²⁸ Having heard these things, they were full of anger and cried out, saying: Great is Diana of the Ephesians!

³ And when the Azotians arose early the next day, behold Dagon lay upon his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord: and they took Dagon, and set him again in his place. ⁴ And the next day again, when they rose in the morning, they found Dagon lying upon his face on the earth before the ark of the Lord: and the head of Dagon, and both the palms of his hands, were cut off upon the threshold: ⁵ And only the stump of Dagon remained in its place. For this cause neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that go into the temple, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Azotus unto this day.

²⁶ And they took the bullock, which he gave them, and dressed it: and they called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying: O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered: and they leaped over the altar that they had made. ²⁷ And when it was now noon, Elias jested at them, saying: Cry with a louder voice: for he is a god; and perhaps he is talking, or is in an inn, or on a journey; or perhaps he is asleep, and must be awaked. ²⁸ So they cried with a loud voice, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till they were all covered with blood. ²⁹ And after midday was past, and while they were prophesying, the time was come of offering sacrifice, and there was no voice heard, nor did any one answer, nor regard them as they prayed.

² The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, against the Lord, and against his Christ.

⁵ The islands saw it, and feared, the ends of the earth were astonished, they drew near, and came. ⁶ Every one shall help his neighbour, and shall say to his brother: Be of good courage. ⁷ The coppersmith striking with the hammer encouraged him that forged at that time, saying: It is ready for soldering: and he strengthened it with nails, that it should not be moved.

³⁸ A drought upon her waters, and they shall be dried up: because it is a land of idols, and they glory in monstrous things.

⁵⁴ Now hearing these things, they were cut to the heart: and they gnashed with their teeth at him.

¹⁹ But her masters, seeing that the hope of their gain was gone, apprehending Paul and Silas, brought them into the market place to the rulers. ²⁰ And presenting them to the magistrates, they said: These men disturb our city, being Jews: ²¹ And preach a fashion which it is not lawful for us to receive nor observe, being Romans. ²² And the people ran together against them: and the magistrates, rending off their clothes, commanded them to be beaten with rods. ²³ And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the gaoler to keep them diligently. ²⁴ Who having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison and made their feet fast in the stocks.

¹⁹ And he came to Ephesus and left them there. But he himself, entering into the synagogue, disputed with the Jews.

³⁴ But as soon as they perceived him to be a Jew, all with one voice, for the space of about two, hours, cried out: Great is Diana of the Ephesians! ³⁵ And when the town clerk had appeased the multitudes, he said: Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great Diana and of Jupiter's offspring?

²⁸ Men of Israel, help: This is the man that teacheth all men every where against the people and the law and this place; and moreover hath brought in Gentiles into the temple and hath violated this holy place. ²⁹ (For they had seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him. whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.) ³⁰ And he whole city was in an uproar: and the people ran together. And taking Paul, they drew him out of the temple: and immediately the doors were shut. ³¹ And as they went about to kill him, it was told the tribune of the band that all Jerusalem was in confusion.

¹² Therefore, rejoice, O heavens, and you that dwell therein. Woe to the earth and to the sea, because the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, knowing that he hath but a short time.

⁴ And they adored the dragon which gave power to the beast. And they adored the beast, saying: Who is like to the beast? And who shall be able to fight with him?

¹³ These have one design: and their strength and power they shall deliver to the beast.
