³¹ The prophets prophesied falsehood, and the priests clapped their hands: and my people loved such things: what then shall be done in the end thereof?

²⁹ O that they would be wise and would understand, and would provide for their last end.

³ What will you do in the day of visitation, and of the calamity which cometh from afar? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?

⁶ And the inhabitants of this isle shall say in that day: Lo this was our hope, to whom we fled for help, to deliver us from the face of the king of the Assyrians: and how shall we be able to escape?

¹⁰ Who say to the seers: See not: and to them that behold: Behold not for us those things that are right: speak unto us pleasant things, see errors for us. ¹¹ Take away from me the way, turn away the path from me, let the Holy One of Israel cease from before us.

¹⁴ The sinners in Sion are afraid, trembling hath seized upon the hypocrites. Which of you can dwell with devouring fire? which of you shall dwell with everlasting burnings?

³⁰ But when thou art spoiled what wilt thou do? though thou clothest thyself with scarlet, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, and paintest thy eyes with stibic stone, thou shalt dress thyself out in vain: thy lovers have despised thee, they will seek thy life. ³¹ For I have heard the voice as of a woman in travail, anguishes as of a woman in labour of a child. The voice of the daughter of Sion, dying away, spreading her hands: Woe is me, for my soul hath fainted because of them that are slain.

¹⁴ And the Lord said to me: The prophets prophesy falsely in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, nor have I spoken to them: they prophesy unto you a lying vision, and divination and deceit, and the seduction of their own heart.

²² The wind shall feed all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity and then shalt thou be confounded, and ashamed of all thy wickedness. ²³ Thou that sittest in Libanus, and makest thy nest in the cedars, how hast thou mourned when sorrows came upon thee, as the pains of a woman in labour?

²⁵ I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, and say: I have dreamed, I have dreamed. ²⁶ How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies, and that prophesy the delusions of their own heart?

⁹ Teth. Her filthiness is on her feet, and she hath not remembered her end; she is wonderfully cast down, not having a comforter: behold, O Lord, my affliction, because the enemy is lifted up.

¹⁴ Nun. Thy prophets have seen false and foolish things for thee: and they have not laid open thy iniquity, to excite thee to penance: but they have seen for thee false revelations and banishments.

⁶ They see vain things, and they foretell lies, saying: The Lord saith: whereas the Lord hath not sent them: and they have persisted to confirm what they have said.

¹⁴ Shall thy heart endure, or shall thy hands prevail in the days which I will bring upon thee: I the Lord have spoken, and will do it.

⁶ Speak ye not, saying: It shall not drop upon these, confusion shall not take them.

¹¹ Would God I were not a man that hath the spirit, and that I rather spoke a lie: I will let drop to thee of wine, and of drunkeness: and it shall be this people upon whom it shall drop.

¹¹ Her princes have judged for bribes: and her priests have taught for hire, and her prophets divined for money: and they leaned upon the Lord, saying: Is not the Lord in the midst of us? no evil shall come among us.

² Before the decree bring forth the day as dust passing away, before the fierce anger of the Lord come upon you, before the day of the Lord's indignation come upon you. ³ Seek the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, you that have wrought his judgment: seek the just, seek the meek: if by any means you may be hid in the day of the Lord's indignation.

¹⁵ Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. ¹⁶ By their fruits you shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? ¹⁷ Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, and the evil tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment: Because the light is come into the world and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil. ²⁰ For every one that doth evil hateth the light and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved. ²¹ But he that doth truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest: because they are done in God.

¹³ For such false apostles are deceitful workmen, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And no wonder: for Satan himself transformeth himself into an angel of light. ¹⁵ Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers be transformed as the ministers of justice, whose end shall be according to their works.

⁹ Whose coming is according to the working of Satan, in all power and signs and lying wonders: ¹⁰ And in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish: because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ^{11 (2:10)} Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying:

³ For there shall be a time when they will not endure sound doctrine but, according to their own desires, they will heap to themselves teachers having itching ears: ⁴ And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables.

¹ But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers who shall bring in sects of perdition and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction. ² And many shall follow their riotousness, through whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
