¹ These things the Lord shewed to me: and behold a hook to draw down the fruit. ² And he said: What seest thou, Amos? And I said: A hook to draw down fruit. And the Lord said to me: The end is come upon my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more. ³ And the hinges of the temple shall screak in that day, saith the Lord God: many shall die: silence shall be cast in every place. ⁴ Hear this, you that crush the poor, and make the needy of the land to fail, ⁵ Saying: When will the month be over, and we shall sell our wares: and the sabbath, and we shall open the corn: that we may lessen the measure, and increase the sicle, and may convey in deceitful balances, ⁶ That we may possess the needy for money, and the poor for a pair of shoes, and may sell the refuse of the corn? ⁷ The Lord hath sworn against the pride of Jacob: surely I will never forget all their works. ⁸ Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein: and rise up altogether as a river, and be cast out, and run down as the river of Egypt? ⁹ And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that the sun shall go down at midday, and I will make the earth dark in the day of light: ¹⁰ And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation: and I will bring up sackcloth upon every back of yours, and baldness upon every head: and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the latter end thereof as a bitter day. ¹¹ Behold the days come, saith the Lord, and I will send forth a famine into the land: not a famine of bread, nor a thirst of water, but of hearing the word of the Lord. ¹² And they shall move from sea to sea, and from the north to the east: they shall go about seeking the word of the Lord, and shall not find it. ¹³ In that day the fair virgins, and the young men shall faint for thirst. ¹⁴ They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say: Thy God, O Dan, liveth: and the way of Bersabee liveth: and they shall fall, and shall rise no more.

²¹ And the Lord said to Moses: Stretch out thy hand towards heaven: and may there be darkness upon the land of Egypt so thick that it may be felt. ²² And Moses stretched forth his hand towards heaven: and there came horrible darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. ²³ No man saw his brother, nor moved himself out of the place where he was: but wheresoever the children of Israel dwelt, there was light.

¹⁶ Because the hand of the throne of the Lord, and the war of the Lord shall be against Amalec, from generation to generation.

⁸ Remember that thou keep holy the sabbath day. ⁹ Six days shalt thou labour, and shalt do all thy works. ¹⁰ But on the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work on it, thou nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy beast, nor the stranger that is within thy gates.

³ And Moses said to Aaron: This is what the Lord hath spoken. I will be sanctified in them that approach to me: and I will be glorified in the sight of all the people. And when Aaron heard this, he held his peace.

³⁶ Let the balance be just and the weights equal, the bushel just, and the sextary equal. I am the Lord your God, that brought you out of the land of Egypt.

³⁹ If thy brother constrained by poverty, sell himself to thee: thou shalt not oppress him with the service of bondservants. ⁴⁰ But he shall be as a hireling, and a sojourner: he shall work with thee until the year of the jubilee. ⁴¹ And afterwards he shall go out with his children: and shall return to his kindred and to the possession of his fathers. ⁴² For they are my servants, and I brought them out of the land of Egypt: let them not be sold as bondmen.

¹⁰ If at any time you shall have a banquet, and on your festival days, and on the first days of your months, you shall sound the trumpets over the holocausts, and the sacrifices of peace offerings, that they may be to you for a remembrance of your God. I am the Lord your God.

¹¹ And on the first day of the month you shall offer a holocaust to the Lord, two calves of the herd, one ram, and seven lambs of a year old, without blemish, ¹² And three tenths of flour tempered with oil in sacrifice for every calf: and two tenths of flour tempered with oil for every ram: ¹³ And the tenth of a tenth of flour tempered with oil in sacrifice for every lamb. It is a holocaust of most sweet odour and an offering by fire to the Lord. ¹⁴ And these shall be the libations of wine that are to be poured out for every victim: Half a hin for every calf, a third for a ram, and a fourth for a lamb. This shall be the holocaust for every month, as they succeed one another in the course of the year. ¹⁵ A buck goat also shall be offered to the Lord for a sin offering over and above the perpetual holocaust with its libations.

²¹ And your sin that you had committed, that is, the calf, I took, and burned it with fire, and breaking it into pieces, until it was as small as dust, I threw it into the torrent, which cometh down from the mountain.

¹⁴ And thou shalt make merry in thy festival time, thou, thy son, and thy daughter, thy manservant, and thy maidservant, the Levite also and the stranger, and the fatherless and the widow that are within thy gates.

¹³ Thou shalt not have divers weights in thy bag, a greater and a less: ¹⁴ Neither shall there be in thy house a greater bushel and a less. ¹⁵ Thou shalt have a just and a true weight, and thy bushel shall be equal and true: that thou mayest live a long time upon the land which the Lord thy God shall give thee. ¹⁶ For the Lord thy God abhorreth him that doth these things, and he hateth all injustice.

¹ And when thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God will give thee to possess, and hast conquered it, and dwellest in it: ² Thou shalt take the first of all thy fruits, and put them in a basket, and shalt go to the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, that his name may be invocated there: ³ And thou shalt go to the priest that shall be in those days, and say to him: I profess this day before the Lord thy God, that I am come into the land, for which he swore to our fathers, that he would give it us. ⁴ And the priest taking the basket at thy hand, shall set it before the altar of the Lord thy God:

²⁵ Without, the sword shall lay them waste, and terror within, both the young man and the virgin, the sucking child with the man in years.

¹¹ Bless, O Lord, his strength, and receive the works of his hands. Strike the backs of his enemies, and let not them that hate him rise.

²⁶ There is no other god like the God of the rightest: he that is mounted upon the heaven is thy helper. By his magnificence the clouds run hither and thither. ²⁷ His dwelling is above, and underneath are the everlasting arms: he shall cast out the enemy from before thee, and shall say: Be thou brought to nought. ²⁸ Israel shall dwell in safety, and alone. The eye of Jacob in a land of corn and wine, and the heavens shall be misty with dew. ²⁹ Blessed art thou, Israel: who is like to thee, O people, that art saved by the Lord? the shield of thy help, and the sword of thy glory: thy enemies shall deny thee, and thou shalt tread upon their necks.

¹ Now the child Samuel ministered to the Lord before Heli, and the word of the Lord was precious in those days, there was no manifest vision.

² Thus saith the Lord of hosts: I have reckoned up all that Amalec hath done to Israel: how he opposed them in the way when they came up out of Egypt. ³ Now therefore go, and smite Amalec, and utterly destroy all that he hath: spare him not, nor covet anything that is his: but slay both man and woman, child and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal: and behold he had a feast in his house, like the feast of a king: and Nabal's heart was merry, for he was very drunk: and she told him nothing less or more until morning. ³⁷ But early in the morning, when Nabal had digested his wine, his wife told him these words, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And after ten days had passed, the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.

⁶ And he consulted the Lord, and he answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by priests, nor by prophets.

¹⁵ And Samuel said to Saul: Why hast thou disturbed my rest, that I should be brought up? And Saul said: I am in great distress: for the Philistines fight against me, and God is departed from me, and would not hear me, neither by the hand of prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayst shew me what I shall do.

²⁸ And Absalom had commanded his servants, saying: Take notice when Ammon shall be drunk with wine, and when I shall say to you: Strike him, and kill him, fear not: for it is I that command you: take courage, and be valiant men. ²⁹ And the servants of Absalom did to Ammon as Absalom had commanded them. And all the king's sons arose and got up every man upon his mule, and fled. ³⁰ And while they were yet in the way, a rumour came to David, saying: Absalom hath slain all the king's sons, and there is not one them left. ³¹ Then the king rose up, and rent his garments: and fell upon the ground, and all his servants, that stood about him, rent their garments.

¹ And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold Siba the servant of Miphiboseth came to meet him with two asses, laden with two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred bunches of raisins, a hundred cakes of figs, and a vessel of wine. ² And the king said to Siba: What mean these things? And Siba answered: The asses are for the king's household to sit on: and the loaves and the figs for thy servants to eat, and the wine to drink if any man be faint in the desert.

²⁸ And finding out a device, he made two golden calves, and said to them: Go ye up no more to Jerusalem: Behold thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt. ²⁹ And he set the one in Bethel, and the other in Dan:

³² And he appointed a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, after the manner of the feast that was celebrated in Juda. And going up to the altar, he did in like manner in Bethel, to sacrifice to the calves, which he had made: and he placed in Bethel priests of the high places, which he had made.

²² And hast returned, and eaten bread, and drunk water in the place wherein he commanded thee that thou shouldst not eat bread, nor drink water, thy dead body shall not be brought into the sepulchre of thy fathers. ²³ And when he had eaten and drunk, he saddled his ass for the prophet, whom he had brought back. ²⁴ And when he was gone, a lion found him in the way, and killed him, and his body was cast in the way: and the ass stood by him, and the lion stood by the dead body. ²⁵ And behold, men passing by, saw the dead body cast in the way, and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city, wherein that old prophet dwelt. ²⁶ And when that prophet, who had brought him back out of the way, heard of it, he said: It is the man of God, that was disobedient to the mouth of the Lord, and the Lord hath delivered him to the lion, and he hath torn him, and killed him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke to him. ²⁷ And he said to his sons: Saddle me an ass. And when they had saddled it, ²⁸ And he was gone, he found the dead body cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcass: the lion had not eaten of the dead body, nor hurt the ass. ²⁹ And the prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and going back brought it into the city of the old prophet, to mourn for him. ³⁰ And he laid his dead body in his own sepulchre: and they mourned over him, saying: Alas! alas, my brother. ³¹ And when they had mourned over him, he said to his sons: When I am dead, bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried: lay my bones beside his bones. ³² For assuredly the word shall come to pass which he hath foretold in the word of the Lord, against the altar that is in Bethel: and against all the temples of the high places, that are in the cities of Samaria. ³³ After these words, Jeroboam came not back from his wicked way: but on the contrary, he made of the meanest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he filled his hand, and he was made a priest of the high places. ³⁴ And for this cause did the house of Jeroboam sin, and was cut off, and destroyed from the face of the earth.

¹⁶ And the Lord shall give up Israel for the sins of Jeroboam, who hath sinned, and made Israel to sin.

²⁴ And he bought the hill of Samaria of Semer, for two talents of silver: and he built upon it, and he called the city which he built Samaria, after the name of Semer, the owner of the hill.

¹⁹ And he added and said: Hear thou, therefore, the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing by him on the right hand and on the left:

²³ And he said to her: Why dost thou go to him? to day is neither new moon nor sabbath. She answered: I will go.

²⁹ But yet he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who made Israel to sin, nor did he forsake the golden calves that were in Bethel, and Dan.

³ And many days shall pass in Israel, without the true God, and without a priest a teacher, and without the law.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused the prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, and there was no remedy.

¹ Now there was a great cry of the people, and of their wives against their brethren the Jews. ² And there were some that said: Our sons and our daughters are very many: let us take up corn for the price of them, and let us eat and live. ³ And there were some that said: Let us mortgage our lands, and our vineyards, and our houses, and let us take corn because of the famine. ⁴ And others said: Let us borrow money for the king's tribute, and let us give up our fields and vineyards: ⁵ And now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren: and our children as their children. Behold we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters, and some of our daughters are bondwomen already, neither have we wherewith to redeem them, and our fields and our vineyards other men possess.

⁸ And I said to them: We, as you know, have redeemed according to our ability our brethren the Jews, that were sold to the Gentiles: and will you then sell your brethren, for us to redeem them? And they held their peace, and found not what to answer.

¹⁵ In those days I saw in Juda some treading the presses on the sabbath, and carrying sheaves, and lading asses with wine, and grapes, and figs, and all manner of burthens, and bringing them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. And I charged them that they should sell on a day on which it was lawful to sell. ¹⁶ Some Tyrians also dwelt there, who brought fish, and all manner of wares: and they sold them on the sabbaths to the children of Juda in Jerusalem. ¹⁷ And I rebuked the chief men of Juda, and said to them: What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day: ¹⁸ Did not our fathers do these things, and our God brought all this evil upon us, and upon this city? And you bring more wrath upon Israel by violating the sabbath. ¹⁹ And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem were at rest on the sabbath day, I spoke: and they shut the gates, and I commanded that they should not open them till after the sabbath: and I set some of my servants at the gates, that none should bring in burthens on the sabbath day. ²⁰ So the merchants, and they that sold all kinds of wares, stayed without Jerusalem, once or twice. ²¹ And I charged them, and I said to them: Why stay you before the wall? if you do so another time, I will lay hands on you. And from that time they came no more on the sabbath.

⁵ Let darkness, and the shadow of death, cover it, let a mist overspread it, and let it be wrapped up in bitterness.

¹⁴ They shall meet with darkness in the day, and grope at noonday as in the night.

²³ May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him.

¹¹ For he hath said in his heart: God hath forgotten, he hath turned away his face, not to see to the end.

^{5 (12:6)} By reason of the misery of the needy, and the groans of the poor, now will I arise, saith the Lord. I will set him in safety: I will deal confidently in his regard.

⁴ Shall not all they know that work iniquity, who devour my people as they eat bread?

¹³ Offer sacrifice no more in vain: incense is an abomination to me. The new moons, and the sabbaths and other festivals I will not abide, your assemblies are wicked.

⁶ And I will make it desolate: it shall not be pruned, and it shall not be digged: but briers and thorns shall come up: and I will command the clouds to rain no rain upon it.

²⁵ Therefore is the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched out his hand upon them, and struck them: and the mountains were troubles, and their carcasses became as dung in the midst of the streets. For after this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

⁷ Therefore behold the Lord will bring upon them the waters of the river strong and many, the king of the Assyrians, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and shall overflow all his banks. ⁸ And shall pass through Juda, overflowing, and going over shall reach even to the neck. ³ Therefore are my loins filled with pain, anguish hath taken hold of me, as the anguish of a woman in labour: I fell down at the hearing of it, I was troubled at the seeing of it. ⁴ My heart failed, darkness amazed me: Babylon my beloved is become a wonder to me.

¹² And the Lord, the God of hosts, in that day shall call to weeping, and to mourning, to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth: ¹³ And behold joy and gladness, killing calves, and slaying rams, eating flesh, and drinking wine: Let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die. ¹⁴ And the voice of the Lord of hosts was revealed in my ears: Surely this iniquity shall not be forgiven you till you die, saith the Lord God of hosts.

¹⁹ With breaking shall the earth be broken, with crushing shall the earth be crushed, with trembling shall the earth be moved. ²⁰ With shaking shall the earth be shaken as a drunken man, and shall be removed as the tent of one night: and the iniquity thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again.

⁴ And the fading tower the glory of his joy, who is on the head of the fat valley, shall be as a hasty fruit before the ripeness of autumn: which when he that seeth it shall behold, as soon he taketh it in his hand, he will eat it up.

¹⁴ Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, who rule over my people that is in Jerusalem.

⁹ Be astonished, and wonder, waver, and stagger: be drunk, and not with wine: stagger, and not with drunkenness. ¹⁰ For the Lord hath mingled for you the spirit of a deep sleep, he will shut up your eyes, he will cover your prophets and princes, that see visions.

²⁰ And the Lord will give you spare bread, and short water: and will not cause thy teacher to flee away from thee any more, and thy eyes shall see thy teacher. ²¹ And thy ears shall hear the word of one admonishing thee behind thy back: This is the way, walk ye in it: and go not aside neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

⁶ For the fool will speak foolish things, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and speak to the Lord deceitfully, and to make empty the soul of the hungry, and take away drink from the thirsty. ⁷ The vessels of the deceitful are most wicked: for he hath framed devices to destroy the meek, with lying words, when the poor man speaketh judgment.

³⁶ And the angel of the Lord went out and slew in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand. And they arose in the morning, and behold they were all dead corpses.

³⁰ You shall faint, and labour, and young men shall fall by infirmity.

¹⁷ The needy and the poor seek for waters, and there are none: their tongue hath been dry with thirst. I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. ¹⁸ I will open rivers in the high hills, and fountains in the midst of the plains: I will turn the desert into pools of waters, and the impassable land into streams of waters. ¹⁹ I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, and the thorn, and the myrtle, and the olive tree: I will set in the desert the fir tree, the elm, and the box tree together: ²⁰ That they may see and know, and consider, and understand together that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

¹⁷ Who brought forth the chariot and the horse, the army and the strong: they lay down to sleep together, and they shall not rise again: they are broken as flax, and are extinct.

²⁵ I am, I am he that blot out thy iniquities for my own sake, and I will not remember thy sins.

¹³ If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy own will in my holy day, and call the sabbath delightful, and the holy of the Lord glorious, and glorify him, while thou dost not thy own ways, and thy own will is not found, to speak a word:

⁹ Therefore is judgment far from us, and justice shall not overtake us. We looked for light, and behold darkness: brightness, and we have walked in the dark. ¹⁰ We have groped for the wall, and like the blind we have groped as if we had no eyes: we have stumbled at noonday as in darkness, we are in dark places, as dead men.

¹¹ And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: What seest thou, Jeremias? And I said: I see a rod watching. ¹² And the Lord said to me: Thou hast seen well: for I will watch over my word to perform it. ¹³ And the word of the Lord came to me a second time saying: What seest thou? And I said: I see a boiling caldron, and the face thereof from the face of the north. ¹⁴ And the Lord said to me: From the north shall an evil break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.

²⁴ I looked upon the mountains, and behold they trembled: and all the hills were troubled. ²⁵ I beheld, and lo there was no man: and all the birds of the air were gone. ²⁶ I looked, and behold Carmel was a wilderness: and all its cities were destroyed at the presence of the Lord, and at the presence of the wrath of his indignation.

²¹ Hear, O foolish people, and without understanding: who have eyes, and see not: and ears, and hear not.

³¹ The prophets prophesied falsehood, and the priests clapped their hands: and my people loved such things: what then shall be done in the end thereof?

²⁶ Gird thee with sackcloth, O daughter of my people, and sprinkle thee with ashes: make thee mourning as for an only son, a bitter lamentation, because the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.

²¹ For death is come up through our windows, it is entered into our houses to destroy the children from without, the young men from the streets. ²² Speak: Thus saith the Lord: Even the carcass of man shall fall as dung upon the face of the country, and as grass behind the back of the mower, and there is none to gather it.

⁴ How long shall the land mourn, and the herb of every field wither for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? The beasts and the birds are consumed: because they have said: He shall not see our last end.

⁹ She that hath borne seven is become weak, her soul hath fainted away: her sun is gone down, while it was yet day: she is confounded, and ashamed: and the residue of them I will give up to the sword in the sight of their enemies, saith the Lord.

¹ The sin of Juda is written with a pen of iron, with the point of a diamond, it is graven upon the table of their heart, upon the horns of their altars.

¹⁸ Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda: They shall not mourn for him, Alas, my brother, and, Alas, sister: they shall not lament for him, Alas, my lord, or, Alas, the noble one.

¹ The Lord shewed me: and behold two baskets full of figs, set before the temple of the Lord: after that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias the son of Joakim the king of Juda, and his chief men, and the craftsmen, and engravers of Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon. ² One basket had very good figs, like the figs of the first season: and the other basket had very bad figs, which could not be eaten, because they were bad. ³ And the Lord said to me: What seest thou, Jeremias? And I said: Figs, the good figs, very good: and the bad figs, very bad, which cannot be eaten because they are bad.

²⁷ And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Drink ye, and be drunken, and vomit: and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword, which I shall send among you.

⁸ Egypt riseth up like a flood, and the waves thereof shall be moved as rivers, and he shall say: I will go up and will cover the earth: I will destroy the city, and its inhabitants.

¹⁸ Come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst, O dwelling of the daughter of Dibon: because the spoiler of Moab is come up to thee, he hath destroyed thy bulwarks.

³⁷ For every head shall be bald, and every beard shall be shaven: all hands shall be tied together, and upon every back there shall be haircloth.

⁶⁴ And thou shalt say: Thus shall Babylon sink, and she shall not rise up from the affliction that I will bring upon her, and she shall be utterly destroyed. Thus far are the words of Jeremias.

¹⁸ Sade. The Lord is just, for I have provoked his mouth to wrath: hear, I pray you, all ye people, and see my sorrow: my virgins, and my young men are gone into captivity.

² And thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God to the land of Israel: The end is come, the end is come upon the four quarters of the land. ³ Now is an end come upon thee, and I will send my wrath upon thee, and I will judge thee according to thy ways: and I will set all thy abominations against thee.

⁶ An end is come, the end is come, it hath awaked against thee: behold it is come.

²⁶ Trouble shall come upon trouble, and rumour upon rumour, and they shall seek a vision of the prophet, and the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients.

⁶ And he said to me: Son of man, dost thou see, thinkest thou, what these are doing, the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should depart far off from my sanctuary? and turn thee yet again and thou shalt see greater abominations.

¹² And he said to me: Surely thou seest, O son of man, what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every one in private in his chamber: for they say: The Lord seeth us not, the Lord hath forsaken the earth.

¹⁷ And he said to me: Surely thou hast seen, O son of man: is this a light thing to the house of Juda, that they should commit these abominations which they have committed here: because they have filled the land with iniquity, and have turned to provoke me to anger? and behold they put a branch to their nose.

²³ Say to them therefore: Thus saith the Lord God: I will make this proverb to cease, neither shall it be any more a common saying in Israel: and tell them that the days are at hand, and the effect of every vision.

³ Son of man, speak to the ancients of Israel and say to them: Thus saith the Lord God: Are you come to inquire of me? As I live, I will not answer you, saith the Lord God.

³¹ And you defile yourselves with all your idols unto this day, in the offering of your gifts, when you make your children pass through the fire: and shall I answer you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord God, I will not answer you.

³⁰ And they shall mourn over thee with a loud voice and shall cry bitterly: and they shall cast up dust upon their heads and shall be sprinkled with ashes. ³¹ And they shall shave themselves bald for thee, and shall be girded with haircloth: and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of soul, with most bitter weeping.

⁸ Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will bring the sword upon thee: and cut off man and beast out of thee.

⁴ But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time appointed: many shall pass over, and knowledge shall be manifold.

³ Lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born: and I will make her as a wilderness, and will set her as a land that none can pass through and will kill her with drought.

⁴ You that sleep upon beds of ivory, and are wanton on your couches: that eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the herd; ⁵ You that sing to the sound of the psaltery: they have thought themselves to have instruments of music like David; ⁶ That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best ointments: and they are not concerned for the affliction of Joseph. ⁷ Wherefore now they shall go captive at the head of them that go into captivity: and the faction of the luxurious ones shall be taken away. ⁸ The Lord God hath sworn by his own soul, saith the Lord the God of hosts: I detest the pride of Jacob, and I hate his houses, and I will deliver up the city with the inhabitants thereof. ⁹ And if there remain ten men in one house, they also shall die. ¹⁰ And a man's kinsman shall take him up, and shall burn him, that he may carry the bones out of the house; and he shall say to him that is in the inner rooms of the house: Is there yet any with thee? ^(6:11) And he shall answer: There is an end. And he shall say to him: Hold thy peace, and mention not the name of the Lord.

³ For behold the Lord will come forth out of his place: and he will come down, and will tread upon the high places of the earth. ⁴ And the mountains shall be melted under him: and the valleys shall be cleft, as wax before the fire, and as waters that run down a steep place. ⁵ For the wickedness of Jacob is all this, and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the wickedness of Jacob? is it not Samaria? and what are the high places of Juda? are they not Jerusalem?

⁶ Therefore night shall be to you instead of vision, and darkness to you instead of divination: and the sun shall go down upon the prophets, and the day shall be darkened over them.

¹⁰ As yet there is a fire in the house of the wicked, the treasures of iniquity, and a scant measure full of wrath. ¹¹ Shall I justify wicked balances, and the deceitful weights of the bag?

¹ Woe is me, for I am become as one that gleaneth in autumn the grapes of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat, my soul desired the first ripe figs.

⁵ The mountains tremble at him, and the hills are made desolate: and the earth hath quaked at his presence, and the world, and all that dwell therein. ⁶ Who can stand before the face of his indignation? and who shall resist in the fierceness of his anger? his indignation is poured out like fire: and the rocks are melted by him.

¹⁰ For as thorns embrace one another: so while they are feasting and drinking together, they shall be consumed as stubble that is fully dry.

³ And of the shining sword, and of thc glittering spear, and of a multitude slain, and of a grievous destruction: and there is no end of carcasses, and they shall fall down on their dead bodies.

⁵ Death shall go before his face. And the devil shall go forth before his feet. ⁶ He stood and measured the earth. He beheld, and melted the nations: and the ancient mountains were crushed to pieces. The hills of the world were bowed down by the journeys of his eternity. ⁷ I saw the tents of Ethiopia for their iniquity, the curtains of the land of Madian shall be troubled. ⁸ Wast thou angry, O Lord, with the rivers? or was thy wrath upon the rivers? or thy indignation in the sea? Who will ride upon thy horses: and thy chariots are salvation.

⁵ And them that worship the host of heaven upon the tops of houses, and them that adore, and swear by the Lord, and swear by Melchom.

² And he said to me: What seest thou? And I said: I see a volume flying: the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.

⁵ And the angel went forth that spoke in me, and he said to me: Lift up thy eyes, and see what this is, that goeth forth. ⁶ And I said: What is it? And he said: This is a vessel going forth. And he said: This is their eye in all the earth.

¹⁷ For what is the good thing of him, and what is his beautiful thing, but the corn of the elect, and wine springing forth virgins?

¹ Open thy gates, O Libanus, and let fire devour thy cedars. ² Howl, thou fir tree, for the cedar is fallen, for the mighty are laid waste: howl, ye oaks of Basan, because the fenced forest is cut down. ³ The voice of the howling of the shepherds, because their glory is laid waste: the voice of the roaring of the lions, because the pride of the Jordan is spoiled.

¹⁰ And I will pour out upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace, and of prayers: and they shall look upon me, whom they have pierced: and they shall mourn for him as one mourneth for an only son, and they shall grieve over him, as the manner is to grieve for the death of the firstborn.

³⁶ And seeing the multitudes, he had compassion on them: because they were distressed, and lying like sheep that have no shepherd.

²⁵ At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones. ²⁶ Yea, Father: for so hath it seemed good in thy sight. ²⁷ All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.

³⁰ He that is not with me, is against me: and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth.

¹³ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for you yourselves do not enter in and those that are going in, you suffer not to enter.

²⁹ And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give her light and the stars shall fall from heaven and the powers of heaven shall be moved. ³⁰ And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven. And then shall all tribes of the earth mourn: and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with much power and majesty.

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour, there was darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour.

³² A light to the revelation of the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel.

¹² And when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother: and she was a widow. And a great multitude of the city was with her. ¹³ Whom when the Lord had seen, being moved with mercy towards her, he said to her: Weep not.

²³ Now at that time there arose no small disturbance about the way of the Lord.

¹⁴ But this I confess to thee that according to the way which they call a heresy, so do I serve the Father and my God, believing all things which are written in the law and the prophets:

⁶ For the wisdom of the flesh is death: but the wisdom of the spirit is life and peace. ⁷ Because the wisdom of the flesh is an enemy to God. For it is not subject to the law of God: neither can it be.

³¹ But Israel, by following after the law of justice, is not come unto the law of justice. ³² Why so? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were of works. For they stumbled at the stumblingstone. ³³ As it is written: Behold I lay in Sion a stumbling-stone and a rock of scandal. And whosoever believeth in him shall not be confounded.

⁷ What then? That which Israel sought, he hath not obtained: but the election hath obtained it. And the rest have been blinded. ⁸ As it is written: God hath given them the spirit of insensibility; eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, until this present day. ⁹ And David saith: Let their table be made a snare and a trap and a stumbling block and a recompense unto them. ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see: and bow down their back always.

¹⁶ Let no man therefore judge you in meat or in drink or in respect of a festival day or of the new moon or of the sabbaths,

⁶ For of these sort are they who creep into houses and lead captive silly women laden with sins, who are led away with divers desires: ⁷ Ever learning, and never attaining to the knowledge of the truth.

⁶ You have condemned and put to death the Just One: and he resisted you not.

¹² And I saw, when he had opened the sixth seal: and behold there was a great earthquake. And the sun became black as sackcloth of hair: and the whole moon became as blood.
