²⁰ And presenting them to the magistrates, they said: These men disturb our city, being Jews:

¹⁷ And when he had seen him, he said: Art thou he that troublest Israel? ¹⁸ And he said: I have not troubled Israel, but thou and thy father's house, who have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and have followed Baalim.

¹² Be it known to the king, that the Jews, who came up from thee to us, are come to Jerusalem a rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, setting up the ramparts thereof and repairing the walls. ¹³ And now be it known to the king, that if this city be built up, and the walls thereof repaired, they will not pay tribute nor toll, nor yearly revenues, and this loss will fall upon the kings. ¹⁴ But we remembering the salt that we have eaten in the palace, and because we count it a crime to see the king wronged, have therefore sent and certified the king, ¹⁵ That search may be made in the books of the histories of thy fathers, and thou shalt find written in the records: and shalt know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to the kings and provinces, and that wars were raised therein of old time: for which cause also the city was destroyed.

⁸ And Aman said to king Assuerus: There is a people scattered through all the provinces of thy kingdom, and separated one from another, that use new laws and ceremonies, and moreover despise the king's ordinances: and thou knowest very well that it is not expedient for thy kingdom that they should grow insolent by impunity. ⁹ If it please thee, decree that they may be destroyed, and I will pay ten thousand talents to thy treasurers.

³ And king Herod hearing this, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

¹⁸ If the world hate you, know ye that it hath hated me before you. ¹⁹ If you had been of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. ²⁰ Remember my word that I said to you: The servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they have kept my word, they will keep yours also.

⁶ And not finding them, they drew Jason and certain brethren to the rulers of the city, crying: They that set the city in an uproar are come hither also: ⁷ Whom Jason hath received. And these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus. ⁸ And they stirred up the people: and the rulers of the city, hearing these things,

² And finding a certain Jew, named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with Priscilla his wife (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome), he came to them.

³⁴ But as soon as they perceived him to be a Jew, all with one voice, for the space of about two, hours, cried out: Great is Diana of the Ephesians!

²² But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that it is every where contradicted.

² And be not conformed to this world: but be reformed in the newness of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and the acceptable and the perfect will of God.

⁴ Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world becometh an enemy of God.
