¹¹ The princes of Tanis are become fools, the wise counsellors of Pharao have given foolish counsel: how will you say to Pharao: I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings?

³⁸ And he said to them: Can we find such another man, that is full of the spirit of God? ³⁹ He said therefore to Joseph: Seeing God hath shewn thee all that thou hast said, can I find one wiser and one like unto thee?

³⁰ And the wisdom of Solomon surpassed the wisdom of all the Orientals, and of the Egyptians;

¹² Who bringeth to nought the designs of the malignant, so that their hands cannot accomplish what they had begun: ¹³ Who catcheth the wise in their craftiness, and disappointeth the counsel of the wicked:

¹⁷ He bringeth counsellors to a foolish end, and judges to insensibility.

¹⁰ The Lord bringeth to nought the counsels of nations; and he rejecteth the devices of people, and casteth away the counsels of princes.

²² And I am brought to nothing, and I knew not.

¹² Wonderful things did he do in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tanis.

⁴³ How he wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Tanis.

² I am the most foolish of men, and the wisdom of men is not with me.

³ And the spirit of Egypt shall be broken in the bowels thereof, and I will cast down their counsel: and they shall consult their idols, and their diviners, and their wizards, and soothsayers.

¹³ The princes of Tanis are become fools, the princes of Memphis are gone astray, they have deceived Egypt, the stay of the people thereof.

¹⁴ Therefore behold I will proceed to cause an admiration in this people, by a great and wonderful miracle: for wisdom shall perish from their wise men, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

⁴ For thy princes were in Tanis, and thy messengers came even to Hanes.

²⁵ That make void the tokens of diviners, and make the soothsayers mad. That turn the wise backward, and that make their knowledge foolish.

¹⁴ Every man is become a fool for knowledge, every artist is confounded in his graven idol: for what he hath cast is false, and there is no spirit in them.

²¹ Because the pastors have done foolishly, and have not sought the Lord: therefore have they not understood, and all their flock is scattered.

⁷ Against Edom. Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Is wisdom no more in Theman? counsel is perished from her children: their wisdom is become unprofitable.

²⁶ Trouble shall come upon trouble, and rumour upon rumour, and they shall seek a vision of the prophet, and the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients.

¹⁴ And I will destroy the land of Phatures, and will make a fire in Taphnis, and will execute judgments in Alexandria.

²² And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians: and he was mighty in his words and in his deeds.

¹⁹ For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise: and the prudence of the prudent I will reject. ²⁰ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
