Kill and eat. ⁸ And I said: Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath ever entered into my mouth. ⁹ And the voice answered again from heaven: What God hath made clean, do not thou call common. ¹⁰ And this was done three times. And all were taken up again into heaven. ¹¹ And behold, immediately there were three men come to the house wherein I was, sent to me from Caesarea. ¹² And the Spirit said to me that I should go with them, nothing doubting. And these six brethren went with me also: and we entered into the man's house. ¹³ And he told us how he had seen an angel in his house, standing and saying to him: Send to Joppe and call hither Simon, who is surnamed Peter, ¹⁴ Who shall speak to thee words whereby thou shalt be saved, and all thy house. ¹⁵ And when I had begun to speak, the Holy Ghost fell upon them, as upon us also in the beginning. ¹⁶ And I remembered the word of the Lord, how that he said: John indeed baptized with water but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. ¹⁷ If then God gave them the same grace as to us also who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ: who was I, that could withstand God? ¹⁸ Having heard these things, they held their peace and glorified God, saying: God then hath also to the Gentiles given repentance, unto life. ¹⁹ Now they who had been dispersed by the persecution that arose on occasion of Stephen went about as far as Phenice and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none, but to the Jews only. ²⁰ But some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they were entered into Antioch, spoke also to the Greeks, preaching the Lord Jesus. ²¹ And the hand of he Lord was with them: and a great number believing, were converted to the Lord. ²² And the tidings came to the ears of the church that was at Jerusalem, touching these things: and they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch. ²³ Who, when he was come and had seen the grace of God, rejoiced. And he exhorted them all with purpose of heart to continue in the Lord. ²⁴ For he was a good man and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. And a great multitude was added to the Lord. ²⁵ And Barnabas went to Tarsus to seek Saul: whom, when he had found, he brought to Antioch. ²⁶ And they conversed there in the church a whole year: and they taught a great multitude, so that at Antioch the disciples were first named Christians. ²⁷ And in these days there came prophets from Jerusalem to Antioch. ²⁸ And one of them named Agabus, rising up, signified by the Spirit that there should be a great famine over the whole world, which came to pass under Claudius. ²⁹ And the disciples, every man according to his ability, purposed to send relief to the brethren who dwelt in Judea. ³⁰ Which also they did, sending it to the ancients, by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and between thy seed after thee in their generations, by a perpetual covenant: to be a God to thee, and to thy seed after thee.

¹⁹ For I know that he will command his children, and his household after him, to keep the way of the Lord, and do judgment and justice: that for Abraham's sake, the Lord may bring to effect all the things he hath spoken unto him.

³⁰ After which shall follow other seven years of so great scarcity, that all the abundance before shall be forgotten: for the famine shall consume all the land, ³¹ And the greatness of the scarcity shall destroy the greatness of the plenty.

³⁸ And he said to them: Can we find such another man, that is full of the spirit of God?

¹⁰ The sceptre shall not be taken away from Juda, nor a ruler from his thigh, till he come that is to be sent, and he shall be the expectation of nations.

¹⁴ The Lord being angry at Moses, said: Aaron the Levite is thy brother, I know that he is eloquent: behold he cometh forth to meet thee, and seeing thee, shall be glad at heart.

²⁷ And the Lord said to Aaron: Go into the desert to meet Moses. And he went forth to meet him in the mountain of God, and kissed him.

¹⁰ And that you may have knowledge to discern between holy and unholy, between unclean and clean:

¹⁹ Aaron answered: This day hath been offered the victim for sin, and the holocaust before the Lord: and to me what thou seest has happened. How could I eat it, or please the Lord in the ceremonies, having a sorrowful heart? ²⁰ Which when Moses had heard he was satisfied.

⁴⁷ That you may know the differences of the clean, and unclean, and know what you ought to eat, and what to refuse.

¹⁰ And Balac being angry against Balaam, clapped his hands together and said: I called thee to curse my enemies, and thou on the contrary hast blessed them three times.

²¹ And the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses answered the princes of the embassage of Israel: ²² The Lord the most mighty God, the Lord the most mighty God, he knoweth, and Israel also shall understand: If with the design of transgression we have set up this altar, let him not save us, but punish us immediately: ²³ And if we did it with that mind, that we might lay upon it holocausts, and sacrifice, and victims of peace offerings, let him require and judge: ²⁴ And not rather with this thought and design, that we should say: To morrow your children will say to our children: What have you to do with the Lord the God of Israel? ²⁵ The Lord hath put the river Jordan for a border between us and you, O ye children of Ruben, and ye children of Gad: and therefore you have no part in the Lord. And by this occasion your children shall turn away our children from the fear of the Lord. We therefore thought it best, ²⁶ And said: Let us build us an altar, not for holocausts, nor to offer victims, ²⁷ But for a testimony between us and you, and our posterity and yours, that we may serve the Lord, and that we may have a right to offer both holocausts, and victims and sacrifices of peace offerings: and that your children to morrow may not say to our children: You have no part in the Lord. ²⁸ And if they will say so, they shall answer them: Behold the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for holocausts, nor for sacrifice, but for a testimony between us and you. ²⁹ God keep us from any such wickedness that we should revolt from the Lord, and leave off following his steps, by building an altar to offer holocausts, and sacrifices, and victims, beside the altar of the Lord our God, which is erected before his tabernacle. ³⁰ And when Phinees the priest, and the princes of the embassage, who were with him, had heard this, they were satisfied: and they admitted most willingly the words of the children of Ruben, and Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses,

And when he was come to the gate of the city, he saw the widow woman gathering sticks, and he called her, and said to her: Give me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. ¹¹ And when she was going to fetch it, he called after her, saying: Bring me also, I beseech thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand. ¹² And she answered: As the Lord thy God liveth, I have no bread, but only a handful of meal in a pot, and a little oil in a cruise: behold I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it, for me and my son, that we may eat it and die. ¹³ And Elias said to her: Fear not; but go, and do as thou hast said but first make for me of the same meal a little hearth cake, and bring it to me, and after make for thyself and thy son. ¹⁴ For thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: The pot of meal shall not waste, nor the cruise of oil be diminished, until the day wherein the Lord will give rain upon the face of the earth. ¹⁵ She went, and did according to the word of Elias: and he ate, and she, and her house: and from that day ¹⁶ The pot of meal wasted not, and the cruise of oil was not diminished according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke in the hand of Elias.

¹ And Eliseus spoke to the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying: Arise, and go thou, and thy household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst find: for the Lord hath called a famine, and it shall come upon the land seven years. ² And she arose, and did according to the word of the man of God: and going with her household, she sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days.

¹² But the hand of God was in Juda, to give them one heart to do the word of the Lord, according to the commandment of the king, and of the princes.

⁶⁹ According to their ability, they gave towards the expenses of the work, sixty-one thousand solids of gold, five thousand pounds of silver, and a hundred garments for the priests.

⁹ For upon the first day of the first month he began to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem according to the good hand of his God upon him.

¹¹ Which thou hast commanded by the hand of thy servants the prophets, saying: The land which you go to possess, is an unclean land, according to the uncleanness of the people, and of other lands, with their abominations, who have filled it from mouth to mouth with their filth. ¹² Now therefore give not your daughters to their sons, and take not their daughters for your sons, and seek not their peace, nor their prosperity for ever: that you may be strengthened, and may eat the good things of the land, and may have your children your heirs for ever.

⁸ And a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, to give me timber that I may cover the gates of the tower of the house, and the walls of the city, and the house that I shall enter into. And the king gave me according to the good hand of my God with me.

¹⁸ And I shewed them how the hand of my God was good with me, and the king's words, which he had spoken to me, and I said: Let us rise up, and build. And their hands were strengthened in good.

⁸ And I said to them: We, as you know, have redeemed according to our ability our brethren the Jews, that were sold to the Gentiles: and will you then sell your brethren, for us to redeem them? And they held their peace, and found not what to answer.

¹² If he examine on a sudden, who shall answer him? or who can say: Why dost thou so? ¹³ God, whose wrath no man can resist, and under whom they stoop that bear up the world. ¹⁴ What am I then, that I should answer him, and have words with him?

¹³ Dost thou strive against him, because he hath not answered thee to all words?

^{2 (39:32)} Shall he that contendeth with God be so easily silenced? Surely he that reproveth God, ought to answer him.

³ Thou hast proved my heart, and visited it by night, thou hast tried me by fire: and iniquity hath not been found in me.

For he hath corrected the world, which shall not be moved: he will judge the people with justice.

¹⁷ But the mercy of the Lord is from eternity and unto eternity upon them that fear him: And his justice unto children's children,

² His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the righteous shall be blessed.

⁵ Acceptable is the man that sheweth mercy and lendeth: he shall order his words with judgment:

¹³ He hath blessed all that fear the Lord, both little and great. ¹⁴ May the Lord add blessings upon you: upon you, and upon your children.

²³ Turn ye at my reproof: behold I will utter my spirit to you, and will shew you my words.

² He that is good, shall draw grace from the Lord: but he that trusteth in his own devices, doth wickedly.

²² The good man leaveth heirs, sons, and grandsons: and the substance of the sinner is kept for the just.

¹⁴ A fool shall be filled with his own ways, and the good man shall be above him.

¹ The land that was desolate and impassable shall be glad, and the wilderness shall rejoice, and shall flourish like the lily. ² It shall bud forth and blossom, and shall rejoice with joy and praise: the glory of Libanus is given to it: the beauty of Carmel, and Saron, they shall see the glory of the Lord, and the beauty of our God.

¹ Behold my servant, I will uphold him: my elect, my soul delighteth in him: I have given my spirit upon him, he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

⁶ I the Lord have called thee in justice, and taken thee by the hand, and preserved thee. And I have given thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles:

³ For I will pour out waters upon the thirsty ground, and streams upon the dry land: I will pour out my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thy stock. ⁴ And they shall spring up among the herbs, as willows beside the running waters. ⁵ One shall say: I am the Lord's, and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob, and another shall subscribe with his hand, To the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

⁶ And he said: It is a small thing that thou shouldst be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to convert the dregs of Israel. Behold, I have given thee to be the light of the Gentiles, that thou mayst be my salvation even to the farthest part of the earth.

¹⁰ The Lord hath prepared his holy arm in the sight of all the Gentiles: and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

¹ Who a hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

¹ Behold the hand of the Lord is not shortened that it cannot save, neither is his ear heavy that it cannot hear.

³ And the Gentiles shall walk in thy light, and kings in the brightness of thy rising.

²¹ And thy people shall be all just, they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hand to glorify me.

³ To appoint to the mourners of Sion, and to give them a crown for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, a garment of praise for the spirit of grief: and they shall be called in it the mighty ones of justice, the planting of the Lord to glorify him.

⁸ For I am the Lord that love judgment, and hate robbery in a holocaust: and I will make their work in truth, and I will make a perpetual covenant with them. ⁹ And they shall know their seed among the Gentiles, and their offspring in the midst of peoples: all that shall see them, shall know them, that these are the seed which the Lord hath blessed.

² And the Gentiles shall see thy just one, and all kings thy glorious one: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.

¹⁵ And you shall leave your name for an execration to my elect: and the Lord God shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name.

¹¹ And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: What seest thou, Jeremias? And I said: I see a rod watching. ¹² And the Lord said to me: Thou hast seen well: for I will watch over my word to perform it. ¹³ And the word of the Lord came to me a second time saying: What seest thou? ¹⁹ O Lord, my might, and my strength, and my refuge in the day of tribulation: to thee the Gentiles shall come from the ends of the earth, and shall say: Surely our fathers have possessed lies, a vanity which hath not profited them.

¹⁸ Hearing I heard Ephraim when he went into captivity: thou hast chastised me, and I was instructed, as a young bullock unaccustomed to the yoke. Convert me, and I shall be converted, for thou art the Lord my God. ¹⁹ For after thou didst convert me, I did penance: and after thou didst shew unto me, I struck my thigh: I am confounded and ashamed, because I have borne the reproach of my youth. ²⁰ Surely Ephraim is an honourable son to me, surely he is a tender child: for since I spoke of him, I will still remember him. Therefore are my bowels troubled for him: pitying I will pity him, saith the Lord.

³⁹ And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me all days: and that it may be well with them, and with their children after them.

⁹ And I looked, and behold, a hand was sent to me, wherein was a book rolled up:

²⁵ And I will pour upon you clean water, and you shall be cleansed from all your filthiness, and I will cleanse you from all your idols. ²⁶ And I will give you a new heart, and put a new spirit within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and will give you a heart of flesh.

⁸ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not be defiled with the king's table, nor with the wine which he drank: and he requested the master of the eunuchs that he might not be defiled.

^{35 (4:32)} And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing before him: for he doth according to his will, as well with the powers of heaven, as among the inhabitants of the earth: and there is none that can resist his hand, and say to him: Why hast thou done it?

²³ And I will sow her unto me in the earth, and I will have mercy on her that was without mercy. ^(2:24) And I will say to that which is not my people: Thou art my people: and they shall say: Thou art my God.

³ They shall not dwell in the Lord's land: Ephraim is returned to Egypt, and hath eaten unclean things among the Assyrians.

²⁸ And it shall come to pass after this, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy: your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

¹⁸ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down sweetness, aud the hills shall flow with milk: and waters shall flow through all the rivers of Juda: and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord, and shall water the torrent of thorns.

⁴ These things the Lord God shewed to me: and behold the Lord called for judgment unto fire, and it devoured the great deep, and ate up a part at the same time. ⁵ And I said: O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee, who shall raise up Jacob, for he is a little one? ⁶ The Lord had pity upon this. Yea this also shall not be, said the Lord God. ⁷ These things the Lord shewed to me: and behold the Lord was standing upon a plastered wall, and in his hand a mason's trowel.

² And he said: What seest thou, Amos? And I said: A hook to draw down fruit. And the Lord said to me: The end is come upon my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more.

¹¹ In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David, that is fallen: and I will close up the breaches of the walls thereof, and repair what was fallen: and I will rebuild it as in the days of old. ¹² That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all nations, because my name is invoked upon them: saith the Lord that doth these things.

⁷ And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples, as a dew from the Lord, and as drops upon the grass, which waiteth not for man, nor tarrieth for the children of men.

¹¹ The Lord shall be terrible upon them, and shall consume all the gods of the earth: and they shall adore him every man from his own place, all the islands of the Gentiles.

⁹ Because then I will restore to the people a chosen lip, that all may call upon the name of the Lord, and may serve him with one shoulder.

¹¹ And many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall be my people, and I will dwell in the midst of thee: and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me to thee.

²⁰ Thus saith the Lord of hosts, until people come and dwell in many cities, ²¹ And the inhabitants go one to another, saying: Let us go, and entreat the face of the Lord, and let us seek the Lord of hosts: I also will go. ²² And many peoples, and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem, and to entreat the face of the Lord. ²³ Thus saith the Lord of hosts: In those days, wherein ten men of all languages of the Gentiles shall take hold, and shall hold fast the skirt of one that is a Jew, saying: We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.

¹⁰ And I will pour out upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace, and of prayers: and they shall look upon me, whom they have pierced: and they shall mourn for him as one mourneth for an only son, and they shall grieve over him, as the manner is to grieve for the death of the firstborn.

¹¹ For from the rising of the sun even to the going down, my name is great among the Gentiles, and in every place there is sacrifice, and there is offered to my name a clean oblation: for my name is great among the Gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts.

²⁰ But while he thought on these things, behold the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.

¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire.

¹¹ And I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven:

⁶ But go ye rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

³⁵ A good man out of a good treasure bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of an evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

²⁴ Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

¹⁷ Who said to him: Why askest thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

¹⁴ Take what is thine, and go thy way: I will also give to this last even as to thee. ¹⁵ Or, is it not lawful for me to do what I will? Is thy eye evil, because I am good?

³⁴ Therefore behold I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes: and some of them you will put to death and crucify: and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city.

¹⁴ And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world, for a testimony to all nations: and then shall the consummation come.

³⁵ And Paul and Barnabas continued at Antioch, teaching and preaching, with many others, the word of the Lord. ³⁶ And after some days, Paul said to Barnabas: Let us return and visit our brethren in all the cities wherein we have preached the word of the Lord, to see how they do. ³⁷ And Barnabas would have taken with them John also, that was surnamed Mark. ³⁸ But Paul desired that he (as having departed from them out of Pamphylia and not gone with them to the work) might not be received. ³⁹ And there arose a dissension so that they departed one from another. ¹⁶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel. For it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth: to the Jew first and to the Greek. ¹⁷ For the justice of God is revealed therein, from faith unto faith, as it is written: The just man liveth by faith.

²² Even the justice of God, by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all, and upon all them that believe in him: for there is no distinction.

²⁹ Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? yes, of the Gentiles also. ³⁰ For it is one God that justifieth circumcision by faith and uncircumcision through faith.

⁷ For scarce for a just man will one die: yet perhaps for a good man some one would dare to die.

Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it: Why hast thou made me thus? ²¹ Or hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump, to make one vessel unto honour and another unto dishonour? ²² What if God, willing to shew his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath, fitted for destruction, ²³ That he might shew the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy which he hath prepared unto glory? ²⁴ Even us, whom also he hath called, not only of the Jews but also of the Gentiles. ²⁵ As in Osee he saith: I will call that which was not my people, my people; and her that was not beloved, beloved; and her that had not obtained mercy; one that hath obtained mercy. ²⁶ And it shalt be in the place where it was said unto them: you are not my people; there they shall be called the sons of the living God.

³⁰ What then shall we say? That the Gentiles who followed not after justice have attained to justice, even the justice that is of faith.

⁹ For if thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thy heart that God hath raised him up from the dead, thou shalt be saved. ¹⁰ For, with the heart, we believe unto justice: but, with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

³² But call to mind the former days, wherein, being illuminated, you endured a great fight of afflictions. ³³ And on the one hand indeed, by reproaches and tribulations, were made a gazingstock; and on the other, became companions of them that were used in such sort. ³⁴ For you both had compassion on them that were in bands and took with joy the being stripped of your own goods, knowing that you have a better and a lasting substance. ³⁵ Do not therefore lose your confidence which hath a great reward. ³⁶ For patience is necessary for you: that, doing the will of God, you may receive the promise. ³⁷ For yet a little and a very little while, and he that is to come will come and will not delay. ³⁸ But my just man liveth by faith: but if he withdraw himself, he shall not please my soul. ³⁹ But we are not the children of withdrawing unto perdition, but of faith to the saving of the soul.

⁵ Let your manners be without covetousness, contented with such things as you have. For he hath said: I will not leave thee: neither will I forsake thee. ⁶ So that we may confidently say: The Lord is my helper: I will not fear what man shall do to me.

¹⁶ Do not err, therefore, my dearest brethren. ¹⁷ Every best gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change nor shadow of alteration.

¹⁴ Is any man sick among you? Let him bring in the priests of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

⁹ Using hospitality one towards another, without murmuring, ¹⁰ As every man hath received grace, ministering the same one to another: as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. ¹¹ If any man speak, let him speak, as the words of God. If any minister, let him do it, as of the power which God administereth: that in all things God may be honoured through Jesus Christ: to whom is glory and empire for ever and ever. Amen.

¹⁴ If you be reproached for the name of Christ, you shall be blessed: for that which is of the honour, glory and power of God, and that which is his Spirit resteth upon you.

⁴ By whom he hath given us most great and precious promises: that by these you may be made partakers of the divine nature: flying the corruption of that concupiscence which is in the world. ⁵ And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue: And in virtue, knowledge: ⁶ And in knowledge, abstinence: and in abstinence, patience: and in patience, godliness: ⁷ And in godliness, love of brotherhood: and in love of brotherhood, charity. ⁸ For if these things be with you and abound, they will make you to be neither empty nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ For he that hath not these things with him is blind and groping, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

¹ Behold this second epistle I write to you, my dearly beloved, in which, I stir up by way of admonition your sincere mind:

¹⁷ You therefore, brethren, knowing these things before, take heed, lest being led aside by the error of the unwise, you fall from your own steadfastness. ¹⁸ But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and unto the day of eternity, Amen.
