⁴ If Edom say, We are broken down, but we will build again the ruined places, -- thus saith Jehovah of hosts: They shall build, but I will throw down; and [men] shall call them the territory of wickedness, and the people against whom Jehovah hath indignation for ever.

⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and had peace?

¹⁴ Behold, he breaketh down, and it is not built again; he shutteth up a man, and there is no opening.

²⁹ When he giveth quietness, who then will disturb? and when he hideth [his] face, who shall behold him? and this towards a nation, or towards a man alike;

¹ {A Song of degrees. Of Solomon.} Unless Jehovah build the house, in vain do its builders labour in it; unless Jehovah keep the city, the keeper watcheth in vain:

⁷ Remember, O Jehovah, against the sons of Edom, the day of Jerusalem; who said, Lay [it] bare, Lay [it] bare, down to its foundation!

³⁰ There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against Jehovah.

⁹ And all the people shall know [it], Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and stoutness of heart, ¹⁰ The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones; the sycamore trees are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.

⁴ They can but crouch under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

¹⁵ -- Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? As if the rod should wield them that lift it up; as if the staff should lift up [him who is] not wood! ¹⁶ Therefore shall the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness, and under his glory he shall kindle a burning, like the burning of a fire:

¹⁴ but they shall fly upon the shoulder of the Philistines towards the west; together shall they spoil the sons of the east; they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab, and the children of Ammon shall obey them.

⁵ For my sword is bathed in the heavens; behold, it shall come down upon Edom, and upon the people of my ban, to judgment.

¹⁰ it shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.

¹ Who is this that cometh from Edom, with deep-red garments from Bozrah, this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? -- I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. ² -- Wherefore is redness in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winevat? ³ I have trodden the winepress alone, and of the peoples not a man was with me; and I have trodden them in mine anger, and trampled them in my fury; and their blood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all mine apparel. ⁴ For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed had come. ⁵ And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: and mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. ⁶ And I have trodden down the peoples in mine anger, and made them drunk in my fury; and their blood have I brought down to the earth.

¹⁷ And there is hope for thy latter end, saith Jehovah, and thy children shall come again to their own border.

³⁷ Who is he that saith, and there cometh to pass, what the Lord hath not commanded?

²¹ Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz: the cup shall pass also unto thee; thou shalt be drunken, and make thyself naked. ²² The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity. He will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will discover thy sins.

¹⁰ Ye shall fall by the sword; I will judge you in the borders of Israel; and ye shall know that I [am] Jehovah.

¹⁴ And I will execute my vengeance upon Edom, by the hand of my people Israel; and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord Jehovah.

⁹ I will make thee perpetual desolations, and thy cities shall not be inhabited: and ye shall know that I [am] Jehovah.

² Pass unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go to Hamath the great; and go down to Gath of the Philistines: are they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?

³ and I hated Esau; and made his mountains a desolation, and [gave] his inheritance to the jackals of the wilderness.

³⁰ He that is not with me is against me, and he that gathers not with me scatters.

¹³ Go to now, ye who say, To-day or to-morrow will we go into such a city and spend a year there, and traffic and make gain, ¹⁴ ye who do not know what will be on the morrow, ([for] what [is] your life? It is even a vapour, appearing for a little while, and then disappearing,) ¹⁵ instead of your saying, If the Lord should [so] will and we should live, we will also do this or that. ¹⁶ But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil.
