⁵ Wherefore it is necessary to be subject, not only on account of wrath, but also on account of conscience.

⁵ And it came to pass afterwards that David`s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul`s skirt. ⁶ And he said to his men, Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing to my master, Jehovah`s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, for he is the anointed of Jehovah.

² I [say], Keep the king`s commandment, and [that] on account of the oath of God.

¹⁶ For this cause I also exercise [myself] to have in everything a conscience without offence towards God and men.

¹ Put them in mind to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient to rule, to be ready to do every good work, ² to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, [to be] mild, shewing all meekness towards all men.

¹⁸ Pray for us: for we persuade ourselves that we have a good conscience, in all things desirous to walk rightly.

¹³ Be in subjection [therefore] to every human institution for the Lord`s sake; whether to [the] king as supreme, ¹⁴ or to rulers as sent by him, for vengeance on evildoers, and praise to them that do well. ¹⁵ Because so is the will of God, that by well-doing ye put to silence the ignorance of senseless men;

¹⁹ For this [is] acceptable, if one, for conscience sake towards God, endure griefs, suffering unjustly.

¹⁶ having a good conscience, that [as to that] in which they speak against you as evildoers, they may be ashamed who calumniate your good conversation in Christ.
