³² And he said to them: Go and tell that fox: Behold, I cast out devils and do cures, to-day and to-morrow, and the third day I am consummated.

⁴ Thy prophets, O Israel, were like foxes in the deserts.

¹ And I said: Hear, O ye princes of Jacob, and ye chiefs of the house of Israel: Is it not your part to know judgment, ² You that hate good, and love evil: that violently pluck off their skins from them and their flesh from their bones? ³ Who have eaten the flesh of my people, and have flayed their skin off them: and have broken, and chopped their bones as for the kettle, and as flesh in the midst of the pot.

³ Her princes are in the midst of her as roaring lions: her judges are evening wolves, they left nothing for the morning.

¹⁴ And king Herod heard, (for his name was made manifest,) and he said: John the Baptist is risen again from dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.

²⁶ And the king was struck sad. Yet because of his oath, and because of them that were with him at table, he would not displease her: ²⁷ But sending an executioner, he commanded that his head should be brought in a dish. ²⁸ And he beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a dish: and gave to the damsel, and the damsel gave it her mother.

¹⁹ But Herod the tetrarch, when he was reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done: ²⁰ He added this also above all and shut up John in prison.

⁷ Now Herod, the tetrarch, heard of all things that were done by him. And he was in a doubt, because it was said ⁸ By some that John was risen from the dead: but by other some, that Elias had appeared: and by others, that one of the old prophets was risen again. ⁹ And Herod said: John I have beheaded. But who is this of whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him.

⁸ And Herod seeing Jesus, was very glad: for he was desirous of a long time to see him, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to see some sign wrought by him. ⁹ And he questioned him in many words. But he answered him nothing. ¹⁰ And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, earnestly accusing him. ¹¹ And Herod with his army set him at nought and mocked him, putting on him a white garment: and sent him back to Pilate.

³² Jesus answered them: Many good works I have shewed you from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me?

⁸ The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee. And goest thou thither again? ⁹ Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world: ¹⁰ But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.

⁴ I have glorified thee on the earth; I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. ⁵ And now glorify thou me, O Father, with thyself, with the glory which I had, before the world was, with thee.

³⁰ Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.

¹⁰ For it became him for whom are all things and by whom are all things, who had brought many children into glory, to perfect the author of their salvation, by his passion.

⁹ And being consummated, he became, to all that obey him, the cause of eternal salvation:

²⁸ For the law maketh men priests, who have infirmity: but the word of the oath (which was since the law) the Son who is perfected for evermore.
