²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as being beside myself) *I* above measure [so]; in labours exceedingly abundant, in stripes to excess, in prisons exceedingly abundant, in deaths oft.

¹⁶ for *I* will shew to him how much he must suffer for my name.

¹⁹ But there came Jews from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds and stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing him to have died.

²³ And having laid many stripes upon them they cast [them] into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely; ²⁴ who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and secured their feet to the stocks.

²³ only that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and tribulations await me.

¹¹ and coming to us and taking the girdle of Paul, and having bound his own hands and feet, said, Thus saith the Holy Spirit, The man whose this girdle is shall the Jews thus bind in Jerusalem, and deliver him up into the hands of [the] Gentiles.

²⁶ hoping at the same time that money would be given him by Paul: wherefore also he sent for him the oftener and communed with him. ²⁷ But when two years were completed, Felix was relieved by Porcius Festus as his successor; and Felix, desirous to oblige the Jews, to acquire their favour, left Paul bound.

¹⁴ And when they had spent many days there, Festus laid before the king the matters relating to Paul, saying, There is a certain man left prisoner by Felix,

¹ But when it had been determined that we should sail to Italy, they delivered up Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion, by name Julius, of Augustus` company.

¹⁶ And when we came to Rome, [the centurion delivered up the prisoners to the praetorian prefect, but] Paul was allowed to remain by himself with the soldier who kept him.

³⁰ And he remained two whole years in his own hired lodging, and received all who came to him,

³⁶ According as it is written, For thy sake we are put to death all the day long; we have been reckoned as sheep for slaughter.

⁵ Who then is Apollos, and who Paul? Ministering servants, through whom ye have believed, and as the Lord has given to each.

¹ Let a man so account of us as servants of Christ, and stewards of [the] mysteries of God.

¹⁰ But by God`s grace I am what I am; and his grace, which [was] towards me, has not been vain; but I have laboured more abundantly than they all, but not *I*, but the grace of God which [was] with me.

³⁰ Why do *we* also endanger ourselves every hour? ³¹ Daily I die, by your boasting which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord. ³² If, [to speak] after the manner of man, I have fought with beasts in Ephesus, what is the profit to me if [those that are] dead do not rise? let us eat and drink; for to-morrow we die.

⁹ But we ourselves had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not have our trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; ¹⁰ who has delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver; in whom we confide that he will also yet deliver;

⁶ who has also made us competent, [as] ministers of [the] new covenant; not of letter, but of spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit quickens.

¹¹ for we who live are always delivered unto death on account of Jesus, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh;

⁴ but in everything commending ourselves as God`s ministers, in much endurance, in afflictions, in necessities, in straits, ⁵ in stripes, in prisons, in riots, in labours, in watchings, in fastings,

⁹ as unknown, and well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as disciplined, and not put to death;

⁷ Do ye look at what concerns appearance? If any one has confidence in himself that he is of Christ, let him think this again in himself, that even as he [is] of Christ, so also [are] we.

⁵ For I reckon that in nothing I am behind those who are in surpassing degree apostles.

²⁴ From the Jews five times have I received forty [stripes], save one. ²⁵ Thrice have I been scourged, once I have been stoned, three times I have suffered shipwreck, a night and day I passed in the deep:

¹¹ I have become a fool; *ye* have compelled me; for *I* ought to have been commended by you; for I have been nothing behind those who were in surpassing degree apostles, if also I am nothing. ¹² The signs indeed of the apostle were wrought among you in all endurance, signs, and wonders, and works of power.

¹ For this reason *I* Paul, prisoner of the Christ Jesus for you nations,

¹ *I*, the prisoner in [the] Lord, exhort you therefore to walk worthy of the calling wherewith ye have been called,

²⁰ for which I am an ambassador [bound] with a chain, that I may be bold in it as I ought to speak.

¹³ so that my bonds have become manifest [as being] in Christ in all the praetorium and to all others;

¹⁷ But if also I am poured out as a libation on the sacrifice and ministration of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice in common with you all.

²⁴ Now, I rejoice in sufferings for you, and I fill up that which is behind of the tribulations of Christ in my flesh, for his body, which is the assembly;

²⁹ Whereunto also I toil, combating according to his working, which works in me in power.

² and sent Timotheus, our brother and fellow-workman under God in the glad tidings of Christ, to confirm you and encourage [you] concerning your faith,

⁶ Laying these things before the brethren, thou wilt be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished with the words of the faith and of the good teaching which thou hast fully followed up.

⁸ Be not therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but suffer evil along with the glad tidings, according to the power of God;

¹⁶ The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he has often refreshed me, and has not been ashamed of my chain;

⁹ in which I suffer even unto bonds as an evil-doer: but the word of God is not bound.

⁹ for love`s sake I rather exhort, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also prisoner of Jesus Christ.

³⁴ For ye both sympathised with prisoners and accepted with joy the plunder of your goods, knowing that ye have for yourselves a better substance, and an abiding one.
