⁰ Two men went up into the temple to pray: the one a Pharisee and the other a publican. ¹¹ The Pharisee standing, prayed thus with himself: O God, I give thee thanks that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, as also is this publican.

⁸ For by grace you are saved through faith: and that not of yourselves, for it is the gift of God. ⁹ Not of works, that no man may glory. ¹⁰ For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus in good works, which God hath prepared that we should walk in them.
