⁸ And the king of Israel said to Josaphat. There is one man left, by whom we may inquire of the Lord; Micheas, the son of Jemla: but I hate him, for he doth not prophecy good to me, but evil. And Josaphat said: Speak not so, O king.

¹⁸ (Then the king of Israel said to Josaphat: Did I not tell thee, that he prophesieth no good to me, but always evil?)

⁹ For the eyes of the Lord behold all the earth, and give strength to those who with a perfect heart trust in him. Wherefore thou hast done foolishly, and for this cause from this time wars shall arise against thee. ¹⁰ And Asa was angry with the seer, and commanded him to be put in prison: for he was greatly enraged because of this thing: and he put to death many of the people at that time.

⁴ And Josaphat said to the king of Israel: Inquire, I beseech thee, at present the word of the Lord. ⁵ So the king of Israel gathered together of the prophets four hundred men, and he said to them: Shall we go to Ramoth Galaad to fight, or shall we forbear? But they said: Go up, and God will deliver into the king's hand.

²⁰ The spirit of God then came upon Zacharias the son of Joiada the priest, and he stood in the sight of the people, and said to them: Thus saith the Lord God: Why transgress you the commandment of the Lord which will not be for your good, and have forsaken the Lord, to make him forsake you? ²¹ And they gathered themselves together against him, and stoned him at the king's commandment in the court of the house of the Lord. ²² And king Joas did not remember the kindness that Joiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. And when he died, he said: The Lord see, and require it.

¹⁵ Wherefore the Lord being angry against Amasias, sent a prophet to him, to say to him: Why hast thou adored gods that have not delivered their own people out of thy hand? ¹⁶ And when he spoke these things, he answered him: Art thou the king's counsellor? be quiet, lest I kill thee. And the prophet departing, said: I know that God is minded to kill thee, because thou hast done this evil, and moreover hast not hearkened to my counsel.

¹² To whom he said: This is my rest, refresh the weary, and this is my refreshing: and they would not hear.

⁹ The land hath mourned, and languished: Libanus is confounded, and become foul, and Saron is become as a desert: and Basan and Carmel are shaken. ¹⁰ Now will I rise up, saith the Lord: now will I be exalted, now will I lift up myself. ¹¹ You shall conceive heat, you shall bring forth stubble: your breath as fire shall devour you.

³¹ The prophets prophesied falsehood, and the priests clapped their hands: and my people loved such things: what then shall be done in the end thereof?

¹⁶ Thus saith the Lord: Stand ye on the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, which is the good way, and walk ye in it: and you shall find refreshment for your souls. And they said: We will not walk. ¹⁷ And I appointed watchmen over you, saying: Hearken ye to the sound of the trumpet. And they said: We will not hearken.

¹⁸ And they said: Come, and let us invent devices against Jeremias: for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet: come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us give no heed to all his words.

¹⁶ Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Hearken not to the words of the prophets that prophesy to you, and deceive you: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord. ¹⁷ They say to them that blaspheme me: The Lord hath said: You shall have peace: and to every one that walketh in the perverseness of his own heart, they have said: No evil shall come upon you.

⁹ Therefore hearken not to your prophets, and diviners, and dreamers, and soothsayers, and sorcerers, that say to you: You shall not serve the king of Babylon.

⁸ For thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Let not your prophets that are in the midst of you, and your diviners deceive you: and give no heed to your dreams which you dream:

¹⁰ And Amasias the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying: Amos hath rebelled against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. ¹¹ For thus saith Amos: Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall be carried away captive out of their own land. ¹² And Amasias said to Amos: Thou seer, go, flee away into the land of Juda: and eat bread there, and prophesy there. ¹³ But prophesy not again any more in Bethel: because it is the king's sanctuary, and it is the house of the kingdom. ¹⁴ And Amos answered and said to Amasias: I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet: but I am a herdsman plucking wild figs. ¹⁵ And the Lord took me when I followed the flock, and the Lord said to me: Go, prophesy to my people Israel. ¹⁶ And now hear thou the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, thou shalt not prophesy against Israel, and thou shalt not drop thy word upon the house of the idol. ¹⁷ Therefore thus saith the Lord: Thy wife shall play the harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be measured by a line: and thou shalt die in a polluted land, and Israel shall go into captivity out of their land.

¹¹ Would God I were not a man that hath the spirit, and that I rather spoke a lie: I will let drop to thee of wine, and of drunkeness: and it shall be this people upon whom it shall drop.

²⁶ Woe to you when men shall bless you: for according to these things did their fathers to the false prophets.

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him the same hour: but they feared the people, for they knew that he spoke this parable to them.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment: Because the light is come into the world and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil. ²⁰ For every one that doth evil hateth the light and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved. ²¹ But he that doth truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest: because they are done in God.

⁴⁵ But if I say the truth, you believe me not.

²¹ (Now all the Athenians and strangers that were there employed themselves in nothing else, but either in telling or in hearing some new thing.)

¹ And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not in loftiness of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of Christ.

⁴ And my speech and my preaching was not in the persuasive words of human wisdom. but in shewing of the Spirit and power:

¹⁶ Am I then become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

¹⁰ For fornicators, for them who defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and whatever other thing is contrary to sound doctrine:

¹ Now the Spirit manifestly saith that in the last times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to spirits of error and doctrines of devils, ² Speaking lies in hypocrisy and having their conscience seared, ³ Forbidding to marry, to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving by the faithful and by them that have known the truth.

¹ Know also this, that in the last days shall come dangerous times. ² Men shall be lovers of themselves, covetous, haughty, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, wicked, ³ Without affection, without peace, slanderers, incontinent, unmerciful, without kindness, ⁴ Traitors, stubborn, puffed up, and lovers of pleasure more than of God: ⁵ Having an appearance indeed of godliness but denying the power thereof. Now these avoid. ⁶ For of these sort are they who creep into houses and lead captive silly women laden with sins, who are led away with divers desires:

¹ But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers who shall bring in sects of perdition and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction. ² And many shall follow their riotousness, through whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. ³ And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not: and their perdition slumbereth not.
