¹ And it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a man went from Bethlehem, Judah to sojourn in the land of Moab — he, his wife, and his two sons. ² And the man's name was Elimelech, and his wife's name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion — Ephrathites of Bethlehem, Judah. Have I yet sons in my womb to be your husbands? ¹² Turn now, my daughters, for I am too old to be married: for I said, Suppose I were married, and should bear sons; ¹³ would you wait for them till they should be grown? Or would you refrain from being married for their sakes? Not so, my daughters, for I am grieved for you, that the hand of the Lord has gone forth against me. ¹⁴ And they lifted up their voice, and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law and returned to her people; but Ruth followed her. ¹⁵ And Naomi said to Ruth, Behold, your sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; turn now also after your sister-in-law. ¹⁶ And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave you, or to return from following you; for wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. ¹⁷ And wherever you die, I will die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if I leave you, for death only shall divide between me and you. ¹⁸ And Naomi, seeing that she was determined to go with her, ceased to speak to her anymore. ¹⁹ Now they both went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they arrived at Bethlehem, that all the city was excited because of them, and they said, Is this Naomi? ²⁰ And she said to them, No, do not call me Naomi; call me 'Bitter,' for the Mighty One has dealt very bitterly with me. ²¹ I went out full, and the Lord has brought me back empty. And why do you call me Naomi, seeing the Lord has humbled me and the Mighty One has afflicted me? ²² So Naomi and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, returned from the country of Moab; and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

¹⁰ Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, because the famine prevailed in the land.

¹ When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, I am your God, be well-pleasing before Me, and be blameless.

²⁷ And he came close and kissed him, and smelled the smell of his garments, and blessed him, and said, Behold, the smell of my son is as the smell of an abundant field, which the Lord has blessed.

²⁰ And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If the Lord God will be with me, and guard me throughout on this journey, on which I am going, and give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on,

¹¹ And Jacob kissed Rachel, and cried with a loud voice and wept.

⁵⁵ And Laban rose up in the morning, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them; and Laban, having turned back, departed to his place.

³¹ And the people believed and rejoiced, because God visited the children of Israel, and because He saw their affliction. And the people bowed down and worshipped.

⁴ And the Lord said to Moses, Behold, I will rain bread upon you out of heaven; and the people shall go forth, and they shall gather their daily portion for the day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. ⁵ And it shall come to pass on the sixth day that they shall prepare whatsoever they have brought in, and it shall be double of what they shall have gathered for the day, daily. ⁶ And Moses and Aaron said to all the congregation of the children of Israel, At evening you shall know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt;

²⁷ And Moses dismissed his father-in-law, and he returned to his own land.

⁸ And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

⁸ And the man departed from Bethlehem the city of Judah to sojourn in whatever place he might find. And he came as far as Mount Ephraim, and to the house of Micah to accomplish his journey.

¹ And there was a Levite sojourning in the sides of Mount Ephraim, and he took to himself a concubine from Bethlehem Judah. ² And his concubine departed from him, and went away from him to the house of her father to Bethlehem Judah, and she was there four months.

⁵ And both Mahlon and Chilion died also; and the woman survived her husband and her two sons.

¹⁰ And they said to her, We will return with you to your people.

¹⁴ And they lifted up their voice, and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law and returned to her people; but Ruth followed her.

¹¹ And Boaz answered and said to her, It has fully been told to me how you have dealt with your mother-in-law after the death of your husband, and how you left your father and your mother, and the land of your birth, and came to a people whom you knew not before. ¹² The Lord recompense your work; may a full reward be given you of the Lord God of Israel, to whom you have come to trust under His wings.

²⁰ And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, Blessed is he of the Lord, because He has not failed in His mercy with the living and the dead. And Naomi said to her, This man is our relative, and is one of our relations.

²³ And Ruth joined herself to the young women of Boaz, to glean until they had finished the barley harvest and the wheat harvest.

¹ And she lodged with her mother-in-law. And Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?

¹ There was a man of Ramathaim Zophim, of Mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, a son of Jeroham, the son of Elias, the son of Tohu, in Nasib Ephraim.

⁷ The Lord makes poor, and makes rich; He brings low, and lifts up. ⁸ He lifts up the poor from the earth, and raises the needy from the dunghill; to seat him with the princes of the people, and causing them to inherit the throne of glory;

²¹ And the Lord visited Anna, and she bore yet three sons, and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the Lord.

¹⁷ And he said, What was the word that was spoken to you? I pray you do not hide it from me: may God do these things to you, and more also, if you hide from me anything of all the words that were spoken to you in your ears.

¹¹ So they sent and gathered the lords of the Philistines, and they said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it lodge in its place; and let it not slay us and our people.

¹ And one of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha, saying, Your servant my husband is dead; and you know that your servant feared the Lord; and the creditor has come to take my two sons to be his servants.

³¹ And he said, God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha shall stand upon him this day.

¹ And Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise and go, you and your household, and sojourn wherever you may sojourn; for the Lord has called for a famine upon the land; indeed it will come upon the land for seven years. ² And the woman arose, and did according to the word of Elisha, both she and her house; and they sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. ³ And it came to pass after the expiration of the seven years, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines to the city, and came to cry to the king for her house and for her land.

²¹ and said, I myself came forth naked from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return there; the Lord has given, and the Lord has taken away. As it seemed good to the Lord, so has it come to pass; blessed be the name of the Lord.

¹⁷ But blessed is the man whom the Lord has reproved; and reject not the chastening of the Almighty.

⁴ For the arrows of the Lord are in my body, whose violence drinks up my blood: whenever I am going to speak, they pierce me.

¹⁷ renewing against me my torture: and You have dealt with me in great anger, and You have brought trials upon me.

⁷ Will you find out the traces of the Lord? Or have you come to the end of that which the Almighty has made?

²⁶ For You have written evil things against me, and You have compassed me with the sins of my youth.

⁶ Know then that it is the Lord that has troubled me, and has raised His bulwark against me.

²¹ Pity me, pity me, O my friends; for it is the hand of the Lord that has touched me.

³ On behalf of the saints that are in His land, He has magnified all His pleasure in them.

⁴ For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; I became thoroughly miserable while a thorn was fastened in me. Pause.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but out of them all the Lord shall deliver them.

³ The words of his mouth are transgression and deceit; he is not inclined to understand how to do good.

² For Your weapons are fixed in me, and You have pressed Your hand heavily upon me.

⁹ I was dumb, and opened not my mouth; for You are He that made me. ¹⁰ Remove Your scourge from me; I have fainted by reason of the strength of Your hand.

¹⁰ Hear, O daughter, and see, and incline your ear; forget also your people, and your father's house.

¹⁴ For I was plagued all the day, and my reproof was every morning.

¹⁵ I am poor and in troubles from my youth; and having been exalted, I was brought low and into despair.

³⁰ If his children should forsake My law, and walk not in My judgments; ³¹ if they should profane My ordinances, and not keep My commandments; ³² I will visit their transgressions with a rod, and their sins with scourges.

¹⁴ He makes grass to grow for the cattle, and green herbs for the service of men, to bring bread out of the earth; ¹⁵ and wine makes glad the heart of man, to make his face cheerful with oil; and bread strengthens man's heart.

¹⁶ Moreover He called for a famine upon the land; He broke the whole support of bread.

³⁴ a fruitful land into saltness, for the wickedness of them that dwell in it.

⁵ He has given food to them that fear Him; He will remember His covenant forever.

⁶³ I am a companion of all them that fear You, and of them that keep Your commandments.

⁵ But them that turn aside to crooked ways the Lord will lead away with the workers of iniquity; but peace shall be upon Israel.

¹⁵ I will surely bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.

¹⁵ The eyes of all wait upon You; and You give them their food in due season.

⁷ who executes judgment for the wronged: who gives food to the hungry. The Lord looses the fettered ones.

¹⁴ He makes your borders peaceful, and fills you with the flour of wheat.

¹⁷ A friend loves at all times, and let brothers be useful in distress, for on this account are they born.

⁸ Remove vanity and falsehood far from me, and give me neither wealth nor poverty, but appoint to me what is needful and sufficient:

¹ And the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and they shall rest on their land; and the stranger shall be added to them; yes, they shall be added to the house of Jacob.

⁷ Was not this your pride from the beginning, before she was given up?

¹³ In that day I was given up as to a lion until the morning; so has He broken all my bones; for I was so given up from day even to night.

¹⁰ For thus said the Lord: When seventy years shall be on the verge of being accomplished at Babylon, I will visit you, and will confirm My words to you, to bring back your people to this place.

¹³ Son of man, if a land shall sin against Me by committing a trespass, then will I stretch out My hand upon it, and will break its staff of bread, and will send forth famine upon it, and cut off man and beast from it.
