^{66 (6:67)} After this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.

⁶ And them that turn away from following after the Lord, and that have not sought the Lord, nor searched after him.

⁴⁰ For as Jonas was in the whale's belly three days and three nights: so shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. ⁴¹ The men of Ninive shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas. And behold a greater than Jonas here. ⁴² The queen of the south shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold a greater than Solomon here. ⁴³ And when an unclean spirit is gone out of a man he walketh through dry places seeking rest, and findeth none. ⁴⁴ Then he saith: I will return into my house from whence I came out. And coming he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. ⁴⁵ Then he goeth, and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is made worse than the first. So shall it be also to this wicked generation.

²⁰ And he that received the seed upon stony ground, is he that heareth the word, and immediately receiveth it with joy. ²¹ Yet hath he not root in himself, but is only for a time: and when there ariseth tribulation and persecution because of the word, he is presently scandalized.

²² And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad: for he had great possessions.

⁸ And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way: and others cut boughs from the trees and strewed them in the way. ⁹ And the multitudes that went before and that followed cried, saying: Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. ¹⁰ And when he was come into Jerusalem, the whole city was moved, saying: Who is this? ¹¹ And the people said: This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.

²⁰ But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people that they should ask Barabbas and make Jesus away. ²¹ And the governor answering, said to them: Whether will you of the two to be released unto you? But they said: Barabbas. ²² Pilate saith to them: What shall I do then with Jesus that is called Christ? They say all: Let him be crucified. ²³ The governor said to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying: Let him be crucified. ²⁴ And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this just man. Look you to it. ²⁵ And the whole people answering, said: His blood be upon us and upon our children.

⁶² Jesus said to him: No man putting his hand to the plough and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.

^{60 (6:61)} Many therefore of his disciples, hearing it, said: This saying is hard; and who can hear it?

^{64 (6:65)} But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that did not believe and who he was that would betray him.

³¹ Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed.

¹⁵ Thou knowest this, that all they who are in Asia are turned away from me: of whom are Phigellus and Hermogenes.

³⁸ But my just man liveth by faith: but if he withdraw himself, he shall not please my soul.

²⁰ For if, flying from the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they be again entangled in them and overcome: their latter state is become unto them worse than the former. ²¹ For it had been better for them not to have known the way of justice than, after they have known it, to turn back from that holy commandment which was delivered to them. ²² For, that of the true proverb has happened to them: The dog is returned to his vomit; and: The sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

¹⁹ They went out from us but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would no doubt have remained with us: but that they may be manifest, that they are not all of us.
