¹⁶ And they forsake all the commands of Yahweh their Elohim, and make to them a molten image--two calves, and make a shrine, and bow themselves to all the host of the heavens, and serve Baal,

⁴ He took it from their hands and formed it with a stylus and made of it a molten calf. And they said: These are your elohim, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.

⁸ They have withdrawn quickly from the way I instructed them. They have made for themselves a molten calf and bowed themselves down to it. They have sacrificed to it and said: These are your elohim, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.

¹⁹ Guard yourselves lest you should lift up your eyes toward the heavens, and you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of the heavens, and be induced to bow yourself down to them and serve them, which Yahweh your Elohim has apportioned to all other peoples beneath the entire heavens.

²⁸ And the king takes counsel, and makes two calves of gold, and said unto them, `Enough to you of going up to Jerusalem; lo, your elohims, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt..

¹⁵ And Yahweh has smitten Israel as the reed is moved by the waters, and has plucked Israel from off this good ground that He gave to their fathers, and scattered them beyond the River, because that they made their shrines, provoking Yahweh to anger;"

²³ And they build--also they--for themselves high places, and standing-pillars, and shrines, on every high height, and under every green tree;"

¹³ and also Maachah his mother--he turns her aside from being mistress, in that she made a horrible thing for a shrine, and Asa cuts down her horrible thing, and burns [it] by the brook Kidron;"

³¹ And it comes to pass--has it been light his walking in the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat? --then he takes a wife, Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Zidonians, and goes and serves Baal, and bows himself to it,

³³ and Ahab makes the shrine, and Ahab adds to do so as to provoke Yahweh, Elohim of Israel, above all the kings of Israel who have been before him.

⁵³ and serves the Baal, and bows himself to it, and provokes Yahweh, Elohim of Israel, according to all that his father had done.

¹⁸ And Jehu gathers the whole of the people, and said unto them, `Ahab served Baal a little--Jehu does serve him much. <sup>19</sup> and now, all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests, call you unto me; let not a man be lacking, for a great sacrifice I have for Baal; every one who is lacking--he does not live;' and Jehu has done [it] in subtilty, in order to destroy the servants of Baal. <sup>20</sup> And Jehu said, `Sanctify a restraint for Baal;' and they proclaim [it]. ²¹ And Jehu sends into all Israel, and all the servants of Baal come in, and there has not been left a man who has not come in; and they come in to the house of Baal, and the house of Baal is full--mouth to mouth. ²² And he said to him who [is] over the wardrobe, `Bring out clothing to all servants of Baal;' and he brings out to them the clothing. <sup>23</sup> And Jehu goes in, and Jehonadab son of Rechab, to the house of Baal, and said to the servants of Baal, `Search and see, lest there be here with you of the servants of Yahweh--but, the servants of Baal by themselves.. ²⁴ And they come in to make sacrifices and burnt-offerings, and Jehu has set for himself in an out-place eighty men, and said, `The man who lets escape [any] of the men whom I am bringing in unto your hand--his soul for his soul.. <sup>25</sup> And it comes to pass at his finishing to make the burnt-offering, that Jehu said to the runners, and to the captains, `Go in, smite them, let none come out;' and they smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the runners and the captains cast [them] out; and they go unto the city, to the house of Baal, ²⁶ and bring out the standing-pillars of the house of Baal, and burn them, ²⁷ and break down the standing-pillar of Baal, and break down the house of Baal, and appoint it for a draught-house unto this day. ²⁸ And Jehu destroys Baal out of Israel,

¹⁸ And all the people of the land go in to the house of Baal, and break it down, its altars and its images they have thoroughly broken, and Mattan priest of Baal they have slain before the altars; and the priest sets inspectors over the house of Yahweh,

¹⁰ and set up for them standing-pillars and shrines on every high height, and under every green tree,

³ and he turns and builds the high places that Hezekiah his father destroyed, and raises altars for Baal, and makes a shrine, as did Ahab king of Israel, and bows himself to all the host of the heavens, and serves them.

¹⁸ Fire consumed in their congregation; A blaze set the wicked aflame. ¹⁹ They made a calf at Horeb, And they bowed down to a molten image." ²⁰ They changed His glory Into the model of a bull calf that feeds on herbage.

⁹ Formers of carvings, all of them are a chaos. And makers of their coveted idols shall fail to benefit. And their witnesses they will fail to see and fail to know, that they may be ashamed, ¹⁰ Who form an el, and cast a carving which fails to benefit."

² And have spread them to sun, and to moon, And to all the host of the heavens, that they have loved, And that they have served, And that they have walked after, And that they have sought, And to which they have bowed themselves, They are not gathered, nor buried, They are for dung on the face of the ground."
