⁶ And when he passed before him, he said: O the Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, patient and of much compassion, and true,

¹³ Moses said to God: Lo, I shall go to the children of Israel, and say to them: The God of your fathers hath sent me to you. If they shall say to me: What is his name? What shall I say to them? ¹⁴ God said to Moses: I AM WHO AM. He said: Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: HE WHO IS, hath sent me to you. ¹⁵ And God said again to Moses: Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: The Lord God of your fathers the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob hath sent me to you; this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. ¹⁶ Go and gather together the ancients of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared to me, saying: Visiting I have visited you; and I have seen all that hath befallen you in Egypt.

²⁷ For that same is the only thing, wherewith he is covered, the clothing of his body, neither hath he any other to sleep in: if he cry to me, I will hear him, because I am compassionate.

²⁰ And again he said: Thou canst not see my face: for man shall not see me, and live. ²¹ And again he said: Behold there is a place with me, and thou shalt stand upon the rock. ²² And when my glory shall pass, I will set thee in a hole of the rock, and protect thee with my righthand till I pass: ²³ And I will take away my hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face thou canst not see.

¹⁷ Let then the strength of the Lord be magnified, as thou hast sworn, saying: ¹⁸ The Lord is patient and full of mercy, by taking away iniquity and wickedness, and leaving no man clear, who visitest the sins of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. ¹⁹ Forgive, I beseech thee, the sins of this people, according to the greatness of thy mercy, as thou hast been merciful to them from their going out of Egypt unto this place.

¹⁰ And shewing mercy unto many thousands, to them that love me, and keep my commandments.

¹¹ And he said to him: Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord: and behold the Lord passeth, and a great and strong wind before the Lord, overthrowing the mountains, and breaking the rocks in pieces: but the Lord is not in the wind. And after the wind, an earthquake: but the Lord is not in the earthquake.

⁹ For if you turn again to the Lord, your brethren, and children shall find mercy before their masters, that have led them away captive, and they shall return into this land: for the Lord your God is merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if you return to him.

¹⁷ And they would not hear, and they remembered not thy wonders which thou hadst done for them. And they hardened their necks, and gave the head to return to their bondage, as it were by contention. But thou, a forgiving God, gracious, and merciful, longsuffering, and full of compassion, didst not forsake them.

^{19 (31:20)} O how great is the multitude of thy sweetness, O Lord, which thou hast hidden for them that fear thee! Which thou hast wrougth for them that hope in thee, in the sight of the sons of men.

⁵ For thou, O Lord, art sweet and mild: and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon thee.

¹⁵ And thou, O Lord, art a God of compassion, and merciful, patient, and of much mercy, and true.

⁴ He will overshadow thee with his shoulders: and under his wings thou shalt trust.

⁸ The Lord is compassionate and merciful: longsuffering and plenteous in mercy. ⁹ He will not always be angry: nor will he threaten for ever. ¹⁰ He hath not dealt with us according to our sins: nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. ¹¹ For according to the height of the heaven above the earth: he hath strengthened his mercy towards them that fear him. ¹² As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our iniquities from us. ¹³ As a father hath compassion on his children, so hath the Lord compassion on them that fear him:

⁴ He hath made a remembrance of his wonderful works, being a merciful and gracious Lord:

⁸ All his commandments are faithful: confirmed for ever and ever, made in truth and equity.

⁴ To the righteous a light is risen up in darkness: he is merciful, and compassionate and just.

⁵ The Lord is merciful and just, and our God sheweth mercy.

² I will worship towards thy holy temple, and I will give glory to thy name. For thy mercy, and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy holy name above all.

⁸ The Lord is gracious and merciful: patient and plenteous in mercy.

⁶ Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all things that are in them.

⁴ And you shall say in that day: Praise ye the Lord, and call upon his name: make his works known among the people: remember that his name is high.

²³ Heth. They are new every morning, great is thy faithfulness.

¹³ And rend your hearts, and not your garments and turn to the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, patient and rich in mercy, and ready to repent of the evil.

² And he prayed to the Lord, and said: I beseech thee, O Lord, is not this what I said, when I was yet in my own country? therefore I went before to flee into Tharsis: for I know that thou art a gracious and merciful God, patient, and of much compassion, and easy to forgive evil.

¹⁸ Who is a God like to thee, who takest away iniquity, and passest by the sin of the remnant of thy inheritance? he will send his fury in no more, because he delighteth in mercy.

²⁰ Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, the mercy to Abraham: which thou hast sworn to our fathers from the days of old.

¹⁷ For the law was given by Moses: grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

⁴ Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and patience and longsuffering? Knowest thou not that the benignity of God leadeth thee to penance?

²⁰ Now the law entered in that sin might abound. And where sin abounded, grace did more abound. ²¹ That as sin hath reigned to death: so also grace might reign by justice unto life everlasting, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

⁷ In whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins, according to the riches of his, grace, ⁸ Which hath superabounded in us, in all wisdom and prudence,
