²⁵ And there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews, concerning purification.

¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire.

² And when they had seen some of his disciples eat bread with common, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault. ³ For the Pharisees and all the Jews eat not without often washing their hands, holding the tradition of the ancients. ⁴ And when they come from the market, unless they be washed, they eat not: and many other things there are that have been delivered to them to observe, the washings of cups and of pots and of brazen vessels and of beds. ⁵ And the Pharisees and scribes asked him: Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients, but they eat bread with common hands?

⁸ For leaving the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, the washing of pots and of cups: and many other things you do like to these.

⁶ Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three measures apiece.

² Of the doctrine of baptisms and imposition of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

¹⁰ And divers washings and justices of the flesh laid on them until the time of correction.

¹³ For if the blood of goats and of oxen, and the ashes of an heifer, being sprinkled, sanctify such as are defiled, to the cleansing of the flesh: ¹⁴ How much more shall the blood of Christ, who by the Holy Ghost offered himself unspotted unto God, cleanse our conscience from dead works, to serve the living God?

²³ It is necessary therefore that the patterns of heavenly things should be cleansed with these: but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

²¹ Whereunto baptism, being of the like form, now saveth you also: not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but, the examination of a good conscience towards God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
