And we slew them. ⁸ And took their land, and delivered it for a possession to Ruben and Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses. ⁹ Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and fulfil them: that you may understand all that you do. ¹⁰ You all stand this day before the Lord your God, your princes, and tribes, and ancients, and doctors, all the people of Israel, ¹¹ Your children and your wives, and the stranger that abideth with thee in the camp, besides the hewers of wood, and them that bring water: ¹² That thou mayst pass in the covenant of the Lord thy God, and in the oath which this day the Lord thy God maketh with thee. ¹³ That he may raise thee up a people to himself, and he may be thy God as he hath spoken to thee, and as he swore to thy fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. ¹⁴ Neither with you only do I make this covenant, and confirm these oaths, ¹⁵ But with all that are present and that are absent. ¹⁶ For you know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we have passed through the midst of nations, and passing through them, ¹⁷ You have seen their abominations and filth, that is to say, their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which they worshipped. ¹⁸ Lest perhaps there should be among you a man or a woman, a family or a tribe, whose heart is turned away this day from the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations: and there should be among you a root bringing forth gall and bitterness. ¹⁹ And when he shall hear the words of this oath, he should bless himself in his heart saying: I shall have peace, and will walk on in the naughtiness of my heart: and the drunken may consume the thirsty, ²⁰ And the Lord should not forgive him: but his wrath and jealousy against that man should be exceedingly enkindled at that time, and all the curses that are written in this volume should light upon him: and the Lord should blot out his name from under heaven, ²¹ And utterly destroy him out of all the tribes of Israel, according to the curses that are contained in the book of this law and covenant: ²² And the following generation shall say, and the children that shall be born hereafter, and the strangers that shall come from afar, seeing the plagues of that land and the evils wherewith the Lord hath afflicted it, ²³ Burning it with brimstone, and the heat of salt, so that it cannot be sown any more, nor any green thing grow therein, after the example of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrha, Adama and Seboim, which the Lord destroyed in his wrath and indignation: ²⁴ And all the nations shall say: Why hath the Lord done thus to this land? what meaneth this exceeding great heat of his wrath? ²⁵ And they shall answer: Because they forsook the covenant of the Lord, which he made with their fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt: ²⁶ And they have served strange gods, and adored them, whom they knew not, and for whom they had not been assigned: ²⁷ Therefore the wrath of the Lord was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this volume: ²⁸ And he hath cast them out of their land, in anger and in wrath, and in very great indignation, and hath thrown them into a strange land, as it is seen this day. ²⁹ Secret things to the Lord our God: things that are manifest, to us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

You shall flee when no man pursueth you. ¹⁸ But if you will not yet for all this obey me: I will chastise you seven times more for your sins. ¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your stubbornness: and I will make to you the heaven above as iron, and the earth as brass. ²⁰ Your labour shall be spent in vain: the ground shall not bring forth her increase: nor the trees yield their fruit. ²¹ If you walk contrary to me, and will not hearken to me, I will bring seven times more plagues upon you for your sins. ²² And I will send in upon you the beasts of the field, to destroy you and your cattle, and make you few in number: and that your highways may be desolate. ²³ And if even so you will not amend, but will walk contrary to me: ²⁴ I also will walk contrary to you, and will strike you seven times for your sins. ²⁵ And I will bring in upon you the sword that shall avenge my covenant. And when you shall flee into the cities, I will send the pestilence in the midst of you. And you shall be delivered into the hands of your enemies, ²⁶ After I shall have broken the staff of your bread: so that ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and give it out by weight: and you shall eat, and shall not be filled, ²⁷ But if you will not for all this hearken to me, but will walk against me ²⁸ I will also go against you with opposite fury: and I will chastise you with seven plagues for your sins, ²⁹ So that you shall eat the flesh of your sons and of your daughters. ³⁰ I will destroy your high places, and break your idols. You shall fall among the ruins of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. ³¹ Insomuch that I will bring your cities to be a wilderness: and I will make your sanctuaries desolate: and will receive no more your sweet odours. ³² And I will destroy your land: and your enemies shall be astonished at it, when they shall be the inhabitants thereof. ³³ And I will scatter you among the Gentiles: and I will draw out the sword after you. And your land shall be desert, and your cities destroyed. ³⁴ Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths all the days of her desolation. They shall fall, when no man pursueth them. ³⁷ And they shall every one fall upon their brethren as fleeing from wars: none of you shall dare to resist your enemies. ³⁸ You shall perish among the Gentiles: and an enemy's land shall consume you. ³⁹ And if of them also some remain, they shall pine away in their iniquities, in the land of their enemies: and they shall be afflicted for the sins of their fathers, and their own. ⁴⁰ Until they confess their iniquities, and the iniquities of their ancestors, whereby they have transgressed against me, and walked contrary unto me. ⁴¹ Therefore I also will walk against them, and bring them into their enemies' land until their uncircumcised mind be ashamed. Then shall they pray for their sins. ⁴² And I will remember my covenant, that I made with Jacob, and Isaac, and Abraham. I will remember also the land: ⁴³ Which when she shall be left by them, shall enjoy her sabbaths, being desolate for them. But they shall pray for their sins, because they rejected my judgments, and despised my laws. ⁴⁴ And yet for all that when they were in the land of their enemies, I did not cast them off altogether. Neither did I so despise them that they should be quite consumed: and I should make void my covenant with them. For I am the Lord their God.

He hath given his sons to flight, and his daughters into captivity to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites. ³⁰ Their yoke is perished from Hesebon unto Dibon, they came weary to Nophe, and unto Medaba. ³¹ So Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorrhite. ³² And Moses sent some to take a view of Jazer: and they took the villages of it, and conquered the inhabitants. ³³ And they turned themselves, and went up by the way of Basan, and Og the king of Basan came against them with all his people, to fight in Edrai. ³⁴ And the Lord said to Moses: Fear him not, for I have delivered him and all his people, and his country into thy hand: and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, the inhabitant of Hesebon. ³⁵ So they slew him also with his sons, and all his people, not letting any one escape, and they possessed his land.

³ In the fortieth year, the eleventh month, the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel all that the Lord had commanded him to say to them:

⁴ And command thou the people, saying: You shall pass by the borders of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, and they will be afraid of you.

¹ If there rise in the midst of thee a prophet or one that saith he hath dreamed a dream, and he foretell a sign and a wonder, ² And that come to pass which he spoke, and he say to thee: Let us go and follow strange gods, which thou knowest not, and let us serve them: ³ Thou shalt not hear the words of that prophet or dreamer: for the Lord your God trieth you, that it may appear whether you love him with all your heart, and with all your soul, or not. ⁴ Follow the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and hear his voice: him you shall serve, and to him you shall cleave. ⁵ And that prophet or forger of dreams shall be slain: because he spoke to draw you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of bondage: to make thee go out of the way, which the Lord thy God commanded thee: and thou shalt take away the evil out of the midst of thee. ⁶ If thy brother the son of thy mother, or thy son, or daughter, or thy wife that is in thy bosom, or thy friend, whom thou lovest as thy own soul, would persuade thee secretly, saying: Let us go, and serve strange gods, which thou knowest not, nor thy fathers, ⁷ Of all the nations round about, that are near or afar off, from one end of the earth to the other, ⁸ Consent not to him, hear him not, neither let thy eye spare him to pity and conceal him, ⁹ But thou shalt presently put him to death. Let thy hand be first upon him, and afterwards the hands of all the people. ¹⁰ With stones shall he be stoned to death: because he would have withdrawn thee from the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage: ¹¹ That all Israel hearing may fear, and may do no more any thing like this. ¹² If in one of thy cities, which the Lord thy God shall give thee to dwell in, thou hear some say: ¹³ Children of Belial are gone out of the midst of thee, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, and have said: Let us go, and serve strange gods which you know not: ¹⁴ Inquire carefully and diligently, the truth of the thing by looking well into it, and if thou find that which is said to be certain, and that this abomination hath been really committed, ¹⁵ Thou shalt forthwith kill the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, and shalt destroy it and all things that are in it, even the cattle.

^{9 (4:6)} Baltassar, prince of the diviners, because I know that thou hast in thee the spirit of the holy gods, and that no secret is impossible to thee, tell me the visions of my dreams that I have seen, and the interpretation of them?

⁷ To thee, O Lord, justice: but to us confusion of face, as at this day to the men of Juda, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, to them that are near, and to them that are far off, in all the countries whither thou hast driven them, for their iniquities, by which they have sinned against thee.

¹¹ And all Israel have transgressed thy law, and have turned away from hearing thy voice, and the malediction, and the curse, which is written in the book of Moses, the servant of God, is fallen upon us, because we have sinned against him. ¹² And he hath confirmed his words which he spoke against us, and against our princes that judged us, that he would bring in upon us a great evil, such as never was under all the heaven, according to that which hath been done in Jerusalem. ¹³ As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: and we entreated not thy face, O Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and think on thy truth. ¹⁴ And the Lord hath watched upon the evil, and hath brought it upon us: the Lord, our God, is just in all his works which he hath done: for we have not hearkened to his voice.

⁴ You speak words of an unprofitable vision, and you shall make a covenant: and judgment shall spring up as bitterness in the furrows of the field.

⁸ How shall I deal with thee, O Ephraim, shall I protect thee, O Israel? how shall I make thee as Adama, shall I set thee as Seboim? my heart is turned within me, my repentance is stirred up. ⁹ I will not execute the fierceness of my wrath: I will not return to destroy Ephraim: because I am God, and not man: the holy one in the midst of thee, and I will not enter into the city.

¹⁶ Gather together the people, sanctify the church, assemble the ancients, gather together the little ones, and them that suck at the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth from his bed, and the bride out of her bridal chamber. ¹⁷ Between the porch and the altar the priests, the Lord's ministers, shall weep, and shall say: Spare, O Lord, spare thy people: and give not thy inheritane to reproach, that the heathens should rule over them. Why should they say among the nations: Where is their God?

⁷ For the Lord God doth nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets.

¹¹ I destroyed some of you, as God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrha, and you were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet you returned not to me, saith the Lord.

^{12 (6:13)} Can horses run upon the rocks, or can any one plough with buffles? for you have turned judgment into bitterness, and the fruit of justice into wormwood.

² The Lord is a jealous God, and a revenger: the Lord is a revenger, and hath wrath: the Lord taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and he is angry with his enemies.

¹⁸ Neither shall their silver and their gold be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord: all the land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy destruction of all them that dwell in the land.

⁹ Therefore as I live, saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel, Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrha, the dryness of thorns, and heaps of salt, and a desert even for ever: the remnant of my people shall make a spoil of them, and the residue of my nation shall possess them.

¹⁸ And you shall return, and shall see the difference between the just and the wicked: and between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not.

³¹ Be not solicitous therefore, saying: What shall we eat: or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed? ³² For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things.

¹⁰ Nor scrip for your journey, nor two coats, nor shoes, nor a staff; for the workman is worthy of his meat.

²⁷ All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him. ²⁸ Come to me all you that labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you. ²⁹ Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: And you shall find rest to your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

³⁵ That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.

⁵¹ And shall separate him and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

³² And all nations shall be gathered together before him: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats:

⁴¹ Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels.

⁴⁶ And these shall go into everlasting punishment: but the just, into life everlasting.

²⁸ But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.

³⁴ Salt is good. But if the salt shall lose its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? ³⁵ It is neither profitable for the land nor for the dunghill: but shall be cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

²⁹ And in the day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.

²³ But woe to them that are with child and give suck in those days: for there shall be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. ²⁴ And they shall fall by the edge of the sword and shall be led away captives into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down by the Gentiles till the times of the nations be fulfilled.

⁴³ Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word.

³⁸ That the saying of Isaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said: Lord, who hath believed our hearing? And to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? ³⁹ Therefore they could not believe, because Isaias said again: ⁴⁰ He hath blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart and be converted: and I should heal them.

¹⁵ I will not now call you servants: for the servant knoweth not what his lord doth. But I have called you friends. because all things, whatsoever I have heard of my Father, I have made known to you.

³¹ But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God: and that believing, you may have life in his name.

²² Jesus saith to him: So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee? Follow thou me.

⁷ But he said to them: It is not for you to know the time or moments, which the Father hath put in his own power:

³⁹ For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, whomsoever the Lord our God shall call.

²⁵ You are the children of the prophets and of the testament which God made to our fathers, saying to Abraham: And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.

²³ For I see thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity.

²⁶ Saying: Go to this people and say to them: With the ear you shall hear and shall not understand: and seeing you shall see and shall not perceive. ²⁷ For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears have they heard heavily and their eyes they have shut, lest perhaps they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted: and I should heal them.

²¹ Because that, when they knew God, they have not glorified him as God or given thanks: but became vain in their thoughts. And their foolish heart was darkened.

⁵ But according to thy hardness and impenitent heart, thou treasurest up to thyself wrath, against the day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God:

³² He that spared not even his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how hath he not also, with him, given us all things?

⁷ What then? That which Israel sought, he hath not obtained: but the election hath obtained it. And the rest have been blinded. ⁸ As it is written: God hath given them the spirit of insensibility; eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, until this present day. ⁹ And David saith: Let their table be made a snare and a trap and a stumbling block and a recompense unto them. ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see: and bow down their back always.

²¹ For if God hath not spared the natural branches, fear lest perhaps also he spare not thee.

³³ O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments, and how unsearchable his ways! ³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counsellor?

²⁵ Now to him that is able to establish you, according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret from eternity; ²⁶ (Which now is made manifest by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the precept of the eternal God, for the obedience of faith) known among all nations:

¹⁶ For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

¹⁴ For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the believing wife: and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the believing husband. Otherwise your children should be unclean: but now they are holy.

²⁵ And every one that striveth for the mastery refraineth himself from all things. And they indeed that they may receive a corruptible crown: but we an incorruptible one.

⁴ And all drank the same spiritual drink: (And they drank of the spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.)

²² Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? All things are lawful for me: but all things are not expedient.

¹⁵ But even until this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart.

⁵ And every height that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God: and bringing into captivity every understanding unto the obedience of Christ:

²⁸ There is neither Jew nor Greek: there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

¹⁷ This then I say and testify in the Lord: That henceforward you walk not as also the Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind: ¹⁸ Having their understanding darkened: being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their hearts.

⁶ Let no man deceive you with vain words. For because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the children of unbelief.

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, wherein is luxury: but be ye filled with the Holy Spirit,

¹¹ Where there is neither Gentile nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian nor Scythian, bond nor free. But Christ is all and in all.

¹⁰ And in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish: because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ^{11 (2:10)} Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying: ^{12 (2:11)} That all may be judged who have not believed the truth but have consented to iniquity.

⁵ Calling to mind that faith which is in thee unfeigned, which also dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois and in thy mother Eunice, and I am certain that in thee also.

²⁵ With modesty admonishing them that resist the truth: if peradventure God may give them repentance to know the truth;

¹⁶ All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice:

¹² Take heed, brethren, lest perhaps there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, to depart from the living God.

⁷ For if that former had been faultless, there should not indeed a place have been sought for a second. ⁸ For, finding fault with them, he saith: Behold the days shall come, saith the Lord: and I will perfect, unto the house of Israel and unto the house of Juda, a new testament: ⁹ Not according to the testament which I made to their fathers, on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt: because they continued not in my testament: and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

¹⁵ Looking diligently, lest any man be wanting to the grace of God: lest any root of bitterness springing up do hinder and by it many be defiled:

²⁹ For our God is a consuming fire.

²⁰ And may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great pastor of the sheep, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the blood of the everlasting testament, ²¹ Fit you in all goodness, that you may do his will; doing in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom is glory for ever and ever. Amen.

¹³ Let no man, when he is tempted, say that he is tempted by God. For God is not a tempter of evils: and he tempteth no man. ¹⁴ But every man is tempted by his own concupiscence, being drawn away and allured. ¹⁵ Then, when concupiscence hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin. But sin, when it is completed, begetteth death. ¹⁶ Do not err, therefore, my dearest brethren. ¹⁷ Every best gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change nor shadow of alteration.

⁴ For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but delivered them, drawn down by infernal ropes to the lower hell, unto torments, to be reserved unto judgment: ⁵ And spared not the original world, but preserved Noe, the eighth person, the preacher of justice, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly.

⁵ He that shall overcome shall thus be clothed in white garments: and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life. And I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth and the princes and tribunes and the rich and the strong and every bondman and every freeman hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of mountains:

²⁰ And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet who wrought signs before him, wherewith he seduced them who received the character of the beast and who adored his image. These two were cast alive into the pool of fire burning with brimstone.

¹² And I saw the dead, great and small, standing in the presence of the throne. And the books were opened: and another book was opened, which was the book of life. And the dead were judged by those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
