¹⁸ Their banquet is separated, they have gone astray by fornication: they that should have protected them have loved to bring shame upon them.

⁸ Neither shalt thou take bribes, which even blind the wise, and pervert the words of the just.

¹⁹ And not go aside to either part. Thou shalt not accept person nor gifts: for gifts blind the eyes of the wise, and change the words of the just.

³² Their vines are of the vineyard of Sodom, and of the suburbs of Gomorrha: their grapes are grapes of gall, and their clusters most bitter. ³³ Their wine is the gall of dragons, and the venom of asps, which is incurable.

³ And his sons walked not in his ways: but they turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

³ Speak of me before the Lord, and before his anointed, whether I have taken any man's ox, or ass: if I have wronged any man, if I have oppressed any man, if I have taken a bribe at any man's hand: and I will despise it this day, and will restore it to you. ⁴ And they said: Thou hast not wronged us, nor oppressed us, nor taken ought at any man's hand.

⁷ For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord, their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharao, king of Egypt; and they worshipped strange gods. ⁸ And they walked according to the way of the nations which the Lord had destroyed in the sight of the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel: because they had done in like manner. ⁹ And the children of Israel offended the Lord, their God, with things that were not right: and built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city. ¹⁰ And they made them statues and groves on every high hill, and under every shady tree: ¹¹ And they burnt incense there upon altars, after the manner of the nations which the Lord had removed from their face: and they did wicked things, provoking the Lord. ¹² And they worshipped abominations, concerning which the Lord had commanded them that they should not do this thing. ¹³ And the Lord testified to them in Israel, and in Juda, by the hand of all the prophets and seers, saying: Return from your wicked ways, and keep my precepts, and ceremonies, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers: and as I have sent to you in the hand of my servants the prophets. ¹⁴ And they hearkened not, but hardened their necks like to the neck of their fathers, who would not obey the Lord, their God. ¹⁵ And they rejected his ordinances, and the covenant that he made with their fathers, and the testimonies which he testified against them: and they followed vanities, and acted vainly: and they followed the nations that were round about them, concerning which the Lord had commanded them that they should not do as they did. ¹⁶ And they forsook all the precepts of the Lord, their God: and made to themselves two molten calves, and groves, and adored all the host of heaven: and they served Baal, ¹⁷ And consecrated their sons, and their daughters, through fire: and they gave themselves to divinations, and soothsayings: and they delivered themselves up to do evil before the Lord, to provoke him.

¹⁵ The horseleech hath two daughters that say: Bring, bring. There are three things that never are satisfied, and the fourth never saith: It is enough. ¹⁶ Hell and the mouth of the womb, and the earth which is not satisfied with water: and the fire never saith: It is enough.

²¹ How is the faithful city, that was full of judgment, become a harlot? justice dwelt in it, but now murderers. ²² Thy silver is turned into dross: thy wine is mingled with water.

²¹ Yet, I planted thee a chosen vineyard, all true seed: how then art thou turned unto me into that which is good for nothing, O strange vineyard?

² Cursing, and lying, and killing, and theft, and adultery, have overflowed, and blood hath touched blood.

¹⁰ And they shall eat and shall not be filled: they have committed fornication, and have not ceased: because they have forsaken the Lord in not observing the law.

¹² Because I know your manifold crimes, and your grievous sins: enemies of the just, taking bribes, and oppressing the poor in the gate.

¹¹ Her princes have judged for bribes: and her priests have taught for hire, and her prophets divined for money: and they leaned upon the Lord, saying: Is not the Lord in the midst of us? no evil shall come among us.

³ The evil of their hands they call good: the prince requireth, and the judge is for giving: and the great man hath uttered the desire of his soul, and they have troubled it.
