¹³ He that stops his ears from hearing the poor, himself also shall cry, and there shall be none to hear him.

⁷ And if there shall be in the midst of you a poor man from among your brothers, in one of your cities in the land, which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, neither shall you by any means close up your hand from your brother who is in need. ⁸ You shall surely open your hands to him, and shall lend to him as much as he wants according to his need. ⁹ Take heed to yourself that there be not a secret thing in your heart — an iniquity, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is approaching. And your eye shall be evil to your brother that is in need, and you shall not give to him, and he shall cry against you to the Lord, and there shall be great sin in you. ¹⁰ You shall surely give to him, and you shall lend to him as much as he wants, according as he is in need. And you shall not grudge in your heart as you give to him, because on this account the Lord your God will bless you in all your works, and in all things on which you shall lay your hand. ¹¹ For the poor shall not fail off your land, therefore I charge you to do this thing, saying, You shall surely open your hands to your poor brother, and to him that is distressed upon your land.

¹ And the cry of the people and their wives was great against their brothers the Jews. ² And some said, We are numerous with our sons and our daughters; so we will take grain, and eat, and live. ³ And some said, As to our fields and vineyards and houses, let us pledge them, and we will take grain, and eat. ⁴ And some said, We have borrowed money for the king's tributes — our fields, and our vineyards, and houses are pledged. ⁵ And now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children are as their children. Yet behold, we are reducing our sons and our daughters to slavery, and some of our daughters are enslaved; and there is no power of our hands, for our fields and our vineyards belong to the nobles.

¹³ And I shook out my garment, and said, So may God shake out every man who shall not keep to this word, from his house, and from his labors, he shall be even thus shaken out, as an outcast and empty. And all the congregation said, Amen, and they praised the Lord; and the people did this thing.

⁴¹ They cried, but there was no deliverer: even to the Lord, but He hearkened not to them.

⁴ Their venom is like that of a serpent; as that of a deaf asp, and that stops her ears;

²⁸ For it shall be that when you call upon me, I will not listen to you: wicked men shall seek me, but shall not find me.

²⁷ He that gives to the poor shall not be in need, but he that turns away his eye from him shall be in great distress.

¹⁵ When you stretch forth your hands, I will turn away My eyes from you; and though you make many supplications, I will not hearken to you; for your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash, and be clean; remove your iniquities from your souls before My eyes; cease from your iniquities; ¹⁷ learn to do well; diligently seek judgment, deliver him that is suffering wrong, plead for the orphan, and obtain justice for the widow.

⁶ I have not chosen such a fast, says the Lord; but do you loose every burden of iniquity, do you untie the knots of hard bargains, set the bruised free, and cancel every unjust account? ⁷ Break your bread to the hungry, and lead the unsheltered poor to your house; if you see one naked, clothe him, and you shall not disregard the relations of your own seed. ⁸ Then shall your light break forth as the morning, and your health shall speedily spring forth; and your righteousness shall go before you, and the glory of God shall surround you. ⁹ Then shall you cry, and God shall hearken to you; while you are yet speaking He will say, Behold, I am here. If you remove from you the band, and the stretching forth of the hands, and murmuring speech;

¹⁶ But you turned and profaned My name, to bring back everyone his servant, and everyone his handmaid, whom you had set free and at their own disposal, to be to you male and female slaves. ¹⁷ Therefore thus said the Lord: You have not hearkened to Me, to proclaim a release everyone to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim a release to you, to the sword, and to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will give you up to dispersion among all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁹ Thus says the Lord Almighty; Judge righteous judgment, and deal mercifully and compassionately, everyone with his brother, ¹⁰ and oppress not the widow, or the fatherless, or the stranger, or the poor; and let not one of you remember in his heart the injury of his brother. ¹¹ But they refused to attend, and madly turned their back, and made their ears heavy, so that they should not hear. ¹² And they made their heart disobedient, so as not to hearken to My law, and the words which the Lord Almighty sent forth by His Spirit by the former prophets: so there was great wrath from the Lord Almighty. ¹³ Therefore it came to pass, that as He spoke and they did not listen, so they shall cry, and I will not listen, says the Lord Almighty.

¹⁴ "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

² For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with what measure you measure, it will be measured back to you.

³⁰ "But he was not willing, but going off, he cast him into prison till he should pay back what was owed. ³¹ So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and they came and narrated to their master all that had taken place. ³² Then summoning him, his master said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. ³³ Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, as I also had compassion on you?' ³⁴ "And being angered, his master handed him over to the tormentors until he should pay all that was owed to him. ³⁵ Thus also My heavenly Father will do to you, if you do not forgive each one his brother their trespasses, from your hearts."

⁴¹ "Then He will also say to those on the left, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels: ⁴² for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; ⁴³ I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.' ⁴⁴ "Then they also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and we did not minister to You?' ⁴⁵ "Then He will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, neither did you do it to Me.' ⁴⁶ "And these shall go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

²⁵ When once the Master of the house has risen up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open for us,' and answering He will say to you, 'I do not know you, where you are from.'

⁵⁷ Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one purpose;

¹³ For judgment is without mercy to the one who does not show mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. ¹⁴ What does it profit, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Is that kind of faith able to save him? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the necessary things of the body, what is the benefit?
