¹¹ And he declared to them the greatness of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and with how great glory the king had advanced him above all his princes and servants.

¹ But after that he had heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying: Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's, and being enriched by his substance is become great.

⁴ That he might shew the riches of the glory of his kingdom, and the greatness, and boasting of his power, for a long time, to wit, for a hundred and fourscore days.

¹ After these things, king Assuerus advanced Aman, the son of Amadathi, who was of the race of Agag: and he set his throne above all the princes that were with him.

⁷ Pharsandatha, and Delphon, and Esphatha ⁸ And Phoratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha, ⁹ And Phermesta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Jezatha. ¹⁰ And when they had slain them, they would not touch the spoils of their goods.

¹² And he said to the queen: The Jews have killed five hundred men in the city of Susan, besides the ten sons of Aman: how many dost thou think they have slain in all the provinces? What askest thou more, and what wilt thou have me to command to be done? ¹³ And she answered: If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews, to do to morrow in Susan as they have done to day, and that the ten sons of Aman may be hanged upon gibbets.

¹⁴ If his sons be multiplied, they shall be for the sword, and his grandsons shall not be filled with bread. ¹⁵ They that shall remain of him, shall be buried in death, and his widows shall not weep.

²⁴ If I have thought gold my strength, and have said to fine gold: My confidence: ²⁵ If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.

^{16 (49:17)} Be not thou afraid, when a man shall be made rich, and when the glory of his house shall be increased. ^{17 (49:18)} For when he shall die he shall take nothing away; nor shall his glory descend with him.

⁸ For he shall say:

²³ Thus saith the Lord: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, and let not the strong man glory in his strength, and let not the rich man glory in his riches: ²⁴ But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, for I am the Lord that exercise mercy, and judgment, and justice in the earth: for these things please me, saith the Lord.

^{30 (4:27)} And the king answered, and said: Is not this the great Babylon, which I have built, to be the seat of the kingdom, by the strength of my power, and in the glory of my excellence?

¹³ Ephraim, as I saw, was a Tyre, founded in beauty: and Ephraim shall bring out his children to the murderer. ¹⁴ Give them, O Lord. What wilt thou give them? Give them a womb without children, and dry breasts.

²⁴ And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus again answering, saith to them: Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God?

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years. Take thy rest: eat, drink, make good cheer. ²⁰ But God said to him: Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul of thee. And whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

¹⁷ Charge the rich of this world not to be highminded nor to trust in the uncertainty of riches, but in the living God (who giveth us abundantly all things to enjoy)
