⁷ If one of thy brethren that dewlleth within thy gates of thy city in the land which the Lord thy God will give thee, come to poverty: thou shalt not harden thy heart, nor close thy hand,

⁹ Beware lest perhaps a wicked thought steal in upon thee, and thou say in thy heart: The seventh year of remission draweth nigh; and thou turn away thy eyes from thy poor brother, denying to lend him that which he asketh: lest he cry against thee to the Lord, and it become a sin unto thee.

¹³ He that stoppeth his ear against the cry of the poor, shall also cry himself, and shall not be heard.

³⁰ And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he paid the debt.

¹⁵ And if a brother or sister be naked and want daily food: ¹⁶ And one of you say to them: Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; yet give them not those things that are necessary for the body, what shall it profit?

¹⁶ In this we have known the charity of God, because he hath laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. ¹⁷ He that hath the substance of this world and shall see his brother in need and shall shut up his bowels from him: how doth the charity of God abide in him?
