⁴ The idols of the Gentiles are silver and gold, the works of the hands of men. ⁵ They have mouths and speak not: they have eyes and see not. ⁶ They have ears and hear not: they have noses and smell not. ⁷ They have hands and feel not: they have feet and walk not: neither shall they cry out through their throat. ⁸ Let them that make them become like unto them: and all such as trust in them.

³⁸ And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the temple of Nesroch his god, that Adramelech and Sarasar his sons slew him with the sword: and they fled into the land of Ararat, and Asarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

¹⁷ But the residue thereof he made a god, and a graven thing for himself: he boweth down before it, and adoreth it, and prayeth unto it, saying: Deliver me, for thou art my God.

²⁰ Assemble yourselves, and come, and draw near together, ye that are saved of the Gentiles: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven work, and pray to a god that cannot save.

⁵ They are framed after the likeness of a palm tree, and shall not speak: they must be carried to be removed, because they cannot go. Therefore fear them not, for they can neither do evil nor good.

²³ But hast lifted thyself up against the Lord of heaven: and the vessels of his house have been brought before thee: and thou, and thy nobles, and thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them: and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and of gold, and of brass, of iron, and of wood, and of stone, that neither see, nor hear, nor feel: but the God who hath thy breath in his hand, and all thy ways, thou hast not glorified.

¹⁸ What doth the graven thing avail, because the maker thereof hath graven it, a molten, and a false image? because the forger thereof hath trusted in a thing of his own forging, to make dumb idols.

⁹ And I will visit in that day upon every one that entereth arrogantly over the threshold: them that fill the house of the Lord their God with iniquity and deceit.

⁷ And when you are praying, speak not much, as the heathens. For they think that in their much speaking they may be heard.

⁴ But as for the meats that are sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world and that there is no God but one.

¹⁹ What then? Do I say that what is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? Or that the idol is any thing? ²⁰ But the things which the heathens sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils and not to God. And I would not that you should be made partakers with devils.

² You know that when you were heathens, you went to dumb idols, according as you were led.
