² And Jacob said to his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and cleanse yourselves, and change your garments; ³ and we will arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar to the ?God that answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way that I went. ⁴ And they gave to Jacob all the strange gods that were in their hand, and the rings that were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the terebinth that [is] by Shechem.

²³ Ye shall not make beside me gods of silver, and ye shall not make to you gods of gold.

¹⁵ And the children of Israel said to Jehovah, We have sinned. Do thou unto us according to all that is good in thy sight; only deliver us, we pray thee, this day. ¹⁶ And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served Jehovah; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

³ And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If ye return to Jehovah with all your heart, put away the strange gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and apply your hearts unto Jehovah, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines. ⁴ And the children of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtoreths and served Jehovah only.

⁵⁸ that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his ordinances, which he commanded our fathers.

³⁶ Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to gain.

⁴ Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise deeds of wickedness with men that are workers of iniquity; and let me not eat of their dainties.

² so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom [and] thou apply thy heart to understanding;

² Take with you words, and turn to Jehovah; say unto him, Forgive all iniquity, and receive [us] graciously; so will we render the calves of our lips. ³ Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, [Thou art] our God; because in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.

⁸ Ephraim [shall say], What have I to do any more with idols? (I answer [him], and I will observe him.) I am like a green fir-tree. -- From me is thy fruit found.

¹⁹ What then do I say? that what is sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? ²⁰ But that what [the nations] sacrifice they sacrifice to demons, and not to God. Now I do not wish you to be in communion with demons. ²¹ Ye cannot drink [the] Lord`s cup, and [the] cup of demons: ye cannot partake of [the] Lord`s table, and of [the] table of demons.

¹⁶ and what agreement of God`s temple with idols? for *ye* are [the] living God`s temple; according as God has said, I will dwell among them, and walk among [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be to me a people. ¹⁷ Wherefore come out from the midst of them, and be separated, saith [the] Lord, and touch not [what is] unclean, and *I* will receive you; ¹⁸ and I will be to you for a Father, and ye shall be to me for sons and daughters, saith [the] Lord Almighty.

²⁸ Wherefore let us, receiving a kingdom not to be shaken, have grace, by which let us serve God acceptably with reverence and fear. ²⁹ For also our God [is] a consuming fire.
