⁴ Did you suffer so many things in vainif it really was in vain?

² by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

⁴ For it is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, ⁶ and then have fallen away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put him to an open shame.

³² But remember the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a great struggle with sufferings, ³³ sometimes being publicly exposed to insult and persecution; and at other times standing side by side with those who were so treated. ³⁴ For you had compassion on the prisoners, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. ³⁵ Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. ³⁶ For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. ³⁷ "For yet in a very little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay. ³⁸ But my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him." ³⁹ But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and keep their souls.

²⁰ For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them. ²² It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "A dog turns back to its own vomit," and, "A sow, after having washed, returns to wallowing in the mire."

⁸ Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may receive a full reward.
