⁴⁹ Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride, fulness of bread, and careless ease was in her and in her daughters, but she did not strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of the Jordan that it was thoroughly watered, before Jehovah had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah; as the garden of Jehovah, like the land of Egypt, as one goes to Zoar.

²⁰ And Jehovah said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grievous,

⁹ And they said, Back there! And they said [again], This one came to sojourn, and he must be a judge? Now we will deal worse with thee than with them. And they pressed hard on the man -- on Lot; and drew near to break the door.

¹⁵ Then Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked -- Thou art waxen fat, Thou art grown thick, And thou art covered with fatness; -- He gave up +God who made him, And lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

⁶ For Jehovah is high; but he looketh upon the lowly, and the proud he knoweth afar off.

⁵ Every proud heart is an abomination to Jehovah: hand for hand, he shall not be held innocent.

¹⁸ Pride [goeth] before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

¹² Before destruction the heart of man is haughty; and before honour [goeth] humility.

⁴ Lofty eyes, and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, is sin.

¹³ Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also himself shall cry, and shall not be heard.

⁹ The look of their face doth witness against them, and they declare their sin as Sodom: they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have brought evil upon themselves.

¹⁴ Jehovah will enter into judgment with the elders of his people and their princes, [saying:] It is ye that have eaten up the vineyard: the spoil of the poor is in your houses. ¹⁵ What mean ye that ye crush my people, and grind the faces of the afflicted? saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

⁶ We have heard of the arrogance of Moab, -- [he is] very proud, -- of his pride, and his arrogance, and his wrath: his pratings are vain.

¹³ and behold joy and rejoicing, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: -- Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die. ¹⁴ And it was revealed in mine ears by Jehovah of hosts: Assuredly this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

⁷ and hath not oppressed any; he hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath not exercised robbery, hath given his bread to the hungry, and covered the naked with a garment;

² Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyre, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because thy heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a ?god, I sit [in] the seat of God, in the heart of the seas, (and thou art a man, and not ?God,) and thou settest thy heart as the heart of God:

⁹ Wilt thou then say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and not ?God, in the hand of him that pierceth thee.

¹⁷ Thy heart was lifted up because of thy beauty; thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I have cast thee to the ground, I have laid thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

³ speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great monster that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which saith, My river is mine own, and I made it for myself.

³⁰ the king spoke and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?

³⁷ Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of the heavens, all whose works are truth, and his paths judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of the heavens; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy nobles, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

¹¹ Forasmuch, therefore, as ye trample upon the poor, and take from him presents of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, and ye shall not drink the wine of them. ¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions and your sins mighty: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside [the right of] the needy in the gate.

³ Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; ⁴ that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves from the midst of the stall; ⁵ that chant to the sound of the lute, [and] invent them instruments of music, like David; ⁶ that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but are not grieved for the breach of Joseph.

⁴ Hear this, ye that pant after the needy, even to cause to fail the poor of the land, ⁵ saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat? making the ephah small and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances for deceit: ⁶ that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; and that we may sell the refuse of the wheat.

³ The pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; -- he that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

² Ye who hate the good, and love evil; who pluck off their skin from them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ and who eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones, and chop them in pieces as for the pot, and as flesh within the cauldron. ⁴ Then shall they cry unto Jehovah, but he will not answer them; and he will hide his face from them at that time, according as they have wrought evil in their doings.

¹⁶ And he spoke a parable to them, saying, The land of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. ¹⁷ And he reasoned within himself saying, What shall I do? for I have not [a place] where I shall lay up my fruits. ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will take away my granaries and build greater, and there I will lay up all my produce and my good things; ¹⁹ and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much good things laid by for many years; repose thyself, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said to him, Fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; and whose shall be what thou hast prepared?

¹⁹ Now there was a rich man and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, making good cheer in splendour every day. ²⁰ And [there was] a poor man, by name Lazarus, [who] was laid at his gateway full of sores, ²¹ and desiring to be filled with the crumbs which fell from the table of the rich man; but the dogs also coming licked his sores.

²⁸ and in like manner as took place in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;

³⁴ But take heed to yourselves lest possibly your hearts be laden with surfeiting and drinking and cares of life, and that day come upon you suddenly unawares;

⁵ Likewise [ye] younger, be subject to [the] elder, and all of you bind on humility towards one another; for God sets himself against [the] proud, but to [the] humble gives grace.
