³⁰ I passed by the field of the slothful man, And by the vineyard of the man who lacked heart understanding,

⁸ Just as I have seen, those who plow lawlessness And those who sow misery are harvesting it.

²⁷ Behold this, we have investigated it; it is so; Do hear it; and you, get to know it for yourself.

¹⁷ I shall disclose it to you; hear me; This which I have perceived, let me recount it,

²⁵ I was a youth, and now I am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken Or his seed seeking bread."

⁴² The upright see it, and they rejoice, Yet all iniquity, it will shut its mouth."

⁶ Go to the ant, O slothful one; See its ways and be wise;" ⁷ Note that there is no captain for it, Superintendent or ruler;" ⁸ Yet it is preparing its bread in summer; It hoards its food at harvest. ⁹ How long shall you lie down, O slothful one? When shall you rise from your sleep? ¹⁰ A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands, to lie at rest, ¹¹ And your destitution shall come like a wayfarer, And your lack like a man with a shield." ¹² A worthless human, a lawless man Is one who goes about with a perverse mouth, ¹³ Who winks with his eyes, who declares with his feet, Who signals with his fingers;" ¹⁴ Duplicity is in his heart; It is engrossed with evil all the time; It is instigating quarrels. ¹⁵ Therefore calamity for him shall come suddenly; He shall be broken instantly, and there will be no healing." ¹⁶ These are six things Yahweh hates, Even seven that are abhorrences to His soul:" ¹⁷ Exalted eyes, a false tongue, And hands shedding innocent blood;" ¹⁸ A heart engrossed with lawless devisings, Feet hastening to run to evil, ¹⁹ A false witness who blows out lies, And one who instigates quarrels between brothers."

³² But he who commits adultery with another's wife has lack of heart wisdom; He is causing ruin to his soul who does it.

¹³ Wisdom is found on the lips of the understanding, Yet a club is for the body of him who has lack of heart wisdom."

¹¹ He who serves his ground shall be satisfied with bread, Yet he who pursues empty dreams lacks heart wisdom."

¹ And again I saw all the extortions that are done under the sun; Behold, the tears of those being extorted, And there is no comforter for them; Vigor is in the hand of their extortioners, And there is no comforter for them." ² So I lauded the dead, those who had already died, Over the living, those who are still alive;" ³ Yet better than them both are those who still have not come into being, Who have not seen the evil work that is done under the sun." ⁴ And I saw all the toil and all the success of the work done, That it was jealousy of one man over his associate; This too is vanity and a grazing on wind." ⁵ The stupid man folds his hands And eats his own flesh; ⁶ Yet better is one palm full from rest Than both hands full from toil and a grazing on wind. ⁷ And again I saw a vanity under the sun: ⁸ There was one person, but there was no second; There even was no son or brother for him; Also there was no end to all his toil, Yet his eyes were not satisfied with his riches. Then he said, For whom am I toiling And making my soul lack good? This too is vanity, and it is an experience of evil."

¹⁵ I have seen all this in my days of vanity:There is the righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, And there is the wicked man who is prolonged in his evil."

⁹ All this I have seen and have applied my heart to all work that is done under the sun, At a time when a man has authority over another man to do evil to him;" ¹⁰ In such a case I saw the wicked entombed, Those who used to come and go from the holy place And were lauded in the city where they had done such things. This too is vanity." ¹¹ Because there is no sentence executed quickly against the evil deed, Therefore the heart of the sons of humanity in them is fully given to do evil."
