¹ That which has been the word of Yahweh unto Jeremiah concerning the matters of the dearths: ² Mourned has Judah, and her gates have languished, They have mourned to the earth, And the cry of Jerusalem has gone up." ³ And their honorable ones have sent their little ones to the water, They have come unto ditches, They have not found water, They have turned back--their vessels empty! They have been ashamed, And have blushed and covered their head." ⁴ Because the ground has been broken, For there has been no rain in the land, Ashamed have been husbandmen, They have covered their head." ⁵ For even the hind in the field has brought forth--to forsake [it!] For there has been no grass. ⁶ And wild asses have stood on high places, They have swallowed up wind like dragons, Consumed have been their eyes, for there is no herb." ⁷ Surely our iniquities have testified against us, O Yahweh, work for Your name's sake, For many have been our backslidings, Against You we have sinned." ⁸ O Hope of Israel--its saviour in time of trouble, Why are You as a sojourner in the land? And as a traveller turned aside to lodge? ⁹ Why are You as one dumb? As a mighty one not able to save? And You [are] in our midst, O Yahweh, And Your name over us is called, leave us not." ¹⁰ Thus said Yahweh concerning this people:Well they have loved to wander, Their feet they have not restrained, And Yahweh has not accepted them, Now does He remember their iniquity, And inspect their sin." ¹¹ And Yahweh said unto me:You do not pray for this people for good, ¹² When they fast, I hearken not unto their cry, And when they cause to ascend burnt-offering and present, I accept them not, For by sword, and by famine, And by pestilence, I am consuming them." ¹³ And I say, `Ah, Lord Yahweh, Lo, the prophets are saying to them:You do not see a sword, yea, famine is not to you, For true peace I give to you in this place.'" ¹⁴ And Yahweh said unto me:Falsehood the prophets are prophesying in My name, I did not send them, nor command them, Nor have I spoken unto them:A false vision, and divination, and vanity, And the deceit of their own heart, they are prophesying to you." ¹⁵ Therefore, thus said Yahweh concerning the prophets who are prophesying in My name, and I have not sent them, and they are saying, Sword and famine is not in this land:By sword and by famine are these prophets consumed." ¹⁶ And the people to whom they are prophesying, Are cast into out-places of Jerusalem, Because of the famine, and of the sword, And they have none burying them, Them, their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, And I have poured out upon them this evil." ¹⁷ And you have said unto them this word:Tears come down mine eyes night and day, And they do not cease, For, [with] a great breach, Broken has been the virgin daughter of my people, A very grievous stroke." ¹⁸ If I have gone forth to the field, Then, lo, the pierced of the sword! And if I have entered the city, Then, lo, the diseased of famine! For both prophet and priest have gone up and down Unto a land that they knew not." ¹⁹ Have You utterly rejected Judah? Zion has Your soul loathed? Wherefore have You smitten us, And there is no healing to us? Looking for peace, and there is no good, And for a time of healing, and lo, terror." ²⁰ We have known, O Yahweh, our wickedness, The iniquity of our fathers, For we have sinned against You." ²¹ Do not despise, for Your name's sake, Dishonor not the throne of Your honor, Remember, break not Your covenant with us." ²² Are there among the vanities of the nations any causing rain? And do the heavens give showers? Are not You He, O Yahweh our Elohim? And we wait for you, for You--You have done all these!"

²⁴ Elohim heard their moaning, and Elohim was mindful of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

⁴⁵ I will tabernacle in the midst of the sons of Israel and will become their Elohim. ⁴⁶ Then they will realize that I am Yahweh their Elohim Who brought them forth from the land of Egypt that I may tabernacle in their midst. I am Yahweh their Elohim.

¹⁰ And now, leave it to Me, that My anger may grow hot against them, so that I may finish them; and I shall make you into a great nation.

¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac and Israel, Your servants to whom You swore by Yourself. You spoke to them, saying: I shall increase your seed as the stars of the heavens, and all this land, as I have said, I shall give it to your seed, and they will gain it as an allotment for the eon.

³² And now, if You should bear their sin, bear it. Yet if not, wipe me, I pray, from Your scroll which You have written. ³³ Yahweh said to Moses: Anyone who has sinned against Me, I shall wipe him from My scroll. ³⁴ And now, go, guide the people to the place of which I spoke to you. Behold, My messenger shall go before you, and in the day of My visitation, then I will visit on them their sin.

⁴⁰ If they will confess their depravity and the depravity of their fathers in their offense (when they had offended Me and, indeed, when they had gone contrary to M. ⁴¹ so that I Myself also went contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies), if then their uncircumcised heart should submit, and if then they should accept their depravity, ⁴² then I will remember My covenant with Jacob and also My covenant with Isaac; also My covenant with Abraham shall I remember, and the land shall I remember.

⁴² then I will remember My covenant with Jacob and also My covenant with Isaac; also My covenant with Abraham shall I remember, and the land shall I remember. ⁴³ Yet the land, it shall be forsaken of them and shall accept its sabbath years while it is desolate without them, and they themselves shall accept their depravity because, yes because they had rejected My judgments and their soul had loathed My statutes. ⁴⁴ Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them nor loathe them so as to finish them, to annul My covenant with them, for I, Yahweh, am their Elohim. ⁴⁵ For their benefit I will remember the covenant with the former ones whom I brought forth from the land of Egypt before the eyes of the nations to be their Elohim; I am Yahweh.

²³ And Yahweh said to Moses:The hand of Yahweh, is it short? Now shall you see whether My word shall happen to you or not.

¹⁵ If You put this people to death as one man, then the nations who heard the report of You will say, saying. ¹⁶ Because Yahweh was unable to bring this people to the land about which He had sworn to them, He slew them in the wilderness.

¹⁴ For Yahweh your Elohim is walking about within your camp to rescue you and to deliver up your enemies before you; hence your camps will come to be holy so that He should not see among you the nakedness of anything and turn away from following you.

¹² Yahweh shall open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless every work of your hand. You will obligate many nations, yet you shall not borrow.

²³ Your heavens that are over your head will come to be as copper, and the earth that is beneath you as iron. ²⁴ Yahweh shall make the rain of your land to be dust and soil-drifts; from the heavens it shall descend on you until you are exterminated.

³⁶ Yahweh shall conduct you and your king, whom you shall set up over you, to a nation whom you have not known, neither you nor your fathers, and you will serve there other elohim of wood and stone.

⁶⁴ And Yahweh will scatter you among all the peoples from one end of the earth unto the other end of the earth. There you will serve other elohim, those of wood and stone which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers.

²³ its whole land a burnt waste of sulfur and salt; it shall not be sown, neither shall it sprout, nor shall any herbage ascend in it, like the overturning of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overturned in His anger and in His fury-.

¹⁹ Yahweh saw and spurned them because of the vexation caused by His sons and His daughters.

²¹ As for them, they make Me jealous with a non-el. They provoke Me to vexation with their idols of vanity. As for Me, I shall make them jealous with a non-people; with a decadent nation shall I cause them vexation.

²⁷ unless I shrank away from the vexation of the enemy; lest their foes misconstrue, lest they say:Our hand is high, and it was not Yahweh Who contrived all this.

⁹ and the Canaanite and all the inhabitants of the land do hear, and have come round against us, and cut off our name out of the earth; and what do You do for Your great name?.

¹⁷ And he lifts up his eyes, and sees the man, the traveller, in a broad place of the city, and the aged man said, `Whither go you? and whence come you?.

¹² and the men who have not died have been smitten with emerods, and the cry of the city goes up into the heavens.

¹⁶ `At this time tomorrow, I send unto you a man out of the land of Benjamin--and you have anointed him for leader over My people Israel, and he has saved My people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have seen My people, for its cry has come in unto Me..

³⁰ And David is going up in the ascent of the olives, going up and weeping, and he has the head covered, and he is going barefooted, and all the people who [are] with him have covered each his head, and have gone up, going up and weeping;"

¹⁰ And the heart of David smites him, after that he has numbered the people, and David said unto Yahweh, `I have sinned greatly in that which I have done, and now, O Yahweh, cause to pass away, I pray You, the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly..

³⁶ then You do hear in the heavens, and have forgiven the sin of Your servants, and of Your people Israel, for You direct them the good way in which they go, and have given rain on Your land which You have given to Your people for inheritance.

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, `Yahweh, Elohim of Israel, lives, before whom I have stood, there is not these years dew and rain, except according to my word..

⁷ And it comes to pass, at the end of days, that the brook dries up, for there has been no rain in the land,

¹⁴ for thus said Yahweh, Elohim of Israel, The pitcher of meal is not consumed, and the dish of oil is not lacking, till the day of Yahweh's giving a shower on the face of the ground..

¹⁸ And she said unto Elijah, `What--to me and to you, O man of Elohim? you have come unto me to cause mine iniquity to be remembered, and to put my son to death!.

¹ And the days are many, and the word of Yahweh has been unto Elijah in the third year, saying, `Go, appear unto Ahab, and I give rain on the face of the ground;.

⁵ and Ahab said unto Obadiah, `Go through the land, unto all fountains of waters, and unto all the brooks, if so be we find hay, and keep alive horse and mule, and do not cut off any of the cattle.. ⁶ And they apportion to themselves the land, to pass over into it; Ahab has gone in one way by himself, and Obadiah has gone in another way by himself;"

³⁹ And all the people see, and fall on their faces, and say, `Yahweh, He [is] the Elohim, Yahweh, He [is] the Elohim.. <sup>40</sup> And Elijah said to them, `Catch you the prophets of Baal; let not a man escape of them;' and they catch them, and Elijah brings them down unto the stream Kishon, and does slaughter them there. ⁴¹ And Elijah said to Ahab, `Go up, eat and drink, because of the sound of the noise of the shower.. <sup>42</sup> And Ahab goes up to eat, and to drink, and Elijah has gone up unto the top of Carmel, and he stretches himself out on the earth, and he places his face between his knees, <sup>43</sup> and said unto his young man, `Go up, I pray you, look attentively the way of the sea;' and he goes up and looks attentively, and said, `There is nothing;' and he said, `Turn back,' seven times. ⁴⁴ And it comes to pass, at the seventh, that he said, `Lo, a little thickness as the palm of a man is coming up out of the sea.' And he said, `Go up, say unto Ahab, `Bind--and go down, and the shower does not restrain you.. ⁴⁵ And it comes to pass, in the meantime, that the heavens have become black--thick clouds and wind--and the shower is great; and Ahab rides, and goes to Jezreel,

¹⁹ Also Judah has not kept the commands of Yahweh their Elohim, and they walk in the statutes of Israel that they had made. ²⁰ And Yahweh kicks against all the seed of Israel, and afflicts them, and gives them into the hand of spoilers, till that He has cast them out of His presence,

³¹ `Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur, Make with me a blessing, and come out unto me, and eat you each of his vine, and each of his fig-tree, and drink you each the waters of his own well,

¹⁶ and they are mocking at the messengers of Elohim, and despising His words, and acting deceitfully with His prophets, till the going up of the fury of Yahweh against His people--till there is no healing.

⁶ and said:My Elohim, I am ashamed and confounded to raise up my face to You, my Elohim, for our depravities, they are abundant, above our heads, and our guilt is towering unto the heavens. ⁷ From the days of our fathers we have been in great guilt until this day; because of our depravities we ourselves, our kings, our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the countries, to the sword, to captivity, to plundering and to shame of face, just as this day.

¹⁵ O Yahweh Elohim of Israel, You are the Righteous One! For we are left as a remnant for deliverance, as at this day. Here we are before You in our guilt, though no one can stand before You on account of this.

² and the seed of Israel are separated from all sons of a stranger, and stand and confess concerning their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers,

³³ and You [are] righteous concerning all that has come upon us, for truth You have done, and we have done wickedly;" ³⁴ and our kings, our heads, our priests, and our fathers, have not done Your law, nor attended unto Your commands, and to Your testimonies, that You have testified against them;"

¹² Then Mordecai returned to the king's gateway. As for Haman, he went posthaste to his house, mournful with hooded head.

¹⁰ Who is giving rain on the surface of the earth And sending waters over the surface of the open places.

²⁰ But they are ashamed that each one trusted the place; They come to it, and they are abashed.

²⁶ Indeed I expected good, yet evil came, And I waited for light, yet gloom has come instead.

²⁷ He shall sing before mortals and say, I have sinned and depraved what is upright, Yet He did not compensate it fully to me.

²⁸ But they caused the cry of the poor to be brought before Him, So that He heard the cry of the humble.

²⁶ To bring rain on a land where no man is, A wilderness with no human it it, ²⁷ To satisfy areas of ruination and wasteness, And to cause verdure to sprout from the arid place? ²⁸ Is there a father for the rain? Or who has begotten the globules of dew?

¹ Are you acquainted with the bearing of the ibexes of the crag? Do you observe the travailing of the hinds? ² Do you number the months they must fulfill, And do you know the time of their bearing? ³ They crouch; they deliver their young; They put forth the cause of their cramps. ⁴ Their young ones thrive; they grow great in the open; They go forth and return no more to them. ⁵ Who has sent forth the onager free, And who has unloosed the bonds of the wild donkey, ⁶ Whose home I have constituted the steppe, And the salty wastes as his habitat?

⁹ Yahweh shall become an Impregnable Retreat for the crushed, An Impregnable Retreat for seasons of distress.

¹ Why are You standing far off, O Yahweh? Why are You obscuring Yourself in seasons of distress?

³ Indeed, all expecting You shall not be ashamed; They shall be ashamed who are being treacherous without excuse."

¹¹ On account of Your Name, O Yahweh, Thus pardon my depravity, though it be great."

²¹ May integrity and uprightness preserve me, For I expect You."

⁹ O do not conceal Your face from me, O do not turn aside Your servant in anger, You Who have become my Help! O do not abandon me, And do not forsake me, O Elohim of my salvation."

¹⁴ Be expectant toward Yahweh; Be steadfast, and let your heart be resolute. Yea, be expectant toward Yahweh."

⁹ The voice of Yahweh makes the hinds travail in birth, And He is stripping the wildwood bare. In His Temple everyone is saying, Glory."

⁵ I am now acknowledging my sin to You, And I do not cover over my depravity. I said, I shall confess against myself my transgressions to Yahweh, And You, You lift away the depravity of my sin. {Interlude{ "

³⁹ The salvation of the righteous is from Yahweh, Their Stronghold in a season of distress." ⁴⁰ And Yahweh shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked and save them, For they took refuge in Him."

¹⁰ Withdraw Your touch from me; I am exhausted from the stirring up of Your hand.

¹⁴ May they be ashamed and abashed together, who are seeking my soul to sweep it up. May they be turned away backward and be mortified, the ones desiring evil to me."

²³ Do rouse! Why do You sleep, O Yahweh? Do awake! Do not cast us off permanently." ²⁴ Why are You concealing Your face? Are You forgetting our humiliation and our oppression? ²⁵ For our soul has been prostrated to the soil; Our belly clings to the earth. ²⁶ Do arise as our Help! ⁹ Help us, O Elohim of our salvation, on behalf of the glory of Your Name; Rescue us and make a propitiatory shelter over our sins on account of Your Name." ¹⁰ Why should the nations say, Where is their Elohim? Let it be made known among the nations before our eyes:Vengeance for the shed blood of Your servants."

⁴ O Yahweh Elohim of hosts, How long will You smolder against the prayer of Your people? ⁵ You have fed them the bread of tears; You have even made them drink tears by the bowlful.

¹² Why have You breached its stone dikes, So that all who are passing by the way nip off its fruit? ¹³ The boar from the wildwood gorges on it, And the field mammal, it grazes upon it."

³⁸ Yet You have cast off and are rejecting; You are enraged with Your anointed. ³⁹ You have disowned the covenant with Your servant; You have profaned his insignia down to the earth. ⁴⁰ You have breached all his stone dikes; You have made fatal cracks in his defenses.

¹⁵ He shall call on Me, and I shall answer him; I am with him in distress; I shall liberate him and glorify him."

⁶ We have sinned with our fathers; We have sown depravity; We have acted wickedly. ⁷ Our fathers in Egypt did not contemplate Your marvelous works; They did not remember Your many benignities, And they defied the Supreme by the Sea of Weeds." ⁸ Yet He saved them on account of His Name, To make known His masterful deeds." ⁹ He rebuked the Sea of Weeds, and it became drained, And He enabled them to walk through the abyss as through a wilderness." ¹⁰ So He saved them from the hand of the one hating them, And He redeemed them from the hand of their enemy." ¹¹ The waters covered their foes; Not one of them was left. ¹² Then they believed His words; They sang His praise. ¹³ But they quickly forgot His deeds; They did not tarry for His counsel. ¹⁴ They lusted with yearning in the wilderness, And they tried El in the desolation." ¹⁵ So He gave them their request, And He sent sustenance for their soul." ¹⁶ They grew jealous of Moses in the camp, And of Aaron, the holy one of Yahweh." ¹⁷ The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan, And it covered over the congregation of Abiram." ¹⁸ Fire consumed in their congregation; A blaze set the wicked aflame. ¹⁹ They made a calf at Horeb, And they bowed down to a molten image." ²⁰ They changed His glory Into the model of a bull calf that feeds on herbage. ²¹ They forgot the El Who was saving them, Who was doing great deeds in Egypt, ²² Marvelous works in the country of Ham, Fear inspiring deeds by the Sea of Weeds." ²³ He said that He would exterminate them, Except that Moses, His chosen one, Stood in the breach before Him, To turn back His fury from bringing ruin on them." ²⁴ Then they rejected the coveted land; They did not believe His word, ²⁵ And they murmured in their tents; They did not hearken to the voice of Yahweh. ²⁶ So He lifted His hand in swearing to them To cast them down in the wilderness, ²⁷ And to scatter their seed among the nations, And to toss them away throughout the countries." ²⁸ Yet they paired themselves with Baal-peor, And they ate sacrifices offered to dead idols." ²⁹ They provoked Him to vexation with their actions, So that a stroke breached forth among them." ³⁰ But Phinehas stood up and mediated, And the stroke was restrained." ³¹ This was reckoned to him for righteousness For generation after generation for the eon. ³² They prompted wrath at the waters of Meribah, And it was evil for Moses for their sake" ³³ Because they provoked his spirit, And he talked rashly with his lips." ³⁴ They did not exterminate the peoples As Yahweh had commanded them. ³⁵ They mixed with the nations, And they learned their customs." ³⁶ They served their fetishes, And these came to be a trap for them." ³⁷ They sacrificed their sons And their daughters to demons; ³⁸ So they shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and their daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the fetishes of Canaan, And the land was polluted with bloodshed." ³⁹ Thus they defiled themselves by their deeds, And they prostituted themselves by their actions." ⁴⁰ So the anger of Yahweh grew hot against His people, And He abhorred His allotment."

Then all the people will say, Amen. Praise Yah."

¹⁴ May the depravity of his fathers be remembered before Yahweh, And the sin of his mother, let it not be wiped out." ¹⁵ Let these be in front of Yahweh continually, And let their family's remembrance be cut off from the earth,

²⁹ Let my adversaries be clothed with mortification, And let them be muffled with their shame like a robe."

¹ Not to us, O Yahweh, not to us, But to Your Name give glory, On account of Your benignity, Your faithfulness."

⁷ If I walk within distress, You revive me; You send forth Your hand against the anger of my enemies, And You save me with Your right hand."

²⁸ Then they shall call me, yet I shall not answer; They shall seek me early, yet shall not find me."

³¹ Thus they shall eat of the fruit of their way, And they shall be surfeited with the results of their counsels."

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abhorrence to Yahweh, Yet the prayer of the upright is acceptable to Him."

²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abhorrence; How much more so when such a one brings it with scheming.

⁹ He who keeps his ear away from hearing the law--Even his prayer is an abhorrence.

¹¹ Why, to Me, your many sacrifices?saying is Yahweh. "I am surfeited with ascent approaches of rams, and the fat of fatlings, and in the blood of young bulls and he-lambs and he-goats I do not delight." ¹² In case you are coming to appear before Me--Who seeks this from your hand, to tramp My courts? ¹³ Do not continue to bring a futile approach present. Incense--it is an abhorrence to Me! The new moon and the sabbath, the calling of a meeting--! I cannot bear a fast and a day of restraint!" ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointments are hated by My soul. They become an encumbrance to Me. I am tired of bearing them. ¹⁵ And when you spread your palms to Me, I will obscure My eyes from you. Moreover, in case you are increasing your prayers, there is no hearing by Me. Your hands are full of blood. Amidst your fingers extrudes lawlessness."

²⁶ And complain and mourn shall your portals, and empty on the earth shall you sit."

⁷ For the vineyard of Yahweh of hosts is the house of Israel, and each man of Judah His plant delectable. And He is expecting judgment, and behold! Transgression! Righteousness, and behold! A cry!"

¹⁵ The elder and reputable, he is the head, and a prophet directing with falsehood, he is the tail." ¹⁶ And they are coming to make this people happy, leading them astray, and those being made happy will be swallowed up."

⁶ Make a noise and be jubilant, dweller of Zion, for great within you is the Holy One of Israel!"

⁵ The heart of Moab is crying out in it. Its fugitives are unto Zoar, as a heifer of the third year, for the ascent of Luhith. It is ascending into it with lamentation, for the way is a hot outcry with breaking and quaking." ⁶ For the changeable waters are becoming desolations, for dry is the grass. Vanished is the verdure. Nothing becomes green."

⁴ Mournful, disintegrated is the earth. Enfeebled, disintegrated is the habitance. Enfeebled are the heights of the people of the land,

⁷ Mournful is the grape juice; enfeebled is the vine. Sigh does every rejoicing heart.

⁷ And, moreover, these by wine, do err, and by an intoxicant they stray. Priest and prophet err by an intoxicant. They are swallowed up because of the wine. They stray because of the intoxicant. They err in sight, quaver in mediation,

¹⁰ who say to the seers, "You shall not direct us!And to the vision seers, "You shall not perceive correctives for us! Speak to us slick things, perceive trifles." ¹¹ Withdraw from the way, turn aside from the path. Eradicate from our face the Holy One of Israel."

¹⁸ Wherefore Yahweh is tarrying, to be gracious to you; wherefore He is exalting Himself to show compassion to you. For an Elohim of judgment is Yahweh, and where are you leaving your glory? Happy are all tarrying for him!"

²³ And he will give rain for your seed with which you shall sow the ground, and bread, the income of the ground. And it comes to be sleek and stout. Your cattle will graze, in that day, in a widened meadow."

⁹ Mournful, enfeebled is the land. Abashed is Lebanon; it is withered. And Sharon has become as a gorge. And denuded are Bashan and Carmel."

²² This is the word which Yahweh Elohim speaks concerning him:"She despises you! She derides you! The virgin daughter of Zion. Behind you her head wags! The daughter of Jerusalem."

²⁹ Behold! All of them are nothing. And their doings are limited. Wind and chaos are their molten images.

³ For I, Yahweh, am your Elohim, The Holy One of Israel, your Redeemer. And I give Egypt for your shelter; Ethiopia and Seba in your stead."

¹² Sharpening is the smith the adz, and he contrives to do it in the coals. And with picks is he forming it. And contriving it with the vigor of his arm. Moreover, he is famishing and there is no vigor, and he drinks no water, and is faint." ¹³ The carpenter choosing wood, stretches out a tape. He is drawing the carving with red ochre. He is making it with gouges, and with a circle former is drawing it. And he is making it as a model of a man, as the beauty of a human, to dwell in a house." ¹⁴ He cuts down for himself cedars, and is taking juniper and oak, and the tough is his among the wildwood trees, planted by the Lord, and the downpour is making it grow." ¹⁵ And it comes to be for a human to consume. And he is taking of them for warmth. Indeed, he is igniting it and bakes bread. Indeed, he is contriving an el, and is worshiping it. He makes it a carving and is falling on his knees and face to it." ¹⁶ Half of it he burned up in the fire. And on this half of it he is eating flesh. He is roasting a roast and is satisfied. And by its embers he sits. Indeed, he is warming himself, and is saying, `Aha! I am warm! I see light!'" <sup>17</sup> And the remnant of it he makes into an el. To a decaying tree, to it is he falling on his knees and face. And he is worshiping, and praying to it, and saying, `Rescue me, for my el are you!'" ¹⁸ They do not know, nor are they understanding, for He plasters their eyes, from seeing, and their hearts, from intelligence." ¹⁹ And he is not recalling to his heart, and no knowledge is there, nor understanding to say, "Half of it I burned up in the fire, and, indeed, I baked on its embers bread, roasting flesh and eating. And the rest of it I am making into an abhorrence. To a decaying tree am I falling on my knees and face!" ²⁰ Grazing on ashes, a trifling heart turns him aside. And he is not rescuing his soul, nor is he saying, "Is not a falsehood in my right hand?

¹⁵ Surely, You, El, are concealing Yourself, the Elohim of Israel, a Saviour." ¹⁶ They are ashamed and even confounded, all of them together. And they go into confounding, artificers of forms." ¹⁷ Israel is saved by Yahweh, with a salvation eonian. They shall not be ashamed nor confounded for future eons."

²¹ Tell, and bring them close. Indeed, they shall consult together. Who announced this from aforetime? Hitherto, Who told it? Not I, Yahweh? And no one else is Elohim, apart from Me. An El, just, and a Saviour. And none is there, except Me."

¹ Thus says Yahweh, "Where is this scroll of divorce of your mother, with which I let her go? Or which of My creditors is it to whom I sold you? Behold! For your depravities were you sold, and for your transgressions was your mother sent away." ² For what reason, when I came, was there no man? I called, and there was no answer? Is My hand too short to ransom? Or should no vigor be in Me to rescue? Behold! By My rebuke will I drain the sea; I will convert streams into a wilderness. Their fish will dry up, because there is no water, and they will die from thirst."

⁹ Rouse! Rouse! Clothe yourself with strength, arm of Yahweh! Rouse as in days aforetime, the generations of the eons! Are not You He, the Hewer of the audacious, the Wounder of the monster?

³ Why do we fast, yet You do not see? We humble our souls, yet You are not knowing?Behold! In the day of your fast you are finding delight, and all your grievous labors are you exacting of others."

¹ Behold! The hand of Yahweh is not too short to save! And His ear is not too heavy to hear!

¹² For multitudinous are our transgressions in front of You, and our sins answer against us. For our transgressions are with us, and our depravities, we know them:"

¹⁹ We become as those from the eon. Not among them do You rule, nor is Your name called over them."

⁹ You must not be wroth with us, Yahweh, unto excess, and You must not, for the future, be remembering our depravity. Behold! Look, pray! Your people are we all." ¹⁰ The cities of Your holy place come to be a wilderness. Zion becomes as a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation." ¹¹ The house, our holy place, and our beauty, where our forefathers praised You, came to be burned with fire, and all that we covet came to be demolished." ¹² On account of all this wilt You check Yourself, Yahweh? Are You hushing and humiliating us unto excess?

⁶ And I say, `Ah, Lord Yahweh! lo, I have not known--to speak, for I [am] a youth.'"

⁸ The priests have not said, `Where [is] Yahweh?' And those handling the law have not known Me. And the shepherds transgressed against Me, And the prophets have prophesied by Baal, And after those who profit not have gone."

¹³ For two evils has My people done, Me they have forsaken, a fountain of living waters, To hew out for themselves wells--broken wells, That contain not the waters."

¹⁷ Do you not do this to yourself? [By] your forsaking Yahweh your Elohim, At the time He is leading you in the way? ¹⁸ And now, what--to you in the way of Egypt, To drink the waters of Sihor? And what--to you in the way of Asshur, To drink the waters of the River? ¹⁹ Instruct you does your wickedness, And your backslidings reprove you, Know and see that an evil and a bitter thing [Is] your forsaking Yahweh your Elohim, And My fear not being on you, An affirmation of the Lord Yahweh of Hosts."

None seeking her do weary themselves, In her month they find her."

³⁶ What? you are very vile to repeat your way, Even of Egypt you are ashamed, As you have been ashamed of Asshur,

¹ Saying, `Lo, one sends away his wife, And she has gone from him, And she has been to another man, Does he turn back unto her again? Greatly defiled is not that land? And you have committed whoredom with many lovers, And turn again to Me, an affirmation of Yahweh." ² Lift your eyes to the high places, and see, Where have you not been lain with? On the ways you have sat for them, As an Arab in a wilderness, And you defile the land, By your fornications, and by your wickedness." ³ And withheld are showers, and gathered rain has not been. The forehead of a whorish woman you have, You have refused to be ashamed."

⁶ And Yahweh said unto me, in the days of Josiah the king, `Have you seen that which backsliding Israel has done? She is going on every high mountain, and unto the place of every green tree, and commits fornication there."

¹³ Only, know your iniquity, For against Yahweh your Elohim you have transgressed, And you do scatter your ways to strangers, Under every green tree, And to My voice you have not hearkened, An affirmation of Yahweh."

¹⁷ At that time they cry to Jerusalem, `O throne of Yahweh,' And gathered unto her has been all the nations, For the name of Yahweh, to Jerusalem, Nor do they go any more after the stubbornness of their evil heart."

²⁵ We have lain down in our shame, and cover us does our confusion, For against Yahweh our Elohim we have sinned, We, and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, Nor have we hearkened to the voice of Yahweh our Elohim!"

¹⁰ And I say, `Ah, Lord Yahweh, Surely you have entirely forgotten this people and Jerusalem, saying, Peace is for you, And struck has a sword unto the soul!'"

²⁸ For this does the land mourn, And black have been the heavens above, because I have spoken--I have purposed, And I have not repented, Nor do I turn back from it."

¹³ For from their least unto their greatest, Every one is gaining dishonest gain, And from prophet even unto priest, Every one is dealing falsely, ¹⁴ And they heal the breach of the daughter of my people slightly, Saying, `Peace, peace!' and there is no peace." ¹⁵ They were ashamed when they did abomination! Yea, they are not at all ashamed, Yea, blushing they have not known, Therefore they do fall among those falling, In the time I have inspected them, They stumble, said Yahweh."

²⁰ Why [is] this to Me? frankincense from Sheba comes, And the sweet cane from a land afar off, Your burnt-offerings [are] not for acceptance, And your sacrifices have not been sweet to Me."

³⁰ `Silver rejected,' they have called to them, For Yahweh has kicked against them!"

¹⁶ And you do not pray for this people, Nor lift up for them crying and prayer, Nor intercede with Me, for I hear you not."

²¹ Thus said Yahweh of Hosts, Elohim of Israel, Your burnt-offerings add to your sacrifices, And eat you flesh." ²² For I did not speak with your fathers, Nor did I command them in the day of My bringing them out of the land of Egypt, Concerning the matters of burnt-offering and sacrifice,

³³ And the carcase of this people has been for food To a fowl of the heavens, and to a beast of the earth, And there is none troubling."

Be gathered, and we go in to the fenced cities, And we are silent there, For Yahweh our Elohim has made us silent, Yea, He causes us to drink water of gall, For we have sinned against Yahweh." ¹⁵ Looking for peace--and there is no good, For a time of healing, and lo, terror."

¹⁸ My refreshing for me [is] sorrow, For me my heart [is] sick." ¹⁹ Lo, the voice of a cry of the daughter of my people from a land afar off, Is Yahweh not in Zion? is her king not in her? Wherefore have they provoked Me with their graven images, With the vanities of a foreigner?

²¹ For a breach of the daughter of my people have I been broken, I have been black, astonishment has seized me." ²² Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? For wherefore has not the health of the daughter of my people gone up?

¹ Who does make my head waters, And mine eye a fountain of tears? And I weep by day and by night, For the wounded of the daughter of my people."

²² Speak thus--an affirmation of Yahweh, And fallen has the carcase of man, As dung on the face of the field, And as a handful after the reaper, And there is none gathering."

¹⁹ Woe to me for my breaking, Grievous has been my smiting, And I said, Only, this [is] my sickness, and I bear it."

¹¹ Therefore thus said Yahweh:Lo, I am bringing in unto them evil, That they are not able to go out from, And they have cried unto Me, And I do not hearken unto them."

¹⁴ And you, you do not pray for this people, Nor do you lift up for them cry and prayer, For I do not hearken in the time of their calling unto Me for their vexation."

⁴ Till when does the earth mourn, And the herb of the whole field wither? For the wickedness of those dwelling in it, Consumed have been beast and fowl, Because they said, `He does not see our latter end.'"

⁸ Mine inheritance has been to Me as a lion in a forest, She gave forth against Me with her voice, Therefore I have hated her."

¹⁷ And if you do not hear it, In secret places does my soul weep, because of pride, Yea, it weeps sore, And the tear comes down mine eyes, For the flock of Yahweh has been taken captive."

²² And when you do say in your heart, `Wherefore have these met me?' For the abundance of your iniquity Have your skirts been uncovered, Have your heels suffered violence." ²³ Does a Cushite change his skin? and a leopard his spots? You also are able to do good, who are accustomed to do evil." ²⁴ And I scatter them as stubble, Passing away, by a wind of the wilderness." ²⁵ This [is] your lot, the portion of your measures from Me--an affirmation of Yahweh, Because you have forgotten me, And do trust in falsehood."

⁴ Because the ground has been broken, For there has been no rain in the land, Ashamed have been husbandmen, They have covered their head."

⁷ Surely our iniquities have testified against us, O Yahweh, work for Your name's sake, For many have been our backslidings, Against You we have sinned."

¹⁹ Have You utterly rejected Judah? Zion has Your soul loathed? Wherefore have You smitten us, And there is no healing to us? Looking for peace, and there is no good, And for a time of healing, and lo, terror." ²⁰ We have known, O Yahweh, our wickedness, The iniquity of our fathers, For we have sinned against You." ²¹ Do not despise, for Your name's sake, Dishonor not the throne of Your honor, Remember, break not Your covenant with us."

¹ And Yahweh said unto me:Though Moses and Samuel should stand before Me, My soul is not toward this people, Send from before My face, and they go out." ² And it has come to pass, when they say to you, Whither do we go out? that you have said unto them, Thus said Yahweh:Those who [are] for death--to death, And those who are for the sword, to the sword, And those who are for famine, to famine, And those who are for captivity, to captivity." ³ And I have appointed over them four kinds, an affirmation of Yahweh, The sword to slay, and the dogs to drag, And the fowl of the heavens, And the beast of the earth, to consume and to devour."

¹⁶ Your words have been found, and I eat them, And Your word is to me for a joy, And for the rejoicing of my heart, For Your name is called on me, O Yahweh, Elohim of Hosts."

¹⁸ Why has my pain been perpetual? And my wound incurable? It has refused to be healed, You are surely to me as a failing stream, Waters not stedfast."

⁴ Of painful deaths they die, They are not lamented, nor are they buried, For dung on the face of the ground they are, And by sword and by famine are consumed, And their carcase has been for food To the fowl of the heavens, And to the beast of the earth."

¹⁹ O Yahweh, my strength, and my fortress, And my refuge in a day of adversity, Unto You nations do come from the ends of earth, And say, Only falsehood did our fathers inherit, Vanity, and none among them is profitable."

⁸ And has been as a tree planted by waters, And by a rivulet he sends forth his roots, And he does not see when heat comes, And his leaf has been green, And in a year of dearth he is not sorrowful, Nor does he cease from making fruit."

¹² A throne of honor on high from the beginning, The place of our sanctuary, ¹³ The hope of Israel [is] Yahweh, All forsaking You are ashamed, And `My apostates' in the earth are written, For they have forsaken Yahweh, A fountain of living waters."

²¹ Therefore, give up their sons to famine, And cause them to run on the sides of the sword, And their wives are bereaved and widows, And their men are slain by death, Their young men smitten by sword in battle, ²² A cry is heard from their houses, For You bring against them suddenly a troop, For they dug a pit to capture me, And snares they have hidden for my feet."

⁶ `Therefore, lo, days are coming--an affirmation of Yahweh--and this place is not called any more, Tophet, and Valley of the son of Hinnom, but, Valley of slaughter." ⁷ And I have made void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and have caused them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those seeking their life, and I have given their carcase for food to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth,

¹⁴ And in prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing, Committing adultery, and walking falsely, Yea, they strengthened the hands of evil doers, So that they have not turned back Each from his wickedness, They have been to me--all of them--as Sodom, And its inhabitants as Gomorrah."

The prophets of falsehood, Yea, prophets of the deceit of their heart, ²⁷ Who are devising to cause My people To forget My name by their dreams, That they recount each to his neighbor, As their fathers forgot my name for Baal." ²⁸ The prophet with whom [is] a dream, Let him recount the dream, And he with whom [is] My word, Let him truly speak My word. What--to the straw with the corn? An affirmation of Yahweh." ²⁹ Is it not thus? My word [is] as a fire, An affirmation of Yahweh. And as a hammer--it breaks in pieces a rock." ³⁰ Therefore, lo, I [am] against the prophets, An affirmation of Yahweh, Stealing My words each from his neighbor." ³¹ Lo, I [am] against the prophets, An affirmation of Yahweh, Who are making smooth their tongue, And they affirm--an affirmation." ³² Lo, I [am] against the prophets of false dreams, An affirmation of Yahweh, And they recount them, and cause my people to err, By their falsehoods, and by their instability, And I--I have not sent them, Nor have I commanded them, And they are not at all profitable to this people, An affirmation of Yahweh."

⁹ `And you, you do not hearken unto your prophets, and unto your diviners, and unto your dreamers, and unto your observers of clouds, and unto your sorcerers who are speaking unto you, saying, You do not serve the king of Babylon, --" ¹⁰ For falsehood they are prophesying to you, so as to remove you far from off your ground, and I have driven you out, and you have perished."

² `Thus spoke Yahweh of Hosts, Elohim of Israel, saying, I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon;" ³ Within two years of days I am bringing back unto this place all the vessels of the house of Yahweh that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has taken from this place, and does carry to Babylon, ⁴ And Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the removed of Judah, who are entering Babylon, I am bringing back unto this place--an affirmation of Yahweh; for I do break the yoke of the king of Babylon.'" ⁵ And Jeremiah the prophet said unto Hananiah the prophet, before the eyes of the priests, and before the eyes of all the people who are standing in the house of Yahweh,

¹³ `Go, and you have spoken unto Hananiah, saying, Thus said Yahweh, Yokes of wood you have broken, and I have made instead of them yokes of iron;"

¹³ There is none judging your cause to bind up, Healing medicines there are none for you." ¹⁴ all loving you have forgotten you, You they do not seek, For with the stroke of an enemy I smote you, The chastisement of a fierce one, Because of the abundance of your iniquity, Mighty have been your sins!" ¹⁵ What! --you cry concerning your breach! Incurable [is] your pain, Because of the abundance of your iniquity, Mighty have been your sins! I have done these to you."

³⁴ And they do not teach any more Each his neighbor, and each his brother, Saying, Know you Yahweh, For they all know Me, from their least unto their greatest, An affirmation of Yahweh; For I pardon their iniquity, And of their sin I make mention no more."

²¹ `The perfume that you made in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, you, and your fathers, your kings, and your heads, and the people of the land, has not Yahweh remembered it? yea, it comes up on His heart." <sup>22</sup> And Yahweh is not able any more to accept [you], because of the evil of your doings, because of the abominations that you have done, and your land is for a waste, and for an astonishment, and for a reviling, without inhabitant, as [at] this day." <sup>23</sup> `Because that you have made perfume, and because you have sinned against Yahweh, and have not hearkened to the voice of Yahweh, and in His law, and in His statutes, and in His testimonies you have not walked, therefore has this evil met you as [at] this day.'"

⁷ All finding them have devoured them, And their adversaries have said:We are not guilty, Because that they sinned against Yahweh, The habitation of righteousness, And the hope of their fathers--Yahweh."

¹⁶ At the voice He gives forth, A multitude of waters [are] in the heavens, And He causes vapours to come up from the end of the earth, Lightnings for rain He has made, And He brings out wind from His treasures."

⁶ In the fourth month, in the ninth of the month, when the famine is severe in the city, and there has been no bread for the people of the land, ⁷ then is the city broken up, and all the men of war flee, and go forth from the city by night, the way of the gate between the two walls, that [is] by the king's garden--and the Chaldeans [are] by the city round about--and they go the way of the plain."

¹⁰ The foe has spread out his hand over all her coveted things; Indeed she has seen the nations enter her sanctuary, Concerning whom You had instructed that they should not enter Your assembly."

¹⁵ Yahweh has cast aside all my sturdy ones in my midst; He has called an appointed assembly against me to break apart my choice young men; Yahweh has trodden the winetrough of the virgin daughter of Judah. ¹⁶ Over these I am lamenting; my eye, my eye runs down with water; For far from me is any comforter, any restorer of my soul; My sons are desolate, for the enemy has mastery."

²⁰ See O Yahweh, that distress is mine; my bowels, they are in turmoil; My heart is overturned within me, for I have rebelled, yea rebelled; Outside the sword bereaves; in the house it is like death."

⁶ He is casting down His booth as in a garden; He has ruined His appointed festivals; Yahweh has made appointed festivals and sabbath forgotten in Zion, And in the indignation of His anger He is spurning king and priest." ⁷ Yahweh has cast off His altar; He has disowned His sanctuary; He has surrendered the walls of her citadels into the hand of the enemy. They have raised their voice in the House of Yahweh as on the day of an appointed festival.

⁹ Her gates have sunk into the earth; He destroyed and broke her bars; Her king and her chiefs are among the nations; there is no law. Also her prophets find no vision from Yahweh.

¹³ What shall I testify to you? What shall I liken to you, daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I equate to you, that I may comfort you, virgin daughter of Zion? For your brokenness is great as the sea; who shall heal you? ¹⁴ Your prophets envision for you futility and trumpery, And they do not expose your depravity to reverse your captivity, But they are envisioning for you loads of futility and false inducements."

¹⁸ Their heart cries out to Yahweh, the Wall of the daughter of Zion; Let tears descend like a torrent by day and night; Do not give yourself intermission; do not let your eye be still."

²⁰ See, O Yahweh, and look at those whom You have dealt severely thus; Should women be eating their own fruit, their infants cradled in arms? Should priest and prophet be killed in the sanctuary of Yahweh?

Does not one say unto you, Where [is] the daubing that you daubed? ¹³ Therefore, thus said the Lord Yahweh:I have rent with a tempestuous wind in My fury, And an overflowing shower is in Mine anger, And hailstones in My fury--to consume." ¹⁴ And I have broken down the wall that you daubed with chalk, And have caused it to come unto the earth, And revealed has been its foundation, And it has fallen, And you have been consumed in its midst, And you have known that I [am] Yahweh." ¹⁵ And I have completed My wrath on the wall, And on those daubing it with chalk, And I say to you:The wall is not, And those daubing it are not;" ¹⁶ The prophets of Israel who are prophesying concerning Jerusalem, And who are seeing for her a vision of peace, And there is no peace, An affirmation of the Lord Yahweh."

²² Because of paining the heart of the righteous with falsehood, And I have not pained it, And strengthening the hands of the wicked, So as not to turn back from his evil way, To keep him alive, ²³ Therefore, vanity you do not see, And divination you do not divine again, And I have delivered My people out of your hand, And you have known that I [am] Yahweh!'"

⁷ and He said unto me:`Son of man, the place of My throne, And the place of the soles of My feet, Where I dwell in the midst of the sons of Israel to the eon, Defile no more do the house of Israel My holy name, They, and their kings, by their whoredom, And by the carcases of their kings--their high places."

Just is Yahweh our Elohim in all His doings which He does; yet we do not hearken to His voice." ¹⁵ And now, my Lord our Elohim, Who brought Thy people forth from the land of Egypt with a steadfast hand, and art making for Thyself a name as at this day; we sin, we are wicked."

The dying will die; and the suppressed will be suppressed; and the remainder will eat, each woman, of the flesh of her mate." ¹⁰ And I will take my stick, Pleasantness, and will hack it to pieces, to annul my covenant which I contracted with all the peoples." ¹¹ And it will be annulled in that day. And the traffickers of the flock, who are observing me, shall know that it is the word of Yahweh."

³ And it shall come to be, in case a man is prophesying still, then his father and his mother, those generating him, shall say to him, You shall not live, for you speak falsehood in the name of Yahweh. And his father and his mother, those generating him, shall stab him when he prophesies."

⁸ And in case you are bringing close the blind for sacrifice, is there no evil? And in case you are bringing close the lame and the ill, is there no evil? Offer it, I pray, to your viceroy! Will he accept you or lift your face? says Yahweh of hosts." ⁹ And now, beseech, I pray, the face of your El, that He may be gracious to us. From your hand has this come; would He lift our faces because of you? says Yahweh of hosts." ¹⁰ Who, moreover, is among you that shall lock the doors so you shall not light up My altar gratuitously? I have no delight in you, says Yahweh of hosts, and an approach present I will not accept from your hand." ¹¹ For from the rising of the sun unto its setting, great is My name among the nations, and in every place incense is being brought close for My name, and a clean approach present. For My name is great among the nations, says Yahweh of hosts." ¹² Yet you are profaning Me when you say, The table of Yahweh, sullied is it, and its produce. Despised is its food." ¹³ And you say, Behold what tiredness it is! And you puff at Me, says Yahweh of hosts. And you bring the pillaged, and the lame and the ill. And when you bring the approach present, shall I accept it from your hand? says Yahweh of hosts."

⁴⁵ so that you may become sons of your Father Who is in the heavens, for He causes His sun to rise on the wicked and the good, and makes it rain on the just and the unjust.

We also are men, of like emotions as you, bringing the evangel to you to turn you back from these vain things to the living God, Who makes heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, ¹⁶ Who, in bygone generations, leaves all the nations to go their ways, ¹⁷ although He leaves Himself not without the testimony of good acts, giving showers from heaven and fruitbearing seasons, filling our hearts with nourishment and gladness."

²⁰ For this cause, then, I call for you, to see and speak to you. For on account of the expectation of Israel this chain is lying about me."

¹ I am saying, then, Does not God thrust away His people? May it not be coming to that! For I also am an Israelite, out of Abraham's seed, Benjamin's tribe." ² God does not thrust away His people whom He foreknew. Or have you not perceived in Elijah what the scripture is saying, as he is pleading with God against Israel? ³ Lord, Thy prophets they kill, Thine altars they dig down, and I was left alone, and they are seeking my soul." ⁴ But what is that which apprises saying to him? I left for Myself seven thousand men who do not bow the knee to the image of Baal. ⁵ Thus, then, in the current era also, there has come to be a remnant according to the choice of grace." ⁶ Now if it is in grace, it is no longer out of works, else the grace is coming to be no longer grace. Now, if it is out of works, it is no longer grace, else the work is no longer work."

⁴ Who is consoling us in our every affliction to enable us to be consoling those in every affliction, through the consolation with which we ourselves are being consoled by God, ⁵ seeing that, according as the sufferings of Christ are superabounding in us, thus, through Christ, our consolation also is superabounding."

¹⁶ Now what concurrence has a temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God, according as God said, that I will be making My home and will be walking in them, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people."

For all shall be acquainted with Me, From their little to their great, ¹² For I shall be propitious to their injustices, And of their sins and their lawlessnesses should I under no circumstances still be reminded."

A voiceless yoke-beast, uttering with a human voice, forbids the insanity of the prophet." ¹⁷ These are waterless springs, and mists driven by a storm, for whom the gloom of darkness has been kept."

⁷ Yet if we should be walking in the light as He is in the light, we are having fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, is cleansing us from every sin." ⁸ If we should be saying that we have no sin we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us." ⁹ If we should be avowing our sins, He is faithful and just that He may be pardoning us our sins and should be cleansing us from all injustice."
