¹ Am I not I free? Am not I an apostle? Have not I seen Christ Jesus our Lord? Are not you my work in the Lord? ² And if unto others I be not an apostle, but yet to you I am. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. ³ My defence with them that do examine me is this. ⁴ Have not we power to eat and to drink? ⁵ Have we not power to carry about a woman, a sister as well as the rest of the apostles and the brethren of the Lord and Cephas? ⁶ Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to do this? ⁷ Who serveth as a soldier, at any time, at his own charges? Who planteth a vineyard and eateth not of the fruit thereof? Who feedeth the flock and eateth not of the milk of the flock? ⁸ Speak I these things according to man? Or doth not the law also say; these things? ⁹ For it is written in the law of Moses: Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? ¹⁰ Or doth he say this indeed for our sakes? For these things are written for our sakes: that he that plougheth, should plough in hope and he that thrasheth, in hope to receive fruit. ¹¹ If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great matter if we reap your carnal things? ¹² If others be partakers of this power over you, why not we rather? Nevertheless, we have not used this power: but we bear all things, lest we should give any hindrance to the gospel of Christ. ¹³ Know you not that they who work in the holy place eat the things that are of the holy place; and they that serve the altar partake with the altar? ¹⁴ So also the Lord ordained that they who preach the gospel should live by the gospel. ¹⁵ But I have used none of these things. Neither have I written these things, that they should be so done unto me: for it is good for me to die rather than that any man should make my glory void. ¹⁶ For if I preach the gospel, it is no glory to me: for a necessity lieth upon me. For woe is unto me if I preach not the gospel. ¹⁷ For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation is committed to me. ¹⁸ What is my reward then? That preaching the gospel, I may deliver the gospel without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel. ¹⁹ For whereas I was free as to all, I made myself the servant of all, that I might gain the more. ²⁰ And I became to the Jews a Jew, that I might gain the Jews: To them that are under the law, as if I were under the law, (whereas myself was not under the law,) that I might gain them that were under the law. ²¹ To them that were without the law, as if I were without the law, (whereas I was not without the law of God, but was in the law of Christ,) that I might gain them that were without the law. ²² To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak. I became all things to all men, that I might save all. ²³ And I do all things for the gospel's sake, that I may be made partaker thereof. ²⁴ Know you not that they that run in the race, all run indeed, but one receiveth the prize. So run that you may obtain. ²⁵ And every one that striveth for the mastery refraineth himself from all things. And they indeed that they may receive a corruptible crown: but we an incorruptible one. ²⁶ I therefore so run, not as at an uncertainty: I so fight, not as one beating the air. ²⁷ But I chastise my body and bring it into subjection: lest perhaps, when I have preached to others, I myself should become a castaway.

⁵⁶ Stay me not, said he, because the Lord hath prospered my way: send me away, that I may go to my master.

¹³ But he said: I beseech thee, Lord, send whom thou wilt send. ¹⁴ The Lord being angry at Moses, said: Aaron the Levite is thy brother, I know that he is eloquent: behold he cometh forth to meet thee, and seeing thee, shall be glad at heart.

¹⁶ And the part of the flour that is left, Aaron and his sons shall eat, without leaven: and he shall eat it in the holy place of the court of the tabernacle. ¹⁷ And therefore it shall not be leavened, because part thereof is offered for the burnt sacrifice of the Lord. It shall be most holy, as that which is offered for sin and for trespass. ¹⁸ The males only of the race of Aaron shall eat it. It shall be an ordinance everlasting in your generations concerning the sacrifices of the Lord: Every one that toucheth them shall be sanctified.

²⁶ The priest that offereth it, shall eat it in a holy place, in the court of the tabernacle.

⁶ Every male of the priestly race, shall eat this flesh in a holy place, because it is most holy. ⁷ As the sacrifice for sin is offered, so is also that for a trespass: the same shall be the law of both these sacrifices. It shall belong to the priest that offereth it. ⁸ The priest that offereth the victim of holocaust, shall have the skin thereof.

⁹ All the firstfruits also, which the children of Israel offer, belong to the priest: ¹⁰ And whatsoever is offered into the sanctuary by every one, and is delivered into the hands of the priest, it shall be his.

⁸ And the Lord said to Aaron: Behold I have given thee the charge of my firstfruits. All things that are sanctified by the children of Israel, I have delivered to thee and to thy sons for the priestly office, by everlasting ordinances. ⁹ These therefore shalt thou take of the things that are sanctified, and are offered to the Lord. Every offering, and sacrifice, and whatsoever is rendered to me for sin and for trespass, and becometh holy of holies, shall be for thee and thy sons. ¹⁰ Thou shalt eat it in the sanctuary: the males only shall eat thereof, because it is a consecrated thing to thee. ¹¹ But the firstfruits, which the children of Israel shall vow and offer, I have given to thee, and to thy sons, and to thy daughters, by a perpetual law. He that is clean in thy house, shall eat them. ¹² All the best of the oil, and of the wine, and of the corn, whatsoever firstfruits they offer to the Lord, I have given them to thee. ¹³ All the firstripe of the fruits, that the ground bringeth forth, and which are brought to the Lord, shall be for thy use: he that is clean in thy house, shall eat them. ¹⁴ Every thing that the children of Israel shall give by vow, shall be thine. ¹⁵ Whatsoever is firstborn of all flesh, which they offer to the Lord, whether it be of men, or of beasts, shall belong to thee: only for the firstborn of man thou shalt take a price, and every beast that is unclean thou shalt cause to be redeemed, ¹⁶ And the redemption of it shall be after one month, for five sicles of silver, by the weight of the sanctuary. A sicle hath twenty obols. ¹⁷ But the firstling of a cow, and of a sheep and of a goat thou shalt not cause to be redeemed, because they are sanctified to the Lord. Their blood only thou shalt pour upon the altar, and their fat thou shalt burn for a most sweet odour to the Lord. ¹⁸ But the flesh shall fall to thy use, as the consecrated breast, and the right shoulder shall be thine. ¹⁹ All the firstfruits of the sanctuary which the children of Israel offer to the Lord, I have given to thee and to thy sons and daughters, by a perpetual ordinance. It is a covenant of salt for ever before the Lord, to thee and to thy sons. ²⁰ And the Lord said to Aaron: You shall possess nothing in their land, neither shall you have a portion among them: I am thy portion and inheritance in the midst of the children of Israel.

²⁸ And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said: What have I done to thee? Why strikest thou me, lo, now this third time? ²⁹ Balaam answered: Because thou hast deserved it, and hast served me ill: I would I had a sword that I might kill thee. ³⁰ The ass said: Am not I thy beast, on which thou hast been always accustomed to ride until this present day? tell me if I ever did the like thing to thee. But he said: Never. ³¹ Forthwith the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel standing in the way with a drawn sword, and he worshipped him falling flat on the ground. ³² And the angel said to him: Why beatest thou thy ass these three times? I am come to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse, and contrary to me: ³³ And unless the ass had turned out of the way, giving place to me who stood against thee, I had slain thee, and she should have lived. ³⁴ Balaam said: I have sinned, not knowing that thou didst stand against me: and now if it displease thee that I go, I will return. ³⁵ The angel said: Go with these men, and see thou speak no other thing than what I shall command thee. He went therefore with the princes.

¹⁴ The seventh is the day of the sabbath, that is, the rest of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not do any work therein, thou nor thy son nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant nor thy maidservant, nor thy ox, nor thy ass, nor any of thy beasts, nor the stranger that is within thy gates: that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest, even as thyself.

⁹ Wherefore Levi hath no part nor possession with his brethren: because the Lord himself is his possession, as the Lord thy God promised him.

¹ The priests and Levites, and all that are of the same tribe, shall have no part nor inheritance with the rest of Israel, because they shall eat the sacrifices of the Lord, and his oblations, ² And they shall receive nothing else of the possession of their brethren: for the Lord himself is their inheritance, as he hath said to them. ³ This shall be the priest's due from the people, and from them that offer victims: whether they sacrifice an ox, or a sheep, they shall give to the priest the shoulder and the breast: ⁴ The firstfruits also of corn, of wine, and of oil, and a part of the wool from the shearing of their sheep. ⁵ For the Lord thy God hath chosen him of all thy tribes, to stand and to minister to the name of the Lord, him and his sons for ever.

⁶ What man is there, that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not as yet made it to be common, whereof all men may eat? let him go, and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man execute his office.

¹ Thou shalt not pass by if thou seest thy brother's ox, or his sheep go astray: but thou shalt bring them back to thy brother. ² And if thy brother be not nigh, or thou know him not: thou shalt bring them to thy house, and they shall be with thee until thy brother seek them, and receive them. ³ Thou shalt do in like manner with his ass, and with his raiment, and with every thing that is thy brother's, which is lost: if thou find it, neglect it not as pertaining to another. ⁴ If thou see thy brother's ass or his ox to be fallen down in the way, thou shalt not slight it, but shalt lift it up with him.

⁴ Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out thy corn on the floor.

²⁸ And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, and burn incense to me, and to wear the ephod before me: and I gave to thy father's house of all the sacrifices of the children of Israel.

¹³ His servants came to him, and said to him: Father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, surely thou shouldst have done it: how much rather what he now hath said to thee: Wash, and thou shalt be clean?

⁹ And thou my son Solomon, know the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart, and a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the thoughts of minds. If thou seek him, thou shalt find him: but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

⁵ And gold for wheresoever there is need of gold: and silver for wheresoever there is need of silver, for the works to be made by the hands of the artificers: now if any man is willing to offer, let him fill his hand to day, and offer what he pleaseth to the Lord.

⁹ And the people rejoiced, when they promised their offerings willingly: because they offered them to the Lord with all their heart: and David the king rejoiced also with a great joy.

¹⁴ Who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to promise thee all these things? all things are thine: and we have given thee what we received of thy hand.

⁸ And they all assembled themselves together, to come, and to fight against Jerusalem, and to prepare ambushes.

² And the people blessed all the men that willingly offered themselves to dwell in Jerusalem.

^{5 (19:6)} He hath set his tabernacle in the sun: and he as a bridegroom coming out of his bridechamber, Hath rejoiced as a giant to run the way:

¹⁶ But to the sinner God hath said: Why dost thou declare my justices, and take my covenant in thy mouth?

²⁷ All expect of thee that thou give them food in season.

³² I have run the way of thy commandments, when thou didst enlarge my heart.

¹⁵ The eyes of all hope in thee, O Lord: and thou givest them meat in due season. ¹⁶ Thou openest thy hand, and fillest with blessing every living creature.

⁸ Who covereth the heaven with clouds, and prepareth rain for the earth. Who maketh grass to grow on the mountains, and herbs for the service of men. ⁹ Who giveth to beasts their food: and to the young ravens that call upon him.

³⁰ The fruit of the just man is a tree of life: and he that gaineth souls is wise.

¹⁸ He that keepeth the fig tree, shall eat the fruit thereof: and he that is the keeper of his master, shall be glorified.

²⁷ Let the milk of the goats be enough for thy food, and for the necessities of thy house, and for maintenance for thy handmaids.

¹¹ I turned me to another thing, and I saw that under the sun, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the learned, nor favour to the skilful: but time and chance in all.

⁹ Thou hast wounded my heart, my sister, my spouse, thou hast wounded my heart with one of thy eyes, and with one hair of thy neck. ¹⁰ How beautiful are thy breasts, my sister, my spouse! thy breasts are more beautiful than wine, and the sweet smell of thy ointments above all aromatical spices.

¹² My sister, my spouse, is a garden enclosed, a garden enclosed, a fountain sealed up.

¹ Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat the fruit of his apple trees. I am come into my garden, O my sister, my spouse, I have gathered my myrrh, with my aromatical spices: I have eaten the honeycomb with my honey, I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends, and drink, and be inebriated, my dearly beloved. ² I sleep, and my heart watcheth: the voice of my beloved knocking: Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is full of dew, and my locks of the drops of the nights.

¹² My vineyard is before me. A thousand are for thee, the peaceable, and two hundred for them that keep the fruit thereof.

⁵ And I said: Woe is me, because I have held my peace; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people that hath unclean lips, and I have seen with my eyes the King the Lord of hosts.

⁸ And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send? and who shall go for us? And I said: Lo, here am I, send me.

²² And for the abundance of milk he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that shall be left in the midst of the land.

²⁰ To the law rather, and to the testimony. And if they speak not according to this word, they shall not have the morning light.

¹⁷ Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak to them all that I command thee. Be not afraid at their presence: for I will make thee not to fear their countenance.

³⁰ Call them reprobate silver, for the Lord hath rejected them.

⁵ If thou hast been wearied with running with footmen, how canst thou contend with horses? and if thou hast been secure in a land of peace, what wilt thou do in the swelling of the Jordan?

⁷ Thou hast deceived me, O Lord, and I am deceived: thou hast been stronger than I, and thou hast prevailed. I am become a laughingstock all the day, all scoff at me.

⁹ Then I said: I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name: and there came in my heart as a burning fire, shut up in my bones, and I was wearied, not being able to bear it.

² Therefore thus saith the Lord the God of Israel to the pastors that feed my people: You have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold I will visit upon you for the evil of your doings, saith the Lord. ³ And I will gather together the remnant of my flock, out of all the lands into which I have cast them out: and I will make them return to their own fields, and they shall increase and be multiplied.

¹⁴ The spirit also lifted me, and took me up: and I went away in bitterness in the indignation of my spirit: for the hand of the Lord was with me, strengthening me.

¹⁰ And I have spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and I have used similitudes by the ministry of the prophets.

⁸ The lion shall roar, who will not fear? The Lord God hath spoken, who shall not prophesy?

¹⁵ And the Lord took me when I followed the flock, and the Lord said to me: Go, prophesy to my people Israel.

³ And Jonas rose up to flee into Tharsis from the face of the Lord, and he went down to Joppe, and found a ship going to Tharsis: and he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tharsis from the face of the Lord,

¹ And Jonas was exceedingly troubled, and was angry: ² And he prayed to the Lord, and said: I beseech thee, O Lord, is not this what I said, when I was yet in my own country? therefore I went before to flee into Tharsis: for I know that thou art a gracious and merciful God, patient, and of much compassion, and easy to forgive evil. ³ And now, O Lord, I beseech thee take my life from me: for it is better for me to die than to live.

¹¹ And shall I not spare Ninive, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons, that know how to distinguish between their right hand and their left, and many beasts?

¹⁰ Who is there among you, that will shut the doors, and will kindle the fire on my altar gratis? I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts: and I will not receive a gift of your hand.

⁸ Shall a man afflict God, for you afflict me. And you have said: Wherein do we afflict thee? in tithes and in firstfruits. ⁹ And you are cursed with want, and you afflict me, even the whole nation of you.

¹⁷ Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. ¹⁸ For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. ¹⁹ He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I tell you, that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

²⁶ Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they? ²⁷ And which of you by taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit? ²⁸ And for raiment why are you solicitous? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. ²⁹ But I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these. ³⁰ And if the grass of the field, which is to day, and to morrow is cast into the oven, God doth so clothe: how much more you, O ye of little faith?

²¹ Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven. ²² Many will say to me in that day: Lord, Lord, have not we prophesied in thy name, and cast out devils in thy name, and done many miracles in thy name? ²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.

¹⁴ And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother lying, and sick of a fever;

¹⁰ Nor scrip for your journey, nor two coats, nor shoes, nor a staff; for the workman is worthy of his meat.

⁴¹ He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive the reward of a prophet: and he that receiveth a just man in the name of a just man, shall receive the reward of a just man.

¹² And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away.

⁴⁶ As he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him. ⁴⁷ And one said unto him: Behold thy mother and thy brethren stand without, seeking thee. ⁴⁸ But he answering him that told him, said: Who is my mother, and who are my brethren? ⁴⁹ And stretching forth his hand towards his disciples, he said: Behold my mother and my brethren. ⁵⁰ For whosoever shall do the will of my Father, that is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.

⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Jude:

⁶ But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea.

¹⁵ But if thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother.

²⁶ It shall not be so among you: but whosoever is the greater among you, let him be your minister. ²⁷ And he that will be first among you shall be your servant. ²⁸ Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a redemption for many.

²² And unless those days had been shortened, no flesh should be saved: but for the sake of the elect those days shall be shortened.

²⁵ Behold I have told it to you, beforehand.

³⁰ And Simon's wife's mother lay in a fit of a fever: and forthwith they tell him of her.

³ Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? are not also his sisters here with us? And they were scandalized in regard of him.

³⁵ For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel shall save it.

¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes,

²⁵ For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world and lose himself and cast away himself?

⁶² Jesus said to him: No man putting his hand to the plough and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.

⁷ And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house.

⁵² Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered in: and those that were entering in, you have hindered.

²⁴ Consider the ravens, for they sow not, neither do they reap, neither have they storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much are you more valuable than they? ²⁵ And which of you by taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? ²⁶ If then ye be not able to do so much as the least thing, why are you solicitous for the rest? ²⁷ Consider the lilies, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. But I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these. ²⁸ Now, if God clothe in this manner the grass that is to-day in the field and to-morrow is cast into the oven: how much more you, O ye of little faith?

⁴² And the Lord said: Who thinkest thou is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season?

⁴⁵ But if that servant shall say in his heart: My Lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the men-servants and maid-servants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk: ⁴⁶ The lord of that servant will come in the day that he hopeth not, and at the hour that he knoweth not: and shall separate him and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers. ⁴⁷ And that servant, who knew the will of his lord and prepared not himself and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

²⁴ Strive to enter by the narrow gate: for many, I say to you, shall seek to enter and shall not be able.

²⁶ Then you shall begin to say: We have eaten and drunk in thy presence: and thou hast taught in our streets. ²⁷ And he shall say to you: I know you not, whence you are. Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.

⁷ But which of you, having a servant ploughing or feeding cattle, will say to him, when he is come from the field: Immediately go. Sit down to meat. ⁸ And will not rather say to him: Make ready my supper and gird thyself and serve me, whilst I eat and drink; and afterwards thou shalt eat and drink?

⁴² And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona. Thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.

¹² After this, he went down to Capharnaum, he and his mother and his brethren and his disciples: and they remained there not many days.

³⁵ Do not you say: There are yet four months, and then the harvest cometh? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and see the countries. For they are white already to harvest. ³⁶ And he that reapeth receiveth wages and gathereth fruit unto life everlasting: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. ³⁷ For in this is the saying true: That it is one man that soweth, and it is another that reapeth. ³⁸ I have sent you to reap that in which you did not labour. Others have laboured: and you have entered into their labours.

²⁷ Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto life everlasting, which the Son of man will give you. For him hath God, the Father, sealed.

¹⁴ If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.

¹⁵ When therefore they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs. ¹⁶ He saith to him again: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith to him: yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs. ¹⁷ He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he had said to him the third time: Lovest thou me? And he said to him: Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Feed my sheep.

¹⁴ All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

²⁵ To take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas hath by transgression fallen, that he might go to his own place.

²⁰ For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

³⁶ And Joseph, who, by the apostles, was surnamed Barnabas (which is, by interpretation, The son of consolation), a Levite, a Cyprian born,

³ But Saul made havock of the church, entering in from house to house: and dragging away men and women, committed them to prison.

³ And as he went on his journey, it came to pass that he drew nigh to Damascus. And suddenly a light from heaven shined round about him.

⁵ Who said: Who art thou, Lord? And he: I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. It is hard for thee to kick against the goad. ⁶ And he, trembling and astonished, said: Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?

¹⁵ And the Lord said to him: Go thy way: for this man is to me a vessel of election, to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel.
