¹⁰ The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath. It is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.

⁸ Remember that thou keep holy the sabbath day. ⁹ Six days shalt thou labour, and shalt do all thy works. ¹⁰ But on the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work on it, thou nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy beast, nor the stranger that is within thy gates. ¹¹ For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all things that are in them, and rested on the seventh day: therefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.

¹² And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ¹³ Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: See that you keep my sabbath; because it is a sign between me and you in your generations that you may know that I am the Lord, who sanctify you. ¹⁴ keep you my sabbath: for it is holy unto you: he that shall profane it, shall be put to death: he that shall do any work in it, his soul shall perish out of the midst of his people. ¹⁵ Six days shall you do work: in the seventh day is the sabbath, the rest holy to the Lord. Every one that shall do any work on this day, shall die. ¹⁶ Let the children of Israel keep the sabbath, and celebrate it in their generations. It is an everlasting covenant ¹⁷ Between me and the children of Israel, and a perpetual sign. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and in the seventh he ceased from work.

¹⁵ In those days I saw in Juda some treading the presses on the sabbath, and carrying sheaves, and lading asses with wine, and grapes, and figs, and all manner of burthens, and bringing them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. And I charged them that they should sell on a day on which it was lawful to sell. ¹⁶ Some Tyrians also dwelt there, who brought fish, and all manner of wares: and they sold them on the sabbaths to the children of Juda in Jerusalem. ¹⁷ And I rebuked the chief men of Juda, and said to them: What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day: ¹⁸ Did not our fathers do these things, and our God brought all this evil upon us, and upon this city? And you bring more wrath upon Israel by violating the sabbath. ¹⁹ And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem were at rest on the sabbath day, I spoke: and they shut the gates, and I commanded that they should not open them till after the sabbath: and I set some of my servants at the gates, that none should bring in burthens on the sabbath day. ²⁰ So the merchants, and they that sold all kinds of wares, stayed without Jerusalem, once or twice. ²¹ And I charged them, and I said to them: Why stay you before the wall? if you do so another time, I will lay hands on you. And from that time they came no more on the sabbath.

¹³ If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy own will in my holy day, and call the sabbath delightful, and the holy of the Lord glorious, and glorify him, while thou dost not thy own ways, and thy own will is not found, to speak a word:

²¹ Thus saith the Lord: Take heed to your souls, and carry no burdens on the sabbath day: and bring them not in by the gates of Jerusalem.

²⁷ But if you will not hearken to me, to sanctify the sabbath day, and not to carry burdens, and not to bring them in by the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day: I will kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the houses of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

² And the Pharisees seeing them, said to him: Behold thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days. ³ But he said to them: Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and they that were with him: ⁴ How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the loaves of proposition, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for them that were with him, but for the priests only? ⁵ Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple break the sabbath, and are without blame? ⁶ But I tell you that there is here a greater than the temple. ⁷ And if you knew what this meaneth: I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: you would never have condemned the innocent. ⁸ For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath.

²⁴ And the Pharisees said to him: Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?

⁴ And he saith to them: Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? To save life, or to destroy? But they held their peace.

² And some of the Pharisees said to them: Why do you that which is not lawful on the sabbath days?

¹⁴ And the ruler of the synagogue being angry that Jesus had healed on the sabbath answering, said to the multitude: Six days there are wherein you ought to work. In them therefore come and be healed: and not on the sabbath day.

⁵⁶ And returning, they prepared spices and ointments: and on the sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment.

¹⁶ Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.

²³ If a man receive circumcision on the sabbath day, that the law of Moses may not be broken: are you angry at me, because I have healed the whole man on the sabbath day?

¹⁶ Some therefore of the Pharisees said: This man is not of God, who keepeth not the sabbath. But others said: How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
