¹ The Ancient, to the dearly beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. ² Dearly beloved, concerning all things I make it my prayer that thou mayest proceed prosperously and fare well, as thy soul doth prosperously. ³ I was exceedingly glad when the brethren came and gave testimony to the truth in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. ⁴ I have no greater grace than this, to hear that my children walk in truth. ⁵ Dearly beloved, thou dost faithfully whatever thou dost for the brethren: and that for strangers, ⁶ Who have given testimony to thy charity in the sight of the church. Whom thou shalt do well to bring forward on their way in a manner worthy of God: ⁷ Because, for his name they went out, taking nothing of the Gentiles. ⁸ We therefore ought to receive such: that we may be fellow helpers of the truth. ⁹ I had written perhaps to the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, doth not receive us. ¹⁰ For this cause, if I come, I will advertise his works which he doth, with malicious words prating against us. And as if these things were not enough for him, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that do receive them he forbiddeth, and casteth out of the church. ¹¹ Dearly beloved, follow not that which is evil: but that which is good. He that doth good is of God: he that doth evil hath not seen God. ¹² To Demetrius, testimony is given by all, and by the truth itself: yea and we also give testimony. And thou knowest that our testimony is true. ¹³ I had many things to write unto thee: but I would not by ink and pen write to thee. ¹⁴ But I hope speedily to see thee: and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.

⁷ If thou do well, shalt thou not receive? but if ill, shall not sin forthwith be present at the door? but the lust thereof shall be under thee, and thou shalt have dominion over it.

²³ But he answered: Peace be with you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks. For the money, which you gave me, I have for good. And he brought Simeon out to them.

² Thou shalt not follow the multitude to do evil: neither shalt thou yield in judgment, to the opinion of the most part, to stray from the truth.

⁴ That the Lord may confirm his words, which he hath spoken of me, saying: If thy children shall take heed to their ways, and shall walk before me in truth, with all their heart, and with all their soul, there shall not be taken away from thee a man on the throne of Israel.

⁶ And Solomon said: Thou hast shewed great mercy to thy servant David, my father, even as he walked before thee in truth, and justice, and an upright heart with thee: and thou hast kept thy great mercy for him, and hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

¹⁵ And returning to the man of God, with all his train, he came, and stood before him, and said: In truth, I know there is no other God, in all the earth, but only in Israel: I beseech thee, therefore, take a blessing of thy servant. ¹⁶ But he answered: As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And when he pressed him, he still refused.

²⁰ But Giezi, the servant of the man of God, said: My master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving of him that which he brought: as the Lord liveth, I will run after him, and take something of him. ²¹ And Giezi followed after Naaman: and when he saw him running after him, he leapt down from his chariot to meet him, and said: Is all well? ²² And he said: Well: my master hath sent me to thee, saying: Just now there are come to me from mount Ephraim, two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them a talent of silver, and two changes of garments. ²³ And Naaman said: It is better that thou take two talents. And he forced him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, and two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants, and they carried them before him. ²⁴ And when he was come, and now it was the evening, he took them from their hands, and laid them up in the house, and sent the men away, and they departed. ²⁵ But he went in, and stood before his master. And Eliseus said: Whence comest thou, Giezi? He answered: Thy servant went no whither. ²⁶ But he said: Was not my heart present, when the man turned back, from his chariot, to meet thee? So now thou hast received money, and received garments, to buy oliveyards and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and men-servants, and maid-servants. ²⁷ But the leprosy of Naaman, shall also stick to thee, and to thy seed for ever. And he went out from him a leper, as white as snow.

³ I beseech thee, O Lord, remember how I have walked before thee in truth, and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is pleasing before thee. And Ezechias wept with much weeping.

¹ Unto the end. A psalm for David. ^(20:2) May the Lord hear thee in the day of tribulation: may the name of the God of Jacob protect thee. ^{2 (20:3)} May he send thee help from the sanctuary: and defend thee out of Sion. ^{3 (20:4)} May he be mindful of all thy sacrifices: and may thy whole burntoffering be made fat. ^{4 (20:5)} May he give thee according to thy own heart; and confirm all thy counsels. ^{5 (20:6)} We will rejoice in thy salvation; and in the name of our God we shall be exalted.

¹¹ Thy words have I hidden in my heart, that I may not sin against thee.

⁸ The wise of heart receiveth precepts: a fool is beaten with lips.

¹⁰ He that winketh with the eye, shall cause sorrow: and the foolish in lips shall be beaten.

¹¹ He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that pursueth idleness is very foolish.

²⁴ The father of the just rejoiceth greatly: he that hath begotten a wise son, shall have joy in him.

¹⁶ Wash yourselves, be clean, take away the evil of your devices from my eyes, cease to do perversely, ¹⁷ Learn to do well: seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge for the fatherless, defend the widow.

¹⁸ Behold I and my children, whom the Lord hath given me for a sign, and for a wonder in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwelleth in mount Sion.

³ And said: I beseech thee, O Lord, remember how I have walked before thee in truth, and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Ezechias wept with great weeping.

⁵ Hear the word of the Lord, you that tremble at his word: Your brethren that hate you, and cast you out for my name's sake, have said: Let the Lord be glorified, and we shall see in your joy: but they shall be confounded.

¹⁴ And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words: going forth out of that house or city shake off the dust from your feet.

Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can. ²³ He saith to them: My chalice indeed you shall drink; but to sit on my right or left hand is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father. ²⁴ And the ten, hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren. ²⁵ But Jesus called them to him and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and that they that are the greater, exercise power upon them. ²⁶ It shall not be so among you: but whosoever is the greater among you, let him be your minister. ²⁷ And he that will be first among you shall be your servant. ²⁸ Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a redemption for many.

⁴ For they bind heavy and insupportable burdens and lay them on men's shoulders: but with a finger of their own they will not move them. ⁵ And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their phylacteries broad and enlarge their fringes. ⁶ And they love the first places at feasts and the first chairs in the synagogues, ⁷ And salutations in the market place, and to be called by men, Rabbi. ⁸ But be not you called Rabbi. For one is your master: and all you are brethren.

⁴⁵ Who, thinkest thou, is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath appointed over his family, to give them meat in season?

²¹ His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ²² And he also that had received the two talents came and said: Lord, thou deliveredst two talents to me. Behold I have gained other two. ²³ His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant: because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. ²² Blessed shall you be when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you and shall reproach you and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.

⁴⁸ And said to them: Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me. For he that is the lesser among you all, he is the greater.

⁷ And he from within should answer and say: Trouble me not; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot rise and give thee.

⁴² And the Lord said: Who thinkest thou is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season?

¹⁰ He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in that which is greater: and he that is unjust in that which is little is unjust also in that which is greater. ¹¹ If then you have not been faithful in the unjust mammon, who will trust you with that which is the true? ¹² And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own?

²⁴ And there was also a strife amongst them, which of them should seem to be the greater. ²⁵ And he said to them: The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that have power over them are called beneficent. ²⁶ But you not so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger: and he that is the leader, as he that serveth. ²⁷ For which is greater, he that sitteth at table or he that serveth? Is not he that sitteth at table? But I am in the midst of you, as he that serveth.

²⁰ For every one that doth evil hateth the light and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved.

²² These things his parents said, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had already agreed among themselves that if any man should confess him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

³⁴ They answered and said to him: Thou wast wholly born in sins; and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. ³⁵ Jesus heard that they had cast him out. And when he had found him, he said to him: Dost thou believe in the Son of God?

³ To him the porter openeth: and the sheep hear his voice. And he calleth his own sheep by name and leadeth them out.

²⁷ My sheep hear my voice. And I know them: and they follow me.

²⁶ If any man minister to me, let him follow me: and where I am, there also shall my minister be. If any man minister to me, him will my Father honour.

³⁵ Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, and the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither be goeth. ³⁶ Whilst you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things Jesus spoke: and he went away and hid himself from them.

³⁵ And he that saw it hath given testimony: and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true: that you also may believe.

²⁴ This is that disciple who giveth testimony of these things and hath written these things: and we know that his testimony is true.

⁴¹ And they indeed went from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were accounted worthy to suffer reproach for the name of Jesus.

⁴ They therefore that were dispersed went about preaching the word of God.

¹⁶ For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.

²² Who said: Cornelius, a centurion, a just man and one that feareth God, and having good testimony from all the nation of the Jews, received an answer of an holy angel, to send for thee into his house And to hear words of thee.

³ They therefore, being brought on their way by the church, passed through Phenice and Samaria, relating the conversion of the Gentiles. And they caused great joy to all the brethren.

²⁹ That you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication: from which things keeping yourselves, you shall do well. Fare ye well.

²⁹ And the whole city was filled with confusion. And having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

⁴ And there accompanied him Sopater, the son of Pyrrhus, of Berea: and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus: and Gaius of Derbe and Timothy: and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.

⁵ And the days being expired, departing we went forward, they all bringing us on our way, with their wives and children, till we were out of the city. And we kneeled down on the shore: and we prayed.

¹² And one Ananias, a man according to the law, having testimony of all the Jews who dwelt there,

⁸ First, I give thanks to my God, through Jesus Christ, for you all: because your faith is spoken of in the whole world. ⁹ For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make a commemoration of you:

¹⁰ Loving one another with the charity of brotherhood: with honour preventing one another.

²⁴ When I shall begin to take my journey into Spain, I hope that, as I pass, I shall see you and be brought on my way thither by you: if first, in part, I shall have enjoyed you.

¹ And I commend to you Phebe, our sister, who is in the ministry of the church, that is in Cenchrae: ² That you receive her in the Lord as becometh saints and that you assist her in whatsoever business she shall have need of you. For she also hath assisted many, and myself also. ³ Salute Prisca and Aquila, my helpers, in Christ Jesus ⁴ (Who have for my life laid down their own necks: to whom not I only give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles), ⁵ And the church which is in their house. ¹⁴ I give God thanks, that I baptized none of you but Crispus and Caius:

⁵ The ministers of him whom you have believed: and to every one as the Lord hath given. ⁶ I have planted, Apollo watered: but God gave the increase. ⁷ Therefore, neither he that planteth is any thing, nor he that watereth: but God that giveth the increase. ⁸ Now he that planteth and he that watereth, are one. And every man shall receive his own reward, according to his own labour. ⁹ For we are God's coadjutors. You are God's husbandry: you are God's building.

¹⁴ I write not these things to confound you: but I admonish you as my dearest children. ¹⁵ For if you have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet not many fathers. For in Christ Jesus, by the gospel, I have begotten you. ¹⁶ Wherefore, I beseech you, be ye followers of me as I also am of Christ.

¹ It is absolutely heard that there is fornication among you and such fornication as the like is not among the heathens: that one should have his father's wife. ² And you are puffed up and have not rather mourned: that he might be taken away from among you that hath done this thing. ³ I indeed, absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged, as though I were present, him that hath so done, ⁴ In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, you being gathered together and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus: ⁵ To deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

¹² If others be partakers of this power over you, why not we rather? Nevertheless, we have not used this power: but we bear all things, lest we should give any hindrance to the gospel of Christ. ¹³ Know you not that they who work in the holy place eat the things that are of the holy place; and they that serve the altar partake with the altar? ¹⁴ So also the Lord ordained that they who preach the gospel should live by the gospel. ¹⁵ But I have used none of these things. Neither have I written these things, that they should be so done unto me: for it is good for me to die rather than that any man should make my glory void.

¹⁸ What is my reward then? That preaching the gospel, I may deliver the gospel without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.

¹ Be ye followers of me, as I also am of Christ.

¹⁰ Now if Timothy come, see that he be with you without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do. ¹¹ Let no man therefore despise him: but conduct ye him on his way in peace, that he may come to me. For I look for him with the brethren.

¹⁶ And to pass by you into Macedonia: and again from Macedonia to come to you, and by you to be brought on my way towards Judea.

¹ Therefore seeing we have this ministration, according as we have obtained mercy, we faint not. ² But we renounce the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness nor adulterating the word of God: but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience, in the sight of God. ³ And if our gospel be also hid, it is hid to them that are lost,

⁵ For we preach not ourselves, but Jesus Christ our Lord: and ourselves your servants through Jesus.

¹ And we helping do exhort you that you receive not the grace of God in vain.

² Receive us. We have injured no man: we have corrupted no man: we have overreached no man. ³ I speak not this to your condemnation. For we have said before that you are in our hearts: to die together and to live together.

⁶ But God, who comforteth the humble, comforted us by the coming of Titus. ⁷ And not by his coming only, but also by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, relating to us your desire, your mourning, your zeal for me: so that I rejoiced the more.

²³ Either for Titus, who is my companion and fellow labourer towards you, or our brethren, the apostles of the churches, the glory of Christ.

¹ Now I Paul, myself beseech you, by the mildness and modesty of Christ: who in presence indeed am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you. ² But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence wherewith I am thought to be bold, against some who reckon us as if we walked according to the flesh. ³ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. ⁴ For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty to God, unto the pulling down of fortifications, destroying counsels, ⁵ And every height that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God: and bringing into captivity every understanding unto the obedience of Christ: ⁶ And having in readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience shall be fulfilled. ⁷ See the things that are according to outward appearance. If any man trust to himself, that he is Christ's let him think this again with himself, that as he is Christ's, so are we also. ⁸ For if also I should boast somewhat more of our power, which the Lord hath given us unto edification and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed. ⁹ But that I may not be thought as it were to terrify you by epistles, ¹⁰ (For his epistles indeed, say they, are weighty and strong; but his bodily presence is weak and his speech contemptible): ¹¹ Let such a one think this, that such as we are in word by epistles when absent, such also we will be indeed when present.

⁷ Or did I commit a fault, humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached unto you the Gospel of God freely? ⁸ I have taken from other churches, receiving wages of them for your ministry. ⁹ And, when I was present with you and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was wanting to me, the brethren supplied who came from Macedonia. And in all things I have kept myself from being burthensome to you: and so I will keep myself.

¹³ For what is there that you have had less than the other churches but that I myself was not burthensome to you? Pardon me this injury.

² I have told before and foretell, as present and now absent, to them that sinned before and to all the rest, that if I come again, I will not spare.

¹⁴ But when I saw that they walked not uprightly unto the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all: If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of the Gentiles and not as the Jews do, how dost thou compel the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

¹⁹ My little children, of whom I am in labour again, until Christ be formed in you.

¹⁶ I say then: Walk in the spirit: and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

¹⁰ Therefore, whilst we have time, let us work good to all men, but especially to those who are of the household of the faith.

¹⁵ Wherefore, I also, hearing of your faith that is in the Lord Jesus and of your love towards all the saints, ¹⁶ Cease not to give thanks for you, making commemoration of you in my prayers,

¹ Be ye therefore followers of God, as most dear children:

²³ Peace be to the brethren and charity with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

⁴ Always in all my prayers making supplication for you all with joy:

³ Let nothing be done through contention: neither by vain glory. But in humility, let each esteem others better than themselves: ⁴ Each one not considering the things that are his own, but those that are other men's.

⁴ Hearing your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have towards all the saints. ⁵ For the hope that is laid up for you in heaven, which you have heard in the word of the truth of the gospel, ⁶ Which is come unto you, as also it is in the whole world and bringeth forth fruit and groweth, even as it doth in you, since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth. ⁷ As you learned of Epaphras, our most beloved fellow servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ Jesus; ⁸ Who also hath manifested your love in the spirit.

¹⁰ That you may walk worthy of God, in all things pleasing; being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God:

²⁴ Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you and fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the church:

¹⁷ All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

¹¹ And Jesus that is called Justus: who are of the circumcision. These only are my helpers, in the kingdom of God: who have been a comfort to me.

³ Being mindful of the work of your faith and labour and charity: and of the enduring of the hope of our Lord Jesus Christ before God and our Father. ⁴ Knowing, brethren, beloved of God, your election: ⁵ For our gospel hath not been unto you in word only, but in power also: and in the Holy Ghost and in much fulness, as you know what manner of men we have been among you for your sakes. ⁶ And you became followers of us and of the Lord: receiving the word in much tribulation, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
