⁸ whom I have sent to you for this very purpose, that he might know your state, and that he might encourage your hearts:

¹ Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.

² to proclaim the acceptable year of Jehovah, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; ³ to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, that beauty should be given unto them instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of the spirit of heaviness: that they might be called terebinths of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.

¹⁷ For this reason I have sent to you Timotheus, who is my beloved and faithful child in [the] Lord, who shall put you in mind of my ways [as] they [are] in Christ, according as I teach everywhere in every assembly.

⁴ who encourages us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to encourage those who are in any tribulation whatever, through the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged of God.

⁷ so that on the contrary ye should rather shew grace and encourage, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with excessive grief.

¹⁸ I begged Titus, and sent the brother with [him]: did Titus at all make gain of you? have we not walked in the same spirit? [have we] not in the same steps?

²² whom I have sent to you for this very thing, that ye may know of our affairs and that he may encourage your hearts.

²⁸ I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that seeing him ye might again rejoice, and that *I* might be the less sorrowful.
