By what means should I detest him, whom the Lord detesteth not?

²⁴ Who, when they had set forward and had gone up to the mountains, came as far as the valley of the cluster: and having viewed the land,

I will go now, and take away the reproach of the people: for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, who hath dared to curse the army of the living God?

⁵¹ He ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head. And the Philistines seeing that their champion was dead, fled away.

⁵ And he put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the Lord wrought great salvation for all Israel. Thou sawest it and didst rejoice. Why therefore wilt thou sin against innocent blood, by killing David, who is without fault?

¹ David therefore went from thence, and fled to the cave of Odollam. And when his brethren, and all his father's house, had heard of it, they went down to him thither.

⁴ And he left them under thc eyes of the king of Moab, and they abode with him all the days that David was in the hold. ⁵ And Gad the prophet said to David: Abide not in the hold, depart, and go into the land of Juda. And David departed, and came into the forest of Haret.

¹⁴ And Achimelech answering the king, said: And who amongst all thy servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son in law, and goeth forth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thy house?

^{22 (24:23)} And David swore to Saul. So Saul went home: and David and his men went up into safer places.

²⁸ Forgive the iniquity of thy handmaid: for the Lord will surely make for my lord a faithful house, because thou, my lord, fightest the battles of the Lord: let not evil therefore be found in thee all the days of thy life.

⁶ David spoke to Achimelech, the Hethite, and Abisai, the son of Sarvia, the brother of Joab, saying: Who will go down with me to Saul into the camp? And Abisai said: I will go with thee. ⁷ So David and Abisai came to the people by night, and found Saul lying and sleeping in the tent, and his spear fixed in the ground at his head: and Abner and the people sleeping round about him. ⁸ And Abisai said to David: God hath shut up thy enemy this day into thy hands: now then I will run him through with my spear, even to the earth at once, and there shall be no need of a second time.

¹¹ The Lord be merciful unto me, and keep me that I never put forth my hand against the Lord's anointed. But now take the spear which is at his head, and the cup of water, and let us go.

¹⁴ I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son: and if he commit any iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men. ¹⁵ But my mercy I will not take away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before my face. ¹⁶ And thy house shall be faithful, and thy kingdom for ever before thy face, and thy throne shall be firm for ever.

¹⁸ And David went in, and sat before the Lord, and said: Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far?

³ David defeated also Adarezer the son of Rohob king of Soba, when he went to extend his dominion over the river Euphrates.

⁸ And out of Bete, and out of Beroth, cities of Adarezer, king David took and exceeding great quantity of brass.

¹⁸ And Banaias the son of Joiada was over the Cerethi and Phelethi: and the sons of David were the princes.

⁶ And the children of Ammon seeing that they had done an injury to David, sent and hired the Syrians of Rohob, and the Syrians of Soba, twenty thousand footmen, and of the king of Maacha a thousand men, and of Istob twelve thousand men.

⁸ And the children of Ammon came out, and set their men in array at the entering in of the gate: but the Syrians of Soba, and of Rohob, and of Istob, and of Maacha were by themselves in the field.

¹⁰ And the rest of the people he delivered to Abisai his brother, who set them in array against the children of Ammon.

¹⁴ And the children of Ammon seeing that the Syrians were fled, they fled also before Abisai, and entered into the city: and Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

³ And the king sent, and inquired who the woman was. And it was told him, that she was Bethsabee the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Urias the Hethite.

⁶ And David sent to Joab, saying: Send me Urias the Hethite. And Joab sent Urias to David. ⁷ And Urias came to David. And David asked how Joab did, and the people, and how the war was carried on. ⁸ And David said to Urias: Go into thy house, and wash thy feet. And Urias went out from the king's house, and there went out after him a mess of meat from the king. ⁹ But Urias slept before the gate of the king's house, with the other servants of his lord, and went not down to his own house. ¹⁰ And it was told David by some that said: Urias went not to his house. And David said to Urias: Didst thou not come from thy journey? why didst thou not go down to thy house? ¹¹ And Urias said to David: The ark of God and Israel and Juda dwell in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord abide upon the face of the earth: and shall I go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to sleep with my wife? By thy welfare and by the welfare of thy soul I will not do this thing. ¹² Then David said to Urias: Tarry here to day, and to morrow I will send thee away. Urias tarried in Jerusalem that day and the next. ¹³ And David called him to eat and to drink before him, and he made him drunk: and he went out in the evening, and slept on his couch with the servants of his lord, and went not down into his house. ¹⁴ And when the morning was come, David wrote a letter to Joab: and sent it by the hand of Urias, ¹⁵ Writing in the letter: Set ye Urias in the front of the battle, where the fight is strongest: and leave ye him, that he may be wounded and die. ¹⁶ Wherefore as Joab was besieging the city, he put Urias in the place where he knew the bravest men were. ¹⁷ And the men coming out of the city, fought against Joab, and there fell some of the people of the servants of David, and Urias the Hethite was killed also. ¹⁸ Then Joab sent, and told David all things concerning the battle. ¹⁹ And he charged the messenger, saying: When thou hast told all the words of the battle to the king, ²⁰ If thou see him to be angry, and he shall say: Why did you approach so near to the wall to fight? knew you not that many darts are thrown from above off the wall? ²¹ Who killed Abimelech the son of Jerobaal? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall and slew him in Thebes? Why did you go near the wall? Thou shalt say: Thy servant Urias the Hethite is also slain. ²² So the messenger departed, and came and told David all that Joab had commanded him. ²³ And the messenger said to David: The men prevailed against us, and they came out to us into the field: and we vigorously charged and pursued them even to the gate of the city. ²⁴ And the archers shot their arrows at thy servants from off the wall above: and some of the king's servants are slain, and thy servant Urias the Hethite is also dead. ²⁵ And David said to the messenger: Thus shalt thou say to Joab: Let not this thing discourage thee: for various is the event of war: and sometimes one, sometimes another is consumed by the sword: encourage thy warriors against the city, and exhort them that thou mayest overthrow it. ²⁶ And the wife of Urias heard that Urias her husband was dead, and she mourned for him. ²⁷ And the mourning being over, David sent and brought her into his house, and she became his wife, and she bore him a son: and this thing which David had done, was displeasing to the Lord.

⁹ Why therefore hast thou despised the word of the Lord, to do evil in my sight? Thou hast killed Urias the Hethite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. ¹⁰ Therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Urias the Hethite to be thy wife.

¹⁴ But he would not hearken to her prayers, but being stronger overpowered her and lay with her.

²⁸ And Absalom had commanded his servants, saying: Take notice when Ammon shall be drunk with wine, and when I shall say to you: Strike him, and kill him, fear not: for it is I that command you: take courage, and be valiant men.

³ For I will pour out waters upon the thirsty ground, and streams upon the dry land: I will pour out my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thy stock.

¹² Therefore will I distribute to him very many, and he shall divide the spoils of the strong, because he hath delivered his soul unto death, and was reputed with the wicked: and he hath borne the sins of many, and hath prayed for the transgressors.

³ Incline your ear and come to me: hear and your soul shall live, and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, the faithful mercies of David.

¹ Arise, be enlightened, O Jerusalem: for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

³ And the Gentiles shall walk in thy light, and kings in the brightness of thy rising.

¹⁸ Iniquity shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction in thy borders, and salvation shall possess thy walls, and praise thy gates. ¹⁹ Thou shalt no more have the sun for thy light by day, neither shall the brightness of the moon enlighten thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee for an everlasting light, and thy God for thy glory. ²⁰ Thy sun shall go down no more, and thy moon shall not decrease: for the Lord shall be unto thee for an everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

⁸ For I am the Lord that love judgment, and hate robbery in a holocaust: and I will make their work in truth, and I will make a perpetual covenant with them.

³ I have trodden the winepress alone, and of the Gentiles there is not a man with me: I have trampled on them in my indignation, and have trodden them down in my wrath, and their blood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my apparel.

⁵ I looked about, and there was none to help: I sought, and there was none to give aid: and my own arm hath saved for me, and my indignation itself hath helped me.

⁵ Behold the days come, saith the Lord, and I will raise up to David a just branch: and a king shall reign, and shall be wise: and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

⁴⁰ And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, and will not cease to do them good: and I will give my fear in their heart, that they may not revolt from me.

²⁵ Thus saith the Lord. If I have not set my covenant between day and night, and laws to heaven and earth: ²⁶ Surely I will also cast off the seed of Jacob, and of David my servant, so as not to take any of his seed to be rulers of the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will bring back their captivity, and will have mercy on them.

¹⁹ Coph. Arise, give praise in the night, in the beginning of the watches: pour out thy heart like water, before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands to him for the life of thy little children, that have fainted for hunger at the top of all the streets.

⁶ And thou, O son of man, fear not, neither be thou afraid of their words: for thou art among unbelievers and destroyers, and thou dwellest with scorpions. Fear not their words, neither be thou dismayed at their looks: for they are a provoking house.

²⁶ And I will make a covenant of peace with them, it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will establish them, and will multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for ever.

³ He will revive us after two days: on the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. We shall know, and we shall follow on, that we may know the Lord. His going forth is prepared as the morning light, and he will come to us as the early and the latter rain to the earth.

⁵ For this reason have I hewed them by the prophets, I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments shall go forth as the light.

⁵ You that sing to the sound of the psaltery: they have thought themselves to have instruments of music like David;

¹¹ In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David, that is fallen: and I will close up the breaches of the walls thereof, and repair what was fallen: and I will rebuild it as in the days of old.

¹⁵ Yet will I bring an heir to thee that dwellest in Maresa: even to Odollam shall the glory of Israel come.

⁷ And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples, as a dew from the Lord, and as drops upon the grass, which waiteth not for man, nor tarrieth for the children of men.

⁹ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Sion, shout for joy, O daughter of Jerusalem: BEHOLD THY KING will come to thee, the just and saviour: he is poor, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt, the foal of an ass.

² But unto you that fear my name, the Sun of justice shall arise, and health in his wings: and you shall go forth, and shall leap like calves of the herd.

⁶ And Jesse begot David the king. And David the king begot Solomon, of her that had been the wife of Urias.

¹⁰ For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doth not yield good fruit, shall be cut down, and cast into the fire. ¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire. ¹² Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.

⁸ And others fell upon good ground: and they brought forth fruit, some an hundred fold, some sixty fold, and some thirty fold.

²³ But he that received the seed upon good ground, is he that heareth the word, and understandeth, and beareth fruit, and yieldeth the one an hundredfold, and another sixty, and another thirty.

⁴¹ The Son of man shall send his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all scandals, and them that work iniquity. ⁴² And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁴³ He saith to them: How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying:

²⁸ For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins.

³⁶ For David himself saith by the Holy Ghost: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy footstool.

²⁴ And he said to them: This is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many.

⁵⁰ Then his disciples, leaving him, all fled away.

⁷⁸ Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: ⁷⁹ To enlighten them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

¹⁴ But his citizens hated him and they sent an embassage after him, saying: We will not have this man to reign over us.

²⁷ But as for those my enemies, who would not have me reign over them, bring them hither and kill them before me.

⁴² And David himself saith in the book of Psalms: The Lord said to my Lord, sit thou on my right hand,

⁴⁴ And he said to them: These are the words which I spoke to you while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled which are written in the law of Moses and in the prophets and in the psalms, concerning me.

⁷ This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God and who he is that saith to thee: Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

¹⁴ But the water that I will give him shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting.

^{52 (6:53)} The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? ^{53 (6:54)} Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you: except you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. ^{54 (6:55)} He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.

³⁷ And on the last, and great day of the festivity, Jesus stood and cried, saying: If any man thirst, let him come to me and drink.

⁶ If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch and shall wither: and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire: and he burneth.

²⁵ For David saith concerning him: I foresaw the Lord before my face: because he is at my right hand, that I may not be moved. ²⁶ For this my heart hath been glad, and my tongue hath rejoiced: moreover my flesh also shall rest in hope. ²⁷ Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell: nor suffer thy Holy One to see corruption. ²⁸ Thou hast made known to me the ways of life: thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. ²⁹ Ye men, brethren, let me freely speak to you of the patriarch David: that he died and was buried; and his sepulchre is with us to this present say. ³⁰ Whereas therefore he was a prophet and knew that God hath sworn to him with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins one should sit upon his throne. ³¹ Foreseeing this, he spoke of the resurrection of Christ. For neither was he left in hell: neither did his flesh see corruption.

³⁴ And to shew that he raised him up from the dead, not to return now any more to corruption, he said thus: I will give you the holy things of David, faithful.

²⁴ But I fear none of these things, neither do I count my life more precious than myself, so that I may consummate my course and the ministry of the word which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

⁷ For scarce for a just man will one die: yet perhaps for a good man some one would dare to die.

¹⁸ For I dare not to speak of any of those things which Christ worketh not by me, for the obedience of the Gentiles, by word and deed,

⁶ I have planted, Apollo watered: but God gave the increase. ⁷ Therefore, neither he that planteth is any thing, nor he that watereth: but God that giveth the increase.

³⁰ Why also are we in danger every hour?

⁴¹ One is the glory of the sun, another the glory of the moon, and another the glory of the stars. For star differeth from star in glory.

⁵ For we preach not ourselves, but Jesus Christ our Lord: and ourselves your servants through Jesus.

¹⁴ For the charity of Christ presseth us: judging this, that if one died for all, then all were dead.

¹⁹ Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual canticles, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord: ²⁰ Giving thanks always for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God and the Father:

¹⁰ Finally, brethren, be strengthened in the Lord and in the might of his power. ¹¹ Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil. ¹² For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places. ¹³ Therefore, take unto you the armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day and to stand in all things perfect. ¹⁴ Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth and having on the breastplate of justice: ¹⁵ And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. ¹⁶ In all things taking the shield of faith, wherewith you may be able to extinguish all the fiery darts of the most wicked one. ¹⁷ And take unto you the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God). ¹⁸ By all prayer and supplication praying at all times in the spirit: and in the same watching with all instance and supplication for all the saints:

¹⁷ Yea, and if I be made a victim upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and congratulate with you all.

¹⁵ And despoiling the principalities and powers, he hath exposed them confidently in open shew, triumphing over them in himself.

¹⁶ Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly: in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles, singing in grace in your hearts to God.

⁸ In a flame of fire, giving vengeance to them who know not God and who obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁸ And then that wicked one shall be revealed: whom the Lord Jesus shall kill with the spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: him

⁸ But to the Son: Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of justice is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

⁷ Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost saith: To-day if you shall hear his voice, ⁸ Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the desert,

⁸ But that which bringeth forth thorns and briers is reprobate and very near unto a curse: whose end is to be burnt.

¹⁹ Which we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm, and which entereth in even within the veil:

²⁰ And may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great pastor of the sheep, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the blood of the everlasting testament,

¹³ Is any of you sad? Let him pray: Is he cheerful in mind? Let him sing.

¹³ But I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance. ¹⁴ Being assured that the laying away of this my tabernacle is at hand, according as our Lord Jesus Christ also hath signified to me. ¹⁵ And I will endeavour that you frequently have after my decease whereby you may keep a memory of these things.

²¹ For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.
