⁹ of sin, because they do not believe in me;

¹⁶ He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

¹⁸ He who believes in him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. ¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. ²¹ But he who does the truth comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been done in God."

⁴⁰ Yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. ⁴¹ "I do not receive glory from men. ⁴² But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. ⁴³ I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. ⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

²³ He said to them, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. ²⁴ Therefore I told to you that you would die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."

⁴² Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came forth from God; I have not come of my own accord, but he sent me. ⁴³ Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you are not able to hear my word. ⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and you want to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. ⁴⁵ But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. ⁴⁶ Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? ⁴⁷ He who is of God hears the words of God; the reason you do not hear them is that you are not of God."

⁴⁷ If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. ⁴⁸ He who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will condemn him on the last day.

²² If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ He who hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. ²⁵ But this is to fulfill the word that is written in their law, 'They hated me without a cause.'

²² "Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know ²³ this man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put him to death. ²⁴ But God raised him up, having loosed the agony of death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. ²⁵ For David says concerning him, 'I saw the Lord always before me; for he is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken. ²⁶ Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh also will live in hope, ²⁷ because you will not abandon my soul to hades, nor let your Holy One see decay. ²⁸ You have made known to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.' ²⁹ "Brethren, I may say to you confidently of the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. ³⁰ And so, because he was a prophet, and knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, ³¹ he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to hades, nor did his flesh see decay. ³² This Jesus God raised up again, and of that we are all witnesses. ³³ Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you see and hear. ³⁴ For David did not ascend into heaven, but he says himself: 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, ³⁵ until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' ³⁶ Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified." ³⁷ Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" ³⁸ And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁴ But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, ¹⁵ but killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. ¹⁶ And his name, by faith in his name, has made this man strong whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Jesus has given him perfect health in the presence of you all. ¹⁷ And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. ¹⁸ But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. ¹⁹ Repent therefore, and turn again, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

⁵¹ "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. You are doing just as your fathers did. ⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, ⁵³ you who received the law as delivered by angels, and yet did not keep it." ⁵⁴ Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed their teeth at him.

⁹ I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth. ¹⁰ And that is just what I did in Jerusalem; I not only shut up many of the saints in prison, by authority from the chief priests, but when they were put to death I cast my vote against them.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped and the whole world may be held accountable to God. ²⁰ Therefore no flesh will be justified in his sight by works of the law, for through the law comes knowledge of sin.

⁹ I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.

¹⁵ who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to all men, ¹⁶ hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved; with the result that they always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last.

¹³ Even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor, I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief;

¹² Take care, brethren, lest there be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

²⁸ Anyone who has rejected the law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. ²⁹ How much severer punishment do you think a man will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as an unclean thing the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?
