²³ God hath given him place for penance, and he abuseth it unto pride: but his eyes are upon his ways.

¹¹ For he knoweth the vanity of men, and when he seeth iniquity, doth he not consider it?

⁶ The tabernacles of robbers abound, and they provoke God boldly; whereas it is he that hath given all into their hands:

¹³ Wherefore hath the wicked provoked God? for he hath said in his heart: He will not require it. ¹⁴ Thou seest it, for thou considerest labour and sorrow: that thou mayst deliver them into thy hands. To thee is the poor man left: thou wilt be a helper to the orphan.

^{4 (11:5)} The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven. His eyes look on the poor man: his eyelids examine the sons of men. ^{5 (11:6)} The Lord trieth the just and the wicked: but he that loveth iniquity, hateth his own soul.

³ Because I had a zeal on occasion of the wicked, seeing the prosperity of sinners. ⁴ For there is no regard to their death, nor is there strength in their stripes. ⁵ They are not in the labour of men: neither shall they be scourged like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride hath held them fast: they are covered with their iniquity and their wickedness. ⁷ Their iniquity hath come forth, as it were from fatness: they have passed into the affection of the heart. ⁸ They have thought and spoken wickedness: they have spoken iniquity on high. ⁹ They have set their mouth against heaven: and their tongue hath passed through the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore will my people return here and full days shall be found in them. ¹¹ And they said: How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? ¹² Behold these are sinners; and yet, abounding in the world they have obtained riches.

²¹ The Lord beholdeth the ways of man, and considereth all his steps.

³ The eyes of the Lord in every place behold the good and the evil.

²¹ If thy enemy be hungry, give him to eat: if he thirst, give him water to drink: ²² For thou shalt heap hot coals upon his head, and the Lord will reward thee. ²³ The north wind driveth away rain, as doth a sad countenance a backbiting tongue.

^{8 (5:7)} If thou shalt see the oppressions of the poor, and violent judgments, and justice perverted in the province, wonder not at this matter: for he that is high hath another higher, and there are others still higher than these:

¹¹ For because sentence is not speedily pronounced against the evil, the children of men commit evils without any fear.

⁸ For he shall say: ⁹ Are not my princes as so many kings? is not Calano as Charcamis: and Emath as Arphad? is not Samaria as Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idol, so also their idols of Jerusalem, and of Samaria. ¹¹ Shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

¹² Come, let us take wine, and be filled with drunkenness: and it shall be as to day, so also to morrow, and much more.

¹ Thou indeed, O Lord, art just, if I plead with thee, but yet I will speak what is just to thee: Why doth the way of the wicked prosper: why is it well with all them that transgress, and do wickedly? ² Thou hast planted them, and they have taken root: they prosper and bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins. ³ And thou, O Lord, hast known me, thou hast seen me, and proved my heart with thee: gather them together as for the day of slaughter.

⁷ The Lord hath sworn against the pride of Jacob: surely I will never forget all their works.

² Though they go down even to hell, thence shall my hand bring them out: and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down.

¹³ Thy eyes are too pure to behold evil, and thou canst not look on iniquity. Why lookest thou upon them that do unjust things, and holdest thy peace when the wicked devoureth the man that is more just than himself?

¹⁶ And he spoke a similitude to them, saying: The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits. ¹⁷ And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns and will build greater: and into them will I gather all things that are grown to me and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years. Take thy rest: eat, drink, make good cheer. ²⁰ But God said to him: Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul of thee. And whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

⁴⁵ But if that servant shall say in his heart: My Lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the men-servants and maid-servants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk:

³ For when they shall say: Peace and security; then shall sudden destruction come upon them, as the pains upon her that is with child, and they shall not escape.

²³ And I will kill her children with death: and all the churches shall know that I am he that searcheth the reins and hearts. And I will give to every one of you according to your works. But to you I say
