¹⁶ Therefore the sovereign Lord, the Lord of hosts, shall send leanness among his fat ones: and under his glory shall be kindled a burning, as it were the burning of a fire.

²¹ And the Lord sent an angel, who cut off all the stout men and the warriors, and the captains of the army of the king of the Assyrians: and he returned with disgrace into his own country. And when he was come into the house of his god, his sons that came out of his bowels, slew him with the sword.

¹⁵ And he gave them their request: and sent fulness into their souls.

¹⁷ And the lambs shall feed according to their order, and strangers shall eat the deserts turned into fruitfulness.

⁷ Therefore behold the Lord will bring upon them the waters of the river strong and many, the king of the Assyrians, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and shall overflow all his banks.

⁵ For every violent taking of spoils, with tumult, and garment mingled with blood, shall be burnt, and be fuel for the fire.

¹⁸ And the glory of his forest, and of his beautiful hill, shall be consumed from the soul even to the flesh, and he shall run away through fear.

²⁴ The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying: Surely as I have thought, so shall it be: and as I have purposed, ²⁵ So shall it fall out: That I will destroy the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: and his yoke shall be taken away from them, and his burden shall be taken off their shoulder. ²⁶ This is the counsel, that I have purposed upon all the earth, and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all nations. ²⁷ For the Lord of hosts hath decreed, and who can disannul it? and his hand is stretched out: and who shall turn it away?

⁴ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall grow lean.

⁵ And the multitude of them that fan thee, shall be like small dust: and as ashes passing away, the multitude of them that have prevailed against thee. ⁶ And it shall be at an instant suddenly. A visitation shall come from the Lord of hosts in thunder, and with earthquake, and with a great noise of whirlwind and tempest; and with the flame of devouring fire. ⁷ And the multitude of all nations that have fought against Ariel, shall be as the dream of a vision by night, and all that have fought, and besieged and prevailed against it. ⁸ And as he that is hungry dreameth, and eateth, but when he is awake, his soul is empty: and as he that is thirsty dreameth, and drinketh and after he is awake, is yet faint with thirst, and his soul is empty: so shall be the multitude of all the Gentiles, that have fought against mount Sion.

³⁰ And the Lord shall make the glory of his voice to be heard, and shall shew the terror of his arm, in the threatening of wrath, and the flame of devouring fire: he shall crush to pieces with whirlwind, and hailstones. ³¹ For at the voice of the Lord the Assyrian shall fear being struck with the rod. ³² And the passage of the rod shall be strongly grounded, which the Lord shall make to rest upon him with timbrels and harps, and in great battles he shall overthrow them. ³³ For Topheth is prepared from yesterday, prepared by the king, deep, and wide. The nourishment thereof is fire and much wood: the breath of the Lord as a torrent of brimstone kindling it.

¹⁰ Now will I rise up, saith the Lord: now will I be exalted, now will I lift up myself. ¹¹ You shall conceive heat, you shall bring forth stubble: your breath as fire shall devour you. ¹² And the people shall be as ashes after a fire, as a bundle of thorns they shall be burnt with fire. ¹³ Hear, you that are far off, what I have done, and you that are near know my strength. ¹⁴ The sinners in Sion are afraid, trembling hath seized upon the hypocrites. Which of you can dwell with devouring fire? which of you shall dwell with everlasting burnings?

⁶ And Isaias said to them: Thus shall you say to your master: Thus saith the Lord: Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of the Assyrians have blasphemed me. ⁷ Behold, I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a message, and shall return to his own country, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own country.

²⁹ When thou wast mad against me, thy pride came up to my ears: therefore I will put a ring in thy nose, and a bit between thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

³⁶ And the angel of the Lord went out and slew in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand. And they arose in the morning, and behold they were all dead corpses.

²³ And forthwith an angel of the Lord struck him, because he had not given the honour to God: and, being eaten up by worms, he gave up the ghost.
